Libya has begun distributing compensation money to families whose children died of HIV in Libyan hospitals. This may influence Libya’s High Judicial Council, which will soon decide the fate of several Bulgarian medics who were sentenced to death after being accused of having deliberately infected patients with HIV.

A court in Libya hearing a defamation trial involving five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor will deliver a verdict on 27 May.

SEPANG, May 2 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Defence Forces are sending their third medical team for a United Nations (UN) mission in Western Sahara.A spokesman of the ATM Medical Division said the 20-member team from the Royal Medical Corps would serve under the UN banner for six months.The ATM despatched their first medical team to the area in May last year, replacing the one from South Korea who completed their 12-year mission from 1994.The medical mission is part of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso) that was established following the agreement between the Moroccan government and a movement called Polisario.Minurso was deployed in September 1991 to monitor the ceasefire and to organise and conduct a referendum which will allow the people of Western Sahara to decide the territory's future status.
A Libyan court has sentenced five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor to death for knowingly infecting hundreds of Libyan children with HIV. The medics have been in detention since 1999, during which time 52 of the 426 infected children have died of Aids. The nurses and doctor were sentenced to death in 2004, but the Supreme Court quashed the ruling after protests over the fairness of the trial.
