Not sure if there’s a better way of spending a Labor Day weekend then in Ventura, California at the Primer Nationals. Why is that you say? Well first of all, Ventura breathes blue collar. Nestled between the grime, glitz and plastic [...]

Rather than buying trail mix premade at wal-mart for 6 bucks a pound I decided to make my own. Not only because I think I can make it cheaper, but also better and without those NASTY raisins. I hate raisins. I eat them when I have to but YUCK, LOL.Anyway, here is what I made mine with: Pecans/Almonds/Cashews/Peanuts/Choc ChipsI can't find my receipt to be sure, it may have come out to about 4 or

Okay... I have actually blogged about this one before in my bulk cooking pasta sauce post , but I made a new batch and it was so good it deserved a post of it's own. After the burrito's, I just rinsed out the roaster, dropped in the ingredients as last time and went at it. All said and done it resulted in 8 freezer size servings, each one is a generous portion for both my wife and I for one meal,
Welp, this isn't really bulk cooking so to speak, more like bulk lunch prep to save time... whatever.A little explanation... I came across this AWESOME blog post at cleaver dude where he bulk makes PBJ sammies and freezes them. I never thought of this, I would have thought the bread would have gone nasty in the process. NO... they turn out GREAT. So you can make a months worth of PBJ sammies (c
I spent labor day doing a bunch of great bulk cooking and some other misc frugal snack type stuff, so this week I am dedicating my posts to the fruit of my labor (day). LOL.First on the list is my beef and bean burrito's:Momma and kiddo are at the in-laws this week so I have been chowing on these a couple nights this week already when I have got home late and man are these things good.Okay, here g
In honor of Labor Day it seems fitting to examine some “labor” related logos. Unfortunately, Google did not grace us with one of their many creative holiday designs, but luckily other designers didn’t all take the day off.

The last three-day weekend of the year was spent at a nearby campground. So nearby that we could run home and grab whatever hadn't been packed into the camper. I know I ran back to grab the puppy's chain, baseball gloves that had been left in the backyard, and a few other odd items we just couldn't live without.
At the campground itself we had football, ice cream, swimming, and campfires. We
My friends and I celebrated Labor Day as we and many others in SW Orlando have for years by hanging out at Bird Island on Lake Butler. The weather was beautiful and everyone was out having a good time.
There were dogs running, kids playing, and adults drinking. There’s always a cast of characters [...]
The New York labor movement launched Labor Day in 1882 (later made a federal holiday in 1894) to celebrate the American working classes, both the skilled and the unskilled. The holiday was observed with parades and speeches, and during its first decades, labor organizers used the occasion as a rallying cry for a shorter eight-hour work day. The other hours were to be divided equally for recreation
The Automobile Club of Southern California predicted a 1.4 percent dip in the number of people traveling this weekend, compared with the same period last year. About 2.7 million Southern California residents are expected to travel.Nearly 200,000 people will fly in and out of Lindbergh Field this weekend, roughly the same number as last year, said a San Diego airport spokeswoman.
Labor day weekend 2007 was one of those perfect weekends. Mike and I went to a college football game, had breakfast with a great friend who was visiting from New York City, celebrated another friend’s birthday, and I did a lot of shopping for clothes to accommodate my expanding belly. While Mike and I got [...]
It's probably been the better part of a year now since I first added a "Coming Soon" section to my blog's sidebar. I'd seen it around at a few of my favorite food and wine sites and it seemed like a good enough idea. Something to keep me motivated and on track. And something to give visitors a sense of what to expect, maybe even to get them interested enough to visit again soon.A year into its

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Happy Labor Day!
We celebrate Labor Day today in the US and also in Canada. Many other countries celebrate their labor days in different months and/or days.
What’s the big deal about Labor Day anyways?
In the US many people just see it as a day to get off work, have a picnic or some other big [...]
It's Labor Day, America's vanilla scrubbed version of May Day. I always used to hate Labor Day as a kid, it only meant that the summer was over. And, except in places like Arizona, where we eat Thanksgiving dinner out on the patio beneath the ramada, it is pretty much the last hurrah of summer and the Barbecue Season. But there are some people who take Labor Day pretty seriously. In a few places

