      Avoid feeding rice to infants
A new study has reported that rice can trigger acute form gut inflammation in some infants. Rice initiates a reaction known as FPIES which is an inflammatory behavior of the digestive system to certain types of proteins. FPIES can also be due to cow's milk, mea

The process of applying and developing accelerated learning abilities in infants
By: Deon Melchior What are ways to help develop motor skills as they apply to basic learning abilities in my infant? One great way to help your child develop is to permit your child the space physically to explore an area. Unbelievably, bundling babies up enough to keep them from crawling means they will sleep, yes, but it also means that the development of their brains may be short-changed as a result. Because a baby is bundled up enough to make him sleepy, that also means that he will be kept from crawling around and, believe it or not, developing his eyesight! This is because when babies crawl they make a few mistakes, bumping into objects and navigating around them, and as a result, they gain greater depth perception and train their eyes to work as a pair. Without this invaluable experience in training their eyes to work together as a team, the baby’s eyesight fails to coordinate at the proper rate. What are some ways in which I can develop my baby’s mental skills to promote acce

But it also indicated that the risk of catching malaria was reduced by 65 percent after the full course of three shots. “We’re now a step closer to the realization of a vaccine that can protect African infants,” said Dr. Pedro Alonso, the University of Barcelona professor who leads clinical trials of the GlaxoSmithKline vaccine.Sources:New York Times October 18, 2007

Baby Formula WIth Fish Oil Added May Help Infants
Scientists report that adding long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids — typically found in fish oil — to baby formula may help infants better regulate their blood sugar and make more proteins in their muscle cells. These results may help make better decisions when dealing with pre-term birth, low-birth weight, and feeding of infants in intensive care. Although infant formula is now considered nutritionally acceptable for infants under the age of one year, its composition is not a perfect match with breast milk, so the nutritional content of infant formula is regularly refined. Recent improvements include the addition of long-chain n-3 fatty acids, which can improve brain and visual development. To better understand the role of these n-3 fatty acids in the early development of babies, M. Carole Thivierge and colleagues investigated how these fatty acids affect protein metabolism in neonatal pigs. The scientists weaned 28 piglets at two days of age and raised them for a month

Kolcraft recalls play yards for infants due to safety
The death of a 10-month old child prompted the Kolcraft recall. 12 different Kolcraft play yards are included in this recall. In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kolcraft Enterprises Inc., of Chicago, Ill., is voluntarily recalling about 425,000 infant play yards following the death of a child.CPSC received a report of a 10-month old boy who strangled on the changing table’s restraint strap that was hanging down into Kolcraft’s “Sesame Beginnings” Travel Play Yard where the child was located.Twelve different Kolcraft play yards are included in this recall. All of the play yards have raised changing tables with a restraint strap that forms a loop beneath the changing table, posing a strangulation hazard to a child in the play yard.In addition to the strangulation hazard with the changing table restraint strap, one play yard also has a raised cradle that rocks back and forth. A child can roll and get trapped against the side of the cradle in the

      Human Milk for Human Infants
The primary benefit of breast milk is nutritional. Human milk contains just the right amount of fatty acids, lactose, water, and amino acids for human digestion, brain development, and growth. Cow's milk contains a different type of protein than breast milk. This is good for calves, but human infants can have difficulty digesting it. Bottle-fed infants tend to be fatter than breast-fed infants, but not necessarily healthier. Breast-fed babies have fewer illnesses because human milk transfers to the infant a mother's antibodies to disease. About 80 percent of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, cells that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. Breast-fed babies are protected, in varying degrees, from a number of illnesses, including pneumonia, botulism, bronchitis, staphylococcal infections, influenza, ear infections, and German measles. Furthermore, mothers produce antibodies to whatever disease is present in their environment, making their milk custom-designed to fight the

      Nutrition for Infants
A growing baby needs a well-balanced diet to provide all the calories, vitamins and minerals he needs. There should be plenty of calcium to build strong teeth and bones. Cheese, milk and fish are good sources. Vitamin D, found in oily fish, eggs and butter, is also necessary to control the way the baby’s body uses calcium.Plenty o fruit and vegetables, with daily meat or fish, or lentils, will ensure an adequate supply of other minerals and vitamins. Whenever possible, the foods should be fresh, or failing that, frozen rather than dried or canned. For instance, frozen peas contain nearly as much vitamin C as fresh peas do, but dried or tinned processed peas contain no vitamin C at all, fruit juices will supplement a babies vitamin C intake. But there is no point on trying to force a child to eat a particular food. Between 6 months and 1 year, breast milk alone is not sufficient to provide all nutrients needed to maintain growth. Supplementary food have to be introduced. An ideal time

