OPEC Redux: Responding to the Russian–Iranian Gas Cartel

Movable Type 4.2 Released – UThink Still Behind
On the 13th, SixApart released the newest version of MovableType (this blogging platform), version 4.2. UThink, this blog provider, is still using the (very) old 3.33 version. It’s unfortunate because UThink is such a great blogging provider considering its awesome Google ranking and SEO. That’s why I didn’t just create a "DivideByZero-Blog.com,"? and instead used UThink.

I don’t want another family. I don’t want any family. Families suck!

Update: 1031 Tax Group Victim Provides 82 Page Document on US Bank Settlement With Southwest 1031 Victims–”Details of the Whole Sordid Mess Are Available”
In what can only be described as heartbreaking and compelling, one of the 350 victims of the 1031 Tax Group scandal has provided new information about a eerily similar situation: Donald McGhan’s Southwest Exchange rip off. According to Elizabeth Callanan one of the 350 victims in the ongoing 1031 Tax Group saga: “US Bank has recently settled a class action law suit filed by the Southwest 1031 Exchangers (whose funds were stolen by owner McGhan in a fashion so like Okun’s plundering of our funds, it is eerie) with a $25 million payment (only part of the $95 million McGhan took).” This is one of two comments that Ms Callanan announced in order to make people aware of the scandal, pitfalls, and ongoing suffering that has characterized victims in both cases. It is also information that should be considered by consumers when investigating and performing their due diligence on the 1031 Exchange process. Included in Elizabeth’s comment is an 82 page documen

In response to a recent claim that JPS Capital sent a offer sheet for $148 million to Ed Okun and the US Trustee in charge of managing the settlement for creditors in the 1031 Tax Group case, Trustee Jerry McHale flatly denied such an offer with accompanying documentation was made to him. The Linn County Historical Museum was established in Brownsville Oregon in 1962 by the Linn County Historical Society in cooperation with the City of Brownsville. Many county residents contributed time, talent, funds and artifacts to stock the new museum.  Over the years the collection grew and expanded into an adjacent building to the east.  Many visitors were charmed by the "grandmother's attic" feeling of the museum, with its scenes of domestic life and commerce, cases, shelves, nooks and crannies overflowing with a jumble of historical items. The new facility in the old relocated Brownsville Depot and railroad cars was dedicated on June 16, 1984. There is a mini-theatre, which occupies one of the box cars, and includes 30 seats from the old Linn Theatre in Brownsville.  Historical and vintage video programs are shown by request. To enjoy the essence of early Linn County life, and view the replicas of a general store, bank, barber shop and milliners s

When you think of the American Dream, what goes through your mind? The American Dream for me, may be different than for you, but it is still something we all relate to in our own unique and special way. Having grown up in a musical family for the better part of my years, music has played a more than significant role in my life. While I was considering what to submit in this post, The “American Dream” is what kept going through my mind. It is such a common and widely used term. What does it really mean? One day a few weeks ago while I was in the kitchen, little Kerry had climbed up on the piano and gotten down the glass from a hurricane lamp. He went running through the living room, tripped over the dog, dropped the glass and broke it; cutting his hands. We thought he had learned his lesson when he said he would never do that again. Discovering The Truth Behind Realtor Marketing – The Fabulous versus The Prolific
I have been a mortgage lender for 20 years and have learned a healthy skepticism about the personal marketing of Realtors.  In my capacity, I have the back stage pass to view the behind-the-scenes performance and have created categories for Realtors.  (Stick with me on this because an important question follows). The Fabulous Few:  this elite group excels at both personal marketing and professional execution of the job.The Quiet Performers:  this group doesn't excel at marketing but put their hearts and souls in the professional care of their clients.  The Prolific Pushers: This group is the whole point of my blog.  They are prolific marketers but completely fall on their swords when it comes to the professional care of their clients. The "D for Degree" group.  I learned this phrase during a group project in college when one member felt no need to carry his share of the assignment because all he needed was a "D for Degree".

