The Modern Art Movements
The Modern Art movements can be said to have begun in the mid 19th century. Up until this point, the artists of the world focused their artwork on realistic depictions of the world around them. They made their living solely on commission work, government sponsorship, and exhibitions chosen by government officials. Needless to say, a change was about to come. Insisting that there was more to express and teach through art was not only an artistic movement, but a social development as well.
The first group dedicated to this change were the Impressionists in Paris, circa 1860. The term was coined by a Claude Monet painting called Impression, Sunrise. The artists belonging to the movement were the same artists who had been rejected by the Academie des Beaux-Arts&ndash
My early thoughts about this art world icon were sorely incomplete and inwardly deceptive, this figure had a very silent but exposive personality that caused everyone who met him to misinterpret him. Behind the blonde hair and nu vogue wardrobe lied a rather intriquing and accomplished visual artist - an artist that would change society and help usher in the “pop culture". Andy Warhol was a catalyst for a new world structuralization of our normal psyche, revealing a new and a exciting chapter in our ways of viewing the art world. He showed that the visual arts can commune with and influence all in a very profund way.The vision of Andy Warhol was in the changing of what we as consumers of visual communication consider art, and thereby challenging the established criteria by which the arts are judged by the art world elite. Warhol’s cans, portraits and other works were an attempt to lead the way in this direction. Since his rampage on the art scene, art has become more accessible to

Edinburgh’s modern art collection is housed in two adjacent buildings, the Dean Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art, to the west of the city centre in Dean.
The Dean Gallery
I paid a brief visit to the Gallery of Modern Art this week. I know it’s not always possible but I much prefer short visits to galleries and museums where you focus on a specific topic or artist. If I try to spend hours during a visit, I just feel that I can’t take it all in. I looked at the black and white works depicting the Fist World War. The were two pieces which made the biggest impression on me. The Card Players by Otto Dix which portrays 3 war veterans injured during action, one is playing with his mouth, another with his foot. The other was “Death Marches” by Percy Smith, one of seven in the Dance of Death series of etchings from 1919. It shows the eager new infantry recruits marching four abreast with the ghostly figure of Death surveying its fresh batch of v

The first large wind turbine has been unveiled in Crewe this week. It's at the back of Tesco's car park, tucked away next to the Railway Age. Not that you can hide this beastie. Personally, I love them. Magnificent structures that serve a purpose. I'd have one at home but the smaller versions are not viable. The purchase price and environmental cost of producing them is unlikely to be recovered over many years, so certain statistics reveal (check out this BBC link). Tesco have committed to rolling out a number of turbines to help power their stores' lighting at supermarkets up and down the country. Crewe is one of the first. I think it's a bold move, locating an Eco-friendly power source in the centre of a town. And there can surely be few complaints. The town's skyline has been dominated by pylons, railway cabling and floodlights for years. And wind noise? Come on, it's next to a busy road and railway line that already generate plenty of noise. So well done Tesco. What do you m
Modern art touches a sore spot, or several sore spots, in the ordinary citizen of which he is totally unaware. The more irritated he becomes at modern art the more he betrays the fact that he himself, and his civilization, are implicated in what the artist shows him.
