Search engine marketing experienced a colossal increase in spending during the past year with more than $9.4 billion being spent in the U.S. alone. It's an impressive increase in spending when compared to the $5.75 billion spent on search engine marketing in 2005.
The data was made public this week by the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO). Pay-per-click search marketing accounts for 86% of all spending on search marketing, while SEO represents 12%.
SEMPO is predicting that search engine marketing spending will reach $18.6 billion by 2011 in the United States alone. There's a lot of opportunity out there.
