About a week ago I was sitting at home watching one of my favorite afternoon shows, Oprah, when I noticed she was doing a special with Jenny McCarthy on Autism and the battle she had went through with her son. She has just written a book called “Louder Than Words: A Mother’s Journey in Healing Autism“, which I will be purchasing as soon as I can remember to stop at the book store and get it (the lack of sleep due to my newborn).
Anyways, I learned a lot about autism by watching this show and I always thought autism was something children where born with, which in some cases they are. I figured that doctors diagnosed it when a child was a newborn, but in Jenny’s case her son was diagnosed at a much later age and was perfectly fine his first couple of years of life. So yesterday I was watching Oprah and Jenny McCarthy was the guest. She was talking about autism and her new book, Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism. Apparently at 2 1/2 her son, Evan, started having seizures and was diagnosed with autism. She believes the autism was caused by the MMR shot he received. This is a common belief. Autism is usually diagnosed around the same time the MMR shot is given. It is a pretty controversial topic. One thing is for sure. Autism is on the rise. 1 in 100 children are affected by it. I invited two friends from work to our wedding and they are both coming! A happy camper I am! Dutchie finally met one of them today as we shopped around Hilversum for the afternoon and grabbed lunch together. It was actually a really nice afternoon until the wind picked up. the other night, when i was watching some drivel on the box, the ads came on and a minor irritation occured when i automatically reached down for the remote control to hit the “mute” button and found it wasnae where i usually leave it.
it occurred to me that for months now i’ve been instinctively muting the TV as soon as any channel i’m watching goes into a commercial break.
you see, the thing is that, not only are adverts an intrusive annoyance at the best of times but, as any fule kno’ the most irritating thing is that the adverts are that much LOUDER than the programmes they interrupt.
now by law, advertisers are not allowed to boost the volume above the level of the surrounding programs, but you, me and the gatepost all know that they do it. it’s actually quite a basic studio technique to “compress” the audio signal, so that whilst the peak volume remains the same, the overall levels are boosted and everything sounds LOUDER.