If thinking is everything, then meditation is [...]

One pill for obesity and smoking– Rimonabant diet pill   Obesity is a major killer Use rimonabant Scientists are developing a pill that helps people quit smoking and slim down at the same time. The drug, rimonabant, works by blocking the circuits in the brain that control the urge to eat and smoke. Obesity and smoking have become two of the world’s biggest killers, and are being targeted for action in the UK. The makers, French firm Sanofi-Synthelabo, hope to market rimonabant diet pill  drug next year.   We think this might be the ideal compound for people who are overweight and smoke.    Dr Robert Anthenelli In one trial the drug helped people to shed an average of 9kg (20lbs) in a year. And in a second, it was found to double the chances of smokers successfully quitting - at least in the short term. Dr Robert Anthenelli, of the University of Cincinnati, who directed the smoking study, said: “We think this might be th

      Hutongs–Beijing’s New Attraction (old-culture,new attraction)
A new pastime — roaming through Beijing’s old, narrow streets, hutongs, by old-fashioned pedicab to visit siheyuan, the old quadrangles, and learn about the daily life of ordinary Beijing citizens– has attracted more and more overseas visitors.Existed as early as hundreds of years ago, narrow lanes, or hutongs were common in ancient Beijing. In the past, several thousand lanes, alleys and quadrangles formed residential areas for ordinary people living in the capital. Today,as the city develops into an international metropolis, its lanes and alleyways, occupying one third of the city proper, still serve as dwellings for half the total urban population. If sightseeing at the Imperial Palace, Ming Tombs and the Summer Palace is helpful in learning about the lives of China’s emperors, the hutongs of Beijing reflect in turn the history of Beijing as a whole. A day tour through hutongs gives you fresh insight into Beijing’s local life. * Start from the north en

      Beijing hutong–overview
A hutong is an ancient city alley or lane typical in Beijing, where hutongs run into the several thousand. Surrounding the Forbidden City, many were built during the Yuan (1206-1341), Ming(1368-1628) and Qing(1644-1908) dynasties. In the prime of these dynasties the emperors, in order to establish supreme power for themselves, planned the city and arranged the residential areas according to the etiquette systems of the Zhou Dynasty. The center of the city of Beijing was the royal palace — the Forbidden City. One kind of hutongs, usually referred to as the regular hutong, was near the palace to the east and west and arranged in orderly fashion along the streets. Most of the residents of these hutongs were imperial kinsmen and aristocrats. Another kind, the simple and crude hutong, was mostly located far to the north and south of the palace. The residents were merchants and other ordinary people. The main buildings in the hutong were almost all quadrangles–a building complex

      True Light–Review
I just finished reading True Light by Terri Blackstock, the last book I signed up for before bowing out from the Christian Fiction Review Blog. I found it fairly well written, although in a couple places I got the impression Blackstock could have used a wee bit more time than she had for rewrites. The story is basically a look into the heart of human nature in an end of civilization as we know it scenario. A supernova is emitting electromagnetic pulses that destroy all electronics and turn out the lights, with trickle down effects that basically leave folks without virtually everything we’ve come to depend on and leave folks to rediscover real horse power, solar power, bicycles, and manual typewriters. She’s definitely done a thorough job of world building, and has created sympathetic heroes and nasty villains, with the central characters well fleshed out. I never had any doubt as to the wrongly accused Mark’s innocence, but she did an excellent job of keeping the rea

I do know for a fact that I did work hard to get where I'm at in the real estate business.  It's wasn't easy at first.  I had to learn the hard way about the real estate business and the real estate market.  Once I learn!  I do understand what I need to do in order to be successful in the real estate business and the real estate market.  I have been wondering!   How?  I can prove myself to you that I do know what I'm doing. I only know the best way to sell myself to you is being honest with you.  I do hope "honest" is the only way to get hire by you.  I would rather tell the truth.  How many times have you been mislead by someone who said, that they will do everything for

