Overcrowding and poor sanitation in Indonesian prisons were believed to have caused the deaths of some 440 inmates so far in 2007, a local media report said Saturday. Advocacy groups Texas Appleseed and Advocacy Incorporated have filed a lawsuit against the Texas Youth Commission over using pepper spray on young inmates with mental disabilities. The lawsuit was brought forth on behalf of three 15-year-olds who have had pepper spray used on them or been threatened with its use. According to the advocacy groups the use of pepper spray has gone up dramatically this year and unfairly targets kids with disabilities who tend to act out more. Pepper spray was introduced as a policy as a method of last resort, but the practical use, according to the lawsuit has been one of intimidation and punishment rather than rehabilitation.

There’s been a marked lack of curious videos here on TFTS over the last few months simply because we’ve not seen anything that shouted out at us that it should be posted. Then we came across this video from the Philippines. There’s been a great deal of talk, certainly in the UK, as to whether custodial sentences are harsh enough to serve as a adequate deterrents but quite whether the UK should take a leaf out of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center’s book is open to question. Personally we think that getting 1500 inmates to perform Michael Jackson’s Thriller is a little harsh – but, from a spectators perspective at least, there is something extremely entertaining about this video and, as a performance, it’s actually curiously engaging. In Las Vegas, Nevada a norovirus outbreak has sickened seven guards and at least 150 inmates at the county jail, according to authorities.  Most of the ones who got sick complained of having a stomach related problems such as vomiting, cramps and diarrhea.  However, no one had to be hospitalized. Brian Labus, Senior Epidemiologist for the Southern Nevada Health District said that “it’s going to make people feel miserable for a couple of days, but they will recover after it runs its course.”  The jail was closed to visitors on Tuesday but reopened today. Most of the inmates that got sick were kitchen workers, which is leading the officials to believe the virus was spread from contaminated trays or food.  Labus said that this outbreak could be related to the wave this virus that has sickened thousands of people in Las Vegas since December.
