When the French Country Kitchens Go Marching In...
I'm sitting here listening to WWOZ radio on the net as I often do, listening to a very modern version of "When the Saints Go Marching In" part rap, part gospel, part jazz, and of course, with that New Orleans influence everywhere. I know, you're saying "whaaaa?" but trust me, it's a good thing. Now, here comes another rendition after that one? Ok, I'll take it!Oy vey, so how do I weave this into k

Let’s go marching at Ohio State
I’m not sure if I told anybody, but I’m originally from Ohio. Growing up in a town of only 5,000 people, I’m a small town girl at heart. Things were so much different then. When I was twelve years old, I used to bike ride four miles on country roads to the neighboring town to visit friends. That’s not likely to happen nowadays. Another thing you probably didn’t know is that when I was i

      We're Marching On - 1800s
Towards the end of ‘1800s’ it starts to sound as if another song is clouding the listening experience. It becomes clear at the end however that in the background a ferocious blend of drumbeats is doing it’s damndest to be heard. ‘1800s’ is a work of many parts and may take a few spins to turn the puzzle into something resembling a comfortable listen. This can be off putting but you should be able to figure out that it is worth it from the word go. We’re Moving On are from Toronto and released the ‘Argh! Umph! Ahhh!’ EP last year. Sort of appropriately named actually given the feast of surprises supplied by ‘1800s’ and the array of instruments that must have been wheeled into the studio to execute it’s ramshackle nature. I've braved your ice, snow, sleet and grey for too long. I've survived, though just barely at times, my eyes and heart firmly fixed upon the green horizon. You have been defeated. All that is left now are whatever remnants tossed hither and yon which may find their way to my fair state by accident. Due out sometime in October, it will sport as funky a name as its earlier counterparts - it'll be called "Intrepid Ibex" a.k.a. version 8.10. Intrepid Ibex is intended to significantly improve mobile computing and desktop scalability. In this version, the developers have paid attention on the aspect of the pervasive Internet, through which users will be able to remain connected irrespective of where they are in a connected city. This version will enable your computer to tap bandwidth no matter where you are- we Indians will have to wait a bit, though -- it'll let your computer hop from broadband to Wi-Fi and skip back to broadband as you move around. But since the US presidential nominating process is going to be rolling through my state 16 days from now, I thought that it may be interesting to make a few observations. Channel surfing this evening, I saw the interview above, which I thought was fascinating. The interview has two governors from the same Democratic Party who are supporting two different candidates for the nomination. The first is Governor James Doyle from Wisconsin (pictured to left above) who is supporting Sen. Barack Obama for the Demorcatic Presidential nomination. The second is Governor Ted Strickland from Ohio (pictured to right above) who is supporting Sen. Hillary Clinton. I have particular interest in this because Gov. She was married to Gustav Klutsis (see his posters) - another representative of Vkhutemas-artist generation. This very poster has a strong influence of suprematism, an art movement originated by Kazimir Malevich. The giant red figures of soviet soldiers in budenovkas (military cap) are marching with their shouldered rifles. The slogan is simple and motivating: “To Defend USSR”. The poster space is multidimensional, with three color areas contrasting. The distorted cubist perspective of the factories in the left bottom corner adds another dimension. The idea behind is that both factories and the Red Army add to the defense potential of the country. The workers are transforming into determined soldiers as they are marching away from their workplaces. And the white airplane silhouettes fly thro

The release contained a list of steering committee leaders including the name Keith Kerr, retired Colonel., U.S. Army; retired Brigadier General, California National Reserve.Has Hillary grown weary of planting her own questions? Running My Marching Band Rehearsal With Bluetooth!
It had to happen…Bluetooth meets Marching Band!  Over the summer, I went a little gadget crazy and purchased a Motorola DC800 stereo bluetooth gateway and a NaviPlay stereo bluetooth adapter.  When you clicked on the links, you probably said “Why on earth did you spend $300 on those contraptions to beat up on the marching field?” Here’s the thing- I spent a grand total of $60 for BOTH! I have been keeping my eye on them ever since they made their debut in Radio Shack last year (at full price).  Being a technology realist (no, really…) I knew that the world of bluetooth was still at least a generation away from making it to the mainstream.  After all, look around and all you see are those little bluetooth earpieces- hardly scratching the surface of it’s potential.  With the advent of the A2DP stereo bluetooth profile, there are a whole host of great handsfree stereo options on the way. Now for the application: I use the setup to “run” my marching

