Nearly a fortnight ago, the famous Kenyan Vet and conservationist Zahoor Kashmiri passed away. He was a great man apart from being a qualified vet and a passionate conservationist. His efforts for the African wildlife will always be remembered. Throughout his career he worked tirelessly for the welfare of the endangered animals. It is unfortunate therefore that he was killed while working for one

I'd have noted Rich Juzwiak has a new mix up no matter what—his mixes are always newsworthy by Idolator's ears—but I'm humbled that he cites something I wrote as an impetus for his putting together the third collection of New Jack Swing classics and rarities. Whatever the reason, this is worth grabbing sooner rather than later. [Four Four]
Ace mocks it as an especially Morfordesque example of Morford’s oeuvre, which does indeed embrace so many conservative stereotypes of the San Francisco liberal as to make one wonder if he’s not doing it for attention, but is his logic here really that off base? Liberals might reasonably favor Obama for his policy positions but how else do you explain, say, Doug Kmiec’s incoherent affection f

Borrowers have seen an increase in the amounts of interest attached to personal loans, an industry expert has stated.Jo Roberts, director at Needanadviser, reported that in recent months the availability of cheap personal loans has diminished. The fall in cheap loans was attributed to the continuing impact of the credit crunch as money lenders begin to take steps to ensure that those who borrow money from them will be able to afford to make repayments. She said: "Lenders are running scared of the credit crunch. We have not seen such a large [rate] rise in secured loans because lenders are now looking to get their money back. But what is happening with unsecured loans is that people have overextended themselves with credit and the loans that will end up not being repaid if the person goes ba

On March 17, over forty million Irish Americans and others worldwide celebrate the 1,500 year old legacy of St Patrick with parades and modern-day ?traditions?, some of which perpetuate derogatory cultural stereotypes of the Irish. However, behind the crass frivolity of green beer and seasonal shamrocks lies a heartfelt message of goodwill and social justice, which is as compelling today as it was fifteen centuries ago. - 2004-03-01 Friend of PR Web - 1

~Snooper~This is something that needs to be spread far and wide. As I was reading the zillion of blogs Snooper visits, I found this one at Riehl World View.TNR: There Goes That Rationalization Unless I missed it, TNR seems to have gone dark on the Beauchamp affair, again. In any event, I watched Band of Bloggers on the History Channel tonight - they have a website hereThe History Channel wants to capture what it's really like to be a soldier. We're launching a new website showcasing first person experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan and all other American wars.and then I remembered reading this once at TNR.Over the course of the war, we have tried to provide our readers with a sense of Iraq as it is seen by the troops. Usually, these stories have been written by journalists who have traveled to Iraq and interviewed soldiers there, but last January Beauchamp sent us a first-person vignette that seemed a powerful contribution to the genre. There are any number of milblogs at milbl

MANILA, Philippines--The number of Filipino nurses seeking work in the United States from January to September 2007 has dramatically increased by almost 50 percent, according to the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP).
Alex Aguilar, TUCP spokesperson, said that 15,083 Philippine-educated nurses took the
The other night at work, some of the other nurses were talking about one of the docs, Dr. Meanie. Dr. Meanie is only nice to young, cute nurses. Fortunately, he is also a bit of a mumbler, so it's quite difficult to tell when he's actually being mean. But I had a bit of a moment as the other nurses were talking. I realized something about myself. I'm no longer young and cute. I'll be 43 next month and I'm about 20 pounds heavier than I would like to be. I'm not saying that I'm hideous -- nor am I saying that I was ever beautiful. But I was cute. I got the whistles. Now I only attract the occasional, distracted geezer smile. I swear that yesterday I was only 29.So, last night, I had a couple of beverages and went on to a well known online encyclopedia and started adding myself to various articles. I am now on the list of famous alumni from my high school: Working Girl (I used my real name), noted registered nurse. I'm sure I'll get busted soon and banned from the W

Overall, the sale of investment properties and vacation homes is down across the nation. But as Entrepreneur Magazine points out, that gives real estate investors more choices.Of note, Portland is mentioned in an article about this subject matter. One advisor urges buyers to be patient, observant and prepared in real estate markets with job and population growth. “Hotbed areas today… include Albuquerque, New Mexico; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Portland, Oregon, all of which boast robust rental communities as well.”Here’s the story.
A writer for the Wall Street Journal recently wrote an article that’s kinda, sorta about the energy debate and fuel efficiency. At the center of the article was Portland. Here are some excerpts:“Portland is a green place, surrounded by temperate, Douglas fir rainforests and dotted with lush gardens. Portland is also Green in the political sense, at least, more so than Detroit. Years ago, Portland's political leaders blocked construction of a freeway through the heart of downtown, and took other measures designed to limit suburban sprawl and put the automobile in its place as a servant rather than a master. In 1993, Portland was the first American city to craft a global-warming action plan, Mayor Tom Potter recently told a congressional committee. Mayor Potter said that per capita greenhouse gas emissions have dropped, and that since 1990, Portland's local greenhouse gas emissions are down 1%...…Portland's efforts to limit sprawl have helped to sustain the value of properties i

Judd Hollander of The Epoch Times thinks Salvage is too much like a soap opera and it left him feeling 'jumbled'. But he does have a few good words to say:O'Byrne is quite good as Herzen, as is Ethan Hawke as Michael Bakunin ... Richard Eastman and Jennifer Ehle, both of whom played other roles in the earlier episodes of the trilogy, are also enjoyable here.Eastman? This is followed by what is potentially the understatement of the century:Direction by Jack O'Brien is okay.Meanwhile:Ethan Hawke's new role is leading him to think about cows. He is also preparing to put pen to paper once more.At Chowhound, aimeezing marathoned March 10, felt pleasantly 'immersed' and is consequently another advocate of the back-to-back approach. Someone noted to me yesterday how it must be weird for me right now... The excitement of a new baby, but the caution of a major surgery. I said, "well, the excitement is completely secondary... my main focus is getting back HOME". I realized, after I said it, that that sounds awful. But I've never been the type of person who can visualize the baby, get all gushy and gooey about the baby, (NAME THE BABY) before the baby gets here. I don't write it long, emotionally dripping letters while inutero. I don't know why. I suspect it's the whole optimism/pessimism thing I have going, and have always had going. Who knows. For posterity's sake, however, I will say that I cannot wait to get this baby HOME WITH ME. I have the rest of his/her life to be excited about him/her, starting the moment he/she is born and I get to see that face. Hear that cry. Experience those hormonal changes that cement him/her to me *for life*. And they happen immediately with me. So, for the next 2-1/2 days
