By Steven RhodesThe Boston Red Sox, in trying to keep their core players together, have reached a preliminary agreement on a 3-year, $37.5 million contract with third baseman Mike Lowell, as reported by the Associated Press and verified by two sources familiar with the negotiations who - you guessed it - requested anonymity as the deal has not been finalized yet. While the basic outline of the deal is there, there are some minor issues to be ironed out and as of this writing, there's no letter of agreement between the Red Sox and Lowell's agents. As expected, team spokesman John Blake declined to comment. Lowell, who made $9 million last season, was initially seeking four guaranteed years and could have possibly gotten that elsewhere.
