      Some Notes On Print-Meters
Of the many forms of print-meters, or actinometers, the type dependent upon miniature negatives of graduated density is preferred by some, as no matching of tint is required, and for occasional work with only a few frames exposed it certainly is convenient. On the other hand, the most accurate of all probably is the "single-tint" tint-matching type, almost essential when many frames have

Basically, it meant coming in top 3, and not leaving the rest to chance. I got lane 2, which is normally an unfavorable lane, but this track was a “fat” track: 122 meter curve and 78 meter straightaway! I had a good start, with a little pop-up instead of driving out of the blocks. I immediately make up the stagger on 2 guys, but De Feo of Italy makes up the stagger on me within 60 meters. Isashi of Japan runs well out of lane 6, so I ended up in 3rd place. I am relieved as I don’t have to wait for the next 8 heats to see if I qualify on time. The Quarter-Finals were 90 minutes later… enough time to put on my sweats, grab a drink, go to the stands, check in with my family, then back to the warm up track and the contr

The biggest LCD in the world measures 6000 square meters
Stretched across a 6000 square meters, the gigantic LCD from Beijing (China) is without a doubt the biggest in the world. In total, seven HD players (five for a the vido show, one for the day screen and a last one for stand-by) assures that we’re feeling like in Sci Fi flick. How does it work? By synchronizing the five HD sources, mentioned above. Practically, the whole display is built from a five XGA display vector, their syncronization fools viewers to think their a actual whole. The electricity consumption can reach up to 2 MW (demanded by the 14.5 million LEDs), that’s enough energy to light over 8000 houses. The display is part of a major project, a hi-tech building called “The Palace.” More photos at the TechEBlog.

I won’t make excuses, but a lack of racing didn’t help (this was only my 3rd 100m of the year). In order to peak for a 100m, you have to run 5-7 races under your belt in a given season. For a 400m, 3-5 races is sufficient. With 97 entries, and 72 declared athletes, this results in 9 heats on a 8 lane track, “2P6T” or

Retail space in Dubai to exceed four million square meters by 2010
The shopping malls in Dubai, particularly the old and small ones, will soon begin to experience the pressure of decline in rents, as the city is all set to create an additional two million square meters of leasable area within a three year period, a real estate consultancy has revealed. In that case, the supply of retail space for shopping malls in Dubai will exceed four million square meters by 2010, as against the current 1.8million square meters. Colliers International, in its report, mentioned that this huge supply of retail space will bring-forth short-term oversupply in the market. The smaller and older malls will then see sharp increase in vacancies, coupled with fall in rentals. With an aim to be a top tourist and shopping destination, Dubai is building large shopping centers. UAE ranks next to Hong Kong in recreational shopping. The report states "These mega malls will strongly root the Dubai dominance in the retail industry across the region."

Video of 2001 World Championships 200 meters
There was a lot of buzz from the photo finish image of the 2001 World Championships 200 meters where someone asked me to post the video. In this video, Kenteris is in 7th or 8th position at 100 meters, but it doesn’t matter, as he holds his form (and speed endurance!) well over the last 50 meters. Everyone else is struggling, trying to get in the medals, and he made it look so easy. I won’t get into the allegations or accusations with Kenteris, as those can be found on other websites. How big is one acre in square meters?
So here I was, reading this ad about a beautiful house on a huge block of land. To be more specific, it was sitting on 1 acre allotment and I was thinking – how really big is it, how many square meters is one acre? It’s a fact that people from different countries use different measurement units, a person from Europe is used to square meters and kilometers, while someone from US is used to square feet, yards and miles and in Australia they use both square meters and acres. And most of us know that there are feet, meters, acres and hectares but we never know how to do the conversions between those. So for all of those wondering, here goes: 1 acre = 43,560 square feet = 4047 sq meters = 0.4047 hectares. 1 square yard = 9 sq feet = 0.836 sq meters If you can think of any other useful conversions, comment on this post and I will have them added. After all, if you’d like to know – I bet someone else has the same question.