Most of us in the United States will be enjoying a 3 day weekend due to the Labor Day holiday. According to Wikipedia, Labor Day is often regarded as a day of rest. The holiday originated in 1882 as the Central Labor Union of New York City sought to create "a day off for the working citizens". Congress made the day a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day also marks the beginning of the season for the

Not having to work on the weekend. What a concept! I fully took advantage by being a slacker and started by day by sleeping in (Ah, yes!). The roots of Labor Day can be traced back to a time and place when the balance of life was askew. It was 19th century America. The industrial revolution was in full bloom, and people were needed en masse to feed the hungry machine of progress. Millions responded, lured from the farms by the dream of a secure year-round income in an environment sheltered from the often harsh elements. They awoke fr
Monday is Labor Day, a United States holiday meant to commemorate the working classes. For me, it brings back memories of my paternal grandparents who came to Ellis Island from Romania and Russia.
When my grandmother, who was 11 years old arrived with her family, the customs officers said she had an eye infection and sent her back to Russia on a ship by herself. I can't imagine how scared she

(Little Rock) - At last count, there were 76,000 people in the United States working as disc jockeys and announcers. But, The U.S. Department of Labor says the number of jobs for DJs is expected to decline through the year 2012.
This is due partly to the lack of growth in the number of stations plus now, more than ever, several stations may be operated from one central office or region which
Pasig Ferry. Divisoria. Iron Man.the pics: started the day at 6pm, and finished around 10pm. Took the MRT going to Guadalupe, then boarded the ferry from there up to Escolta. And then we took the jeepney to Divisoria..It's my first time going to Divisoria, and well we were mainly at 168, and so we had some trouble haggling over the stuff we wanted to buy.We are not good hagglers. haha. The first time Ralph and I tried haggling was around two years ago(2005) at a night market in Bangkok.. It was quite fun back then, and a lot different from what we experienced in Divisoria.Going around was so tiring, and I'm not the type who likes crowds. Or well, maybe I just don't like shopping that much.We got lost when we were finding the Recto LRT2 Station, and we just felt so harrassed. Shortly after
Work, either in Congress or for COA has kept me quite busy these past few days. Not that it hasn’t been any fun, because I really do find myself enjoying both. I marvel at the new things I learn and discover every time. And every new experience has been incredibly valuable. I also get the chance to meet new people – something that I’ve always enjoyed. Meeting all these influential and powerful people, and actually have that chance to exchange views, opinions and even a quite a few light-hearted moments does get quite overwhelming. But I’m really just thankful for that opportunity.
I’m truly fortunate enough to have been sent to quite a few conferences, committee hearings, offices, etc. The exposure is probably the best part of my job. I get to learn a lot of
Isang mapagpalayang araw sa lahat ng makababasa. It has become a Labor Day tradition of national governments to announce the current unemployment rate. In my opinion, it is a clear effort to appease the labor movement and ensure the general public that the government is creating new jobs.In the Philippines, insatiable unhappiness in the labor sector has become a perennial problem for government. With a population of around 90 million, 33.7 million of which are employed (in January 2008), and an unemployment rate of 7.4 % (go figure), celebrating Labor Day means protesting in the streets, activists staging noise barrages, hunger strikes, and mass rallies all calling for more jobs and wage hikes, and on the sideline, to ask the current president to resign. It’s not a pretty picture. As a re
Presidential Candidate and U.S. Sen John McCain, R-Ariz., has finally and seriously caught my attention with a call for congress to suspend the nation's 18.4¢-per-gallon gas tax between Memorial Day and Labor Day. McCain also called on the government to quit adding more fuel to the strategic petroleum reserve. Combined, the nation could see a serious drop in the price of a gallon of gas.I've been waiting months to hear a candidate talk about gas prices in a serious manner, and McCain's plan — albeit the only plan — looks like it could have an incredibly positive impact on gas prices. And this, folks, is good news. Here's the story, courtesy of MSNBC. Let's see if it happens. I am sure most of us hope it will.
If gasoline prices move from their current average price of $3.20 to $5, the cost of fuel for a family that spends $50 a week for gas would move up over $1,000...

