Indiana Independents and Republicans May Decide Primary
The Howey-Gauge Poll suggests that the Indiana Democratic primary will be decided by independents and Republicans as Democrats are evenly split, with independents favoring Obama and Republicans backing Clinton: There appears to be two kinds of Republicans: the “Obamacans” as the Illinois senator likes to call them - earnest Republicans deeply disappointed in their own party’s [...]

Obama More Electable As Appeals to Independents
John Avlon, author of Independent Nation: How Centrism Can Change American Politics has an op-ed in The New York Post explaining why Obama is more electable that Clinton. (Hat tip to Joe Gandelman). It’s electability, stupid. That’s what Hillary Clinton and her surrogates have been spinning to super-delegates and anyone else who will listen since she lost [...]

Grocery sector tinkering ‘Will not help independents’
For many years in the UK, we have witnessed the massive growth of supermarket chains decimate the competition from small businesses. By being allowed to develop massive stores out of town, High Street trade in some towns is practically non existent. Not content at that the stores have in a short time turned grocery shopping [...]

Jewelry Retailing - The Current State Of The Industry & What The Future Holds For Independents
Over the last 10 years there are so many things that have changed in the jewelry business, some of them for the good of the industry and others to its detriment. The internet has accelerated the transference of information and made products readily available. National chain stores have changed their business models to become more aggressive and today's consumers have altered their buying habits accordingly. Industry veterans suggest that 10,000 privately held stores could close over the next 7-10 years. Simply put, the jewelry business isn't the same as it was 10 years ago and independently owned jewelry store owners need to respond quickly. With this article, I hope to offer advice on how to overcome the many challenges that independents will encounter.Today's consumers can be categorized

      Ron Paul Wins Independents
Andrew Sullivan points out that these are the people you need on your side to win a national election. The Christian evangelical base can make you shine in Iowa as it did for Pat Robertson in 1988, but it cannot deliver a general election. A much, MUCH broader coalition is needed for that, and (forgive the pun) Huckabee hasn't got a prayer.

Libertarians bummed at lack of outrage from Independents
Following the recent U.S. District Court ruling barring Independents from voting in Libertarian primaries, the Arizona Libertarian Party (ALP) braced for an onslaught of angry Independent voters. That barrage never came. Now, a few weeks later, the sense of defiance has turned to a feeling of regret.“I am not going to lie,” said Michael Kielsky, Chairman of the Arizona Libertarian Party, “I was a little bummed when the phone didn’t start ringing off the hook. I saw this as a way to tell some people about our libertarian principles, but no one seems to care.”“It sort of feels like we threw a party and nobody came,” lamented David B. Schlosser,ALP’s Secretary, “I thought we would have a wave of people changing their voter registration or calling us begging to allow them to vote in our primary. I even picked up the phone a few times to check the dial tone to make sure the thing was working.”According to the Secretary of State’s most recent voter counts, there are ab

Businessmen and Independents Increasingly Supporting Democrats Over Republicans
I’ve had several recent posts on the movement of new voters to the Democratic Party, often noting that social issues and one’s view on the war have replaced economics as the major points differentiating liberals from conservatives. As a consequence, Democrats are picking up support from new sources, such as from the affluent suburbs and groups such as the “Starbucks Republicans” and “South Park Republicans” which disagree with the Republicans on social issues and the war but are more economically moderate than traditional Democrats. The Wall Street Journal has an article today on another group which is increasingly supporting the Democrats and The New York Times has an article on New Hampshire independents. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Republican Party is losing its traditional support from the business community. Factors cited include opposition to the war, liberal attitudes on social issues, and opposition to the fiscal responsibility o

I recommend independents to take a look at www.cuip.org. I have worked with this group since 2001.The Committee for a Unified Independent Party, Inc. (CUIP) is a national strategy center and organizing hub that designs and executes cutting edge tactics to develop America's growing independent movement. Founded in 1994, CUIP mounts political, legal, legislative and organizing challenges to partisan control of the political process. It has pioneered methods of organizing independents without a political party, creating independent voter associations to project the voice of the 35% of the electorate that considers itself independent. For CUIP, independents are not "swing voters" who exist to be wooed and swayed by one or the other major party. Independents have strongly held beliefs about how partisanship and ideological labeling are corrupting and constraining progress. Independents defy traditional political labels; what they share is support for the principle that radical stru
