View More Works by This Master Presented under the title of “A Union of Hemp Cloth, Mother of Pearl and Lacquer,” this traditional Najeon Chilgi comb box is the latest masterpiece by Song Bang-ung, Master Craftsman of Mother-of-Pearl Inlaying. Here the artist used a range of original techniques in which hemp cloth is laid upon the “skeleton” of the box before repeated applying of natural lacquer, until the fine mesh of the fabric is beautifully displayed on the surfaces. The inlaid mother of pearl designs edged with fine copper braids, following the Goryeo Dynasty’s unique “copper braids inlaying technique,” create this exquisite comb box’s elegant beauty through the wonderful harmony of colors of copper and mother of pearl.

My mom let me know of the passing of my Great-aunt (?) Florence yesterday. She was 102, and unlike many centogenarians, she had her faculties (i.e. she knew people and knew where/who she was). She succumbed after a battle with the nasty Stephen King's "The Stand" Flu that's been going around these here parts. One hundred and two, y'all.Again, I don't want to get to be that old. That's why I eat so lousy...it's really a preventative measure. I never was that close to Aunt Florence, really. Even though she was married for the vast majority of time I remember her (her 2nd husband Al died in 1990), she always seemed like the quintessential "old maid aunt". I liked her OK, but I was forever doomed to not be the type of person she seemed to favor. Not sure why, other than she had ideas of how

In cell banks around the world, human cells are kept in a state of near immortality. The environments in which these cells exist are at a relative constant of temperature, pressure and a steady supply of nutrients. These cells have an average replication rate of once every three weeks. They have a "life expectancy" of 10,000 replications. Now do the math: 3 weeks X 10,000 = 30,000 weeks = 576 yearsYet, we are told that our life expectancy is only 80-100 years.A bit of a contradiction here, or its it?We do not live in such perfectly controlled environments. Our bodies operate at a range of temperatures that can vary significantly from day to day, activity to activity, mood to mood.So where the perfect cells are kept in a kind of unchanging stillness, our lives and our bodies are changing and reacting moment by moment. While we cannot establish a constant state in all our cells, we can reduce the thermodynamic variation to a significant degree and benefit in a healthier and longer life.To
The herbal extract of a yellow-flowered mountain plant indigenous to the Arctic regions of Europe and Asia increased the lifespan of fruit fly populations, according to a University of California, Irvine study.
Flies that ate a diet rich with Rhodiola rosea, an herbal supplement long used for its purported stress-relief effects, lived on an average of 10 percent longer than fly groups that didn’t eat the herb. Study results appear in the online version of Rejuvenation Research.
“Although this study does not present clinical evidence that Rhodiola can extend human life, the finding that it does extend the lifespan of a model organism, combined with its known health benefits in humans, make this herb a promising candidate for further anti-aging research,” said Mahtab Jafari, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences and study leader. “Our results reveal that Rhodiola is worthy of continued study, and we are now investigating why this herb works to increase lifespan.&
British scientists have demonstrated that mice lacking the insulin receptor substrate are more resistant to aging than normal mice.University College London researchers said the finding adds to a growing body of work showing the importance of insulin signaling pathways as an aging mechanism in mammals, and potentially humans.Sources:UPI.com October 23, 2007
This is longevity buns. I used to eat longevity buns whenever my great grandparents celebrate their birthdays. After my great grandparents died several years ago, I had not eaten longevity buns anymore. Lately, I saw Shop and Save selling Longevity Buns and I bought them. That day, I steamed them and ate it with the family. They were so soft and nice. The filling is lotus paste. When hot, they were so soft, a bite at it, the filling oozes out, so nice and tasty.
I kept two pieces for Clara to eat when she came back from school. I steamed it again, to make it hot. The Longevity buns turned hard when it became cold. The way she ate was similar to me when I was a kid. She would peel off the pink skin of the longevity buns and ate the skin up first. Next she nibbled up the white bun.
I used to see longevity buns in confectionary shops. It is a rare sight now. They used to be bigger too, double the size of what I had eaten the other day. But big or small, the taste is m

