GOP Platform Says Ethanol Mandate Must Go
The Corn Belt won’t be happy about this. Sarah Palin wasn’t the only surprise to come out of the Republican Convention. One of the planks in the GOP platform would whack the federal ethanol mandate, which calls for 36 billion gallons of U.S. produced ethanol to be blended into the nation’s fuel supply by 2012. This [...]

Florida to mandate greater use of renewable energy
Talking about renewable energy is nothing new in the Sunshine State, but the push for cleaner energy could soon become a legal mandate. For the first time, Florida is about to require that part of the state’s power come from renewable sources. The state has been promoting that idea with grants and tax exemptions for [...]

What is a Health Insurance Mandate and How Does it Affect You?
A health insurance mandate is something that a health insurance provider is required to cover, usually through State regulations. They can be imposed on all health insurance plans within the state or only on certain types of plans, such as group plans. Mandates usually fall under one of three categories: 1. Time’s Up – IPv6 OMB Mandate

      Verbs: mandate
One of the news stories in our publication today used a familiar verb in an unfamiliar way (unfamiliar to me, at least). The clause that included the verb in question went something like this:The EU directive mandated ongoing trainingI was familiar with 'mandate' meaning "give (someone) authority to act in a certain way" (Concise OED, first sense given); I wasn't familiar with it meaning "make man

Air board may trim electric car mandate - Regulators could focus more on hybrid vehicles
SACRAMENTO – California’s air-quality regulators may wish to lay to rest the legend of who killed the electric car.But a proposal going before the Air Resources Board on Thursday fails to sway critics convinced that the state continues to retreat from its once-lofty goal of seeing thousands of electric cars on the roadways. “They’re backing down,” said Bill Hammons, president of the Electric Vehicle Association of San Diego. “It’s a total collapse.” A staff report recommends that the board greatly reduce the required number of purely electric vehicles that automakers offer for sale and instead focus on more readily available and less expensive hybrids that would still cut pollution dramatically. It’s a difference that would save the auto industry more than

New Energy Mandate: No Old Light Bulbs
I read in USA Today that the government might soon establish a policy under which stores would be forced to stop selling the old light bulbs in favor of more expensive, energy efficient ones. This would force us all to use them, but help eliminate a sizable chunk of wasted energy.Sounds like a good thing. I'll bet this (if it happens) will open the door to other mandates that will transform our society into a cleaner, more efficient one.

      Another Day, Another Court Mandate
TMZ reports today that Britney has had ALL of her visitation rights taken away from her for alledgedly not complying with court orders, including not providing the drug testers with her contact information so they could administer said tests. The order by L.A. County Commissioner Scott Gordon came after K-Fed’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, went to court yesterday for an emergency hearing. The order reads, “Petitioner’s (Britney’s) visitation with the minor children is suspended pending Petitioner’s compliance with the court orders.” Brit’s next shot at getting the kids is October 26, when she’s been ordered back to court. Do you really have to be a detective to find Britney Spears? I mean, I’m pretty sure the Hollywood Starline Tour drives right past her house. And if she’s not home, even I have a pretty good idea where Britney is throughout the course of the day. The paparazzi act like her own personal lo-jack device.

'Idol' Voters Have Spoken: No Mandate for Melinda
News Source : Washington PostNo, not Melinda. No, no, no, no, no.Melinda Doolittle, the most polished singer in the history of "American Idol" -- she effortlessly channeled Carmen McRae, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, just name your diva and stand back -- was voted off last night. That leaves Jordin Sparks, a big-voiced but inexperienced teenager from Arizona, and Blake Edwards, a hyperkinetic fashion victim who interrupts his performances with beat-box vocalese, to compete next week in the finals.Melinda's dismissal stunned even Jordin and Blake -- she was that much better. Melinda had made her living as a backup singer, which meant she had chops. Her command of breath, tone, her phrasing were those of a professional singer. Jordin and Blake, let's face it, probably couldn't spell vibrato, let alone modulate it.But her departure wasn't entirely unexpected. For all her talent and accomplishment, Melinda had little of the sparkle and fizz that people expect from a po

Vaccine Mandate - The Big Picture
Star Parker connects the dots to explain how mandatory vaccines are symptomatic of what is wrong with our health care system.  The problem, as I’ve written several times before, is the disconnect between care givers and patients when it comes to cost accounting. The current controversy surrounding state initiatives to mandate vaccination of preteen girls with the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine sheds light on what is wrong with our health-care system. The great economist Milton Friedman pointed out the problem. Noting that everything seems to get cheaper while health care keeps getting more expensive, Friedman explained that the problem is that the person buying health care is most often not who is paying for it. Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, left, speaks during a news conference, Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, in Austin, Texas. She asked that Texas Gov. Rick Perry rescind his executive order that requires all girls to be vaccinated for HPV before they enter the sixth grade.

      An implied mandate
Permit me a moment to count my chickens before they’re elected… The proposed Democratic legislative agenda is important. Making taxes more progressive, increasing the minimum wage, and policing Congress are all necessary and will do our country good. But perhaps the Democrats should consider being bolder. Inherent in a governing majority is a mandate to go beyond the constrains of campaign promises and infer the electorate’s desires. This year, Democrats are going to be elected on bread and butter issues at home and the Iraq war abroad. Is it possible for the Party to glean anything from these specific factors? I believe broadly that Democrats are going to be elected because people in districts all over the country feel fundamentally insecure. From that, the Democrats should feel confident in offering security-enhancing legislation. It has taken six years, but Americans are finally connecting their feelings of insecurity–both in their pocketbooks and i
