Pretty Goes With Pretty calls on all those writers out there who are being "unnecessarily manipulated into poor grammatical choices" by the possible comma appended to the title of TV On The Radio's new album to rise up and cast free the shackles of oppression via press release. Could this be a call to... revolution? One hopes. [Pretty Goes With Pretty]
In case you want to see Kanye West and his tour manager Don C. go all-out on a photographer at LAX, the TMZ-lensed video, in which the cameraman becomes part of the story thanks to his eternal dedication to "the truth" or whatever, made it to the Internet. (Don't these people know how 'Ye feels about being photographed?) And on the bright side, since someone ripped it to YouTube, you don't have t
Recently I added my name to a mailing list consisting of journalists on deadline looking for “experts” (ahem) for quotes for their stories. It was pitched to me as a way to “build your personal brand” and “cement your place as an authority in your area”. All well and good. I definitely like building my/our [...]

Not even close, thanks to a reader of Jody Rosen's, who informed the Slate/Rolling Stone critic that someone named Mark Williams had copied his Jimmy Buffett piece for the former in a Texas weekly, the Montgomery County Bulletin. Yesterday afternoon I watched the film Capote, about the author of the same name.Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays a brilliant Truman Capote, depicting a man who is simply gifted at building a relationship between himself and the people he interviews.Despite having a high-pitched voice and looking out of place in 1960's small town America, Capote is able to hide any offence people cause him and win pe

During the first few days of last week, Santa Monica, Calif. played host to a bevy of video game journalists, slaveringly searching for scoops to present to you, our dearest readers. You've no doubt read this week about The New Yorker's provocative cover on its most recent edition. I'm choosing not to post it here (I'll discuss why below), but it shows Barack Obama in his fictional Oval Office, flanked by his afro-ed and machine gun toting wife and framed by a proudly displayed image of Osama Bin Laden and an American flag burning in the fireplace. Forgive me if I rant out of pure ignorance, but I came across an article on Jeff Vandermeer's blog that has me a bit baffled. First, my assumption is that journalism, by and large, is about telling stories. Not fictional ones, but real ones in a way to convey information that paints, at least to some extent, a picture of what really happened. When journalists talk about literature, it tends to
I’ve ranted on an on about this in the past, but over the years I’ve complained that the vast majority of bloggers are simply too unprofessional to claim themselves to be anything but the incompetent tea boy (or girl) of a press room. (There are of course, exceptions that prove the rule!)

(Via Steve Rubel’s tweet) Reuters’ blog reports on the latest Twitter newsmob. The World Wide Web is celebrating it's fifteenth birthday today. If it was a child, it would be kicking litter around the street and jumping on fences. One key feature of the growth of the World Wide Web is online journalism, an area of the media I am hoping to have a career in.Why is online journalism so important?1. Online journalism is global. As long as my erratic Digital Village internet connection is working, I can read blogs and journalism from anywhere in the world. I can watch the Daily Show online from America. Compare this with the restrictions on DVD's (including the PAL/NTSC clash) or the small number of shops stocking foreign newspapers (which are usually expensive).2. Online journalism offers more than one way to tell a story. You can embed audio or video or even both in a we

Journalism and official counterterrorism are in many ways similar. They each have important functions - journalism, to keep us informed, and counterterrorism, to keep us safe. They each have the dual goal of getting the facts right, and protecting their sources and methods. Viewed this way, you would think that there would be mutual respect between the two industries, even if they occasionally clash. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Despite the fact that journalists rely on confidential sources...(read more)

so i've taken some interest in photo-journalism as a new style. i suppose it's just an excuse to be stalkerish than anything else, but i'm really liking how the photos turn out. ordinarily, i'd probably have deleted this shot due to it being a bit out of focus, but now, it just seems to complete the look.
the whole shooting while not looking sort of reminds me of the first time i rode my bike with my arms waving in the air. there's a certain amount of exhilaration of not being able to control where you're going. and sometimes, you end up in some interesting places.

