A new study out of the University of Copenhagen, as reported by CNN, found that five organically-grown foods contained no more nutrients than their
You are what you eat. In this case, it is somewhat true, as sperm contains important genetic material. But sperm is not particularly nutritious or fattening. The average ejaculate, about 1 teaspoon, contains between 200 and 300 million sperm. Total calories: about 5. These calories are derived from proteins (including enzymes) and sugars (mainly fructose) [...]

Barley is stated by historians to be the oldest of all cultivated grains. It seems to have been the principal bread plant among the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. The Jews especially held the grain in high esteem, and sacred history usually uses it interchangeably with wheat, when speaking of the fruits of the Earth.Among the early Greeks and Romans, barley was almost the only food of the co
Marine invertebrates account nearly 40% of the World Fishery Trade. More than 21 classes of marine invertebrates have been classified but only about 6,000 species of six classes still exist. These are widely distributed in all oceans of marine environments, ranging from the intertidal zone to the deepest oceanic trenches. Marine invertebrates are harvested and [...]
The only way I ever had turnips as a child was the root in soup, overcooked and tasteless. It is only in the last few years I have learnt to enjoy turnips and their leaves as a veggie side dish and serving the root raw in salads.Thousand of years ago turnips were very popular in the Middle East and Europe up until the discovery of potatoes when they became less popular. The turnip greens (leaves) became part of African-American cooking when they were slaves and have remained so up until today and have also become part of Southern cooking. It is a member of the Brassicaceae Family, it is related to broccoli and radishes.Turnips with their greens are an excellent source of dietary fiber, folate, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, tryptophan, plus vitamins A, B6, C,E, K.
You're in a bit of a dilemma standing in front of the produce section of your local supermarket. In one hand, you're holding a conventionally grown Granny Smith apple. In your other hand, you have one that's been organically grown. Both apples are firm, shiny and green. Both provide vitamins and fiber, and both are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol. The conventionally grown apple costs less and is a proven family favorite. But the organic apple has a label that says "USDA Organic." Does that mean it's better? Safer? More nutritious? Several differences between organic and nonorganic foods exist. Become a better informed consumer for your next trip to the supermarket.Conventional vs. organic farmingThe word "organic" refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as
We all know that Rice has been a staple diet in many parts of India. It contains mainly carbohydrates with almost negligible proteins, fats and minerals. 100 grams of Rice gives us 300-400 calories. In Ayurveda, Khichari (rice-lentil stew) has been recommended because the proteins in rice, when mixed with proteins in the grams/lentils can produce nutritious results. Many people in Western and Southern India cook rice in milk to make “Payasam” which is very nutritious, but it should be taken without sugar. Other milk products like curd, buttermilk, yoghurt etc when mixed with rice show good nutritional value.
Forms of Rice : From all varieties, the manually polished rice is the best for digestion. Try to get this organic rice from villages or directly from farmers. It may be dif
Remember one of key rules of a healthy food - eat not less than five vegetables and fruit in day? And what fruit the most nutritious? Researchers of university Baylor in Dallas, carefully having studied properties of 27 products, have come to conclusion, that the most useful fruit is kiwi. In a kiwifruit the average size 75 mg of vitamin C, contains about 46 calories, 0.3-gram fats, 1 gm proteins, 11 gm carbohydrates, 75 mg vitamins and 2.6 grams dietary fiber.Eating one kiwi on day, the person covers daily norm of vitamin C which is capable to strengthen immune system, blood vessels, and also raises resistibility of an organism in struggle against diseases. Besides this vitamin helps the person to avoid stresses. Last experiments of the Norwegian scientists have shown, that this product a

Early results of a 12 million pound, 4-year EU study on the benefits of organic food suggest that some of them, such as fruit, vegetables and milk, are more nutritious than non-organically produced food and may contain higher concentrations of cancer fighting and heart beneficial antioxidants. The results were released to the press but there is no mention of a of a journal publication as yet. The research team said its findings will be published in full within the next 12 months. The findings were announced by Professor Carlo Leifert of the Tesco Centre for Organic Agriculture based at Newcastle University, UK, who with his team are working on the EU funded project called the Quality Low Input Food (QLIF) project, the biggest ever to research the pros and cons of organic farming and food.Prof Leifert told the press that the research results suggested that eating organic food was equivalent to eating an extra portion of fruit and vegetables a day.The early results of the study show that o