Calculating Splits for the 400 meters
I wish reporters would realize it takes about 1 second to account for acceleration out of the blocks. In Michael Phillip’s Furious Pistorius Blade Runner slams IAAF, Oscar Pistorius, the South African Paralympian, ran 47.65 before he was disqualified for running out of his lane. They quote: [… Pistorius clocked 47.65 before his time was wiped out. He has a best of 46.34, but significantly last night he ran quicker in the second half of the race than the first, with hand-timed splits of 24.4 and 23.3. …] Of course his second half is significantly quicker! The second 200m has a running start! His “splits” can be calculated as (1.0 + 23.4) + 23.3, so he ran a very even paced race. UPDATE: The video of this race can be found on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXKZSdGfBoc Non-even paced 400 meters Not everyone can or should run even paced splits for the 400 meters. Butch Reynolds and Mike Larabee, the 1964 400m Olympic champion, are names

Race Strategy - How to run the 400 meters
What’s the best way to run the 400 meters? Go hard for 300 meters and hang on; and if you die, you die? Or run even pace splits? Both work depending on your conditioning and experience. Once you have a race plan, you stick with it. Of course, talk it over with your coach first! In 1992, I was able to run back to back 400 meters with a 48.37 (semi-finals) and 48.36 (finals) 24 hours apart using both strategies. Hours before the gun went off, it was clear in my mind how I wanted to run my race. However, your strategy may backfire. Herb McKenley of Jamaica tried both tactics in the 1948 & 1952 Olympic finals, only to be beaten by his own teammates! (Arthur Wint ‘48, George Rhoden ‘52) Even pace For instance, in 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, Butch Reynolds was the favorite and liked to run even splits. He won the US Olympic Trials in 43.93 and ran a WR of 43.29 in August with a superior last 150m. In the Olympic finals, he had drawn lane 3 inside of

Michael Johnson’s racing strategy in the 400 meters
This excerpt was from www.MichaelJohnson.com which sadly no longer exists. There were a lot of good articles. One of them involved wearing a special Nike speedsuit that measured his 400m splits at every 50 meter increments at the 2000 Prefontaine meet. His approach was using four “P”s: in the first 100m, “push” out of the blocks to near top speed, “pace” the 100m backstretch, “position” himself in the 3rd 100m curve, and “pray” the last 100m homestretch! His splits indicate slowing down on the 3rd 100m, and even more so on the last 100m, despite being mentally aware of trying to speed up! There was a nice graph and all the 50m splits related to that race which I didn’t copy, however, I did manage to keep his article. Enjoy! The start The start is still important even though it’s a 400 meters. For me, being a 200m and 400-meter runner, it’s important that I don’t get in the same aggressive mod

The Meters - People Say (1974)
The Meters defined New Orleans funk, not only on their own recordings, but also as the backing band for numerous artists, including many produced by Allen Toussaint. Where the funk of Sly Stone and James Brown was wild, careening, and determinedly urban, the Meters were down-home and earthy. Nearly all of their own recordings were instrumentals, putting the emphasis on the organic and complex rhythms. The syncopated, layered percussion intertwined with the gritty grooves of the guitar and organ, creating a distinctive sound that earned a small, devoted cult during the '70s, including musicians like Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer, both of whom used the group as a backing band for recording. Despite their reputation as an extraordinary live band, the Meters never broke into the mainstream, but their sound provided the basis for much of the funk and hip-hop of the '80s and '90s.Throughout their career, the Meters were always led by Art Neville (keyboard, vocals), one of the leading f

      Platinum Anniversary for Parking Meters
The next time you're fumbling around for coins to feed the meter so you can run into Starbucks for a venti half-caff triple mocha soy latte with a shot, thank Carl Magee. In 1932, he invented the parking meter as a solution to parking problems in downtown Oklahoma City. As recounted in the Wall Street Journal, his invention was met with ridicule, indignation and lawsuits. For a while, it looked like the courts would side with the public. But greed civic responsibility eventually prevailed, and the "combination of an alarm clock and a slot machine which is being used for further socking the motorist" became commonplace. But it wasn't just motorist swho had to pay. In 1936, San Antonio city officials forced farmers to park their horse-drawn wagons at what became a coin-op hitching post.
