However, a glance at [...]

An underrated technique for controlling public speaking nerves!
Controlling panic attacksIn a recent interview, Madonna revealed that she still gets panic attacks on stage. Now, you might be thinking that if even a performer with her experience still panics after a quarter of a century of superstardom, then what hope is there for me?But then we are not performing as part of a multi-million pound tour where we are expected to remember and deliver outstanding songs and dance routines while knowing that every second we are up there, the world's critics are scrutinising us for any sign of weakness as we grow older.Madonna has her own techniques for dealing with her panic. I am now going to enlarge on one of the suggestions on my Thomas's Twelve Tips for Terrified Speakers web page which can help you if you get really nervous at a speaking engagement. I was

      Cranial Nerves
Easter has taken a rather rostral turn from the spine to the twelve cranial nerves. It would seem this is a part of medicine where a mnemonic will come in useful. So far I’ve heard two good ones.(Olfactory, Optic, Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Vestibulocochlear, Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory, Hypoglossal)Only One Object Transcends Time And Foams Vivaciously: Glorious Vagina! All Hail!Ohh, Ohh, Oh, To Touch And Feel Virgin Girls' Vaginas And HymensIt always seems much easier to remember with the added charm of smut. Well, I suppose it beats the more conservative mnemonic:On Old Olympus Towering Tops A Finn And German Vending At HopsDoes anyone even understand what this means??!Once I’ve finally managed to remember the names and spellings of the nerves let alo

A SHOCKING IDEA : NERVES MIGHT RUN ON SOUND, NOT ELECTRICALY
Most people know that nerves work by passing electrical currents from cell to cell. But you might be surprised to learn that no one knows exactly how anesthetics stop nerves from carrying pain signals. That's why two scientists believe that we really don’t know how nerves work after all.According to their controversial theory, electricity is just a side effect of how nerves really operate: by conducting high-density waves of pressure that resemble sound reverberating through a pipe."Nerves are supposed to work like a series of electrical transistors," said Andrew Jackson, a physicist at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. "This picture is at best flawed."If correct, Jackson and Thomas Heimburg, a Niels Bohr biophysicist and co-author of a recent paper describing their theory, would turn a long-held (and Nobel Prize-winning) theory on its head.Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1963 for describing the electric transmission of i

Numerous Apartment Rent Increases Are Really Getting On My Nerves
I’m sure many of us are familiar with rent increases and I understand that this is necessary because the maintenance, cost of land go up through time. However, I got a letter a letter that has similar language as the following 3 times in the last 13 months. … As a result, this letter constitutes written notice the rent due for Apartment 15 will increase from $995.00 to $1,045.00 per month effective October 1, 2007… My 12 month lease expired May of 2006 and that’s when the “fun” started. Around July or so, I received the first letter for a rent increase, then again in November and now one more time this month. Month Rent Price Increase May 2006 $905 - August 2006 $945 $40 Feb 2007 $995 $50 August 2007 $1045 $50 I would appreciate it if they just tell me once a year that the rent is increasing but it really bugs me when they keep doing this. Although I’m not happy about the monthly rent I need to pay, I’m frustrated because it is annoying and not because I

when it get on to ur nerves!
This article of mine highlights certain times in life when you want a certain thing but do not get it easily. Some of mine relate to:1. When you arrive in railway station way ahead of schedule, you will find the train will arrive late by a few hours.2. When you arrive just a few minutes late, you find the train has already left.3. When you arrive on time and also find the train on time and feel most lucky, the train would invariably be held up in between for long time ading to your frustration.4.When you arrive on time and also the train is ontime, only problem you wont get space to squeeze into the compartment!5. It rains heavily and you take the umbrella, you will find that within a few minutes, the sun shines with out a trace of rain!6. OK, it shines and you dont take the umbrella, you will find there is a heavy downpour just as you put on your best clothes.7.When you read a film review, the critics say it is bad but you feel it should be good and take a risk of going to the theater

I’m starting to get on my own nerves, now
I’m feeling extra bitchy lately. All I can think of blogging about is how badly every person I come across offline is determined to snap my last nerve. Like - is it just me, or should you maneuver around store aisles the way you do when driving your vehicle on the road? I mean, if you were out driving and were making a left turn onto a main road from a little alleyway, would you actually whip out without looking first and hold out your hand to stop the oncoming traffic? You shouldn’t do that in a store, either, coming out from between two display cases without pausing to see whether anyone was there and putting your hand on my cart to stop me. How ’bout I just put my hand on your little wheeliemobile thing and push you back in between those two display cases since I’ve got the right of way, mmkay? And another thing: From here on out, any pedestrians who know that a vehicle is moving and still refuse to move their asses out of the way deserve to be run over. I&