Remember when we all thought George Blanda was the same as Bob Hope — the oldest person doing what he once did best? Well Vincent Frank Testaverde, the pride of Sewanhaka High, is not that far behind. Old George was 48, Vinny is about to be 44, and last week he got off his couch in Long Island and led the Carolina Panthers to victory. Teammates hoist Vinny after the old timer carries the Panthers to victory. (AP) It’s stunning. He’s supposed to be one of those more…

My late grandfather told me that people during their time were very poor. They can only have chicken during Chinese New Year, if they can afford it and they look forward to each birthdays because then they will be given an hard-boiled egg (shells dyed red) all to themselves. And if they are lucky, there will be a bowl of Longevity Noodles (长寿面) aka Rice Wheat Noodles (面线) to go with it. They were not suppose to cut or bite the noodles to shorten it because the noodles symbolise longevity. You wouldn't have to shorten your life would you?Nowadays, people no longer have that for birthday. Perhaps some may not even know the existence of this simple meal. They may not even want to have this for their birthday when they can afford any other food they like. But for me and my husband, it's like a tradition. We don't have rich, modernised (read: no cakes) parents. Both our mothers cooked us Longevity Noodles during our birthdays but of course there were chicken, eggs and stuff lik
A landmark review of current research, published in the journal Experimental Gerontology, indicates that calorie-restricted diets are not the key to extreme long life; instead, the key is avoiding age-related insulin resistance.Increased insulin resistance is one of the primary causes of the slow health decline associated with aging. However, those who remain healthy and active past the age of 100, a group known as "Healthy Centenarians", maintain normal insulin function throughout their long lives. Not only does their insulin continue to work to affect their blood glucose levels, but it also continues to function on their fatty tissues, resulting in lower triglyceride levels and higher levels of leptin, the hormone that regulates body weight and food intake. Leptin is very powerfully associated with both obesity and aging. The lack of insulin resistance in these healthy 100-year-olds should be considered the living evidence that insulin function and normal metabolism are very
The Ad Age Power 150 has four primary metrics Google Page Rank (SEO), Bloglines subs (RSS), Technorati score (links), and a subjective ranking from Todd And. You probably think I’m referring to Todd’s ranking. Au contraire.
This is about Bloglines. Bloglines is an older RSS reader, yet it is used as a primary metric in the 150.
The Buzz Bin has more RSS subs than some of the other blogs on the Power 150 (not naming names, these lists are silly and I’m making an observation, not kvetching). This is because said blogs post how many feedburner subs they have on their blog. Feedburner stats include Bloglines subs.
Yet the Buzz Bin is not ranked in the top 150 (209 currently), in large part because we only have 14 Bloglines subs. Because I also use Feedburner, I can tell you this comprises a single percentage point of our overall readership. By far Google Reader is the preferred feed reader of my subs, by almost 6 to 1.
Bloglines predates Google Reader, which creates a r

