Drug's efficacy for treating depression ‘exciting’
BRUCE JANCIN VIENNA - Mecamylamine, an old, rarely prescribed, truly obscure antihypertensive agent, may be favorably reincarnated as an antidepressant with a completely novel mechanism of action-and vastly greater potential use. The drug displayed favorable safety and efficacy as augmentation therapy in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who were nonresponders to citalopram (Celexa) monotherapy, Dr Geoffrey C. Dunbar reported at the annual congress of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology. More... © 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Mitt Romney is ‘a phony’ and ‘must be stopped!’
In unusually stark language, the newspaper in New Hampshire’s capital calls former Massachusetts Gov. Ashlee Simpson: ‘Outta My Head’ Video
Ashlee Simpson’s new music video for “Outta My Head” came out yesterday, and I have to say. I sort of like it! I’m not saying the song is fabulous by any stretch of the imagination (it kind of makes me want to jazzercise), though I do have a sneaking suspicion it is the type of song that’ll grow on you, and before you know it you’re singing “outta my, outta my head…” Anyway, the song is debatable, but the music video is fun especially considering Ashlee’s obvious Rubix Cube lap dancing talents, and who ever styled the video is amazing. Fish ‘n Flush - not just another fish story!
If you’re thinking your chances of finding that perfectly unique, even bizarre, Christmas gift for that eccentric person on your list have gone down the drain, don’t give up yet! The Fish ‘n Flush is certainly in the bizarre category and could be what you’re looking for. It’s a toilet with a 2.2 gallon aquarium that fits around the tank reservoir. The aquarium tank has its own filter and can be used for fish, reptiles, or simply decorated for the season. Fish ‘n Flush is a patented, two-piece aquarium toilet tank, designed by AquaOne Technologies, Inc., an innovator of water-management systems. Fish ‘n Flush fits most two-piece toilets and turns the bathroom into the center of attention with its unique design of an aquarium that wraps itself around a clear inner tank. I expect I’ll see this someday soon on HGTV’s What’s with That House, but until then I think I’ll just go over to my brother’s house when I need an

      Stay off ‘our house’, Google
“Those people are not going to be allowed to take food off our plate, because that is what they are intending to do.” Impassioned words, coming from the chief operating officer of Microsoft, Kevin Turner, at a company conference. Google has been wading into the world of enterprise search with its Google Search Appliance, which sells for around $2,500 pop. The software allows company employees to search through platforms like intranets, content management systems and file servers. But Turner, who joined Microsoft from Wal-Mart Stores 11 months ago, was adamant that corporate search is “our house.” “Enterprise search is our business, it’s our house and Google is not going to take that business,” he told 7,000 delegates in Boston.

Fun Activity - ‘Cooking’ for kids
Ian’s school has a couple of ‘cooking classes’ during the holiday program. He ‘cooked’ pan cake and cookies in the last two weeks. Well, actually most of the time he observed and eat only. But he loves those classes. And I remember reading an article Kids Activity - Playing with food, from mumsgather, that she made egg sandwich with the kids. I thought it was fun, and I did the same last weekend (Sunday). I tried to make it a breakfast. After I woke up at 7am, I put 3 eggs to boil, then bathed the two kids. After bathing and brushing their teeth, I cooled down the eggs, and asked Ian to smash and peel off the eggs. He loved that, but lazy - only willing to do 1 egg, the rest I have to do. I asked him to smash the eggs after demonstrating. Guess what? He started eating the eggs little by little. Little rat! I had to take over to smash them, and mixed with mayonnaise. After spreading the mixture onto breads, I took out the cookie mold/shaper, ask

Mercedes GLK Undisguised on the Set of ‘Sex and the City’
Caught on the set of American cable television show "Sex and the City", the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK Class is wearing no camouflage revealing all of the design details. As a bonus, we also get a glimpse of the beautiful Kim Cattrall, one of the four main characters of the romantic comedy. These photos were shot last Sunday on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills during the filming of the movie-version. At first sight the new GLK looks like a disguised GL, but in reality this prototype is considerably smaller than Mercedes’ full-size sport-ute. Translated, the name GLK basically means “short version of GL” as K is a diminutive of the German “kurz,” meaning short. The GLK is using technical components from the all-new Mercedes C-class, and it will keep very close in design to the GL-Class. The GLK will debut as a 2009 model at the Frankfurt auto show in Geneva 2008. Power is expected to come from a 3.5-liter V6 with Mercedes 4Matic all-wheel-drive standard. All ve

