Bjork offers journalists a lesson on the differences between engineering, programming, writing, and producing electronic music, in hopes that people will quit giving the wrong musicians credit when they're talking about Vespertine and start double-checking the credit sheets if they're thinking about praising specific people for specific recording tasks. Interesting snippet of video making the rounds, and a good on-tape example of why journalists struggle with campaign spokespeople and "handlers." These are a couple of veteran reporters dealing with John McCain's top flacks, and having a hard time making sure they keep their hands off the cameras.

Reflections of Fidel:
SEVEN days ago I wrote about one of the great men in history: Salvador Allende, a man the world remembered with deep emotion and respect on his first centennial. However, no one quivered or even recalled the date of October 24, 1891, when the Dominican despot Rafael Leonidas Trujillo was born, eighteen years before our admired Chilean brother.

One reason why it is essential that every publication has an excellent online presence. David Simon of the Baltimore Sun, who created The Wire, makes good points in the article.

Though the equation above draws scorn from most journalists, and a large segment of the U.S. population sneers at the title of "blogger," the profession (occupation? (hobby?) (pass time?)) occasionally gets some credit. Most often this share of praise falls upon foreign shoulders, where blogging is a much riskier endeavor. Por ejemplo,Yoani Sanchez, a Cuban blogger, was given a prestigious Spanish press award.
Indeed, both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have run prominently placed articles on Sanchez, who writes a blog Generacion Y, based in Havana.
As I said, this sort of recognition eludes bloggers in the US, largely because our media here is "free." "What need is there for bloggers when we have a robust media acting as the government and corporate watchdog?" many reason.

Robert FiskRobert Fisk, perhaps the leading journalist in the Middle East, has a few thoughts on Western coverage of the region and finds it lacking. He takes issue with the mindset of the likes of CNN and Fox News that all too often parrot the US government party line and refuse to engage in independent and impartial journalism. I particularly like his argument of the outmoded journalism tenant of objectivity and that newsmen and women must report on the side of justice. Fisk argues what's the point of getting the side of Palestinian terrorists when they blow up children. But he is more than willing to apply the same rules to Israelis who massacre Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. In the interview, Fisk says: “We should be partial on the side of justice. Jeff JacobyJeff Jacoby, the ultra-conservative columnist for the Boston Globe, told a crowd of students and journalists earlier this week at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications that reporters get it wrong while covering the Middle East and allow their biases to get in the way of accurate coverage. According to the Daily Orange, a student newspaper based in Syracuse, New York, “Jacoby said the media tends to attract people from more politically liberal backgrounds. He defends his colleagues in the media as professionals who do not intend to skew stories, but he sees room for improvement.”Reporter Hope Morely quotes Jacoby as saying, "It's a problem when a newsroom is staffed by people who share the same political ideology. The left has taken a decided line on the Middle

There was an interesting article on Peter Roget, creator of the thesaurus, in The Times' Books section yesterday. I took a little exception at the following though:At its worst, [a thesaurus] is a crutch, for crossword enthusiasts, students desperate to imply a little learning in an essay crisis, headline writers, nervous after-dinner speakers and, yes, journalists.Headline writers and journalists? All the headline writers I've ever met have been journalists. Perhaps Ben Macintyre, who is the author of this piece, means 'headline writers and other journalists'.In the same way, it bugs me when people (including some of my colleagues) refer to 'production staff and journalists'. Sub editors and designers can be journalists too!Wikipedia agrees with me on this.
One of the big stories in the US election campaign this week was the resignation of Obama aide Samantha Power after she called Hillary Clinton a "monster" in an interview with The Scotsman. She was expressing what's been reported in the US as 'background', that this sort of frustration in the Obama camp exists, only here it was being named in print. What's interesting is the near-universal reaction in America that, somehow, The Scotsman's inclusion of that quote was a typical example of British journalism's 'low ethical standards'. This was exemplified in an interview which MSNBC's Tucker Carlson did with the Scotsman journalist, Gerri Peev. But what the episode actually highlights is American journalisms willingness to cow-tow to politicians. MSNBC's reporter seems to think it's 'low' to re
Seth FreedmanThe fastest way to tamp down debate and solutions to cultural, religious and political divides is to attack the messenger. Perhaps this is most true in the media coverage and political debate of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. When former President Jimmy Carter wrote "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” he discovered what many international journalists have known all along: Question Israel's motives and you are labeled anti-Semitic and a supporter of terrorism. US lawmakers are especially weak-kneed in criticizing Israel's policies on the Palestinian Occupied Territories and continue to blindly pass resolutions supporting the attacks in Gaza. The Jerusalem-based Seth Freedman, who once served in the Israel Defense Force and fought against the Palestinians, writes a refreshing
I’ve come across a lot of blog posts that talk about bloggers and how to fit them into the writer’s spectrum. The posts vary but usually include a question like this: “Do bloggers think of themselves as journalists?”I can’t speak for all bloggers. I can only speak for myself. But when I come across these blog posts, my response is always the same: No, I do not consider myself a journalist. Anymore than I think that journalists are bloggers. Even if they do have a blog, via a newspaper website.Writing blogs is wholly different from journalism on a lot of levels. Bloggers don’t have to answer to a Style Guide (That isn’t always a plus). Bloggers also don’t have deadlines (except self-imposed ones). That is a plus.Bloggers often write only when the spirit moves them, which can

There is still reason to smile nevertheless as dannyarao.com is currently the 9th most popular website in Alexa’s “Journalists” category which has 425 websites. (Finally, I’m in the top 10!)