My first choice of specialist journalism seminar is Business.Today we had a lecture on this topic from the seminar tutor, Edward Russel-Walling.He told us that "Business is big news" and that money is a neutral thing, as it can be used to good or bad effect. Some companies are more powerful than countries, and the biggest is ExxonMobil, an oil and gas company, with its HQ in Irving, Texas.Options available for journalists include being a personal finance reporter or a trade reporter.Russel-Walling also quoted Henry R. This afternoon Grant Clelland, the Deputy Editor of Financial News, gave a talk to some of us on his paper and financial journalism in general.Financial News is mostly distributed inside banks, although there are a handful of newsstands around Canary Wharf. It has a staff of around 130, 40 of whom are journalists.Their website was founded in 1998.Logins are sold to those in the industry as well.Unlike some publications, Financial News is highly profitable.Got a free copy of the paper and as I am specialising in financial journalism I will have a read after 5pm.First glance: well-designed.
I'm spending the long bank holiday weekend up in Derby.Yesterday evening, while waiting in the pub for someone, I flicked through a copy of local student magazine Dusted. It wasn't the most exciting read, but then I'm not studying at the University of Derby. However I was amused by an interview with the band Enter Shikari - albeit for the wrong reasons. I especially liked this bit:Making it into one of the backstage rooms [in Rock City, Nottingham] I'm greeted with a warm welcome by all of Enter Shikari, who easily look like they could fit into the backdrop of a normal night in [Derby club] Bluenote. I sit down ready to do the interview but just before I'm about to start, Rory (Clewlow, guitar and backing vocals) offers me a beer. A little shocked, I take one and thank him.Right... so you'r
I don't remember how, but earlier today, I stumbled across this Salon article about celebrity gossip. It actually made reference to the Atlantic Monthly article about being a papparazzo on the trail of Britney that I read yesterday. Which was totally the point of last night's South Park. But I digress. I started reading the article at my desk while eating my lunch and I laughed out loud enough times that I decided that, in order to prevent choking, it would be best to put down my fork until I got to the end. Here are the most ridiculous morsels, with commentary:". . . all I could do was stare at my candy-colored cover choices, recognize in some dazed way that I didn't know what a Heidi or a Spencer was. . . ." Man, I miss that feeling. I kept hearing those names, along with L.C. and B
The unprecedented apologies in the Daily Express and the Daily Star over their treatment of the McCanns highlights that responsible journalism is still key even in an age of multiple news providers.Growth of unregulated user generated content has led to fears that anyone with access to the internet can write what they like without reprisal. This may be to some extent true but the majority of bloggers and vloggers out their will not command anywhere near the same number of subscribers as traditional news outlets. If professional journalists are to maintain their overall ‘superior’ status to online amateurs it is important that they continue to adhere to the codes of conduct that govern their trade. In any form of journalism trusting what has been said is vital.Article taken from www.stuart
Today David Matthews gave a lecture on sports journalism, which is the option he will teach in May.He discussed his books Looking For A Fight (about boxing) and Man Buys Dog (about greyhound racing) , and discussed the content of the seminars. This content includes going live, commentating, the Press Pack, writing copy before the game finishes, the science behind sport, and writing for sport.David also reminded people that sport isn't just about football and cricket.Sports journalism is worth understanding, but I won't be choosing it as my specialism. I don't have enough interest in sport to justify a career in it, though I try to improve my knowledge. A fair number of our class will be picking sport as their option.
Internet has opened freedom space for people to send information to the public. At the same time, citizen journalism actually was begun. One day, in a supplied manner one laptop and the modem, Mark Drudge told the scandal of United States President' Bill Clinton with the artist Hollywood Monica Lewinsky.Only in minutes or even in seconds, the sex scandal of the former number one person in America spread worldwide through the net.In Indonesia, the public figure's scandal have happened for several times. Yesterday afternoon we had a lecture on travel journalism from Andrew Grant-Adamson.It was a good lecture with some nice jokes, and I'd like to write travel journalism in the future.Andrew mentioned AA Gill's desire "to interview a place as if it were a person." and he made clear that travel journalism doesn't have to be far-flung or in a beautiful place. Not sure if I'll choose if as my module, as I'd like to specialise in financial news.
Though I have yet to see the newly-opened Whitney Biennial, I enjoy my biennial hobby of reading all the reviews before I go. I'm always looking to test my thesis that something I call "pack arts criticism" is at work. I'll explain. "Pack journalism" is a term often used to characterize the tendency of political journalists to cover a story with a single mindset, and I think arts journalism works the same way. Within days of the opening of any Biennial, I start to see a consensus building among the critics, often lead by critics at the major news outlets. The critical reception of the 2008 Whitney Biennial, which opened yesterday, is shaping up in a similar way.Holland Cotter, in today's review of the Whitney Biennial for The New York Times connects the exhibition with an economy in recess