'Baby Talk' Used By Monkeys To Interact With Infants
Female rhesus monkeys use special vocalizations while interacting with infants, the way human adults use motherese, or "baby talk," to engage babies' attention, new research at the University of Chicago shows. "Motherese is a high pitched and musical form of speech, which may be biological in origin," said Dario Maestripieri, Associate Professor in Comparative Human Development at the University. "The acoustic structure of particular monkey vocalizations called girneys may be adaptively designed to attract young infants and engage their attention, similar to how the acoustic structure of human motherese, or baby talk, allows adults to visually or socially engage with infants."In order to determine if other primates also use special vocalizations while interacting with infants, researchers studied a group of free-ranging rhesus macaques, which live on an island off the coast of Puerto Rico. They studied the vocalizations exchanged between adult females and found that grunts and girneys

Introduction and Definition Hypothyroidism in children and infants is rare as compare to that of in adults. Approximately one in 4000 infants might have this troublesome condition. It is rare, but if it happens, it poses a serious threat to mental and physical development of a child. Hypothyroidism can affect to both; newborns and older children as well. Hypothyroidism in children is a condition in which, there is very less thyroid hormone in the blood stream. The thyroid gland that produces the thyroid hormone is underactive. It produces less thyroid hormone which is inadequate for the body requirement. Since, thyroid hormone is responsible for the metabolic activity of the body; it comes under the endocrinology section. Causes of Hypothyroidism in Children There is no single cause for the hypothyroidism in children. Congenital anomalies have no reasons. smooth trip with infants
Ensuring a Smooth Trip - Airplane Travel With Infants By Susan Heim If you're pondering a trip to visit out-of-state family members, meet Mickey Mouse, or get away from the stresses of daily life, you may find that getting there can be just as stressful, especially if you're traveling with an infant. The key to ensuring a smooth trip is to plan ahead. Of course, nobody can be completely prepared for all complications, but there are a few things you can do to make the trip as pleasant as possible. - Call the airline or check the airline's website ahead of time to make sure the flight is on time. You don't want to spend five hours at the airport with an infant because your flight's been delayed. Also ask how early you should show up before the flight ... and then add a little extra time because everything takes longer with young children. You'll want to allow yourself enough time for unexpected diaper changes, and so on. - Ask for bulkhead seats, which allow for a little mo

      Infants and Memory
One of my best friends had a baby on Sunday and now I am all hopped up with baby fever. Little tiny, brand new babies that sleep all the time and smell so good. As I was holding him he opened his eyes and was so alert, it made me wonder what babies or infants remember if anything at all. My first memory was from when I was three years old. Doctors had always thought that infant’s brains were unable to record memories but not true says a new report, it is just that they only hold onto the memories for a much shorter time then adults. “The ability to form memories depends on a network of structures in the brain and these develop at different times, Bauer said. As the networks come together between 6 months and 18 months of life, researchers see increased efficiency in the ability to form short- and long-term memory, she said. From age six months to two years, memory increases from about 24 hours to a year, she said.” Babies are even smarter then we thought! babi

Abstract: First trimester exposure to paroxetine and risk of cardiac malformations in infants: the importance of dosage.
Birth Defects Res B Dev Reprod Toxicol. 2006 Dec 22; [Epub ahead of print] First trimester exposure to paroxetine and risk of cardiac malformations in infants: the importance of dosage. Bérard A, Ramos E, Rey E, Blais L, St-André M, Oraichi D. Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. BACKGROUND: Conflicting findings with regard to the teratogenic risks of first trimester use of paroxetine have prompted the FDA, Health Canada, and the manufacturer of the drug to issue warnings against its use during pregnancy. Given that untreated depression during pregnancy can lead to deleterious effect on the mother and her unborn fetus, data on the relationship between the dose and the range of malformations is warranted. This study attempts to quantify the association between first trimester exposure to paroxetine and congenital cardiac malformations, adjusting for possible confounders, and to quantify the dose-response relationship between paroxetine use and cardiac d

      Fluoride Dangerous to Infants
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) File under "Duh."  Newstarget reports: ADA reverses position, warns its members that fluoride is too dangerous to be consumed by infants. On Nov. 9, the American Dental Association released an email alert to its members warning that, in order to prevent tooth damage, fluoridated water should not be mixed into formula or foods intended for babies aged 1 and younger. Currently, two-thirds of the U.S. public water supply has fluoride chemicals added, a move centered on a now-disproved theory that fluoride ingestion prevents cavities. ... The Environmental Protection Agency, which sets allowable water fluoride levels, is required to consider the most vulnerable members of a population, so allowable fluoride levels should be near zero to protect infants. "This should end water fluoridation," Beeber said. "Fluoridation is a failed concept that must be abandoned before more Americans are harmed." This news will make lots of people I know happy.  People lik

Taking Pictures of Toddlers and Infants
If you've been reading my blog you would notice that I probably have more pictures of Ava than Cameron. This was not intentional. It's a lot easier taking pictures of Ava since she cannot get up and run away from me - yet. Cameron, on the other hand, sprints away from me as soon as he sees my camera. For example, here is a shot of Ava:And this is what I got with Cameron: I was running after him to get a picture when he finally stopped and looked at me. Notice the evil eye? He can almost roll his eyes to the back of his head and really scare the cr** out of me. Maybe if I had a better camera? Too bad Santa came and went. Owen, if you read this, got any suggestions on what kind of camera to get -that's not going to break the bank, and give John a heart attack?