‘Consumption’ carbon footprints are useful but risk double counting
Measuring carbon footprints is an activity renowned for its double-counting pitfalls. Dieter Helm's recent report (pdf) into Britain's "consumption' emissions falls into one. The World Resource Institute's GHG Protocol, the benchmark methodology for calculating corporate emissions, divides footprints into three scopes: 1) direct (for example emissions from a company's vehicle fleet or factories), 2) indirect emissions associated with energy purchased from third parties and 3) all other emissions, such as emissions in the supply chain or from how customers use products. Installations in the EU ETS only have regulatory exposure to their direct (scope 1) emissions, because any indirect emissions in the other two scopes are direct emissions for another party. Including them would be double counting. The higher emissions identified in the study are, in effect, Britain's scope 3 emissions. The British government does not directly control them. Some companies measure their scop

      ‘Boro Preview
This afternoon’s game at the Riverside is the last of three consecutive Premier League games. No doubt Middlesbrough will try to play with the same physical intensity that Newcastle and Villa did in recent days. Whereas both of those had the players to carry it off, I am not convinced ‘Boro do. They lack the guile in midfield of previous seasons and seem to be in the relegation fight for the long haul. That is not to underestimate them. When they have been in the same position in the past, they have still managed to pull out results against one or two of the top teams. However, anything less than three points will be disappointing in the context of current league positions. Arsene has said that there will be one or two changes from the middle of the week, based on how many consecutive games the players have been involved in. Those changes, I think, will be confined to the midfield and attack. With Steaua in the week being a dead rubber, there is time to give the defence its

SCOTX-8: Yanex Decries Signature Requiement, Says Required Show Of Support Is ‘Undemocratic’
Every Primary season, some candidate will end up saying something truly and amazingly stunning before the filing deadline even passes that will come back to haunt their campaign. For Linda Yanez, seeking Place 8 on the Texas Supreme Court, her episode came this week in the Rio Grande Guardian: Is this undemocratic? In order to file to run for Texas Supreme Court, a candidate needs to secure the signatures of nearly 800 Texas voters from all 14 appellate court districts across the state. 13th Court of Appeals Justice Linda Yañez thinks it is, even though she is the first to collect the required signatures and the first Democrat to file the official papers for candidacy to the state’s highest court. “When I ran for the Supreme Court in 2002 we never had to collect all these signatures. It’s a new thing,” Yañez told the Guardian, in a telephone interview from El Paso. “Now, we have to collect around 800 signatures and pay the $3,700 fee in order to run. It’s an unbelievable

      Salad in the ‘hood
(Hi all, still recovering; still can’t taste anything. Check out a recent salad that made me smile! It’s particularly beautiful to look at what with our second snowfall in three days descending on us. Enjoy!) I often have, quite to my delight, an overwhelming and urgent need to eat just vegetables, or mostly vegetables; note that it is something I enjoy, and not simply an excuse to torture my little carnivore. I have talked about it before, this craving I have. One day it came on in force; likely it was the Thai overload I had recently. I had dinner out with a friend and then brought home the leftovers which, of course, became the next days lunch. There was a lot of great rice, but pretty soon my body was waving the white flag and marching for something more wholesome, and possibly, much more healthy. I had also come home from work smack in the midst of the dinner hour and there was no plan. Since the fridge was full of leftovers, I declared it was ‘everyone fo

What happens on ‘YY Weekend’, stays on ‘YY Weekend’…
…mainly because although I took the camera, there wasn’t much to photograph. The weather was a bit wet for most of the weekend, so a lot of our time was spent indoors in the loungeroom (or at McDonald’s). Much FIFA was played, much iPod listened to, and much (?) card games were played. We ate, drank, and relaxed, and as usual, I’ve come home from a holiday needing to sleep in and spend some time relaxing afterwards (I’m such a wuss). The house was fantastic (although a bit leaky in such a heavy downpour), and we were very fortunate to have access to it. We sampled the Big Macs of various suburbs across the Central Coast, and managed to look / sound / feel like idiots in various other social settings. Thanks especially to the corner shop lady who charged us about $8 for a loaf of bread and 2 litres of milk. Chris - can we start a digital countdown to next year’s event now?