      Where Are They Now?—–Mike Caruso
Playing in the independent leagues is often a sign that a baseball career is coming to an end. Mike Caruso hopes his time in the South Coast League is just the beginning. After more than two years away from the game the former White Sox shortstop is attempting to make a comeback with the South Georgia Peanuts. Caruso was the Giants second round pick in 1996, and he came to Chicago the next year the as part of the infamous “White Flag Trade,” when despite being only 3 1/2 games out of first place the White Sox shipped Roberto Hernandez, Danny Darwin, and Wilson Alvarez to the Giants in a deal that netted them Caruso, Bobby Howry, and Keith Foulke. In 1998 a 20 year-0ld Caruso won the job as the White Sox starting shortstop despite having little baseball experience above single A. Caruso went on to hit .306 and finish 3rd in the A.L. Rookie of the Year voting, but the the next season his average dipped to .250 and his defensive problems became more apparent. A 12 game st

Where Are They Now?—–Darius Washington Jr.
Darius Washington Jr. arrived at Memphis as one of the most highly touted freshman in the country. His freshman year he memorably broke down on the court after missing a free throw that would have sent the Tigers to the NCAA tournament, but he came back and had a solid sophomore year. Washington declared for the NBA draft after just two seasons at Memphis, but he was labeled as tweener who was too small to play shooting guard and too inexperienced to play point guard. He went undrafted and ended spending last season playing overseas. This week Stephen Dowell of the Orlando Sentinel caught up with Washington. His goal is still to play in the NBA and he hopes playing a season at point guard and leading his team to a Czech League title will earn him another chance. Washington’s father says that a number of NBA teams are interested in his son, and to showcase his skills he will likely play in one of the NBA’s summer leagues. When Washington missed that free throw his f

HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR PROPHETIC GIFT–PROPHETIC QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Hey guys and girls!!  The following article is from the Elijah list, I read it this morning and it really confirmed a few things for me.  Hope it blesses some of you as well.  Expect another post (written by me) within the next couple of days…God Bless!! “HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR PROPHETIC GIFT–PROPHETIC QUESTIONS ANSWERED” I hear that God is more interested in character than gifting. I don’t know if I’ll ever have enough character to be qualified to prophesy. When people make this statement, “God values character over gifting,” it’s like saying He values one quality that HE has given as a gift over another gift which HE also gave.   There is no Scripture that states this. It’s one of those “sayings,” but it’s not supported in the Bible. God values BOTH character and gifting–since both come from and through HIM. He will be growing both character AND your gifting throughout the rest of your life.

Mortgage Closing Costs –mortgage Settlement Costs Differ From State To State
An annual survey of mortgage closing costs in the fifty states brings up some substantial differences in its 2006 edition. The survey is partial to some extent, because it does not reflect taxes, other government costs or escrow fees. Nevertheless, it can provide an accurate sense of the variation that you will find from state to state on charges that are involved with every home loan settlement. All of the following statistics were based on a fixed rate mortgage of $200,000 for people with good credit ratings who made a twenty percent down payment.  These statistics were collected from nine lenders in each state, in the largest city of each state with one exception. Buffalo was substituted for New York City, because the Big Apple is in a league of its own. Nevertheless, New York finished first (or last, depending on your point of view) with its high title and settlement costs. The other states in the top five for mortgage closing costs were Texas, Hawaii, Ohio and Florida.  The nati

