      Leaning Tower Of Pisa
The Tower of Pisa, more known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a bell tower that has leaned southeast due to poor foundation. It is situated on top of a cathedral in Pisa – an Italian city. It was recorded by Guinness World records as the world’s most tilted tower. But now, the record was snatched by a 13th century church steeple in Suurhusen, Germany. The leaning Tower of Pisa tilts at a 3.97-degree while the German church tilts at a 5.07 degree angle. This difference in tilting is said to be evident in pictures. It has been officially announced by Guinness World records’ head - Olaf Kuchenbecker to Reuters. It will appear on next year’s records. On a lighter side, the Leaning Tower Of Pisa is still glamorous and eye-catching compared to the Suurhusen Church. The title may have been snatched but still, the tower will still stand, I mean tilt the most glamorous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Hmm..that one sounds good. I guess Italians should ask Guinness people to record them as the mos

Photo Finish: Leaning at the Tape
With the upcoming World Championships in Osaka less than a month away, I couldn’t help but reflect on the 2001 World Championships which were held in our “backyard” in Edmonton, AB. How many races are won and lost at the finish line? And I’m not referring only to the 100 meters. Long sprinters, 200m and 400m and 400m hurdlers, should also practice leaning for the tape. Lee Evans was the master of leaning at the tape, as Bud Winters would train their athletes to lean after a certain amount of steps. From his article, he said: I try to teach them that during the last three strides they must Push! Push! and Dip! They must push hard at the ankles and in the last stride drop the head and bend at the waist and throw the hands back and to go past the tape to 401 or more meters. This photo-finish symbolizes how important it is to lean at the tape, even if you aren’t in first place, won by Greece’s Konstantinos Kenteris at the 2001 World Championships Me

      The leaning tower of Belfast
The Albert Clock is one of many Belfast monuments that were named after aspects of Queen Victoria’s reign, in this case after her late consort, Prince Albert. As you can see there’s a life-size statue of him right there on the west face of the monument which was completed in 1853. Whilst many would blame the lean of the tower (which is quite noticeable) on too many bomb explosions around it, in fact it’s actually due to it being built on soft marshy land and the passing traffic over the years. Although presently a little away from the centre of the city, the enormous number of developments currently taking place nearby seem likely to make this a much more central monument in a few years by which time the current regeneration of the centre and the docks area will have been largely completed.

      Poll: Young Americans Leaning Left
Young Americans are more likely than the general public to favor a government-run universal health care insurance system, an open-door policy on immigration and the legalization of gay marriage, according to a New York Times/CBS News/MTV poll. The poll also found that they are more likely to say the war in Iraq is heading to a successful conclusion. The poll offers a snapshot of a group whose energy and idealism have always been as alluring to politicians as its scattered focus and shifting interests have been frustrating. It found that substantially more Americans ages 17 to 29 than four years ago are paying attention to the presidential race. But they appeared to be really familiar with only two of the candidates, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, both Democrats. More than half of Americans ages 17 to 29 — 54 percent — say they intend to vote for a Democrat for president in 2008. They share with the public at large a negative view of President Bush, who has a 28 pe

American Youth are Leaning Left According to New Poll
A New York Times/CBS News/MTV Poll was released today that focused on 17-29 year olds and issues that are important to them. They were asked a wide range of political questions to find out which matters to them and about the up coming presidential election. The poll found that young people today are leaning to the left of the spectrum and are more likely to vote Democratic. They also found that young people are more likely to support left leaning issues like gay rights, amnesty for immigration, and universal health care. Compared to the adult population they approve and disapprove of the job that President Bush is doing in about the same percentages with a few more disapproving of Bush. One area where young people were more likely to disagree with the President was his handling of the war on terrorism. 42 percent of adults approve of Bush’s handling of the war on terrorism, while 52 percent do not. Among young people 37 percent approve while 56 percent disapprove

      The Leaning Tower Illusion
Here is a novel illusion that is as striking as it is simple. The two images of the Leaning Tower of Pisa are identical, yet one has the impression that the tower on the right leans more, as if photographed from a different angle. The reason for this is because the visual system treats the two images as if part of a single scene. Normally, if two adjacent towers rise at the same angle, their image outlines onverge as they recede from view due to perspective, and this is taken into account by the visual system. So when confronted with two towers whose corresponding outlines are parallel, the visual system assumes they must be diverging as they rise from view, and this is what we see. The illusion is not restricted to towers photographed frombelow, but works well with other scenes, such as railway tracks receding into the distance. What this illusion reveals is less to do with perspective, but how the visual system tends to treat two side-by-side images as if part of the same scene. Howe

      Leaning Against the Bubble
January is shaping up to be a pretty interesting month for interpreting Federal Reserve statements as they relate to housing. It's clear now that the Fed is very aware of the real possibility that we are about to experience a sharp correction in home prices and are not only concerned about the spillover effects on consumption and economy as a whole but they are also taking "appropriate” action. In the past, Federal Reserve Chief Ben Bernanke has argued that he does not support the "lean against the bubble” philosophy that would have the Fed practice and extra measure of monetary tightening on account of a presumed asset bubble. In a speech given today, Federal Reserve Governor Fredric S. Mishkin reiterates this argument nearly identically except this time the unnamed and fictitious "asset bubble” of the Bernanke speech has been replaced with the very real "housing bubble”. Both Bernanke and Mishkin argue that the central bank does not have an "informational advant

Left-leaning environmental groups want it all
Sensing that the Conservatives might be around for a while, environmental groups have called for compliance to Kyoto by the Conservative government. While most rational people have silently admitted that the targets can't be met without significantly affecting the way Canadians live, environmental groups continue to call for full compliance to the agreement, and if they don't accomplish that, the blame falls on the Conservatives.OTTAWA (CP) - Environment Minister John Baird has wasted no time in reaching out to country's environmental groups, and they have been equally quick to specify the price of their support. It comes down mainly to one word: Kyoto. Compliance with the climate treaty is at the top of a program unanimously supported by a coalition of leading environmental groups, from the David Suzuki Foundation to the Sierra Club. The list was presented to Baird in a meeting at his Vancouver office Tuesday."Canadians know we're facing a climate crisis and they want to see real ac

Are left-leaning teachers giving an unbalanced view of the world to young students?
It's no mystery that the teachers here in British Columbia support the provincial NDP by a large margin. After all, the largest donor to the NDP in the 2005 election was the British Columbia Teacher's Federation, which provided over a million dollars to their election coffers. One could argue that children need to be raised on values of "tolerance" and "respect", ideas that have been, unfortunately for us conservatives, dominated by the left. But one must also realize that "tolerance" and "respect" also mean allowing an open discussion of all mainstream political views, even those from the centre-right. But of course, it's very difficult from anyone to hide their biases for too long. Sooner or later it'll slip out. Children are subjected to a left-leaning school system for five days a week, nearly 40 weeks a year, for 13 years. That has a tremendous impact on their worldview. To anyone who doesn't believe me, trying walking into a high school English or History classroom and prai