poem | "Nerves" by Charles Bukowski
Sometimes a rant can lead from a quote to a poem. I don't like it when people have a line attached to their name and then it's quoted and quoted and quoted. I wonder how Gandhi would feel about "being the change..." or MLK, Jr. about having "a dream." Perhaps thankful for being remembered or glad that important ideas have lived on, but I think I'd simply be annoyed, or at least annoyed if people didn't take the time to read or listen to the "I have a dream" speech, annoyed if a line was used to tie me up in a box too small. Charles Bukowski's poem "Nerves" sometimes gets quoted because it has the lines: the most memorable concern of mankind / is the guts it takes to / face the sunlight again. A nice sentiment, but not really Bukowski without: I turn my ass to the wall. / I hate the mornings more than / any man. Anyway, somehow I got frustrated enough by this quoting of Bukowski, that I thought I'd track down the poem. I couldn't find it online but knew it came from his bo

Blogger Servers Play With My Nerves...
Warning - this is a rant inspired by my recent unpleasant experience with Blogger!Yesterday I bumped onto the Google's error page a couple times while I was surfing my favorite Blogger blogs. It was nothing special, just a few minutes timeout, no reason for me to get upset and write a post about it. I'm writing this post because I encountered the same error again this morning, only it didn't last a couple of minutes - it lasted over 40 minutes!!You might ask me why I'm so stressed about this, you've seen much longer server outages. Well, I'm stressed because Blogger usually schedules and announces server outages and they never last longer than 10 minutes, at least not since I started blogging! You might ask me why I'm upset about losing (just) 40 minutes? It may not mean a lot to you, but during those 40 minutes I lost a number of new readers, I lost potentially valuable income from my revenue programs and what's worst - my blog didn't exist for full 40 minutes, and I don't wa

      Good marriages calm nerves
A University of Virginia neuroscientist has found that women under stress who hold their husbands' hands show signs of immediate relief, which can clearly be seen on their brain scans. "This is the first study of the neurological reactions to human touch in a threatening situation, and the first study to measure how the brain facilitates the health-enhancing properties of close social relationships," says Dr. James A. Coan, author of the study, which is published in the December 2006 issue of the journal Psychological Science. Coan, an assistant professor in the U.Va. Neuroscience Graduate Program and the Department of Psychology, conducted a study involving several couples who rated themselves as highly satisfied with their marriages. Coan and colleagues designed a functional MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) study in which 16 married women were subjected to the threat of a very mild electric shock while they by turns held their husband's hand, the hand of a stranger (male) or no han

      Bad with the nerves
To ensure I retain the usage of both wrists in later life, my mouse at work is adorned with what some of my work colleagues call "fake testicles". What it's actually called is a mouse bean and it only costs £7. I've been told before that using a mousepad causes your wrist to overreach and puts strain on your hand. Instead, the mouse bean goes wherever my hand goes. It might be helpful to Sinéad who's a sufferer of RSI. Today, I raided a since-departed colleague's desk for an ergonomic keyboard. It's downright weird to use and I'm having difficulty reconciling the fact that the keyboard is split in half and that my words will now break in two. tags:mouse bean

      Black tea calms nerves
A UK research team has found that black tea helps to calm and reduce stress. In the placebo controlled study, tea drinkers had lower levels of stress and felt more relaxed following a stress challenge. “Drinking tea has traditionally been associated with stress relief, and many people believe that drinking tea helps them relax after facing the stresses of everyday life,” said Dr. Steptoe. “However, scientific evidence for the relaxing properties of tea is quite limited.” They recruited 75 healthy non-smoking men who agreed to be withdrawn from tea, coffee, and other caffeinated beverages during a four-week washout period. During that time, the participants were given a fruit-flavored caffeinated placebo tea. The volunteers also refrained from using Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or taking dietary or caffeine supplements, and restricted their diet to avoid fruits rich in antioxidant flavonoids that could have skewed or masked the association of tea with

Where did all these nerves come from?
It's official, my mother-in-law is coming. I don't know exactly when - but it looks like it will be the first part of March. She'll be here for a few months. I'm nervous. I don't really know what she's expecting to find here. Ali and I have been married for 7 years and I've never really thought about what she would have wanted to find in her only sons wife. Every mother has expectations of the woman that marries her son. What could she be expecting?I know that our cultures are at odds - her being from a predominantly Muslim country where women don't typically work, men bring home the money and tell the women how to spend it. I don't think she would have pictured a 'career' woman as the right wife for her son.Ali tells me stories of how she and his sisters practically waited on him hand and foot - the spoiled brat actually asked them to bring him coffee and change the channel of the TV for him. When we got married we discussed the expectations we had for each other - he's k
