In a more specific breakdown, pharmaceutical and medical products companies rank first with $227 million in spending, while health insurance companies spent the second-most at $138 million. Hospitals and nursing homes spent $91 million, ranking fifth, and health professionals spent $70 million, ranking 15th. HMOs and health services spent $52 million, ranking 19th.
The pharmaceutical industry has spent $1.3 billion on federal lobbying in the last decade, again more than any other industry. And the drug industry's reported lobbying increased by 25 percent from 2006 to 2007.

Scott D. Clark from Denver goes to St. Paul and stays in an Embassy Suites hotel. Embassy Suites evidently has ducks in their lobby. Nothing says fine accommodations like waterfowl in your lobby.
Anyway, the guy gets loaded (allegedly) and decides top chase one of the ducks around the hotel lobby. After cornering the thing, he grabs it and tears its head off.
As a security guard (obviously wasn’t doing his job) and several guests watched, Clark turns to them and says “I’m hungry. I’m gonna eat it.”
More security guards showed up and held the guy until the police arrived.

Wow this is frightening. We have all seen the recent fierce anti smoking regulator nannies basically forcing people to give up what is still a perfectly legal past time. Last week smoking was outlawed in bars and night clubs, going hand in hand with it's ban in poker venues. Not to mention cries of "give smokers no medical treatment".

House Democrats are suddenly balking at the tough lobbying reforms they touted to voters last fall as a reason for putting them in charge of Congress.Now that they are running things, many Democrats want to keep the big campaign donations and lavish parties that lobbyists put together for them.
That is the opening paragraph from this article. Funny how that works, isn’t it? Now that they are in power they seem to like the perks that they were denouncing a few short months ago.
The situation concerns some Democrats, who note their party campaigned against a “culture of corruption” in 2006, when voters ended a long run of Republican control of Congress.
With all the scandals that they are trying to sweep under the rug( just read my caught in the culture of corruption posts in the archives for more details), it seems as though this might not be a good time to bring light to the reforms that were promised to the voters. The last edition of the Sunday Herald carried an article investigating the payment by British Nuclear Fuels of £15,050 to a pro-nuclear Trade Union lobby group called Nuklear21. That an employer should directly fund a trade union is peculiar to say the least; that a state-owned company should hand over more than 15 grand of taxpayers' money to a trade union is obscene:
Nuklear21's expense claims were released to the Sunday Herald by BNFL in response to an appeal under the Freedom of Information Act. The company had initially claimed that it did not hold any information about the group's funding.
But this was overturned after a review by BNFL's head of taxation, David Canfield. He said the company's initial attempts to trace documents about Nuklear21 funding were "evidently not sufficientâ€.