There is something about most of us that makes us believe that untimely death only happens to other people. I know I fall in to that category. I jog daily and exercise and eat right and I assume I will live a long life barring an accident. I do have plenty of life insurance, but why should i?
But, lingering in the back of mine and most of our minds, the reality that we all know or have heard of someone that was way to healthy and just died. An Excite.com news story
this morning drove it home again.
Skip Prosser, a teacher and basketball coach at Wake Forest, died at his desk of a heart attack. He was 56 and a guy that took very good care of himself. He was athletic and exercised daily.
I hope he was one of those guys that did all the right things to ensure that his family will be ok. I truly hope that he had adequate life insurance in force.
Still feeling immortal? Do you have life insurance to protect your family?
ANDRÉ PICARD PUBLIC HEALTH REPORTERA customized vegetarian diet can lower cholesterol levels just as effectively as state-of-the-art drugs, according to a new Canadian study.Researchers found that a modernized "ape diet" -- one that is high in fibre, nuts, soy and extracts of leafy greens -- can reduce cholesterol by almost 30 per cent.By Randall Parker BiomedicalThe ape diet had 4 major categories of components. The key components of the ape diet are plant sterols, found in plant oils and enriched margarines, viscous fibre, found in oats, barley and aubergine, and soy protein and nuts. The margarines enriched with plant sterols (which compete with cholesterol for absorption) used in the study may have been the commercial brands Take Control, Benecol, and Benecol Light. To up your plant sterol content using natural foods one possibility is pecans with 95 milligrams of plant sterols per 100 grams. However, the level of plant sterols in the margarines is about two orders of magnitude grea
Keeping your body feeling young is the key to longevity. As you begin to age your body will slow and simple processes from before will become harder. No one wants to feel older then they are and that is why anti aging techniques are so popular. Exercise has been found to not only increase your physique but to strengthen your muscle tissue. Rejuvenation of muscle tissue in older people is no doubt one of the best antiaging techniques. The best exercise to do when trying to keep your body feeling young is resistance training. Anti aging can also be achieved through the things that we ingest. Keeping your immune system strong while taking vitamin(s) is one of the better ways to increase longevity. For more ways to anti aging, check out the book "Anti Aging Therapeutics Vol.8".

We are living in a poisonous world nowadays. Vehicle and industrial emission have caused heavy air pollution in our surrounding. Everyday we breathe the air mix with all toxic. Those conditions are very miserable. With

A very interesting article concerning the shelf-life of digital prints posted yesterday on nytimes.com. The digital process is still in it’s infancy in many ways, and the printing of photographs with inkjet printers using dyes or pigments has a long way to go. Anyone printing digitally should have a look at this article.

A husband a wife were celebrating their 90th wedding anniversary, and the media was there to document the occasion. One of the reporters asked the secret to their successful marriage and longevity. The wife replied that they had never been sick. The young reporter was astonished and to confirm said, "So, you've never been bedridden." And the wife quickly replied, "Oh, 100's of times, and twice in a buggy."
A follow-up to Faith Without WordsBooks are to memes what chromosomes are to genes. One advantage of the written word is that it allows inconsistencies in thought to persist longer, perhaps indefinitely. If a certain line of thinking (a religious tradition, for example) leads to self-contradiction, oral tradition will eventually identify and rectify the conflict--perhaps by shifting to a new paradigm. This is because there is no tangible authoritative truth statement in oral tradition; the exploration of an idea proceeds easier and converges toward a useful, working solution. This does not mean oral tradition is easily changed; it simply has a better response in reaching functional and consistent thought. With a written authority, this exploratory process is more difficult. When a self-contradiction is identified, there is not an easy way to bring about change--because the written authority itself is being challenged. Discussion always begins with the written source, often assuming the w
Researchers today released the results of studies that showed that a substance found in red wine, resveratrol, allowed mice that were fed high-calorie, high-fat diets to avoid the ill effects of their resulting obesity. This, in turn, increased their longevity. The scientists, were, however, shocked at how appallingly bad the mice were at choosing the right kind of wine to go with each type of cheese placed on their plates. The studies also confirmed a long-suspected attribute of wine consumption. Mice were consistently found to be much more attractive to members of the opposite sex after those other mice completed extended periods of near-continuous drinking. The perception of attractiveness increased with the volume of wine consumed. The intoxicated mice were also found to be much slower at running mazes, as they tended to frequently throw up, get lost, and stumble after every few steps. In addition, the inebriated mice were considerably less able to avoid the traps that some of the pr

"In a 10-year longevity study of people aged 70 and older, researchers at the Centre for Ageing Studies at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia concluded that a network of good friends is more likely than close family relationships to increase longevity in older people" (About.com). Based on the results of the study, the experts learned that:Close relationships with children and relatives had little effect on longevity rates for older people during the 10-year study.People with extensive networks of good friends and confidantes outlived those with the fewest friends by 22 percent. The positive effects of friendships on longevity continued throughout the decade, regardless of other profound life changes such as the death of a spouse or other close family members.Another study also reported in the British Medical Journal also suggests a similar result.