Personal loans – A comparative study
For personal needs, personal loan are most suitable. Available in both secured and unsecured form, this loan category provides suitable credit solutions for both short-term and long-term needs. Besides, its flexible nature, adds-up to its popularity. The secured type of personal loans can only be availed by homeowners and property owners. Availed by pledging collateral, the advantages of this sub-type are quick attention, high credit range (as high as £250,000), low interest rates (as low as 6.7%), diverse payback rates and methods, and negotiable loan terms and conditions. The unsecured type of personal loans can be availed by all – tenants, homeowners, property owners and students as well. Christian Science Fiction and Fantasy Tour–May
This month, the CSFF Blog is touring the online version of the magazine, The Sword Review. I haven’t been able to plumb this as deeply as I’d like, so I can’t vouch for the contents, but at the price of free, it’s probably worth taking a look at if you’re a fan. For poets especially, it’s worth taking a look, as this appears to be a paying market, and there aren’t many of those for any kind of poetry, let alone speculative. As to the contents, as I said, I haven’t verified this, but the standards laid out in their writer’s guidelines are very promising. The gist: They frown upon the use of profanity, and if plot requires depicting sexual or violent actions, they prefer it be briefly summarized over rather than shown in graphic description. This also sounds good: “If the content and message of your story is compatible with traditional values and Christian principles, we will be happy to consider it.” I have to admit,  th

      More Diplopia–CSFF Tour Day Three
I finished reading Double Vision yesterday (see my earlier review), and author Randall Ingermanson continued to wow and raise the bar on craftsmanship in it’s genre, although my reading materials of late have shown I take honesty about as seriously as Dillon, who I found it easy to identify with, except for politics, and especially on bathing suits. I think some ladies will be surprised by Dillon’s reaction as he would have been dismayed to learn today’s young women have been trained by culture to intentionally flaunt their assets and literally dress to kill. On the science, if you can make it through the initial explanations early on, the sailing will get much smoother later on. He’s got this aspect about as air tight as one could expect, given God’s sovereign omnipotence (translation: there is nothing He can’t do with the caveat that He also won’t contradict His own character and will) makes the theory the universe splits in two every time we

Arizona Outlaws Warrantless Car Searches– Kinda
By a 3-2 vote, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that Fourth Amendment rights prevent police from searching cars without a warrant-- even after the driver has been arrested. The Tuscon Citizen quotes Vice Chief Justice Rebecca White Berch's majority opinion: "In this technological age, when warrants can be obtained within minutes, it is not unreasonable to require that police officers obtain search warrants when they have probable cause to do so to protect a citizen's right to be free from unreasonable governmental searches." Prior to the search in question, defendant Rodney Gant had been arrested for driving with a suspended license. Police found cocaine and drug paraphernalia in Gant's car. The Arizona Attorney General's Office's chief criminal appeals lawyer was not a happy camper: "If you arrest the driver, it's not clear when police can search the car and when they can't. Now there is no bright line." It seems this issue is headed back to

Beijing Anti-Smog Restrictions a Success– Before they Begin!
Today's the day. From Friday until Tuesday, the Chinese government has implemented a license plate-based ban on a third of Beijing's 3m drivers. Officials hope to remove over a million vehicles from the city as part of an "experiment" to see if they can clear Beijing's fetid air ahead of the '08 Olympics (without causing public unrest). As you might imagine, carbon negative governments around the world are monitoring the situation carefully, looking for justification for similar restrictions in their own backyards. Without casting aspersions of Iran's press freedoms, it's interesting that Press TV is so keen on the China's anti-car syndrome that they're not waiting to see if reality matches their expectations. "Beijing is noticeably less congested following the four-day scheme that yanked 1.3 million private cars off the streets on Friday." If you thought that was a particularly non-scientific (if perhaps prescient) summation, how about

FL Says Cheerio to PIP (Personal Injury Policies)– For A Few Days
According to Jacksonville.com, the legislation requiring that Florida drivers carry no-fault personal injury policies (PIP) expires next Monday. Insurers welcome the end of the (PIP) system, which is rife with fraud. Problem: the Florida legislature may attempt to pass a measure that will renew the requirement. If so, insurance companies will need time to re-program their computers, figure out new rates and apply for their approval. Fort Lauderdale Rep Ellyn Bogdanoff sums up the mess: "The companies simply do not have the capacity to turn around in 24 hours." In the meantime, Sam Miller of the Florida Insurance Council has a message for drivers with current PIP policies: "Your contract with the insurance company is not voided by PIP going away." Yes but… Florida drivers who renew or take out a new policy after October first may find that a wreck may leads to a court fight over fault.
