      When Milestones Pass
It’s an odd sort of thing when a major milestone in your life passes by so quietly that even you do not realize it has happened. When I graduated from high school back in 1998, two things were certain. The first was that I had no clue what in the hell I was going to [...]

My 10 month old daughter started crawling this week. After weeks of being a hair’s breadth to crawling this has got to feel pretty good for her. Andrew at 11 Months - His Milestones
It is hard for me to accept, but my little baby boy is already 11 months old. In celebration of his birthday, I thought I would look at the milestones for a typical baby at 11 months, and see how Andrew is progressing. Most of these are from the AAP.First steps. Andrew isn't walking yet, but he is starting to stand on his own and keep his balance. I expect him to start walking sooner than later.Pu

This got me thinking about milestones and the bitter-sweet feelings they bring with them. Ciara has physically been an incredibly easy child to mother. College Basketball Milestones
Basketball is a favorite pastime of kids and adults alike. American kids grow up with dreams of earning scholarships and reaching fame in the college league. Basketball owes its origin to Dr. James Naismith, who invented the sport in 1892. Before long, the popularity of the game caught on and it was being played in American colleges. The first official game involving a college team was played between Geneva College and the New Brighton YMCA in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania on April 8, 1893. On February 9, 1895, the first intercollegiate game was played between the Minnesota State School of Agriculture and Hamline College. Minnesota won that game, 9 to 3. The introduction of the five-player format was the next major college basketball milestone. This happened during an intercollegiate game in

2011 Chevrolet Volt - GM checks off milestones in the development of its gasoline-electric plug-in vehicle
General Motors is developing the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle and its lithium-ion battery pack on parallel paths—and both have passed significant milestones en route to a targeted November 2010 launch. Larry Burns, GM vice-president of research and development and strategic planning, tells Car and Driver in an interview that the design of the car has been frozen. Although the production model is not a twin of the Volt concept, the more conventional sedan bears a family resemblance to the Chevy Malibu. And in the interests of speed, it dips into parts bins of existing GM products wherever possible. That likely includes an existing four-cylinder gasoline engine as the onboard means of recharging the battery that, alone, gives the vehicle a range of only 40 miles. The car was designed ar

He states, “The principles of physics, as far as I can see, do not speak against the possibility of maneuvering things atom by atom. It is not an attempt to violate any laws; it is something, in principle, that can be done; but in practice, it has not been done because we are too big." This is often seen as year zero for nanotechnology because of the breadth and depth of Feynman's vision and the inspiration it gave to many, but there is no doubt there was nanotechnology before this and it would have developed as it has anyway, although maybe a little slower.1974First molecular electronic device patentedAviram and Seiden of IBM file the first ever pat

      2 Month Old Milestones!
I figured I would start writing a post once a month on developmental milestones in the first year. I myself have no clue on what I’m doing or what my child should be doing, so I have been getting alot of advice from doctors and friends who have  children and some online literature. I figured I would share them with the rest of the new mommies out there!!! Your baby should be following objects as they pass by their face at about 6 inches away. Starting to have better control of there head and can hold it up almost without any assistance. Baby can roll over in one direction. Baby is smiling when your smile and make faces at them. She responds to loud sounds by becoming completely silent, crying or acting startled. Baby is cooing or making noises. Baby laughs out loud or makes loud squealing noises. Again, every child is different, so don’t freak out if you’re child hasn’t done any or all of these yet! For example, our daughter still hasn’t rolled over to

New Milestones And A Bright Future
I have been working tremendously hard for the past few months to shape up this blog. A while back, I wrote a post outlining how I felt that this blog was severely under performing. In fact, being a finance student, I would have recognized this blog as having strong potential but being poorly managed, thereby making it a takeover target. Well, I decided to take matters into my own hands, and with some help from my small, but loyal group of readers, I have reached some great milestones. Alexa Finally Likes Me! I know that being in the top 100,000 sites is no huge deal, but it was a goal that I set for myself a while ago. I remember being in the millions and it seems like getting to this point was a great achievement. There were spikes in traffic along the way, thanks mostly to Stumbleupon, but otherwise I have seen a nice upward trend in traffic. As far as the Alexa rankings are concerned, I truly believe that some of the tactics I tried that were specifically geared towards Alexa reall

