Moving to Hawaii and Understanding Ancient Hawaiian Culture
Most people who have considered relocating to Hawaii are imagining scenes of beaches and sunshine. However, it is important to understand the people that populate the Hawaiian Islands and the unique culture that has developed there before moving to one of the Islands. The ancient culture [...]
Your home is not a museum. Many people subscribe to the unwritten rule that you're obligated to keep your great-aunt's dishes, even if you don't like them, just because she used them. But maybe your great-aunt never liked them either and also felt too guilty to let them go. Things don't have to become yours simply because they belonged to a relative. You're not living her life, and you're not a ba
Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) is an extremely rare inherited disorder, caused by mutations of the microsomal triglyceride-transfer protein gene. Quick Sale for Probated Properties
Quick sale option is amongst the most convenient ways of selling probated properties, wherein the seller is not the homeowner, but is authorised by the owner himself to perform the task. In many of these cases, the probator is not a local and hence finds selling off the property cumbersome. First [...]
Yesterday, I read a very interesting news article on the topic of happiness. It is discussing about a latest study of nearly 1,000 pairs of identical and non-identical twins in which they found that genes control half the personality traits that make people happy while factors such as relationships, health and careers are responsible for the rest of our well-being.So it seems like if we inherited the "happy" genes, we may tend to be a happier person. But what if we inherited the "sad" genes? Perhaps then we should "breed happiness thoughts" to these people since young? So that they could have a stronger inner emotional support later in life?I was intrigued by these thoughts as I observed some difference in the emotional state of my fraternal twins. By the way, what this new study also sho
Wilson’s disease (WD) is a rare inherited disorder in which excessive amounts of copper accumulate in the body. The buildup of copper leads to damage in the kidneys, brain, and eyes. Although copper accumulation begins at birth, symptoms of the disorder appear later in life. The most characteristic symptom of WD is the Kayser-Fleisher ring – a rusty brown ring around the cornea of the eye that can best be viewed using an ophthalmologist’s slit lamp. The primary consequence for most of those with WD is liver disease, appearing in late childhood or early adolescence as acute hepatitis, liver failure, or progressive chronic liver disease in the form of chronic active hepatitis or cirrhosis of the liver. In others, the first symptoms occur later in adulthood and most commonly include

Shippuuden had their break for about two weeks, but worry no more because the show is back with fresh episode. Fresh episode with new opening and closing billboards, but wait; they are not your usual opening and closing themes, said new intro and outro spoils us on what to expect on the upcoming episode. If you remember, pilot of Naruto Shippuuden features an 8-minuter flash forward on Sasuke-Naruto-Sakura’s reunion as well as Sasuke’s conversation with the Kyuubi where the latter ultimately revealed the founder of the Uchiha clan --- Uchiha Madara. Going back, I guess I have to spoil you guys and if you don’t want to hear the crap, just skip this part. For the opening theme, it features the explosion on Orochimaru’s lair upon Sai’s – Team Kakashi’s newest member discovery to Sasuke’s whereabouts; then our first glimpse on the newly formed Team 7, Yamato leading the group; Leaf’s finest ninja --- Jiraiya, The 5th, Yamato, Kakashi and Iruka; there’s also a teaser on

Computation of Capital Gains on inherited property. My husband purchased a site from the development authority in the year 1970 and constructed a house thereon. We have been living in the house since then. My husband expired in Jan 2004 and the property devolved on me(his wife) in terms of his will. I have disposed off the property in May 2006. I request you to please advice me about the computation of capital gains. I) Would I get the benefit of indexation from 01/04/1981 or from Jan 2004. To be precise the computation would be calculated in the below manner : Cost of Acquisition X 519 / 100 OR Cost of Acquisition X 519 / 463 krishvara@.................com You will be happy to note that in case like yours , where the capital asset becomes somebody else property on account of death , the treatment under I T Act is same as would have been applicable in case original owner , had he lived at the time of sale. Section 49(1) of the I T Act makes it amply clear: 49. (1)] Where the capita

Is it a blessing or is it a curse?
It's like receiving a present from a friend that you're not sure whether you really wanted. Sure, it's nice that they thought about you but "What the heck am I going to do with this now?"
An inherited garden, whether it's from a past relative or some super gardener like Edna Walling, can be the greatest treasure or the natural disaster you hoped would never happen.
See, the problem with an inherited garden is that we feel obligated to keep it the way the person who planted it intended. Which is all very well until you consider that your lifestyle may be completely different to the original owners. How do you continue hand watering all the container plants while sustaining a full-time career? What happens if the climate changes and you're now faced with a drought?
An inherited garden can be the literal bane of your existence if it isn't managed properly.
If the garden is of heritage and conservation value to the community then there are po
(Written Tuesday, March 6, 2007) I wrapped up my oral history project last week and am spending this week trying to conduct interviews for articles I hope to publish. In the midst of all this, I am very excited about the prospect of coming home next week. I can't wait to see my husband and my dogs. And I am craving cheese dip and margaritas like crazy! I wrote a total of 26 oral histories. Looking back, I am glad my project in Muhuru Bay did not work out. I learned much from the last six women I interviewed in Mbai. I met a woman who was a victim of wife inheritance - after the husband dies, his brothers come to the widow and basically force her to marry one of them. She eventually left her abusive second husband, but she has suffered tremendous hardship because of this decision. During her second marriage, her husband took all her money and property. She had to abandon the nice home and farm that she and her first husband shared. She now lives in a one-room cow dung and mud house
With a little over 2 months before our first baby is due, my mind has been swirling with tons of financial issues. From "how much is that crib?!" To "holy crap I have to research all of the possible college savings plans out there, I'll be up all night!" From "how much allowance should we provide" to "how and when will I teach our child about money and finance?!" While searching for help on these questions, I came across and interesting quote by one the greats of science, Alfred Nobel.
I regard large inherited wealth as a misfortune, which merely serves to dull men's faculties. A man who possesses great wealth should, therefore, allow only a small portion to descend to his relatives. Even if he has children, I consider it a mistake to hand over to them considerable sums of money beyond what is necessary for their education. To do so merely encourages laziness and impedes the healthy development of the individual's capacity to make an
This week on Mr Science, we are tackling some science news issues:A 14 year old boy has learnt to play Space Invaders using only his mind - not his hands! His brain was hooked up to a computer and he was able to complete a number of levels with only his mind. This has implications for controlling biomechanical devices such as prosthetic limbs.Scientists have found that you can either be tough and good looking, or you can have lots of sperm, but not both. By examining a species of Dung Beetle, it was found that many have large horns to attract mates, and many have large testes to impregnate them, but none had both. It just goes to show that those of us with fast cars and loud sound systems are just compensating for something else.Israeli scientists have found that facial expressions are inhereted from your parents, and aren't just learnt through minicry.

Richard asks:
My father passed away earlier this year. He was 86 when he died. I am the sole beneficiary of his Traditional IRA. He was taking distribution for some time. I think I understand correctly that I may set up a beneficiary distribution IRA from which I must continue to make withdrawals (starting by Dec 31 of next year) based on my lifetime, and this is what I intend to do.