      ‘Passive Midfield’ Causes Tactical Defeat
In the ‘invincible season’, we played a team with two destructive centre midfielders with two unconventional wingers, attacking the box, and switching positions with Henry, with the central focus, arguably the greatest Dutchman of this era,  with his vision, technique and awareness providing elegance to the intelligent runs of Pires and Ljungberg. In contrast, that central attacking focus has changed, with Fabregas adopting a deeper role in this new, more continental team. With more technical players used in the elusive Hleb and the (ever so slightly) Rosicky, the speed on the counter-attack is not what it once used to be. Until this season that is. As Vieira used to press and harass opponents high up the pitch, leading his fellow players in forcing the opposition into making a mistake, now it is Flamini who while not as physically intimidating, makes this deficiency up through his unlimited stamina, and this new-found aggression allows us to exploit any spa

‘Man in the browser’ is new threat to Online Banking
November 27, 2007 (Computerworld UK) — Criminals infecting PCs with malware that is only triggered when they access their bank accounts are the latest threat to online banking, according to security software supplier F-Secure. Perpetrators act as a ‘man in the browser‘ by intercepting HTML code in the Web browser. As bank security measures curb more traditional threats such as keystroke logging, phishing and pharming, F-Secure warned, the ‘man in the browser’ attack will increase. Once a user’s PC is infected, the malicious code is only triggered when the user visits an online bank. The ‘man in the browser’ attack then retrieves information, such as logins and passwords, entered on a legitimate bank site. This personal data is sent directly to an FTP site to be stored, where it is sold to the highest bidder. My precious ‘me’ time
Ever since Ian was born, I rarely have time for myself. Every day, my time is split into 2 –> day time is for my employer, night time is for my kids. They sleep at 8:30pm, so I am expected to sleep at 8:30pm. We wake up at 7am, and then we leave the house - they go to MIL’s house, I go to the office. Last Friday and Monday I took leave, wanted to have time for myself. I used to try this on my past birthdays as much as possible. This year, as birthday fell on Sunday, I had to delay my ‘me time’. Friday, I went to the saloon to perm my hair. I guess I must be looking awful after being a mom. I wanted a make over. Spent a solid 6-hour time in the saloon. This perm is very funny. They curled my hair with rods, and then connected the rods on a machine which heats up the rods. I looked like an alien with a lot of tentacles. The result was good. I’m not going to show here, but so far all positive remarks. (more…)

F1: Coulthard says ‘I’ll definitely be driving for Red Bull’
David Coulthard has moved to squash rumours that he will be shunted off to Red Bull’s B-team next year, or even lose his drive altogether, in order to make way for homeless double world champion Fernando Alonso. And the Scot is emphatic, saying: “I cannot see Fernando Alonso joining Red Bull in 2008, and I am 100 per cent certain that I will be racing for them next year.” In the absence of hard facts about next year’s finalised driver line-up the F1 rumour mill has gone wild, linking Alonso with Renault, Red Bull and outside bet Toyota. He was thought to be interested in a one-year contract to tide him over until a seat opened up at Ferrari - something that Renault, also beleaguered by spy allegations, would not be prepared to offer. But, writing in his latest column for the ITV F1 website, DC squashes that idea flat. Children - From the ‘Prophet’
“Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness; For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.”   Author - Kahlil Gibran

ANN: ‘Vampire Knight’ to be animated… not Crimson Hero
Anime News Network has reported on the next shojo manga to be made into an anime: Vampire Knight. WHY couldn’t it have been Crimson Hero? Yeah, Vampire Knight’s popular among shojo fangirls, but CH is popular with non-drooly girls. Plus CH has so much more depth; I’ve only read two volumes of Vampire Knight (1 and [...]