      Grim Milestones
The media is full of grim milestones. From the number of US casualities in Iraq to the number of terrorists killed by Israelis. But little note is made of the grim milestones of Palestinian violence against each other. Elder of Ziyon has noted that a grim milestone has been passed. A 2 year old Palestinian girl was shot in the back of the head and became the 500th Palestinian killed by another Palestinian this year. Since that incident, 4 others have been killed. Soccer Dad, in his post, For Whom the Death Tolls has a great round-up of others blogging about this grim milestone. Seraphic Press observes: Who cares if little Arab girls are are mowed down my machine gun bullets: Inshallah, right? Or to the liberal mind: It's Israel's fault anyway because they are, y'know, so mean to the peace loving Arabs who want nothing more than to sit under their olive trees and recite poetry. At what point will liberals, news media, politicians, and the world acknowledge that they are not tru

How fabulous is that? More people link to my blog now than go to watch Colwyn Bay FC play football in Feburary. Marvellous. Also, to celebrate, Technorati rightfully listed me as the best blog in the history of the world, ever. And do you know what really made me happy about that? The 300th blog was a review! Monkeyboy reviewed me on Saturday, and was the 300th Blog to link to me. Also, he was the first blog to submit a review for Fair Review, but wasn’t the last this weekend. If you’d like to get more readers for your blog, why not take part in Fair Review? The other, and more important thing is this from my feedburner stats: On Thursday, I finally broke the 100 subscribers to my RSS Feed. It had taken me 5 or so years (of which I’ve only been trying for 2 or so) to do so, but I’ve fina

      Milestones in data backup evolution
Punch cards can be considered as the first data storage devices for backup. They date back to the early 1950’s, being used as a medium for storage for the UNIVAC I. Next came the Magnetic Tapes. Since one roll of magnetic tape could store as much data as 10,000 punch cards, it achieved instant success and became the most popular way of storing of computer data until the mid 1980s. In the 1960’s and 1970’s hard drives were not suitable for backups because of their high price, large size and low capacity. However, already in the mid 1980s hard disks could already be considered for making backups. In the early 1990s they became a real alternative for tape backups. Even today, the “battle” between tape and disk backup still rages on. In the early 1990’s CD-R were not commonly used for backups, because of high costs. But later, when CD-ROM drive became a usual device for practically every computer and prices for compact disks tangibly fell, backup on CD became very p

      Milestones
Milestones are difficult, of course. We chose to ignore Christmas, and, as long as we stuck with it, it wasn't so bad. We had to leave the country however. Other milestones have come and gone, my birthday, a non event as we were far away. Oldest son's birthday, but he opted to be away that weekend (notice a pattern here?). Mother's Day, not too bad, after all, it was all about me and my sons, how bad can that be? But the graduations....that's a bit different. Can't go away for those. We had two graduations last week, one from high school, the other from graduate school. Alot of emotion there. How proud I was, and am. Bursting with pride. How difficult it was for my boys to carry on, through the 22 months of Lou's illness, and through the devastation afterwards. They kept going. They did more then that. They overcame it, they did not let this define them. They succeeded in spite of it. No, really, they excelled. They worked hard. They achieved their goals. I am so proud of them.

May is Always Special, But This May Marks the Anniversary of Several Milestones.
Spring is one of my favorite times of year and since May is usually when the spring storms begin to calm down and the temperatures become more consistent I guess that contributes to my fondness for the month. May also seems to be a milestone month for me. I seem to have more transitions in my [...]

      One day, two milestones
First: This afternoon Asher was feeling down in the dumps. I was wearing him in the sling to cheer him up, and wandered over to a full length mirror where I spent a few minutes trying to rub something off my nose. Asher has always enjoyed giggling at the gorgeous baby in the mirror (and who wouldn't!) but today he watched, going between me rubbing my nose, and the reflection of me rubbing my nose. A few minutes into this, and I noticed his demeanor change drastically. He was now looking at himself, with great excitement and aplomb, and was doing his best to wiggle out of the sling. I took him out and stood him up by the mirror where he put his hands and face to it, touching "the baby" that was actually a mirror, becoming more and more excited. He couldn't get enough of reaching for the baby and touching the mirror. This is totally different than his normal reaction. I can't say for sure, but I think the concept of his reflection broke through to him today, and he realized that he sa

      Verbal Milestones
At Baby Bug’s last well-baby check-up, not only was the Pediatrician concerned about her appearance but she also made a comment on her lack of vocabulary skills. She is now 15 months old and she hasn’t form a single comprehensible word. Of course, there are times when I swear she says “Mama” or “Hi” but those are few and far between. Then again I could just be imagining it. I know they say that all children develop at their own pace and that you shouldn’t compare them, but I can’t help it. Girlie Girl knew her alphabet by the time she was 18 months. How can I not think about that? When did your kids start talking? Any advice on how I can help develop her vocabulary? I read to her every day and try to engage her in conversation whenever I can. Who knows, maybe one day she’ll open her mouth and start talking in sentences!