Increasing globalization has stimulated an unprecedented flow of immigrants. Integrating immigrants and the subsequent generations into the receiving society is a primary challenge of globalization; failing to do so, however, can have long term social implications.
As I mentioned before, this past Labor Day weekend I attended another demonstration against this country’s use of the prison-industrial complex to detain undocumented immigrants. Like the previous rally, Houston’s local organization, Sin Fronteras Defense Committee, held the protest in front of Corrections Corporation of America’s (CCA) Houston Processing Center.
This time around, there were a lot more press this time around than the previous one. Those from the fourth estate who showed up were, El Dia (Houston’s first Spanish language daily), KTRH 740 AM, CBS local affiliate KHOU, NBC local affiliate KPRC, Telemundo and Univision. The press conference was kicked off by RoB of the Sin Fronteras Defen
On Labor Day, September 3, 2007 the presidential candidates did not take a break from the labor of campaigning. With the almost 2 year long campaign in full swing there is apparently no time for a holiday with the election only 427 days away. John Edwards was able to score some major endorsements during the weekend from the United Steeleworkers Union and the United Mine Workers of America. Edwards is a strong favorite among union workers for his defense of labor issues and support of forming unions across the country. Edwards believes that unions are an important part of strengthening the middle class and reducing poverty. “If the union, in order to show its strength and courage has to go out on strike and walk the picket line, when I'm president of the United States ... nobody ... will be able to walk through that picket line and take your job away from you,” Edwards told a crowd of union workers in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Barack Obama spoke at a rally in Manchester, New Ha
Friend of mine from college settled just outside of Downtown Raleigh with his wife about 3 years ago and I have imposed on them annually ever since. I wish i was writing about the local Raleigh wineries but unfortunately they weren’t in the schedule this year (hopefully next year). Luckily, we did get a chance to drink some wine and check out some good eats downtown.
Saturday night in downtown Raleigh started of with an excellent sandwich at a small bistro style restaurant called Rockford’s. Toasted pumpernikel, melteld fresh mozzelrella, pesto, basil and red roma tomatoes. Sipped on a 2003 Rio Sol Cabernet/Shiraz, excellent everyday value quaffer, soft tannins made for a smooth finish. Onto Vin wine bar where the fun begins…
At Vin I tasted 3 wines. First the 2005 Gilbert Picq Chablis, typical Chablis, juice a lemon over a piece of toast and thats basically this wine. Expected a tad more body but nonetheless still great, 87. Next i went straight for the only Bor
While most of the nation took a day of rest I had my longest day of work yet. After working most of the day at my typical work location I put in n extra five hours work two shows of Fantasmic! It was a crazy day, switching costumes and running around like crazy. One very cool thing I was able to do is that I ran into a handful guests I had talked to earlier in the day. What made it cool is because I asked them questions regarding our earlier encounter, I was able to see the smiles on their faces when it showed that I not only had remembered seeing them, but I remembered what we talked about and was interested enough to ask them how everything had worked out. It was defiantly a long day, but worth it in every way.
Well, my Labor Day Weekend was entirely un-laborious. Unfortunately, rather than sipping mimosas and BBQ-ing and chatting with friends, I was tucked away in bed for most of the weekend. I started feeling a little off on Friday, a tiny tickle in the back of my throat, but nothing too bad. By Saturday afternoon, I was really run down, but since we had a babysitter lined up, off we went for our date night. We had a nice dinner (tapas have finally arrived on Cape Cod!) and went to the Cape Playhouse for a production of "Lend Me A Tenor." It was fine, but the timing was off somehow. It's the kind of old-timey play that needs to be projected fast and bell-clear out into the audience, and once the actors started milking the lines for laughs, I'd had it. We stuck it out until intermission, wandered around a bit, and when it came time to go back in, I realized I was tired and sick and just wanted to go home. Also that I was getting my period. Whoops!Dr. V. was happy to leave the play
It felt good to be mostly unplugged this weekend. I still checked my e-mail and Twitter, but didn't write anything until last night, and didn't read many blogs. Of course, I checked my Bloglines today and nearly choked when I saw the number of new posts. Don't you people ever take a break?Yesterday was spent cooking out at the house I grew up in. The usual gang of relatives were there, and everyone enjoyed seeing Cordy and Mira. Cordy did pretty well, with only a few minor meltdowns. The cause of those meltdowns was immediately traced back to Aunt Dot, of course.Long time readers know Aunt Dot well. She's the mistress of bad gifts, and taunter (tauntress? is that a word?) of small children. And when I say bad gifts, I mean bad gifts. My birthday this year? I got a pack of generic post-it notes. Opened. My mother's birthday gift? The other half of the pack of post-it notes. She was also the giver of the candy pooping cow.Her Labor Day antics included bringing Cordy a box of Teddy G
I hope you all had a nice Labor Day Weekend! Before I get into the actual events of the weekend I want to start with some words of thanks. One thing I really got a lot of this weekend was a true sense of community, people pitching in and helping out and making things just a bit easier for everyone. To everyone and anyone who pitched in and cleared tables, helped with the meals, towels, the fire out in the yard, folded blankets, emptied ash trays and garbage, and the million and one other things it takes to keep a weekend party going all weekend long, the entire staff and all of the host couples at the meeting place thank you. You all made a huge difference in making our lives a little easier and giving us a few extra moments of relaxation.I'd also like to thank everyone who brought food and
This is the time between times. Summer, not quite over. Autumn, not quite begun. Yet, Fortune's wheel is turning again, her hinges creaking as she awakens from the warm, lazy, summer days and begins to turn. Together as a community, people and nature alike, we stand up, dust off our hands, and peer forward. Something is passing, is dying. Something else is coming, being born. It is the time between times. My husband, who grew up in Southern California, does not know Memorial Day and Labor Day as I know them - the book ends of summer. More important than the actual solstice calandar or weather, these two holidays seem to announce the coming and passing of summer. School has opened, the pool has closed. The last hurrahs have been celebrated over the barbecue. The season's opening ceremonies were kicked off at the end of May, and are being finalized today, this weekend. As I reach this bookend, and feel the turning of the wheel, I wonder. What's next?
So it's Labor Day, a day of rest. Doesn't a Mojito sound fabulous right now. I haven't had one yet but I plan on indulging before the day is over. I've never gotten too attached to Labor Day but it's funny that, of the 9 or so government holidays it's one of the three that I know exactly when it occurs. Honestly, I think it's pretty much a meaningless holiday but that's probably because in the past I've had to work most of them. I think Labor Day wages should be tax free. I also think it's silly that people get so bent out of shape about wearing white after today. I remember my Aunt, in her thick southern accent, saying "you must never wear white shoes after Labor Day". Besides tennis shoes and flip flops, who the hell has white shoes? I can't think of one single outfit where white patent leather pumps would look good.Watch white patent leather pumps be the next fashion trend or maybe they already are. Shows you how little I know.
Labor Day is often known as a day of relaxation in the Islands of Paradise. Compared to the May 1 Labor Day celebrations in most countries: parades, speeches or political demonstrations are out and picnics, barbecues, fireworks, water sports, and concerts are in. Families with school-age children take their last chance to travel to Hawaii before the end of summer. Most locals and tourists view it as the last weekend for parties before returning to school.
The NCAA football teams play their first games the weekend of Labor Day, with the University of Hawaii Warriors kicking off an awesome 2007 season with a 63 - 6 home opener. Go Bows!
In addition, the days get shorter, the weather in Hawaii turns to cool nights and perfect sunny days, and the cheapest time to travel to all the Islands of Paradise is during the Fall months - September, October, November.

