The run of peculiar incoming links to this blog continue. Every time I mention something finance related, a whole raft of blog aggregation blogs pick up the post and republish it. The theory is that they’ll make money on the ads on their site and, of course, they don’t have any nasty work to do once they set up the aggregator. I write a fair bit on various finance topics so I can understand them monitoring this blog for any appropriate key words and then picking up on them. Or is it simply the category “banking & finance” that they are picking up on? Well, this entry is tagged with that as an experiment so I’ll know better tomorrow. Other places are a bit more unusual. According to an inventory sheet leaked by through AT&T, it shows that a new color, Deep Red, will start brandishing the phone. Although Apple has several colors for it’s iPod, there has been no news of changing or adding to the repertoire of the iPhone. What I am going to explain here is nothing new, but I would just like to share with you people a trick that has been very useful to me in past few years, especially for superficially scrutinizing cyber-strangers. There is much software out there that will allow you to geo-locate the incoming mails and thereby making this task much easier to perform. Geo-location is not a very complex process superficially and it consists of two basic steps. Find out the IP address (Internet protocol address) from where the mail originated. I was basically right re my friends World Of Warcraft problem in that his firewall wasn’t allowing incoming WOW data. He had a Norton firewall and the XP firewall running at the same time as well as the firewall on the router so it was a miracle that any outbound WOW data got through. I don’t think AOL understand router firewalls, as they were telling him to open ports through the Norton and XP firewalls. Well that’s fine provided the router firewall is letting the data through in the first place. I told him to disable the Norton and XP firewalls and logon to the router and open the ports that WOW wants open. I think he’s done some of them but you have to stipulate for which PC the ports are to be opened for. And of course you then have to start talking about computer names which this person has no knowledge of. Configuring incoming mail on MOSS 2007 and Exchange 2007 took a little bit of fiddling about with and quite a bit of standing back going um and ah. I configured the MOSS screen easy enough. The key fields were the Active Directory container and the SMTP mail server and Accept messages from authenticated users only - other settings can be refined later.