Marching Band: Kennywood Park Or Bust!
This article is from MUSicTECHnology.net  ~Copyright 2007, J. Pisano/mustech.net   Marching Band has it’s perks…   Today we take the band to Kennywood Park , a well known amusement park in Pittsburgh, PA.  This year the Mighty Grove City Wolverines are marching 171 strong, including 30 fronts.  Although many big state universities have bands almost double this size, as far as we know, there are no colleges under 3000 that march as many as we do.  Our band varies in size from year to year from 160 to over 200. We march 6 across with the percussion in the middle.  Instrumentally we effectively have two full bands separated by the percussion.  This allows for a consistent sound no matter where the listener may be.  The GCC wolverines are led by 6 herald trumpets sporting the GCC colors and insignia off their bells.  This makes for great e’spirit de corp and adds to the “pomp”. Marching...
The band marches on with a pleasing 6% made from two bets. My first thoughts on the racing were that it was a tough day and patience would definitely be needed. Ascot was a write off with the prices just being too big and nothing particuarly taking my eye. There was a nice lay in the first at Carlisle, Denbera Dancer, appeared just too short. I like Mark Johnston but at the moment he's struggling for form and his strike rate is reflecting this at a very lowly 6% for July. I couldn't see this drop in trip helping either and he eventually finished out of the frame. I had a little wait until my next lay but there was some good racing to keep me occupied and some chat discussion on the BF forum. Local Poet was an absolute steal at 3.1, I was genuinely surprised at how short it was and expressed those thoughts on my thread. Apparently Dave Nevison liked it, I respect him a huge amount but really can't understand his thinking on this one and Local Poet trailed home well beaten. So that wa

      Marching through the desert
I’m back from the parched and strikingly beautiful canyon lands of Utah. Henning and I spent a week and a half driving between national parks to hike and take in a good ol’ dose of pure nature. We managed to log over 2200 driving miles and 100 hiking miles in the process, and all that in the heat of a summer desert. Needless to say, when we got back we were craving cool, fresh, exotic flavors. And we needed a vacation from our vacation. Somehow it always happens like this when Henning is in charge of the planning. Henning bumped in to our neighbors in the laundry room, trying to get the smell of dusty red dirt out of our clothes. Since he was leaving for a month in Germany in a few days and he wouldn’t see them again before they move out, he invited them over for dinner. To appease our desire for fresh and exotic, I cooked up some Thai food—fresh spring rolls, green papaya salad, and pad thai. It was exactly what we needed after a week and a half of pasta salads

      Marching as to Religious War
Responding to Senator Edwards’ comments that the war on terror is a “bumper sticker slogan”, Tancredo declares a different kind of war. “If Senator Edwards is saying that the war on terror doesn’t exist, I would agree”, Congressman Tancredo said. “Terror is a tactic used by the enemy with which we are at war. The enemy is radical Islam, and if he does not believe that, then he is delusional. America can’t afford a president that is an ostrich, with his head in the sand on this issue.” Tancredo Rips Edwards Comments on the War on Terror as “Bumper Sticker” Slogan Refers to Edwards as an “ostrich, with his head in the sand” It is interesting to me how more and more people are coming to realize that the “war on terror” rhetoric is junk. Terrorism is more like criminal activity than like war. It consequently needs to be fought like any other criminal activity– with the police and the courts, not with tanks and

Has anyone else faced this problem and how did you handle it???

Heritage Community Marching Band: Help This Incredible New Orleans Based Organization by Donating Musical Instruments

There are a number of organizations and people performing similar great acts of charity for the residents of New Orleans but I feel that Ken has really found a uniquely worthy group in the Hermitage Community Marching Band organization. Ken and his associates are collecting ALL types of instruments and related music items and personally delivering them to the band. He and his colleagues will drive the instruments and all donated items to New Orleans in mid-to late July of this year (2007). If you can afford to help out with this effort, in any way, I know that the students will genuinely appreciate and utilize your gifts to their fullest potential. In addition, Ken will be providing receipts of all donations directly to the donors. " [more]  VISIT MUSTECH.NET

Rightwing bloggers have been so fixated on John Kerry's dumb comment, I've almost forgotten what they used to write about. What happened to "family values," "stay the course," "gay marriage," "cut and run?" The rightwing automatons must have been running out of ammunition, because Kerry's "botched joke" sure has given them something to blather about. I don't know who's been sending out daily instructions to thousands of rightwing bloggers, but they sure did get the memo. Flocks of birds will often swoop and zigzag in unison, but Homo Sapiens doesn't operate that way. If several thousand people are walking along, you won't see them stopping and starting and turning in lockstep (unless they're military recruits following their Drill Instructor). Do rightwing bloggers have a drill instructor? Does Karl Rove have the e-mail address of each and every one of them? Surfing through the traffic exchange sites, it's all you see. It was all well-chronicled.''What happened was that in August 1962, the Beatles unceremoniously sacked Best and replaced him with drummer Ringo Starr. Two months later, Love Me Do hit the Top 20 in Britain, and the Beatles were off on their mind-blowing voyage. And Best, who was part of the band's founding years (including its infamous tours in Hamburg, Germany), became a tragic bystander to it all.''The hardest part was when Love Me Do went into the English charts,'' he said. ``We always knew once we had success on the English charts, we were on our way.''More than 44 years later, Best insists that things worked out just fine.