Happy Labor Day (to those here in the U.S.). Ironically, I am working today. So sucks to be me.Since it's sorta unofficially the last day of summer, here's a song that couldn't be more appropos... Puracane is one of those groups that fit the classic Trip-Hop template, i.e. cute girl in front singing, pasty dude in the back twiddlin' the knobs. They've only released one album thus far that I know of, but it's a really good one, right up there with the best work of Morcheeba and all that lot. How a group like that decided to cover Jane's Addiction I can't figure out, but damn if it doesn't work splendidly...Puracane - Summertime Rolls So, on this here job today, I just got to meet famed conservative blowhard Tucker Carlson, and although I certainly don't agree with the dude's politics, I must say, he's a terribly nice fellow. I'm sure he eats babies and stuff when he's not being all professional, though... positive of it. Remember when he got pwned!!1!! by Jon Stewar
Happy Labor Day to all of you! What's your plan for today? I think this is the only year that we didn't plan anything at all. I guess because ma-in-law was here Friday til...
Today is Labor Day in the United States. Labor Day is an important holiday where many businesses close, letting people stay with their families to enjoy the holiday. We enjoy doing many things for Labor Day, such as going to the beach, having barbecues with family, or even camping. Many people go to public swimming pools because in many regions, today is the last day that the pools are open. Summer does not end here until the third week in September, but the traditional end of summer is today. The traditional beginning of summer is Memorial Day, which is the last Monday in May.
A little about the holiday itself. Labor Day is always observed on the first Monday of September. Many Brazilians ask me why we don’t observe this holiday on May 1st, like many other countries. I found this on Wikipedia-
The Knights of Labor organized the original parade on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. In 1884 another parade was held, and the Knights passed resolutions to make this an annua

