December 28th 2008 Today was our last full day in Manila. I may be seriously wrong but on my visits to Manila it has never struck me as a city to walk around, a city of interesting places. And again it’s poor transport choices do not make getting around easy. So, today again we all headed out to the malls, this time Glorietta, Landmark and Greenbelt a linked collection of massive malls
I'm not a mall person, never have been, never will be. Especially at Christmas. I hate the crowds, the bumping, the nudging, the rush from store to store. It is just not something that I can enjoy, even remotely. I do it though. I have to. My kids want to go and shop at the mall and I am their walking ATM so I go.This year I've noticed that I don't mind the mall as much, there is no bumping, no

Because of this blog and other projects I am working on— I don’t get out much these days. It’s not like I specifically look for them either. [...]
Shopping malls - something city dwellers can't live without. It's like a watering hole for buffaloes and hippos; it attracts all kinds of animals who either need the cooling rejuvenation of water or just simply to be part of the herd. You know how it is - you just need to be in one whether you really need to be or not.I found out that the world's top three largest malls, based on gross leasable a

So there's no time better than today! We'll head through three states on this journey. Which sounds like a much bigger deal than it is, to be honest. We'll set out from our home base in Western Pennsylvania, go straight through West Virginia (which, given the part we're going through, takes all of five minutes), and zoom clear into Ohio. This is the nifty bridge we have to go over to get to Ohio, from West Virginia. And don't worry, I wasn't trying to take photos while driving here. Last weekend, i.e. the 2 days before Christmas Eve, we took the children to the malls nearby for them to feel the X’mas mood.
In between The Curve and Ikano, we all like the Curve better. It is more beautiful and lots of things to see. With 2 snowman and a few deers, a stage inside a wooden house, and lots of beautifully decorated Christmas trees. My kids didn’t want to leave the place!
When we arrived at Ikano, my kids weren’t really interested at the stage deco, partly because it wasn’t happening there. Events only started at 12 noon, and all the booths were vacant. However, they enjoyed the train ride - very expensive RM5 per kid/person!!
The stage deco in Ikano is not very happening. There were 2 gingerbread men, but they looked so sad with downward lips.
My son is fond of the Gingerbread Man story, but didn’t like the deco. They have people dressing in these characters coming out to greet kids, but started quite late and we had to leave early

If possible, stay away from shopping malls. High-dollar shopping malls have expensive overhead and are designed to sell, sell, sell. Prices are generally higher and in most cases, people walk out with more than they anticipated buying. It is better to shop at stand-alone shops or on the Internet.
The FBI has released a report detailing the prospect that Al Qaeda may be plotting to strike shopping malls this holiday season. That’s taking the ‘War on Christmas’ to an entirely new level. Ho, ho, ho! Allahu Akbar!
From ABC News:
The FBI is warning that al Qaeda may be preparing a series of holiday attacks on U.S. shopping malls in Los Angeles and Chicago, according to an intelligence report distributed to law enforcement authorities across the country this morning. Click here for full text.
The alert said al Qaeda “hoped to disrupt the U.S. economy and has been planning the attack for the past two years.”
Law enforcement officials tell ABCNews.com that the FBI received the information in late September and declassified it yesterday for wide distribution.
The alert, like similar FBI and Department of Homeland Security terror alerts issued over the past five years at holiday times, raised questions about the credibility of the information.

The popularity of malls has attracted the attention of the hospitality sector as well. With the rising costs of real estate, hotels are now looking to rent space in malls and other commercial complexes. Accor Hotels and Ginger Hotels are in talks with mall developers to build Formulae 1 brand of budget hotels at the top floors of malls in tier I and tier II of cities. Ginger Hotel has signed contracts in Ludhiana, Amritsar, Mohali and Ahmedabad. Real estate biggies like Phoenix Mills and DLF, too, plan such hotels in various cities."This is a concept that hotels have been following worldwide and is just catching up in India." said Mr Shishir Shrivastava, CEO, Phoenix Mills. The cost factor also works well for the hotels. For instance, a 100 room stand alone Ginger hotel will cost the company (excluding the variable cost of the land) anywhere between Rs 13-15 crore that is 30% more than what it would cost it over a mall. While the hotel sits on the top floor, the lower floors