Today I join a nice discussion about "The Future Citizen Journalism in Indonesia". Some people says that news which is reported by "common" citizen (then call as citizen journalism) will harm the power of mainstream media. This is because citizen journalism offer a personal report, detail, or even locality news. People used to be disgust reading a mainstream media' news which is practically have been influenced by some interest outside the journalism ethic. Mainstream journalists do not have a freedom to report a news against their media business. In case, their policy will give priority to their advertiser, or anyone who took control their major capital, than to report what people want. Bill Kovach and Tom Rossentiel in their book "The Elements of Journalism" noted that journalist shoul

People around the world who turn themselves into bloggers are increasing rapidly. However, the sad part is that blogging is not being regulated the same way newspapers and magazines are. Although there are a lot of blogging experts who are sincere in assisting the new ones, very seldom that we heard of someone teaching how to blog the humane way. Most of us are here focus on how to earn money more than doing it the right way. With this, I would like to share some of my ideas on how to convert simple blogging into a more responsible form of journalism:1.0 Write quality articles only. Although there are common topics being discussed by bloggers,it is how it is being presented that makes it high quality article. Choosing the proper words and format is totally different from just merely creati
Dear reader,It happens that I read similar articles sometimes. It happens in any field - when you do your research, you encounter similar materials, and similar information. But, at least in my own experience, almost all of sources I find are genuinely original, with each and one of then trying to get to its own point. But not today I guess, not always. Random reading got me to these 2 articles: A free guide to Free Software supporters and Are you a Slasher, Basher, Butcher or Pusher? These are 2 great examples of seemingly respectful sites that in a very insulting way try to explain who are the people behind open source projects. And that's an addition to a fact that both of them seem to be posted by the same author but in different versions - one for a nicely talking business people and t
Today I am typing up a list of journalists killed in 2007.The list will go in the next issue of the Journalist, sent out to all National Union of Journalists members.I am working from a report compiled by the International Federation of Journalists, released last Friday.Writing it up is a sobering task. 172 people died last year doing the career I have chosen .Even single spaced separated by semi-colons (house style for the list) an entire side of A4 is filled.Iraq was the most deadly country to work in, with 65 deaths occurring there. It is shocking to scroll down an entire page of the IFJ list listing journalists killed in Iraq. It's a testament to the courage of some journalists that they are prepared to report from danger zones around the world. As Alan Johnston mentioned at Saturday's Ca
Surely, blogging cannot equate journalism with unsubstantiated rumor, prejudice and gossip masquerading as informed opinion and add to that most bloggers are not accountable for what they say and worse - they prefer hiding in anonymity!! Apparently a blog by Will Sullivan about how high-tech freelancers are being hired to fill in gaps in media content creation and publishing in the newspaper industry has been causing quite a bit of debate.Sullivan argues that a lack of available talent and a mandate for newspaper publishers and others in the publishing industry to continually pump out new media content has created a need that outsourcing to freelancers fills beautifully. He lists several specific duties a high-tech freelancer can easily and inexpensively fill (ie. flash development, design, and data projects, as well as the many online loci where companies and workers alike can find one another.Whether it's journalism you're in or any other field, the arguments on both sides are compelling and well worth reviewing. Just look at the response generated on one site: The Journalism IconoclastOutsourcing any tasks successfully requires a full understanding not only of the benefits of doing so but the drawbacks and dangers
Thanks to Progression of Faith for a link to this documentary about Fox News. It is something important to see for your Friday night movie. Here is the trailer. Scroll down and click 'watch film now'.It is no surprise that Fox is a propaganda tool for the Republican party. What I found disturbing is that other news sources will copy Fox on occasion (such as the irresponsible announcement that GW Bush won the 2000 election when it was clearly too close to call). The documentary features interviews with former Fox employees who were told what to report and how to report it. It is an eye-opener.The problem is not that Fox News has opinions. The problem is that it is all opinion, there is no line between news and commentary. Its genius is that it calls itself "Fair and Balanced."At the end of the film is a call for Americans, regardless of political affiliation, to get involved and speak out against irresponsible journalistic practices.
Rules for journalism as written by fantasticsatireblogger Jon Swift.
11. Journalists should not give money to any political campaigns, participate in any political activities or even vote. Former ABC political director Mark Halperin and Washington Post editor Len Downie don’t vote, which is why they are so trustworthy and so respected by other journalists. Just [...]

