UTAH LIQUOR LAWS CHANGE...MORMONS STILL A PROBLEM
Utah recently upgraded it's alcohol laws. In a big move for the tourism industry, bars are now allowed to serve 1.5 ounces of liquor in a cocktail. While alcoholics, like The Skinny, rejoice at this news, some bars and clubs are not as happy. We have all been to a place where the drinks don't taste that strong, and there is certainly no law preventing it. Utah bars have had the perfect excuse for mixing a crappy drink...now they are just going to look like the cheapskates they are.Long live the tall glass of vodka.

      Jokes:Evils of liquor
A chemistry teacher wanted to teach his 5th grade class a lesson about the evils of liquor, so he produced an experiment that involved a glass of water, a glass of whiskey and two worms. "Now, class. Observe the worms closely," said the teacher putting a worm first into the water. The worm in the water writhed about, happy as a worm in water could be. The second worm, he put into the whiskey. It writhed painfully, and quickly sank to the bottom, dead as a door nail. "Now, what lesson can we derive from this experiment?" the teacher asked. Johnny, who naturally sits at the back, raised his hand and wisely, responded, "Drink whiskey and you won't get worms."

I was reminded of this reading our local community newspaper “Life on Capitol Hill.” The December issue discusses a proposed new restaurant by entrepreneur Steve Whited called “Encore,” located in the Lowenstein Theater complex. The Lowenstein Complex is a fine example of urban renewal, and home to the famous Tattered Cover Bookstore and the new “Neighborhood Flix Theatre.” Encore is seeking approval for a full bar before commencing their property construction, however the Lowenstein complex is located a long stones throw away from East High School - pictured here from their Wikipedia pag

I’m at a loss for words to deliver this news, but, it appears Lindsay Lohan was drinking this weekend. Gasp! How can this be? She’s been to rehab three times. And despite her two-month stint in rehab, our barwitness thought Linds looked less than refreshed. In the future, when scientists unearth Lindsay’s corpse, they’ll discover she runs on pure alcohol. She can survive without oxygen, water, and food. As long as she’s filled to the brim with Mojito’s, Lindsay will keep running. Yes, it will be a fascinating time until Dr. Johnson spills his whiskey tonic into her open chest cavity and – Holy Christ! She’s alive! Hide our precious moon beer! Ah, my eyes, she burnt it with h

      Liquor Decanters: Specialty Decanters Explained
By: Joanne Dorin Almost everyone likes a drink of liquor on occasion. Of course, there are many types of liquors to choose from. There is the common, well-known liquors such as gin, vodka, rum, scotch, and bourbon; then there are those that are not quite so common such as liquors specific to a region. However you choose to purchase you liquor, serve your liquor, and appreciate your liquor is of course a personal choice. However, it is almost a universal truth that all liquor looks better, classier, and more sophisticated in liquor decanters. Liquor decanters are used to store liquor in a more decorative, matching set of vessels before serving the liquor. Usually, these decanters will have a stopper, cork, topper, or server that allows it to be served directly from the decanter. Decanters are usually beautiful and are often crystal and have elegant etchings along the side telling people what the contents of that decanter are. Usually, decanters come in sets ranging from two to four. Whe

Chicago Mayor Calls for Hike in Beer, Wine and Liquor Taxes
Chicago residents and visitors will likely be paying more to enjoy a drink under the budget proposal submitted this week by Mayor Richard M. Daley. In a move that is becoming all too common across the country, another governmental body has decided to try to shake a few more coins out of your pocket when you decide to relax with an adult beverage.Chicago's budget is huge: $5.4 billion. Mayor Daley projects a $196 million shortfall, so he is offering up a series of taxes and fees that total nearly $300 million. Increases in property taxes and fees for vehicle parking permits will hurt the most. The tax increase on beer would equal an 85 percent jump, adding 8 cents to a six pack. The tax on wine and liquor would jump by 50 percent, with a bottle of wine going up 7 cents and a bottle of spirits increasing by 24 cents. These taxes are on top of federal and state taxes charged on alcohol.

According to The Liquor Store's website (here) the party starts at 10pm.As you may have guessed, Steve-O will be there to 'tame' the mechanical bull. I think the scariest part of that evening is the fact that Friday night is Bikini-Bull Riding night, and the thought of seeing Steve-O in person, in a bikini, makes me cringe even more. But knowing him, maybe he'll just show up naked. Jekyll & Hyde Liquor
Last year a group of us were at a local Buffalo Wild Wings and we saw a great bottle sitting behind the bar.  One side was red and it said Jekyll.  Next to it was a black bottle that said Hyde.  The bottles nest together to make Jekyll & Hyde.  Of course we had to try it.  They brought over the shots and it was warm.  Didn’t love it but it wasn’t bad.  On a return visit we found out that it should be served cold.  That made a big difference.  Since then I have seen it served in other places but never available at the local liquor store.  That was until a few weeks ago.  A friend found small bottles of it.  I figured if they sell small bottles they have to sell big bottles.  It took some searching but I finally found them.  I guess the test phase is over and Anheuser Busch is starting to make it widely available.  The best part is still the bottles.  If you are wondering about the taste the dark tastes like Jagermesiter and the red tastes like cough syr

Malt Liquor Drinkers at Higher Risk for Substance Abuse: Study
Young adults who drink malt liquor are at greater risk for alcohol problems and more likely to use marijuana, a University at Buffalo study says.Malt liquor is an inexpensive, high-alcohol (6 percent to 11 percent alcohol) beverage often marketed to teens, the researchers noted."In our study of young adults who regularly drink malt liquor, we found that malt liquor use is significantly related to reports of alcohol problems, problems specific to the use of malt liquor, and to marijuana use above and beyond typical alcohol use," study leader R. Lorraine Collins said in a prepared statement. Collins is a research professor in the department of psychology and a senior research scientist at the university's Research Institute on Addictions. The study included 639 young adults (average age about 23) who regularly consumed 40 ounces or more of malt liquor a week. The study participants were heavy drinkers -- they averaged 30 alcoholic drinks -- including 17 malt liquor drinks -- a week.Marij

Pistol Packin' Grandma Stops Robbery Attempt at her Liquor Store
LAWTON-- Criminals listen up. You might want to think twice before messing with one pistol-packin' grandma. A couple of would-be-robbers found out the hard way when they tried to hold up a west Lawton liquor store. What they didn't know was that the owner, 75-year-old Rosemarie O'Keeffe, was waiting for them-- armed with a gun and ready to pull the trigger. It seems they changed their minds pretty quickly when they realized they were staring down the barrel of her pistol. O'Keeffe says she just did what she had to do to protect herself and her business. She was behind the register at her liquor store this week, when she saw something that didn't look right. Two men wearing hoodies, with gauze bandages over their faces walking up to her store. "It really made me think an ancient mummy, the way he was covered up, so you know he wasn't doing anything good."O'Keeffe says it happened very quick. She could see out of the window from her register, saw the two guys walk by, and by

Seattle serves up strip clubs, lacks liquor
The dreary city of Seattle attempts to put some smiles on the faces of the otherwise melancholy metro males. After nearly two decades, the city is lifting the moratorium on strip clubs. As long as the strip clubs keep a safe distance from sins (children, alcohol, Microsoft, etc.), they'll be allowed to operate. Though the urban-planning committee doesn't expect many to open, they claim that "the city is better off and neighborhoods better served by having modest restrictions on nightclubs." And what better way to get out of the gray skies than to walk into the silver pole-lined clubs.[via]