There’s nothing like a city gent in a ‘Double Cuff and Cutaway’?
The classic cutaway collar and double cuff, or French cuff as it is oft known, exude a certain style or so some would say. However, on the other side of the Atlantic they can be seen as somewhat pretentious. So which is it? The height of male chic or part of a pompous individual’s wardrobe? The double cuff is a shirt cuff on a dress or work shirt which has been folded back and is then closed with either silk knots (or as they are also known monkeys fists) or cuff links rather than buttons. The so called monkey fists are intricate silken knots which act in much the same way as cufflinks and have now become very fashionable. The double cuff certainly does seem to be more popular in Europe than in North America where they are sometimes seen as overly formal. The cutaway collar tends to be used with fashionably larger tie knots. It looks like a collar that has had too much material cut off it, but like the double cuff I believe it adds a certain, ‘je ne sais qoui’ to a g

      Utilizing ‘House’ Speakers
One thing thats sort of annoying about your standard karaoke set up, is the fact that all the sound is coming from one single source…. YOUR main speakers. It’s bad enough that the people in the front row get stuck with an onslaught of off-key country tunes. Now you’re subjecting them to high-volume drunken rambling. [...]

Travelers Not ‘Giving Thanks’ to Mother Nature
A strong cold that stretches from Texas through the Ohio Valley and Lake Erie into Northern New York along with an associated low pressure system located in Indiana as of 5pm EST on Wednesday will continue to cause travel problems and weather woes for the rest of the day and into the Thanksgiving Holiday… Severe weather is developing along the frontal boundary from Eastern Texas, through central Arkansas, and into extreme western Kentucky and more is likely tonight into the south as the front continues to push south and east. The Storm Prediction Center has issued severe thunderstorm and tornado watch boxes for the areas mentioned above. Out ahead of this front temperatures are in the 80s, 70s and 60s, but behind the front temperatures drop nearly 20 to 30 degrees into the 40s and 30s. This significant drop in temperatures is causing rain to change over to snow. Heavy snow, falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, is occurring over Iowa this afternoon and evening. This will c

Tree man ‘who grew roots’ may be cured
home village south of the capital Jakarta claims to have identified his condition, and proposed a treatment that could transform his life. After testing samples of the lesions and Dede’s blood, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland concluded that his affliction is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers. Dede’s problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system, meaning his body is unable to contain the warts. The virus was therefore able to “hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells”, ordering them to produce massive amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as “cutaneous horns” on his hands and feet. Dede’s counts of a key type of white blood cell are so low that Dr Gaspari initially suspected he may have the Aids virus. But tests showed he did not, and it became clear that Dede’s immune condition was something far rarer

Champ Car: ‘Speedy Dan’ promotes road safety
In the US, the holiday season starts with Thanksgiving weekend - and Champ Car’s resident Brits are getting into the spirit with a road safety campaign which aims to cut road deaths during the festive period. Katherine Legge and Dan Clarke, both based in the Midwestern city of Indianapolis, have visited Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Indiana, along with colleagues Simon Pagenaud and Will Power to encourage students to practise ‘hands on the wheel’ driving. The campaign is designed to encourage drivers to to stay 100 per cent focused while behind the wheel after recent statistics show that 80 per cent of all crashes and 65 per cent of near-crashes in the US are caused by distracted drivers. At this time of year people are travelling across the country to spend Thanksgiving with their families, so a safety reminder is particularly apt. Other unsafe behaviour that the campaign hopes to target includes text messaging while driving, street racing and failur

Keira Knightley on the set of her new movie ‘The Duchess’
Here are some new pictures (taken on November 15) of Keira Knightley on the set of her new movie “The Duchess“. In this film, Keira plays 18th Century aristocrat Georgiana Cavendish, an ancestor of Princess Diana. It is rumored that Keira acted like a diva and infuriated the cast and crew of the film by failing to get a scene right, despite 17 takes. The British beauty, who recently branded herself a “moody b*****d, ” left ‘The Duchess’ cast and crew livid by spending the time between her failed efforts sulking. “She was filming a very simple two-line scene, but she just couldn’t get it right and the director finally gave up in despair, ” the Daily Mail quoted a source, as saying. The scene involved her walking down some stairs and sitting with another character to whom Keira had to whisper something, down a drink and leave, but she just couldn’t get it. The source revealed that she struggled to express the conspiracy between the two tha

