People who play video games and people who produce electronic music have a lot in common. Both spend ridiculous amounts of time in front of their computers, both fiddle endlessly with customisations and upgrades, and both have an unfortunate appetite for coffee, energy drinks and illicit substances... largely so they can stay awake all night and make their eyes bleed. The only real difference betwe

A lot of people don’t remember The Nolan Sisters- the Irish siblings that were a pop phenomenon in the 70’s- anymore. But with their appearance on a new reality show called Pop Goes the Band a comeback seems to be in the cards. The show is all about getting the participants (which are various bands) to look like how they did when they were at the peak of their careers. A team of plastic sur

Once upon a time in the music industry, unknown musicians struggled to get that one big, influential gig. They worked hard, networked, and hunted for their big break. A lot of amazing musicians never achieved widespread success because they weren’t fortunate enough to know anyone in the recording industry. The bands that did make it [...]

There are a number of websites and programs that allow musicians to “collaborate live” with each other available online now. Although the software/sites listed in this post are cutting edge and in some cases, a little rough or BETA versions, this genre of collaborative music/musician sites is steadily increasing and becoming easier to use and implement.
In most cases, I have not had a great deal of experiences with the sites listed here, but can see the benefit that they all offer. If you are an active user of any of these sites or other related sites/software please share with us your experiences with them and/or how you are using them them in the comment section below!

Today, the German/Brazilian connection, with expert commentary...Compost Records Glucklich series of compilations is a pretty neat one. They combine old-school Brazilian goodness with newer, electronic Brazilian-flavored goodness. The Germans love them some Brazilian music. And actually, I once had a chance to ask Rainer Truby, who put this compilation together, about that. We were driving toward LAX and I asked, "So, why is it that there are so many German acts doing the Brazilian music?"... expecting, what with him being one of those people, that he would have some insight into the question. His answer: "Uh, yeah, I guess they do. I don't know, man."... wow. Thanks for that nugget, bro. Go take another hit off the bong while you're at it. Which just goes to show you musicians a

I knew it would happen. As soon as I heard about the mall shooting in Omaha, Nebraska, I knew the giant finger of blame would be pointed at emo music. The only thing is, I figured they’d start pointing it at bands like My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy because they are technically mainstream names. I thought they’d make it easy to put a face to the name, not pick someone the general public might have to google. I definitely never thought the blame would be placed on one, Conor Oberst, lead singer of Bright Eyes, but Radar magazine is pointing their finger at droopy-eyed Oberst, who also happens to be from Omaha and has dubbed him the Monster of the Week! It’s no secret that the record industry is in trouble. They have moved from selling music as their main source of income to creating revenue through lawsuits against their customers. Here are a few concepts every musician today should understand in order to thrive in the new music economy.

Jazz musicians have a long history in our culture and now is a great time to have a look at a few of the early jazz musicians that have played such an important role in our music.RED or Henry James Allen Jr.It is agreed that Red Allen is truly a jazz immortal with a music career that spanned more than 6 decades. He set the standards for many musical events such as big band trumpet soloists during the 1950s. He was a very creative musician with his own individual style that developed and matured throughout his career. An only child with a father that was also a musician with his own marching band. By age 8 Red had already made a career choice joining his dad’s band and by 15 he was playing with the New Orleans Stompers. In 1929 Red took a contract with Victor who was looking for an act to counter Louis Armstrong on Okeh records. In early 1933 he joined the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. In 1934 he joined the Irving Mills’ Blue Rhythm Band and in 1937 he took a 3 year contract with Lui

Greg Sarchet (Bass Club Chicago, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Northeastern Illinois University) for several years has handed the following list of recommended texts out to his incoming double bass students. These books touch on all sorts of issues relating to musicians and serve as a course for developing an aesthetic sense, which is something that is fiendishly difficulty to tech but absolutely essential for creating a satisfying artistic product. Teaching technique, theory, history, ear training, and all of the other fragments that make up a musician's skill set are one thing, but the glue that binds it all together is the overall aesthetic sensibility of the musician, and this list of books helps to guide the musician down this foggy but crucial path.I have read many of the books on this list, and one of my projects for this year is to read even more of them. I think that giving students a list like this is a fantastic idea, and I'd like to thank Greg for allowing me to share this w

It is hard to believe that the modern music industry does much to bring better music to the world. Recent offenses to quality music such as boy bands, divas, and overproduced pop shlock have all but convinced me. Apparently, I’m not the only one. Witness the rise of independent music, music produced largely outside the system without much help from the traditional music industry, especially in the early stages. Clearly, the music consuming public isn’t being served by the glossy output of the major labels and they are looking elsewhere for original, artistic content. So, if the music industry fails at its single purpose to produce good music, what exactly is the problem?
There are lots of problems, but I feel it can be argued that a major issue facing the record industry is one of structure. The way the music industry typically handles artists is akin to the old studio system employed by Hollywood in the 1920’s through the 1950’s. In old Hollywood, actors, techn
I just read an interesting post on Joshua Nemith's Cincinnati Pianist Blog about the benefits of scheduling shorter and more informal concerts, like concerts at a patron's home or other such intimate venue. Josh mentions having participated in these sort of events for different organizations in the past, and he highlights some of the benefits of these events:1) Audience/donor/musician connections. Today it’s all about breaking down that wall between the stage and the first row. Events like this let musicians get to know their audience members, and audience members get to know the musicians they see week after week on stage. It is also important for musicians (or any other artists) to learn about the people in their communities who can financially support artistic institutions. Those connections can lead to new endeavors or programs that enrich the arts scene of any town or city.2) Special musical opportunities for working musicians. There are not too many people in our field who w

The lights go dim and there is a hush in the room. You hear your name, and your hearts does that familiar big thump. Then you feel it, your heart as it drops down into the depth of your stomach. You take a breath, and remember to exhale, eventually. Its time. You take a step, but can’t feel your legs, you urge another step forward and will your funny legs just to hold you up and take you there.
Somehow you make it to the center of the stage. You have to say something, but your mouth is bone dry, your palms slippery and sweaty. You open your mouth and there is a lump in your throat that doesn’t seem to want to make the words come out. Sometimes you even feel like crying. Stage fright - you know what I mean.
Causes of Stage fright
Before we look at some of the ways that we can manage stage fright better we will consider what causes it. Stage fright is most commonly an anxiety attack, a reaction to an uncomfortable situation. Other factors may also contri
Violinist Holly Mulcahy (who has suggested many a good cat video for this blog) wrote an excellent post on The Partial Observer about how a career as a professional orchestra musician can make one feel like a zoo animal. Holly has been a member of several professional orchestras, including the Richmond Symphony and the Delaware Symphony. Here is a snippet from her post:If anyone would have told me that 15 years into a career as a professional orchestra musician might make me feel like a zoo animal I would have laughed in their face. Nevertheless, 15 years into my career and that's exactly how I feel, or at least that's how it seems for some of the time. A number of factors contribute to this. First, as a single member of up to 100 performers, you come across as a nameless, faceless member of a collective. Add to that being a member of the most predominant instrument in any orchestra, a violinist, you have even less of an identity. Then there's all the black and white we have to w
