Exposure to the widely used chemical formaldehyde can raise your risk of getting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
A large study examining possible associations between ALS and 12 types of chemicals turned up the link. While there was no significant link between ALS and most chemicals, including pesticides and herbicides, people who had been regularly exposed to formaldehyde were 34 percent more likely to develop ALS.
People with certain jobs, often with a high formaldehyde risk exposure, also seemed to have a much higher risk for ALS, including beauticians, pharmacists, morticians, chemists, lab technicians, dentists, firefighters, photographers, printers, nurses, doctors and veterinarians.

Ziagen (also known as abacavir) is a common component in the 'cocktail' of anti-retroviral treatments that keep the AIDS virus at bay.
Researchers looked at data from an ongoing probe into the health of more than 33,000 people with HIV being followed at over 200 clinics. The risk of a heart attack among people taking Ziagen was 89 percent higher than among those who did not take the drug. A less-used drug called Videx (didanosine) resulted in a 49 percent increased risk.
Two well-known HIV drugs, abacavir and didanosine, appear to increase the risk of heart attacks, European researchers reported Wednesday.

A study of 77,000 people found consuming 400 milligrams of vitamin E per day increased cancer risk by 28 percent. Smokers were at particular risk.
An expert writing in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine said that people should get their vitamins from fruit and vegetables rather than supplements.
Vitamin E is known to be an antioxidant that protects cells from molecules called free radicals. But in high doses, it may also act as a pro-oxidant, causing oxidation and damage to cells.

The World Bank unveiled plans at the Bali conference for a global carbon market in which credits can be generated by protecting or replanting forests. The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility will do two things: (i) provide funding to governments of poor countries to help them set up forestry management systems and (ii) allow forestry projects to sell credits to a stand-alone carbon fund.
The World Bank has not made it clear why forestry should be treated as a separate market and not be included in the Clean Development Mechanism. Reduction units generated by the projects will not be tradable in broader carbon markets such as the EU ETS.
