      Pneumonia Increase Linked to Vaccine
A life-threatening form of pneumonia that affects children is rising rapidly in Britain. Cases of the pneumonia, known as serotype 1, have risen tenfold in a decade. This severe form of pneumonia infects the lining of the lungs called the pleura, making it hard to breathe. The cause of the increase is unknown, but experts fear a vaccine could be contributing. A vaccine against pneumococcal disease called Prevenar, introduced in 2006, could be fuelling the rise. The vaccine is given at two, four and 13 months. There are more than 90 known strains of the bacterium that causes pneumonia, and when one is eliminated by the vaccine, it creates an opportunity for another to take its place. In the U.S., where Prevenar was introduced in 2000, researchers have reported an emergence of "sero-replace

Vitamin E is known to be an antioxidant that protects cells from molecules called free radicals. But in high doses, it may also act as a pro-oxidant, causing oxidation and damage to cells.

The data comes from an ongoing lung cancer study involving more than 3,800 participants. Maternal Obesity not Linked to Kids
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- The obesity epidemic has many wondering how and why our kids are so fat. Some feel that if a mother is overweight during pregnancy, the high sugar and fat levels in her body might permanently affect her baby's appetite control and metabolism. But a new study finds there is no strong connection to prove this theory. First, researchers from University of Britol in the United Kingdom looked at whether offspring fat mass is more strongly related to maternal BMI or paternal BMI. They looked at the parents' BMI of about 4,000 children and the children's fat mass at ages nine to 11 years old. They found both the mother's and father's BMI were associated with the child's weight. While the mother's BMI was a stronger predictor than the father's, it was not strong enough to ex

Silda Spitzer linked to prostitution ring ?
It’s absurd that they ask for his resignation IN A PROSTITUTION RING! It’s not like he politicized the justice department, suppressed scientific data, illegally spied on citizens, or engaged in a war based on faulty intelligence. No, nothing like that. He just paid for sex. Besides he’s governor, not some deity incarnate. This country has some pathological detachment with sex that leads people to believe a person is inherently bad because he slept around and paid for it.

Mother-daughter conflict plus low serotonin levels linked to self-harm
A combination of negative mother-daughter relationships and low blood levels of peripheral serotonin, an important brain chemical for mood stability, may be lethal for adolescent girls, leaving them vulnerable to engage in self-harming behaviors such as cutting themselves. New University of Washington research indicates that these two factors in combination account for 64 percent of the difference among adolescents, primarily girls, who engage in self-harming behaviors and those who do not. "Girls who engage in self harm are at high risk for attempting suicide, and some of them are dying," said Theodore Beauchaine, a UW associate professor of psychology and co-author of a new study. "There is no better predictor of suicide than previous suicide attempts." The paper, co-authored by Sheila C

Depression, anxiety linked to obesity, unhealthy habits
By Glenda Fauntleroy, Contributing Writer Health Behavior News Service People who suffer from depression or anxiety are much more likely to be obese and to smoke - both major risk factors for chronic disease - according to a large nationwide study. "The relationship between obesity and depression is plausible for several reasons," said lead author Tara Strine, of the Division of Adult and Community Health in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "First, some patients who are overweight may be prone to depression because of societal attitudes towards obesity. Also, while depression can lead to decreased appetite and weight loss in some individuals, others eat more and gain weight." The study, in the journal General Hospital Psychiatry, compiled data from more than 200,000 adults

Strongest genetic evidence to date could help identify new drug targetsMassachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers - in collaboration with University of California at San Diego and Yale University scientists - have discovered perhaps the strongest evidence yet linking variation in a particular gene with anxiety-related traits. In the March issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, the team reports finding that particular versions of a gene that affects the activity of important neurotransmitter receptors were more common in both children and adults assessed as being inhibited or introverted and also were associated with increased activity of brain regions involved in emotional processing. "We found that variations in this gene were associated with shy, inhibited behavior in children, i

Low testosterone linked to depression in elderly males
Older men with lower free testosterone levels in their blood appear to have higher prevalence of depression, according to a report in the March issue of Archives of General Psychiatry. Depression affects between 2 percent and 5 percent of the population at any given time, according to background information in the article. Women are more likely to be depressed than men until age 65, when sex differences almost disappear. Several studies have suggested that sex hormones might be responsible for this phenomenon. Osvaldo P. Almeida, MD, PhD, F.R.A.N.Z.C.P., of the University of Western Australia, Perth, and colleagues studied 3,987 men age 71 to 89 years. Between 2001 and 2004, the men completed a questionnaire reporting information about demographics and health history. They underwent testin

How Are Antioxidants Linked To Anti-Aging?
By: Carina MacInnesAntioxidants have been widely praised in the media. Many know they are linkedwith anti-aging properties. However this is not new, it all began with one man’stheory a half a century ago about how free radicals were associated with aging, and science has been trying to catch up with it ever since. As Dr. Nicholas Perricone, M.D., states in his 2001 book, “The Wrinkle Cure”:“When it comes to aging, it’s not Father Time that’s public enemy number 1. It’sthe very busy, very nasty little molecule called the free radical.”The Free Radical Theory of Aging was published by Denman Harman in 1956. Mannan has been shown to make white blood cells lazy and allow overgrowth of the bacteria E. coli. Both Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast and E. coli bacteria are linked somehow to Crohn's disease based on the presence of antibodies in the blood to them found in most people with this chronic incurable bowel disorder.Interestingly, antibodies to the yeast abbreviated ASCA are found in many people with Celiac disease and in some people with IBS. Why is the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility not linked to the Clean Development Mechanism?
The World Bank unveiled plans at the Bali conference for a global carbon market in which credits can be generated by protecting or replanting forests. The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility will do two things: (i) provide funding to governments of poor countries to help them set up forestry management systems and (ii) allow forestry projects to sell credits to a stand-alone carbon fund. The World Bank has not made it clear why forestry should be treated as a separate market and not be included in the Clean Development Mechanism. Reduction units generated by the projects will not be tradable in broader carbon markets such as the EU ETS. It appears that the World Bank is trying to strike a balance between carbon trading principles - which hold that emissions are a commodity and it makes no difference where they come from - and concerns being voiced by a range of civil society groups that special considerations should be built into forestry projects because people live there. Or perha
