Hovis advert uses miners' strike reenactment
I was watching ITV last night and noticed that the latest Hovis advert has a recreation of the 1984 miners' strike as part of its drive to flog bread. It is interesting how historical events, even ones like the miners' strike that brought great hardship among working class communities and led to an economic sea change, become moments of nostalgia. Then again, many of the striking miners were keen to

He doesn’t tell his mother about his work because it makes her cry. Early monsoon threatens Indonesia's coal output-miners
Early monsoon rains descending on Indonesia's coal producing region of Kalimantan are threatening to cut output from the world's largest thermal coal exporter, Indonesian producers said on Monday. Major Indonesian producers, including PT Bumi Resources and PT Adaro, told Reuters the West Monsoon, which typically begins in December and last to March, started around the beginning of November and could jeopardise production if rainfall gets heavier."The rain season has come a couple of weeks earlier than usual and we're barely making out monthly production target," said a source at Bumi Resources, which produces about a third of Indonesia's total thermal coal output through its subsidiaries PT Kaltim Prima and PT Arutmin."We're getting by on a hand-to-mouth basis. I'd say the situation is quite critical," the source said.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com

      A Camera for the Miners
Although there has been no life detected in the mine that collapsed in Utah the search for the miners will continue. Federal officials say that a bore hole will be drilled and a camera will be inserted into the mine to search for the lost miners. This camera is similar to the one used to search for people in the wreckage after 911. The families of the miners are excited by this after previous reports that there probably wouldn’t be any more searches done for the miners. previous holes have found that any pockets may be too small for anyone to have survived but that has not deterred the families hope. I sincerely hope that this attempt to find out for sure if the miners are still alive will be a success.

CANADA: Canadian uranium miners hit by price falloff
Shares of Canadian uranium producers have fallen to their lowest levels since last year, as a global equity selloff has added to the woes of a sector suffering from a sudden price reversal and a string of bad news hitting its biggest player.Cameco Corp., the world's largest producer, hit a nine-month low of $39.25 on the Toronto Stock Exchange Friday, a full 34% off its peak of $59.90 reached in June, though it rebounded later in the session.Uranium One, which hopes to challenge Cameco's dominance over the next six years, touched a 10-month low of $9.85, while Denison Mines fell to a nine-month low of $9.12, down 45% from a record high in May.While the most recent leg of the slide has been partly due to the broader market's sell-off over worries about credit markets, the retreat by uranium players has outdistanced peers both in the broader market and among Canadian resource stocks.Cameco has also been hit by a series negative events - most notably the flooding of its Cigar Lake mine

      Pray For The Miners
The Utah mine collapse is all over the news. Several broadcasts show local residents displaying large banners that say something like "pray for the miners." When I see such signs, a question never fails to pop into my mind: Why? Of course, we're all hoping that they'll find the miners unharmed, but why would anyone call for prayer when there is clear evidence that intercessory prayer is ineffective?Of course, many believers find evidence completely irrelevant. They believe because their parents believed, and they've never really questioned it. They believe because they are rewarded by their communities for doing so. Most of all, they believe based on faith, precluding the use of reason or evidence. If I had a loved one who had either died or was trapped underground in the Utah mine collapse, I would not want to see any of these signs. I'd rather see my neighbors doing anything that would have a reasonable probability of actually helping. And when it became clear that there was nothi

Links 8/10: Market Crash, Utah Miners, Obama Fundraising, Shrinking Ice Caps, Dems on Gays, Giuliani Bashing, Hillary on the Planet
The Suits are having a stressful week. Global financial markets have been falling dramatically since yesterday, following the decision of France’s largest publicly-owned bank to freeze some of its funds with exposure to the US housing credit market, as well as the announcement Thursday of a major US mortgage firm that an increase in homeowner defaults caused its $50 million losses for the second-quarter. The scare sparked panic among banks and their investors whose investments face similar exposure, raising many governments’ fears of a global “credit crunch” in which banks reign in credit lines to one another. Virtually all US, European, and Asian markets have suffered losses, prompting central banks in many countries to intervene with extra cash to calm these markets. A narrow drill has reached the void where those Utah miners are trapped, but offers no indication that they are alive. Boston Globe on the Hillary v Obama argument over how their campaigns

Minnesota Department of Health withheld data about mesothelioma affecting miners for a year before making it public
The Minnesota Department of Health discovered in March 2006 that 35 more Iron Range miners had been diagnosed with mesothelioma-a cancer of the lung lining associated with asbestos exposure-but withheld the information from the public for a year. In fact, the Health Department had drafted a press release about the increased incidence of mesothelioma, but only planned to make the release public if word of the mesothelioma cases leaked to the public. According to the state Health Commissioner, she decided to withhold the studies because the department needed time for new studies about mining and diseases. Public health experts and union officials are highly critical of this decision. Mining operations use asbestos on pipes and boilers. There is also concern that exposure to taconite dust might play a role. Over 4,000 workers are employed in Minnesota's iron-ore industry. For the full story, go to http://news.postbulletin.com/

      Minnesota Iron Miners Developed Mesothelioma
ST. PAUL, MN — May 21, 2007 — Fifty–two workers employed in Minnesota’s iron mining industry have developed mesothelioma since 1998, according to Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) statistics (News Release, March 28, 2007). From 1988 through 2005, the total number of mesothelioma sufferers in the northeastern mining region of the state numbered 136. These figures are twice as high as in other parts of Minnesota, the MDH said, and may be underestimates because prior to 1999, mesothelioma was often coded on state death certificates as another cancer.Mesothelioma is almost always caused by asbestos. An earlier MDH study found 17 iron workers with mesothelioma; the agency discovered 35 more workers among that group with the disease last month. BC land-owners vulnerable to prospecting miners
It appears that mining rights to much of BC's land has been bought up - thanks, at least in part, to the provincial government's online staking system. According to Kendyl Salcito in The Tyee, this system:allows anyone with internet access and $25 to acquire a miner's license and then, at $0.17 an acre, buy mineral rights to land. It doesn't matter whether that land belongs to a neighbour, the Crown, or the "miner" himself. Once you own the mineral rights, you are free to "explore" your claims, wander the property, "poke at a few rocks," in the words of MP Tom Christensen. And once you decide to start drilling and digging, even the landowner's dwelling and buildings are at risk.