It's Saturday September 1st and first thing this morning I found myself working on my Inspirational Gift Gallery web site and I couldn't help but wonder, 'What does Labor Day and Christianity have in common?' It certainly isn't the backyard barbecues or a day at the beach that will answer my question, or is it? The American Labor Day was created over 100 years ago. It was Peter McGuire, an Irish-American cabinet maker and pioneer unionist who proposed a day dedicated to all who labor. McGuire introduced his idea formally at a meeting of the Central Labor Union on May 18, 1882. "Let us have, a festive day during which a parade through the streets of the city would permit public tribute to American Industry," he said. The following September New York workers staged a parade up Broadway to Union Square. Year after year other cities followed suit and on June 28, 1894 Labor Day was passed through Congress by President Grover Cleveland. Over a century has passed since the first official
That's another little post for the "bargain hunter" inside you! Switched Clothing is having a Labor Day sale offering all t-shirts for $15 (originally $20!). Also T-Shirts of the Month will still be only $14 throughout the end of the month. Sale starts today, Friday, and ends September 3rd.
That’s THIS weekend? Wow! I had to double check the calendar when Paul pointed that out to me yesterday. So we’ve all got Monday off! Monday is our wedding anniversary, too.
And today is Friday. Our second week of school, so this will be the second Friday Pablo has stayed home while Mallory has gone to preschool. I wish his class was five days a week like hers! Last week, we just came right back home and played until it was time to pick her up. I wonder what we should do today? We’re having a little barbecue tomorrow for the kids’ birthday, so I should head off to Sam’s Club and pick up a few things. I haven’t had any Pablo outings without Mallory along to hold his hand. I wonder how he’ll do? I’ll bet he’ll surprise me and be a big help. So far, Nikki and Lexi have just seemed to blossom without having Mallory right there to boss them around and take control of every situation.
Oooh, I just remembered, too: I bought new shoes ye

Labor Day weekend is coming up, and it’s time to celebrate the favorite workers in your life. Or yourself!
It’s a popular end-of-summer holiday, so it’s everyone’s last chance to get out, get some sun, and get some relaxation. Many people have barbecues on Labor Day weekend, so a great gift idea would be to give something that’s related to barbecuing. Perhaps a brand new grill for the backyard? Or a cookbook with recipes to have the perfect BBQ? Martha Stewart or Paula Deen have great home and backyard entertaining tips. Also, maybe a trio of gourmet barbecuing sauces? The possibilities are endless.
Also, because Labor Day is a celebration of America’s workers, you might consider giving a gift that will help your friend/relative/etc. with his or her job. For example, maybe a fun desk toy or stress-relieving bean bag. Or perhaps an ergonomically correct wrist pad or mousepad or chair. Little cubicle accessories are great, too, perhaps catering to
Labor Day facts: its is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a national holiday by Act of Congress in 1894.[1]Many stories to follow.....