Maintaining a healthy diet is the practice of making choices about what to eat with the intent of improving or maintaining good health. Usually this involves consuming necessary nutrients by eating the appropriate amounts from all of the food groups, including an adequate amount of water. Since human nutrition is complex a healthy diet may vary widely subject to an individual's genetic makeup, environment, and health. For around 20% of the planet's population, lack of food and malnutrition are the main impediments to healthy eating; people in developed countries are however more concerned about obesity.
When considering what to include in a weight loss diet, there are two factors that you should always consider early. The first is whether or not your chosen diet will be sufficiently nutritious to keep you healthy. The second is if the diet will be tasty enough to maintain your interest, rather than for you to opt out through boredom.
It is possible to address both of these concerns at the same time by considering health food vitamins, and in so doing you may be in for some pleasant surprises. Much will depend in your tastes in food, but with experimentation, you should be able to construct a diet, within the guidelines of your nutritionist and doctor, that is also interesting enough to enable you to not only stick to the diet but enjoy it also.
If you are able to end up with a diet that you can really enjoy, then there is a chance that it will become a lifelong habit. It is possible to make permanent changes; I know that from personal experience. Initially, it can be difficult to make

Six American moms will be going behind-the-scenes at McDonald’s restaurants, processing plants, orchards and test kitchens and sharing their experiences with the world via online journals.McDonald’s, of course, is banking on the fact that these moms, who were chosen from a pool of 4,000 applicants, will help give them a more family-friendly, “mom-approved” reputation amid growing claims that fast-food giants are contributing to obesity and a host of other diet-related health problems across the country. In a 2006 phone and online survey, about 48 percent of women said they viewed McDonald’s food quality as “excellent” or “very good.” I feel that now that more people are investigating McDonald's, they are now quickly putting nutrition facts on their foods. An article written by David Kiley puts forth information regarding this business tactic. The company is trying to move this closer to the industry average of 68 percent, but what is shocking to me is that even that m

This morning The Rooster finagled sitting on her father's lap to eat her breakfast.
"Uh... this diaper is suddenly feeling really WARM on my leg," K reported.
"Rooster, is there something in your diaper?" I asked.
Roo nodded vigorously, "YESH!"
"What's in there, Roo?"
"CORN!"Oh, dear.
Why even eat corn?

It is no secret that the food a person ingests can have positive or negative affects on their digestive system and gastrointestinal tract. However, just because a person with Crohn’s has to watch what they eat, and omit various food products from their diet, doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the foods they eat. The following are five foods that are generally considered safe for a Crohns recipes diet and can provide extra nutrition and/or flavour.1. Honey – Honey is a natural sweetener that has healing properties. by: ARA (ARA) - As the beginning of the school year nears, parents once again face the challenge of preparing healthy lunches and snacks that their kids will actually eat. After all, you can send your child to school with a well-balanced lunch a home-ec teacher would be proud of, but if he trades his carrot sticks for a cupcake, all your efforts go down the drain. What parents need are ways to make healthy food fun for kids to eat. And since September is not only back-to-school month, but also “5 a Day” month (in honor of the FDA recommendation that everyone eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day), what better time to incorporate these foods into your family’s diet. Every parent knows that some foods are more popular with kids than others. For example, most kids like bananas, but may not be so sure about papaya. While you want your child to try new tastes, their lunch box probably isn’t the place for that. Keeping kids’ taste buds in mind, here are some tips fr
Abstract from ArticleTempe is a fermented soy bean product originally made by Central Javanese people through fermentation with Rhizopus species. Although there is evidence of earlier fermentation of soy, tempe had appeared in the Central Javanese food pattern in the 1700s. Through its extensive use in main meals and snacks, it has led to people in the Jakarta prectinct having the highest known soy intake in the world and accordingly of the isoflavones contained. This provides an unique opportunity to consider the health effects of tempe (and soy), both beneficial and potentially toxic. Apparent health benefits are bowel health, protection against cardiovascular disease, certain cancers (e.g. breast and prostate) and menopausal health (including bone health). The long use of tempe at all stages of life, without recognised adverse effects, suggests it is relatively safe at the levels of intake seen in Central Java. However, further research on soy, both fermented and non-fermented, in C