A mall and multiplex wave is set to sweep across Chennai, with over 20 malls planned in the next three years. The city, where India’s first mall, Spencer Plaza, was set up in 1975, is expected to absorb over Rs 3,000 crore in the coming years. Realty majors such as Prestige Group, Shriram Properties and DLF are in the forefront of mall development in the city and beyond. Bangalore-based Prestige is drawing up plans for a second Forum mall in the city’s artery, Mount Road, while completing the first Rs 350-crore Forum mall at Vadapalani in Chennai, in collaboration with Vijaya Group. The Vadapalani mall, spread over 17 lakh square feet, will feature a seven-screen multiplex, over 100 shops, two departmental stores, a 1,40,000 square feet hypermarket. The mall is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2010. August 31, 2007 Source: Business Standard
Malls in Bangalore, Mumbai and Ahmedabad have gone wi-fi to ensure students and executives spend more time in the mall. More the time spent, more the purchase.
Inorbit Mall and Infinity Mall in Mumbai; Forum mall in Bangalore; Iscon Mega Mall, Himalaya Mall, Gallops have taken the wi-fi plunge already and many more are in queue.
Considering the infrastructure cost to wi-fi enable a mall may range from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 1,00,000, it is a costly affair but for now the mall owners are planning to bear it and may be later on charge for the usage.

With the rapid development, there is no empty space anywhere in my city. Builders have erected huge shopping complexes and multiplexes in every nook & corner. This is what I dread the most! As new malls started arising out of the blue in the city, certainly I was excited to visit the brand new one near my house. With a million dollars in my pocket (kidding, of course, actually with a hole in my pocket) I set off with much thrill and enthusiasm and quickly reached my destination. Wow! such a huge building. Standing tall and majestic in the scorching heat of the sun, it did look grand. Certainly impressed, I entered the mall. All around the place were…… of course….. people! Thousands or may be……. millions! At first I was dumbstruck thinking that the whole of the city’s population was present there. I was truly amazed. Anyways, I had to continue, so I decided to enter the first shop. My wicked mind chuckled at the thought of how the shopkeeper would react when
Beijing - For a closer look at China's sizzling economy, walk the marble floors of Beijing's latest luxury mall. From its Japanese-style food court selling $4 chocolate éclairs to its glittering floors of branded international fashion, Shin Kong Place is a palace of conspicuous consumption. Since 2002, China has built hundreds of malls in towns and cities, each trying to get a slice of a retail pie worth $800 billion last year. Captivated by the promise of a vast consumer class itching to spend, foreign brands have jostled for space at the table only to find a scarcity of customers. As a result, retail vacancy rates in Beijing are currently 8 percent and rising as more malls enter a crowded market.
Travel companies are smitten by the retail bug. Mumbai-based travel firm TravelPort will be opening 45 retail outlets in malls by March 2008. It has tied up with the Delhi-based Salasar Retail to open travel terminals in Salasar stores. Branded as TravelPort@Salasar, these terminals will provide travel products such as air tickets, hotel packages and cruise packages. The company will also be tying up with Fun Republic and the New Delhi-based Sun City. It is in talks with players like Ansals and DLF. TravelPort is looking at an investment of Rs 3-lakh per outlet. The company has projected a turnover of Rs 100 crore by the end of this fiscal.