F1: Hamilton says ‘I’ll beat Kimi on track next year’
Lewis Hamilton has said that he believes Kimi Raikkonen deserves his 2007 World Championship title and says he looks forward to beating him on the track in future. His words come after the result of a hearing into claims by his teams that fuel irregularites by BMW Sauber and Williams at the Brazilian Grand Prix cost him points that would have secured him the championship. F1’s International Court of Appeal ruled McLaren’s appeal inadmissible after two days of deliberations. The most likely grounds for this are an assertion by the teams that McLaren was not a sufficiently interested party and therefore had no right to bring the action. But the exact grounds are not yet public since the FIA has said media organisations will have to apply to them to read the full ruling. In a press release issued by McLaren Mercedes shortly after the decision was made public he said: “As I have said all along, Kimi deserved to win the 2007 World Drivers’ Championship, and neither I n

Chet Edwards On Immigration & The ‘08 Elections
I just came across this snippet from the LA Times: “If Democrats turn a blind eye to the public concerns about immigration, it would be a mistake,” said Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Texas), who won reelection last year in his conservative district by taking a hard line against illegal immigration while backing what he said were “practical” ideas for dealing with the nation’s estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. “If Democrats are seen as strongly supporting the protection of our borders and not supporting a vast array of welfare benefits for people here illegally, and combine that with a responsible approach toward earned citizenship for those who have been in our country for a number of years, then it can be a winning issue for Democrats.” Interesting quotes. Lucio Receives ‘Rural Partner Of The Year’ Award From ARCIT
State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville), has been awared the Texas Senate Rural Partner of the Year Award from the Association of Rural Communities in Texas. More info from the press release sent out by Sen. Lucio’s office is below: Most notably, he authored Senate Bill 1485, which advocated for rural communities through establishing a rural development fund. While the bill sailed through the Senate, it ran out of time in the House and did not pass. “I am very honored by this recognition,” said Sen. Lucio. “In return, I commend ARCIT for the support they offered during the legislative session and for all the work they do. Our rural communities cannot flourish unless we fund programs that help them develop economic activity, and I will continue to champion that cause.” The intent of SB 1485 was to establish the Texas Rural Development Fund to enhance the state’s current rural-focused activities by using best practices and targeted activities,

Ashley Jensen blasts ‘irresponsible’ skinny celebrities
Ugly Betty actress Ashley Jensen has blasted skinny Hollywood stars for their constant dieting. She thinks their “irresponsible” behavior sets a bad example to young fans and feels angered by fellow celebrities who cut down on food so that they look slimmer on screen. Speaking at Cosmopolitan’s Ultimate Women of the Year Awards in London, the 38-year-old actress says she prides herself on her full and healthy appetite: “I like my food and wine too much to diet all the time. I don’t think it’s a particularly good thing starving yourself to look thin for the cameras anyway. I don’t think it’s very responsible. I know a lot of people do it, but what message is that giving out to people? It’s a world of extremes out there, but I’m one of those people who believes in ‘everything in moderation’. I’m not going to change that belief.” [Source]

F1: Renault ‘invited McLaren to inspect car and computers’
The Renault F1 team has admitted that it possessed confidential information belonging to McLaren, and that the data made it onto its computer systems - but has denied that it was misused in any way. It says that McLaren has been invited to send independent experts to inspect its car designs and computers so its competitor can be reassured that confidential technical drawings removed by a former employer have not been exploited. In a statement released today the team stressed that every effort had been made to remove all traces of the information from its systems. It also explained how engineer Phil Mackereth, the former McLaren engineer at the centre of the row, was suspended from the team on September 6. The team has been summoned to explain its actions at a meeting of the World Motorsport Council to be held on December 6. Earlier this year McLaren was fined nearly £50 million and docked all its constructors’ points after emails between its drivers were held to have proved th