In what must be a surprise to those who do not understand blogging and others who hold fast to the traditional print media supremacy within the world of information distribution, the respected Arketi Group’s “Web Watch Survey” reports that “when it comes to using blogs as primary or secondary sources for articles, 84 percent of journalist say they would or already have.” This admission by main stream journalists points to the relevance of blogging as a viable and important information source, it indicates that blogging is no longer a hobbyists endeavor, and it culminates the suspicions that the main stream media is being forced (kicking and screaming) into the new delivery channel that is the internet. Thanks to Tim at blogburst, and the Center for Media Research, for the following information in his great article “Journalists Using Blogs As Sources.” Asked how they use the internet journalists replied:

Russian journalists in the Saratov region sent an open letter to President Putin urging him to protect freedom of the press which is under assault by the president’s political party, United Russia. A local paper reported that State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin accidentally had shot a woman with a speargun and was immediately charged with libel by state prosecutors. This incident comes after a paper printed a satirical cartoon of Putin and faces the prospect of not being able to publish any longer. The reporters believe United Russia is engaged in a full scale effort to crush freedom of the press in Russia and will not allow any criticism, however minor, to be printed in newspapers.
Russia is facing a crisis regarding freedom of speech and the press. Continued economic progress had made the average Russian less interested in their basic right of free speech. Putin employs subtle methods of silencing opposition to his rule.
I do not know if that is going to be on a daily basis , I mean every time I open an Egyptian website I find the news that an Egyptian court somewhere ordered to jail Journalists and chief editor of some newspaper with fine to be paid !! Duck if you don’t want to be hit by the flying pigs today. Has the resignation of Karl Rove suddenly returned political coverage to reality? Maybe the media has really learned that reporting the news does not meaning repeating every untrue statement from the right without fact checking. After quoting an interview with John McCain they write:
McCain was talking of course about Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.,) the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee. If you give McCain the benefit of the doubt, he misremembered Kerry’s position. If you’re more cynical, he intentionally misstated Kerry’s position to make his own support of Bush more palatable.
Either way, it was odd coming in an interview where McCain sought to align himself on the side of character.
From there they quote John Kerry’s actual p
Media blog Publishing 2.0 looks at the recent attempts by traditional newspapers to create New Media presence though the use of blogs. The problem is, at what point does a newspaper column end and a blog being? Is it the Wordpress software?
Washington Post’s newly launched hyperlocal site, LoudounExtra.com, is anchored by a strong blogger, and the site maintains a list of local bloggers. Sites like the Houston Chronicle have had a lot of success with setting up high-quality freelance blogs — this is not “citizen journalism” or reader blogging (as the Chronicle calls them — but they’re not readers anymore when they’re writing!) or (even worse) “user-generated content.”
These are freelance journalists, who happen to be doing it in their spare time and who happen to be using blogging software.
The word “blog” has way too much baggage — it’s too often equated with opinion. But a blog is just a content management system, and you can use it to publish shrill opi
According to a Middleberg/Ross survey titled, “The Seventh Annual Middleberg / Ross Survey of Media in the Wired World: Journalists Use of Internet at All-Time High.”, (breathe) 98% of journalists turn to the Net for news and article ideas. The other 2% must still be doing it the hard way.
Here are some snippets from the study:
92% use the web for article research
81% are using search engines
76% use the web to find news sources and experts for stories
73% of journalists use the web to find press releases
81% of print journalists find ideas on the web
If journalists are turning to the web to research their stories companies are going to need to start taking offline and online reputation monitoring that much more seriously.
If journos are hitting the search engines to find leads for stories companies need to start putting a lot more thought into pushing the negative mentions in the SERP's off of the first few pages. Rob wrote a great articl