My other blog about technology is doing great and I have monetized it strictly with Chitika. I do have Google Adsense within the post. But looking at some stats today I have more clicks everyday with Chitika than with Google Adsense. I think there are several reasons for this. But let’s talk about what Chitika is.
Chitika provides bloggers the opportunity to harness their independent original content and opinions to monetize the traffic to their site. Offers retailers a new channel to merchandise their products, and gives consumers better access to a broader base of independent expert advice from the blogger community.
Founded in 2003, Chitika has built a network of more than 12,000 participating blogs and websites, and is adding new members daily. Chitika is the only blogger-driven merchandising/shopping network connecting online consumers directly with the products that are relevant to them. I recalled visiting a shopping mall in Australia many years ago and had an interesting experience of having to walk through metal detectors as there had been several bomb threats and other terrorists scares at that time. Though I expect to see those metal detectors which are likened to X-ray and Gamma-ray screening in night entertainment places, schools, government agencies or embassies, or airports, I believe they were necessary to control certain safety situations. Rapiscan Systems were the people who designed, manufactured these walk-throughs and hand held metal detectors you noticed from time to time and it looked this was a specialized industry. Usually, I wouldn’t bother about things like these but it was just one of rare occasions.
Inorbit Malls (India) Pvt. Ltd, owned by property developer K. Raheja, is planning to introduce a multitude of luxury malls and discount malls. The company is also considering coming up with two more formats, which could include the Inorbit name and a new sub brand name.
The plan is under development stage and its details are in the drawing board stage. The company is driving all its efforts to take up this venture as soon as possible. However, the kinds of investment and locations for the malls have not been decided yet.
The places which they have in view are large metros including New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Contrary to this, the discount malls will come up in tier-II cities.
The spectrum of K Raheja’s retail ventures includes Shoppers’ Stop Ltd, the listed department store chain with a number of speciality store chains, and HyperCity Retail (India) Pvt. Ltd, a hypermarket.
Factory outlets are gaining in popularity everywhere especially the United States. The company is tr
We all love it, the outlet mall. Places where we go get great bargains. But the question is though, are they really a bargain? The answer is: maybe. There is no disputing that a true factory outlet- a store operated directly by a manufacturer is - often a place where savvy consumers can obtain great bargains. However, many manufacturers don't want to undercut the stores that sell the bulk of their products. That explains why sometimes the outlet prices might be higher than your local discount store.
How can you make sure that the price in outlet store is the lowest? If you know that product can't be find anywhere else or has very little competition, then you know you are getting a good deal. If you can find the same product in discount stores or even online, chances are the outlet will not have a better deal. Nowadays online outlets are able to provide cheaper price than some of the outlet stores. The reason for that is they don't have any store operating expenses. They don't hav
Outlets are sites where manufactures sell their goods directly to the public. Supposedly, shoppers save by cutting out the middle man. Many times outlet stores cut prices even more by offering goods that are out of style or slightly damaged (stuff that wouldn't make it in a normal department store). As a special service to humanity, Recueilli's Reporters braved a day at an outlet mall to answer the age old question: Are they worth it?A day at an outlet mall really depends on who you are and what you have in your wallet. For example, shopaholics might want to leave their plastic at home. LeBron James doesn't even need a wallet. And if your great-grandma would just carry a credit card you would jump for joy. So, after driving for an hour, our reporters entered the mall carrying a single $100 bill. In less than 10 minutes, that bill was broken for a few shirts over 50% off. Overall our crew spent $80 on shoes, clothes, food, and cleaner. Add a generous $8 for gas and estimated
Specialty Malls seem to be the new retail buzzword which is likely to dominate the Indian retail market now onwards. With a huge influx of sparkling malls with finely tuned marketing strategies mushrooming in cyber cities like Gurgaon and Noida, the mall mania has certainly gripped every shopping enthusiast.
With the competition growing fiercer in Indian retail sector, specialty malls are resetting the trends and transforming the fundamental activity of shopping into a lifestyle statement.
Most of the world class brands have now established their presence in India. Malls in Gurgaon have always been looked upon as taking a new high. However, the growing trend is apparently visible everywhere.
Also known as Theme Malls, Specialty Malls are believed to be more popular than the simple shopping malls. The first specialty mall was the Gold Souk in Gurgaon. Dedicated entirely to the Jewellery collection, the mall houses some of the big brands in the Jewellery business in India as well as abro
According to real estate developer Nakheel, the mega malls at Dubai is almost nearing capacity and there is an increased need for diversity in shopping concepts. The CEO of Nakheel Retail, David Thurling, who is also behind the development of projects such as the Ibn Battuta Mall, is of the opinion that it is high time the local developers focused on new shopping concepts such as town center style shopping zones, factory outlets, and retail outlets and themed malls that link to main transport hubs. Even retail zones that are linked to metro stations, malls with focus on entertainment zones or shopping centers with a character or historical period theme are the other options that could be considered. While speaking to delegates at the Dubai Retail City trade show, he said "The challenge for us in the industry is to think outside the square and to look at mall design in a different way for it to be competitive and offer something new in the market."He added, that from a Nakheel point of vi

This year will see international luxury brands like Gucci, Armani, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana etc. set shop in India, inside malls that will be exclusively catering to upscale, premium lifestyle brands. With 4-5 luxury malls coming up in India, a deluge of international lifestyle brands is set to descend upon the country this year. According to a recent survey, high net worth individual households in India stand at 1.6 million, growing at around 14-15% annually. And with the luxury market pegged at Rs. 64,000 crores, the going is only getting better. There are at least 5-7 urban micro markets in India for luxury retail, namely, South Mumbai, North Mumbai, South Delhi, Central/South Western Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore, and possibly one in Punjab (Ludhiana or Chandigarh). Cities like Mumbai and Delhi can absorb multiple centers for luxury retail, in order for the brands to be conveniently accessible to the large expanse of the populace. In another 4-6 years, Bangalore and Chennai are

Power supply to plush shopping malls, stadium floodlights and city hoardings, has become dearer as the Maharashtra Electricity regulatory Commission (MERC) has proposed a steep tariff hike. MERC in its order on the annual revenue requirement (ARR) and tariff revision proposal, filed by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) undertaking has said that the per unit tariff for shopping malls with more than 1,000 kwh consumption in the BEST jurisdiction would be Rs. 9.97 per unit, for advertisements and hoardings Rs. 14.57 per unit, for street-lights Rs. 6.57 per unit. MERC has ensured that the smaller consumers in the residential, commercial and industrial category will not have to face a tariff shock.
