      Georgia: Chess Metaphors
Vladimir Putin lost several pawns on the chessboard - Kosovo, Iraq, Nato membership for the Baltic states, US renunciation of the ABM treaty, US missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic. But he waited. The trap was set in Georgia. When President Saakashvili blundered into South Ossetia, sending...

      The Metaphors We Live By
Are you feeling down today? Want to know how to save time? He’s in a dark mood today. I’m trying to get more done. All of the sentences above involve the use of metaphors. “The essence of metaphors,” Lakoff and Johnson argued in Metaphors We Live By, “is understanding one kind of [...]

6th District Dems & Human Sacrifice Metaphors
Rep. Goodlatte's (R-6th) Democratic challenger will have the honor of being the first Dem to face off against him in ten years! Goodlatte will easily spank whoever it may be, but before the carnage takes place it seems the two Democrats vying for nomination have sparked an intra-party squabble that includes some great campaign cannibalism. To begin, Sam Rasoul made the faux pas of the year by

A Storm of Pain, and other shameless metaphors
Humans are interesting creatures, not unlike animals in their desire to shun pain, to do what they can to avoid the sting of a wound, be it physical or emotional. About the time I stopped posting to my blog I had stepped into the axis of my pain, and I have to admit, it surprised me.Just weeks earlier I had been talking with my friend Mary, explaining that I had already mourned the end of my marriage three years ago. All that was left to grieve was the impact it was having on my children (can we say denial?). I was efficiently moving through my divorce, checking through these emotional steps like items on a To-Do list. That’s when the unbearable pain hit me, stealing my breath. Suddenly my heart resembled a split melon, wide and messy with emotion. I thought I was going to die, thought I wanted to die, and gravitated towards my ex, the only one who truly understood how much our divorce hurt. Not until this moment have I recognized two types of pain. One steals upon you slowly and befo

      Dominated by ambulist metaphors
Victoria ponders how English - a language she loves - is institutionally 'disablist' While at junior school, I was fortunate enough to have a remarkable teacher called Mrs Brown (not her real name) who was passionate about English literature. It was Mrs Brown who first introduced me to Classics by giving me a children’s story about the fall of Troy. (Little did she realise that nine years late

A whole host of blogging metaphors
Liz Strauss of Successful Blog fame has recently been running another wildly successful Group Writing exercise where she asked her readers to define their own metaphor for blogging, ideally to help explain it to those coming to blogging for the first time. A huge range of really good and incredibly diverse metaphors were forthcoming which it seems appropriate to share here so that you can peruse them at your leisure. There were also some “winners” chosen - randomly I might add, since my own Blogging Metaphor was one of them - who will be receiving a copy of Lorelle’s book “Blogging Tips — What Bloggers Won’t Tell You About Blogging“. The ten winners were: 10 reasons why blogging is like dating” at Romance Tracker Bloggers, Brains and Metaphors at BrainBasedBusiness Blogging Metaphor: Why blogging is like a Mommy at Moments of Clarity What’s Your Blogging Metaphor? Mixed Fruits and Metaphors
EXT. GARDEN OF EDEN. DAY.Adam is busily scribbling on a piece of paper with a pencil when God quietly walks up beside him.God: Hey Adam, what's up?Adam: Oh, uh... hey, there, God. I was just, you know, coming up with some more animal names.God: I thought you named all the animals already.Adam: The Mediterranean animals, yeah. But I figure that you've got a lot of animals in other climates that still need names.God: What's a 'polar bear'?Adam: Geez, I don't know. A bear that like poles? You don't have to use it if you don't want.God: No, no, it's a good name. I'll come up with something. Ooh, I like this one. Kangaroo. Sounds like something you could put in your pocket. Speaking of which, I noticed you're wearing trousers stitched together from leaves.Adam: Oh, that. Yeah, I was feeling a little self-conscious with all my, you know, parts hanging out.God: Did you eat from that tree I told you not to eat from?Adam: Ummmm... Actually that was the woman.God: The woman?

What is metaphysics? What are metaphors?
By TRACEY SMITHJustaTrace.net(Insert great opening line here.)As we speak it's early Saturday evening, and I've been put in charge of a skillet of Stroganoff Hamburger Helper.I'm also waiting for it to snow. According to The Weather Channel, I should be prepared to go and stand outside precisely at 7:00 PM to carefully monitor it.Between the Hamburger Helper, contingency plans for a possible blizzard, and writing this column, I'm juggling nearly three chainsaws at once. But, that's just the kind of guy I am... The faint of heart need not stroll my way.(Spit.)Good friend Jeremy was in town last night and we actually had a great time. We did the usual Man Stuff--like sitting out on my driveway (in a car, stupid) until 3:00 AM, drinking beverages and merely joking around about throwing our empties over in the Bad Neighbor's yard across the street.Jeremy was concerned that I may have been abducted by aliens (repeatedly) in the past--and I was concerned that he was concerned.(Hold on a
