My mom (84 years old) just recovered from a serious bout of pneumonia. After being released from the hospital, we happened to be talking about inventions. (Dad was an inventor. . . of sorts.) I asked her what she thought the best invention of the 20th century was - and she said, without hesitation, "antibiotics." I asked what she thought the best invention of the 21st century had been so far and ag
Too many inventors make the mistake of inventing in commodity markets. That is, they create something that can already be bought from many other sources and is very hard to differentiate in a meaningful, price-increasing way. Marketing guru Perry Marshall provides some insight on this common mistake….

We were talking today at work about secondary inventions. It was only after someone invented the phone that the inventor of the answer-machine had a product he could sell. Before then it would've just been a silly machine with some tape in it.And before the inventor of the car came along the guy making those tree-shaped air-fresheners was going bankrupt. And it's also true that before the search

The airplane Numerous principles of flight are necessary to get a plane off the ground. By the beginning of the 20th century, different people had added various components, but the goal of sustained flight eluded all of them -- except the Wright brothers. While not the first to achieve flight, the Wright brothers applied aerodynamic principles they had researched and developed out of thin air to fly the first fully controlled, heavier-than-air, manned, powered, fixed-wing machine.Their primary and most important contribution can be considered the last one: The creation of a fixed-wing aircraft, where the wings don’t move in order to generate the necessary lift. This was the missing component for flight, and is the essential principle behind every glider, prop plane, jet airplane, and ro

I went to the Patent Office trying to register some of my inventions.I went to the main desk to sign in and the lady at the desk had a form that had to be filled out. She wrote down my personal info and then asked me what I had invented.I said, "A folding bottle."She said, "Okay, what do you call it?""A Fottle.""What else do you have?""A folding carton." "What do you call it?""A Farton."She sniggered and said, "Those are silly names for products and one of them sounds kind of crude."I was so upset by her comment that I grabbed the form and left the office without even telling her about my folding bucket.

Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is still weeks away. What better way to kill the time than shopping! At least, that's what the toy companies, clothing stores and electronics boutiques want you to do. Even if the thought of frenzied shoppers and an overcrowded mall makes you nervous, it's hard to resist all the bargains. Plus, there are so many gadgets and new inventions out this year that you may find yourself buying them for both you and the kids!
Great inventions inspire awe, while providing comfort and convenience to the masses. Other inventions inspire second-hand embarrassment and provide a window into the dark souls of the men who created them. Blogger Ross Wolinsky counts down 10 pieces of irrefutable proof that at least one clerk from the patent office comes to work stoned every day.
By Cheddar1. Vend-a-goat The exotic choice for the slaving office Joe with an adventurous palette, Vend-a-goat provided a wholesome, nutritious hit of chewy protein. Although the prototype was a smash success in test markets, the vending machine was shelved after it repeatedly malfunctioned when users attempted to shake goats loose from the coil tension springs. After its failure, creator Ben Dover moved in Birmingham Alabama where he later became a successful lawn jockey.2. Charmin 600 ply For the giga pooper in every family, Charmin developed this industrial device in the 1960s . Its 600 feather-ply ultra soft feel was often compared to the sensation of wiping one's behind with the silk of paradise. The product was shelved out of respect to Mr. Whipple, who suffered a massive coronary while attempting to squeeze the fluff pack and simultaneously asphyxiate himself with scented baby wipes to heighten the pleasurable effect.3. Paul Niemann, the author of Invention Mysteries, listed a cute top ten annual list of the most ridiculous inventions ever created. Here's a few that have crossed the patent office (although are not for sale):1) The parachute hat. 2) Training pants for dogs3) The tricycle lawnmower. (Actually, I'd probably take a look at that one)4) The bird harness. The story behind this failure was as follows: A lady put a bird harness on her bird and took the bird to the park, but it got spooked by some wild ducks, who were spooked by a dog. The bird--while attached
Do you ever feel bad because you made a mistake? Remember, some of our favorite foods were discovered by accident.
Popsicles
In 1905 an eleven-year-old Frank Epperson was mixing powdered soda and water to make soda pop. Frank accidentally left the mixing bucket outside. During the night the mixture froze solid, with the wooden stirring stick standing straight up. But the frozen pop tasted great! Frank started selling Epperson icicles for five cents, later changing the name to popsicles.

Steampunk is a kind of speculative fiction that usually takes place in urban settings where the future meets the past: Victorian era inventions clash with often dark alternate realities. However, what started as a literary genre has since evolved into an art form with incredible real-life inventions, modifications and redesigns.
For those of you on a diet, now's the time to forget it! It's just the beginning of the holiday season (gasp!), and the sugary confections are already arriving in droves. In honor of Halloween sweets and treats (and the means by which to get them), InventHelp® shares the stories of glow sticks and two wildly popular chocolate bars.