Click here to see a list of the 143 journalists who have made political donations since 2004, and which party they donated to.
Do you see an interesting trend? I do. To what should surprise nobody, these journalists donated to the Democrat party at a rate of around 9 out of every 10.
We all know about the liberal bias in the media, this just helps us to understand how biased these so-called reporters are. I was actually a little surprised, if I had to guess before seeing this, I would have said donations would probably be slanted to the Democrats by about 7 out of 10 or so.
One of the things that the media, Democrats, and many Americans don’t understand is that there are fundamental differences between our western culture and Islamic culture that will probably never be rectified. There is no middle ground here to try to comprimise on. I know this sounds like a bleak message, but it is true. This is the secret that nobody wants to admit. This in part may be why the media mis-reports so much of what is going on with the war, and the middle east in general. That and their belief that whatever George W Bush believes they must oppose. He inserted a flashdisk into a laptop and intended to open his presentation using Adobe Photoshop Album software. However this software also reveals that all his images collection in the flashdisk beside his presentation, that contains porns. The deputy minister said it is an accident, and that he's not deliberately trying to show the porns.
BY JEFF EMANUEL While I was at the Combined Press Information Center in Baghdad on my recent trip to Iraq, a pair of Spanish journalists--a newspaper reporter and a photojournalist--walked in, fresh from their embed with the 1-4 Cavalry of the First Infantry Division (the unit with which I embedded only days later). They had spent two weeks amongst the troops there, living and going on missions with them, including house-to-house searches and seizures, and their impressions of these soldiers were extremely clear. "Absolutely amazing," said David Beriain, the reporter (and the one who spoke English), said of the young Cavalry troops. "In Spain, it is embarrassing--our soldiers are ashamed to be in the army. These young men--and they seem so young!--are so proud of what they do, and do it so well, even though it is dangerous and they could very easily be killed." Mr. Beriain explained that the company he had been embedded with had lost three men in the span of six days while he was there

New bill to give bloggers same shield law protection as journalists
By Jacqui Cheng
The House of Representatives has amended the Free Flow of Information Act of 2007 to include provisions to protect bloggers from being required to divulge their sources under certain situations in the same way as journalists. Instead of requiring journalists to be tied to a news organization, the bill now defines “journalism” to focus more on the function of the job: “the gathering, preparing, collecting, photographing, recording, writing, editing, reporting, or publishing of news or information that concerns local, national, or international events or other matters of public interest for dissemination to the public.”

New York, May 3 (RIA Novosti) More than 100 members of the media were killed worldwide in 2006, making it the bloodiest year on record for journalism, the head of the UN cultural organization has said.
In a statement on the eve of World Press Freedom Day Thursday, UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura urged the world to “commemorate media professionals who have lost their lives and honour those who bring us information despite danger and risk”.
This year’s celebration will be held in Medellin, Colombia, and will consist of a two-day seminar and the posthumous awarding of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize to murdered Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was gunned down on a Moscow street in October 2006.
The prize was created in honour of Guillermo Cano, who was assassinated in Bogotá in 1986 at the order of the drug barons his reporting helped expose.
According to the media watchdog Reporters Without Borders, 75 journalists and 32

The internet will probably end up doing one of three things: it will fizzle out; it will empower citizens across the world; or it will be taken over by governments and used create a global police state. France has obviously decided that it will take things in the latter direction, as it intends to ban citizen journalists from reporting on events where they may show the authorities in a bad light. Obviously, the usual state-sponsored news channels which show protesters and anyone who opposes the state will still be allowed to peddle their propaganda unimpeded.

The French Constitutional Council has approved a law that criminalizes the filming or broadcasting of acts of violence by people other than professional journalists. The law could lead to the imprisonment of eyewitnesses who film acts of police violence, or operators of Web sites publishing the images, one French civil liberties group warned on Tuesday.
The council chose an unfortunate a
Don't they know that Islam is the Religion of Peaceâ„¢?You can't make this stuff up:Newsroom revolt forces "Star' to drop its "Daily Fatwa' spoof(h/t LGF)A staff revolt at the Daily Star prevented publication of a spoof Islamic version of the paper called the "Daily Fatwa". Muslim commentators said yesterday that the newspaper's attempt on Monday evening to mock Sharia law could have sparked international protests similar to those that followed publication by a Danish newspaper of cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. The mock-up "Daily Fatwa", which promised a "Page 3 Burkha Babes Special" and competitions to "Burn a Flag and Win a Corsa" and "Win hooks just like Hamza's", was prepared to run as page 6 in Wednesday's edition of the Daily Star, one of the stable of newspapers owned by publisher Richard Desmond. The page also included a spoof leader column under the headline "Allah is Great" but left blank save for a stamp with the word "Censored
Shobhan Saxena thinks most bloggers are lunatic and rant about things in life rather than presenting serious opinion on issues. He is of the opinion that most bloggers are the ones frustrated because they couldn’t excel in their desired field.
But the pace at which the blogosphere is getting cramped with half-wits, religious maniacs, failed writers, [...]
What makes this scary is that the terrorists who kidnapped them could be more lethal to FOX correspondents than to ones from CNN or CBS. Reuters has this report:GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinian gunmen kidnapped two foreign journalists working for the Fox News television channel in Gaza on Monday, a witness said. The witness, a Palestinian who worked with the two journalists, said one of them, a producer, was an American, and the other, whose nationality he did not know, was a cameraman. In a news report, Fox confirmed two employees had been abducted. It said it did not know who seized them but that "negotiations were under way to secure their release."There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the abduction. The witness said two vehicles blocked the journalists' transmission truck in the center of Gaza City and a masked man put a gun to a bodyguard's head, forcing him to the ground. The kidnappers then sped away with the two journalists.Palestinian police stopped and searched cars.
