Licensing and Working in Canada: Work Permits, Permanent Resident Status, and Arranged Employment
Persons seeking to live and work in Canada may do so primarily via either of two options. The first is to seek a temporary resident visa such as a Canadian work permit; the other is to seek permanent resident status in Canada. Canadian Work Permits A work permit is a visa of a fixed duration which allows an individual to engage in employment in Canada. Such a permit is generally based on a job offer from a Canadian employer, or on a specific intended business activity. Accordingly, the work permit issued to the individual is specific to an employer and a position of employment. The visa has a fixed validity, generally of one year, and can most often be renewed from within Canada. The advantage of a Canadian work permit for a foreign worker is the time frame in which it is issued. Such permits can be issued within anywhere from a single hour at a Canadian port of entry to several weeks at visa offices abroad, depending on a number of factors. This

Should Apple Consider Licensing OS X?
Is Apple getting dragged (kicking, screaming, or suing?) into licensing OS X? by ZDNet’s David Berlind — Are humans just naturally driven to want what they cannot have? Apple may be resisting the OS licensing model that has traditionally worked so well for Microsoft and perhaps that resistance is finally paying off as Macs nibble away (albeit very very slowly and from a distant blip in Microsoft’s rear view mirror) at the market […] David Berlind as wondering should Apple consider licensing OS X now that they are on the Intel platform and that hackers are creating versions of OS X that run on regular PCs. What is your opinion, should Apple consider licensing OS X?  Would you buy a PC from Sony, Dell, HP or whoever if it came with Mac OS X? Nokia’s patent-licensing case against Qualcomm dropped by Dutch court
Filed under: CellphonesLast we heard from the seemingly endless Nokia / Qualcomm kvetch-fest, the former company was soliciting the ITC's help in barring US Qualcomm chip imports, but for those wishing on their lucky stars that this spat would simply vanish into the night, we've got marginally good news. Apparently, a trio of judges in a Dutch court ruled that it didn't have jurisdiction to rule on the phone maker's claims outside of The Netherlands, thus, the patent-licensing case against Qualcomm was dismissed. Aside from claiming that its "jurisdiction was limited," the court also stated that Nokia's gripe was "too broad to give a reasoned decision." Of note, a German court also dismissed the case just last month on "similar grounds," but if you were counting on Nokia to just take the news in stride, we doubt you'll be pleased to hear that it's already "considering if it will appeal the decision." Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featur

Law Society Closer to Licensing Paralegals

Since then, the Law Society has created a set of rules of professional conduct for paralegals and developed a licensing program that includes the same kind of regulatory standards used for lawyers. The first paralegal licences will be issued by May 1, 2008 to grandparent applicants who pass the licensing examination. In the meantime, approved applicants can continue to practice in permitted areas until they are licensed, providing they carry professional liability insurance and comply with the Paralegal Rules of Conduct and Law Society bylaws.More information and ongoing updates can be found on the paralegal pages of the Law Society web

      Licensing
Somebody emailed me asking what the licensing terms were for some code he'd found. I was surprised somebody would bother asking since I tend to assume any code I find on the web is public domain (although I wouldn't dream of stealing somebody's prose - odd how I think of code differently to the written word). But of course this isn't necessarily the case. In fact I believe if no licensing terms are explicitly stated, the code is by default copyright of the author. So to clarify the licensing for anything on this site, any code samples are public domain. Do what the hell you want with them. I do however claim the copyright for the English on here, not because I think it's particularly valuable but because I don't want spammers stealing it for their own sites. Not that a little copyright theft is likely to stop them of course, but I don't want to make it perfectly legal for them either. Whether any of this is legally binding, who knows, but I'm definitely not

Why don't more people follow through with the great ideas they have? It could be that they think it will be more trouble than its worth, that they don't have the resources to do it, or quite simply that they don't know where to start. The reality is that every great idea has the potential to become a valuable asset. In fact protecting and developing your ideas can be a very inexpensive process that requires little to no technical knowledge. Most people think that to bring their ideas to life they need to spend thousands of dollars on a patent and build complex working prototypes. This is simply not the case. The first step to developing and profiting from your ideas is to study the existing marketplace. Go to the local store that sells products similar to the one you have in mind. If it cannot be bought in a store check online. Pay close attent

Not Much Frame of Reference To Debate Licensing
If this bores you, just jump ahead and watch the video. It’s the basic thrust of my argument. If anyone cares, I’m pretty much done with this topic for a while. Really. I promise.   I finally figured it out. Greg Swann is an Anarchist. Google it if you don’t believe me. As such the debate and opposite viewpoints we have over whether real estate agents should be licensed or not, are merely footnotes in the larger world view differences between Anarchism and my belief that the State has a important role to play. Simply put, Greg isn’t solely against licensing real estate agents, but all occupational licenses. Medicine, Law, Nursing, Plumbing – the whole shebang. Gun Licenses, Driving Licenses and even Fishing Licenses are all viewed as curbs on rightful individual freedom. Anarchists take the view that people are basically good, and that the State tends towards evil. For Anarchists the State is a primary cause of social problems rather than a cure.

This weeks post is Consumer is the loser with real estate licensing, broker argues. Text in bold is by me to highlight my point. “The model legislation for real estate licensing laws in every state was written by the National Association of Realtors. The purpose of these laws is to artificially limit entry into the real estate business, with the objective being to artificially raise the prices paid by consumers.” Thats a fine straightforward case. Plenty of professions do exactly the same thing. But then… “Adding a new Realtor costs virtually nothing, so many brokerages are packed wall-to-wall with thoroughly incompetent agents — haphazardly trained but licensed by the state to wreck you

In Canada, Paralegal Licensing Is Good News
In Canada, paralegal licensing is good news, says Bob Aaron, a Toronto real estate lawyer. Among the benefits of the paralegal regulation slated to go into effect on May 1:The new legislation will lead to the creation of standards of conduct and other regulatory requirements, providing better protection and recourse for consumers of all legal services. ... Mr. Aaron points to the example of a woman whose reliance on a paralegal to stop an eviction resulted in her living in her car. The woman was able to recoup the fees she paid to the paralegal after two court hearings; however, a competent legal professional would have told her to save the money and use it for first and last months' rent instead. In the future, Mr. Aaron hopes, consumers will not have to resort to two court hearings to enforce minimum standards of paralegal conduct.