We at InventHelp(r) fondly remember picking out great new school clothes and, of course, the latest school supplies. In honor of back-to-school excitement, InventHelp presents the stories of crayons and erasers, both must-haves for a new school year.
Nothing churns up a raging thirst like a summer picnic. Between tossing horseshoes and Frisbee and chasing the dog around the park, a nice cold one on a hot day is a must. As the weather heats up, we at InventHelp(r) would like to take this time to remind you just how the phrase 'Ice Cold Drinks' came to be.
Everyone gets a great idea from time to time. More often than not we just say "hey wouldn't that be great" and go on with our day. Why don't more people follow through with the great ideas they have? It could be that they think it will be more trouble than its worth, that they don't have the resources to do it, or quite simply that they don't know where to start. The reality is that every great idea has the potential to become a valuable asset. In fact protecting and developing your ideas can be a very inexpensive process that requires little to no technical knowledge. Most people think that to bring their ideas to life they need to spend thousands of dollars on a patent and build complex working prototypes. This is simply not the case. The first step to developing and profiting from your ideas is to study the existing marketplace. Go to the local store that sells products similar to the one you have in mind. If it cannot be bought in a store check online. Pay close attent

Have you ever tried to give an animal a pill? It's a very tricky procedure. At one and the same time you have to hold all four legs, open it's mouth, hold it still and, balancing the pill on your finger, force your finger to the back of it's mouth, risking life, fingers and the possibility of losing various amounts of skin. So, I propose this: a device for holding the animal still. It shall be called Parapet (Paralysed Pet obviously).Imagine a mitre saw. There shall be four holes, two at the front two at the back into which the legs can be placed and they're all fixed into place, with struts between them. This shall all attach to a neck collar so the head can also stay still. And a horsey type bit to keep it's mouth open. These new technologies are expected to see its genesis from Motorola Mobile Phone India Research Labs situated in Bangalore, which was set up in 2005.Motorola Mobile Phone India Research Labs director Chandra MR Kintala said it is already close to implementing a new technology on a trial basis to ensure seamless mobility. According to Motorola Mobile Phone, seamless mobility would mean allowing users to roam across diverse telecom networks - be it a mobile or landline, and ensuring movement of all forms of traffic - be it voice, text or data. Besides this, it is working on few other concepts focused on the emerging markets. Mr Kintala said it could possibly look at coming out with technology which will enhance the battery life of the mobile handset. Moto

Happy 100th Birthday Weekend Cat Blogging!!
Here at our house, it’s been an exciting week. Not only did we get a beautifull new brick patio and firepit (see my post on that) but my genius of a husband fashioned the be-all to end-all of cool contraptions….a cat door!
Mike has been wanting to do something like this for a while and we spotted something similar in a pet catalog that sold for about $150.00.
Uh….I don’t think so. Not for a cat door.
So with about $30 in materials, he and Griffin created this door whose frame fits into our existing screen door and has an easy access flap for the cats to run through.
While they are still getting used to the idea of pushing their way through the screen, we think it has been good for them, especially Bustopher who needs to go inandout and inandout and inandout and inandout all stinkin’ day long sometimes which can get terribly annoying. The option of freely accessing the outdoors apparently has taken some of the

Here it is….10. The Telescope. It was invented in 1608 by Hans Lippershey and then improved by Galileo. Lippershey invented it for use in war. Galileo used it to launch the era of modern science.9. The Microscope. Invented in the 1590’s or early 1600’s possibly also by Lippershey. The microscope became a tool used to reveal the inner workings of life and matter, much the same way the telescope unveiled the secrets of the nighttime sky.8. The PET scan. 2. Jet skis - “inventions that allow one person to enjoy a formerly quiet lake or beach while ruining the scene for swimmers, picnickers, and sailors, not to mention wildlife.”
3. Leaf blowers - high decibel nuisances. Commercial gardeners love them, but the city of Laguna Beach put it’s foot down and has outlawed them. If only my town would do that. Not only are they loud, but also contribute to global warming with their dirty little one-stroke engines.

My son and I are watching “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” and marveling at his gadget inventions that lead him through his morning. I could really use a few like these. For example:
1. A helmet that buzzes my head. This would be awesome. I’d never get “wings” waiting too long to shave it. Just put the helmet on and “voila” fresh buzz every day!
2. A machine that makes our lunches for work/school.
3. Cheese Omelet maker.
4. Belt that holds laptop so I can check my email while moving around.
5. Orange juicer on a timer. (and coffee)
6. Large grabber device that makes bending over to pick stuff up unnecessary. (So I can leave the house spotless for wife when she and baby wake up)
7. Remote control that starts car and heater warming up.
8. One of those Sharper Image massage chairs to sit in while I eat my breakfast (and a small one for my son).