Journalism is something I enjoy all the time. Somehow I couldn’t pursue journalism as a career. As I shared my teenage investment experiences in an earlier post here, sharing some teenage journalism experiences in this post. Member of advisory board, Silicon Times.During engineering days I was writing technical articles for a Bangalore based IT magazine called Silicon Times. Now this magazine has died as the owner and Editor Mr Harsha has abandoned the magazine and has taken up a job with a MNC, most probably because returns from the print magazine were not decent enough. I was also member of advisory board for this magazine for few years and had to stop writing after my job training started. Few articles I wrote for Silicon Times are available here, though not in the precise format as it was published: Cyber Begging | Snooping | Unified Messaging Hannover Messe press conferenceI also did some freelancing for a person called Prasad who was running a not so popular Kannada fortnightl

In what should be viewed with interest, as well as delight, by bloggers and main stream media corporations, Rupert Murdoch has announced plans to drop subscription fees for the Wall Street Journal online service according to www.nytimes.com. According to Associated Press sources Murdoch is simply “. . . trading subscription fees for anticipated ad revenue.” Congratulations are in order as another very large media entity is transitioning from traditional channels to the new and growing online delivery system.
1. Do you get what is happening in the American media landscape Mr. & Mrs. Realtor?
2. Do you understand that print media giants like Murdoch understand the breathe and reach of their online businesses?
3. Do you see that citizen journalists aka bloggers just like yourself can and will provide the inertia driving marketing and media to online channels and away from traditional formats in the near future?
4. Do you understand the effe
The evidence emerging from the ongoing Al Dura trial in France indicates that Western journalists are fully aware that some of the footage they use in their reports on the Mideast conflict is staged. In the summer of 2006, Reuters News Agency, humiliated when bloggers caught them duped by obvious photographic manipulation, fired both the photographer and the chief of their photographic bureau. They then removed all the photographer’s photos from their news archive. In so doing, they acted decisively in punishing two of the cardinal sins of modern journalism: “creating evidence” and getting duped by created evidence. These principles – i.e., the ethics of a free press – go so deep, that Westerners apparently have difficulty imagining that others might not share our commitments. Thus few people believe claims that footage of Muhammad al Dura, the twelve year old boy allegedly gunned down by Israelis at Netzarim Junction on September 30, 2000, was staged. As Doha is home to Al Jazeera, it is perhaps not surprising that they have head hunted a top American journalism school to join other foreign universities in their state of the art Education City.North Western’s Medill School of Journalism, which is based in Illinois, is likely to start taking students next Autumn. It is likely, if they follow the example of other universities here, that entrance requirements will be high. What is particularly surprising, at least according to this article in the Sun Times, is that North Western believes it may even attract students from Israel. While Qatar does maintain low key relations with Israel, it is likely that many residents and citizens, as well as neighbours such as Saudi Arabia (which does not even allow people who have visited Israel to enter their country) will be outraged.Whether there is controversy or not – and Qatar is used to controversy with Al Jazeera, which has generally managed to annoy just about everyone except the hand that
