Photos from hometown baby shower:Earlier this month, long-time friends Shannan and Christine threw me a beautiful, baby shower. It was so much fun (yes, baby showers can actually be fun!) and wonderful to see everybody. Everyone was extremely generous, and I came back home feeling so much more ready and prepared for the baby. Thank you to all for attending! I've stated before that I always enjoy visits up North. Today we ended up at Middlesbrough, which is my hometown. This was in support of Middlesbrough Environment City, an organisation set up in the 90's to promote environmental sustainability. The event was promoting Middlesbrough councils support of Fairtrade fortnight, and we supplied one of our Victorian candy floss carts giving away free Fairtrade candy floss. This is one of 3 events involving North East local authorities that we are supplying candy floss to. One of the events will see us sending an espresso coffee cart along with Fairtrade tea and coffee.
Whilst in the Boro, I had a walk around the town, I hadn't realised just how much development was going in in the area. Captain Cook's Square where we were operating looked really

We all remember Cathy Freeman winning the 400 meters in front of her home country at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Prior to the start of the 400 meter rounds, she took part and lit the Olympic flame at the Opening ceremonies. I have to admit, this was the most stunning flame lighting spectacle to date, next to the paraolympian Archer who lit the flame in Barcelona 1992.
There was the much ballyhooed hype with Konstantinos Kenteris who won the 200 meters at the same Olympics when Michael Johnson and Maurice Green both failed to make the finals at their respective USATF Trials. His chance to repeat as the 200 meter winner in front of his hometown Greece in 2004 never materialized for reasons still under investigation, and I was 100% certain he would be the one to light the flame.
POP QUIZ: Who lit the torch at these games?
In 2001, Kenteris proved he was no fluke by winning the 200 meters at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton.

This is a short 2 minute video thats quickly making its way around the web. It posits the question: what are your three special places in your hometown? Check it out!!!
Really cool project. Very well done. I’m very curious how the project progresses both in terms of video and the actual trip. For academic and political scholars out there–interesting use of rhetoric too–particuarly the rhetoric of social movements. Thoughts? Personally, I’d have to say Cafe Coco, Music Row, and the Bluebird near the top of my list. So where are your favorites?

Fall is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. Football, Festivals, Colorful Leaves and….Oh yes, Candy! Boy do I mean candy, and lots of it. I mentioned in a previous post about the Halloween Safe Zone over the mountain in Blue Ridge Georgia sponsored by the Blue Ridge Business Association. Well I didn’t know that Blairsville also had a similar event, but they do.
Hometown Halloween on the Square will be on Wednesday, October 31st.
Festivities will begin around 6:00 and last ‘til either the candy is gone or 8:00, which ever comes first.
This event is sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority and the Union County Historical Society. This years event will consist of costume contests, storytelling, children’s games, lots of activities and I am sure a whole bunch of fun! (more…)

Elena Dementieva wins her eight career title by beating Serena Williams 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 at the Kremlin Cup.
This is her third attempt to win in her hometown and finally she did it.

This from the Boston Globe:Innovative in-house programs help temper spiraling expensesSome Lexington (MA) students with disabilities used to ride in vans for as much as two hours every day to attend specialized schools in distant communities. This year, the 47 middle school and high school students go to classes in their hometown. The result: The students have more time for learning, friends, family, play, and sleep. But perhaps as impressive - at least from the number-crunchers' point of view - the move has helped lop almost $1 million off the municipal budget."There is a strong financial benefit to create in-house capacity," Lexington Superintendent of Schools Paul Ash said.So far, the changes in Lexington have won approval from the local Special Education Parent Advisory Council, the key organization looking out for the rights of parents of children with special needs."We really do want as many kids as possible to be educated in their home schools," said Dale Hernquist, council coch
Last 2 weeks, I was doing the study on the feasibility of making a wiki and didn’t write any blog. I was in the progress of making a wiki for backpack traveller. This wiki will gather the information of the small towns all over the world. I know that I could not complete this project by myself, therefore, I hope that you can contribute some tourist guide and write it in the wiki for our friends (backpack travellers) from oversea.
By writing the page about your hometown, you are actually helping a lot of backpack travellers to solve their problem in accommodation and transport. You help them to avoid from losing their way. As a rewards to the contributor, the writer is allowed to put the banner for local tourist agency to earn some money in advertising.
Here are some photographs about what the people eat in the world, these photo inspirited me to create thehometownwiki.com

One of Manchester’s finest rising stars, The Courteeners have announced details of a special one off hometown show for Christmas.
They’ll play the Manchester Ritz on Thursday 13th December.
Tickets go on sale on Friday (12th October) at 9am.
The band are also set to release their new single ‘Acrylic’ on October 22.
I grew up in Sydney. It was a magical place. In the mid-1980s you could walk down Oxford St during Mardi Gras and simply step off the kerb to join one of the floats in the parade, and dance your way up to Taylor Square.
My piano teacher lived in an amazing warehouse on the water’s edge in Balmain; lessons in blues and rock augmented the classical training I had at school. The beaches were just suburbs where people lived, mostly surfers and Eastern European immigrants; George St still had charm, between the Regent Theatre and that tiny old art deco cinema on the corner; and Newtown was a little bit seedy and teeming with music and life from all corners of the world. Walking across the building site that is now Darling Harbour from then-derelict Pyrmont, I remember Centrepoint tower rising up behind the rubble, a symbol of modernity and the constantly changing skyline of the city.

Constructed with hardwoods, the Hometown is a nostalgic reminder of idyllic days. It features a picket fence frame which looks charming and carefree. The headboard arches up like a gate with the footboard conveniently straight for the youngster to dangle his or her feet over the edge.

Some time ago one of my friends passed on a little information to me about a little town in Pennsylvania named Hometown. Given the name of my trip I couldnt believe it. Cmon, I couldnt go to all 50 states on the Hometown Invasion Tour without stopping in Hometown, PA. For a while I didnt think I was going to make it to Hometown because of my dates and locations. Plans change for the good all the time. Take a side trip to State College for the weekend while coming from Erieville and boom, youre just 20 miles from Hometown off the interstate.
Erieville is a small town, no more than 1,500 people. Im thinking it would compare to my hometown of Baraga or maybe Justin, TX. I was anxious to find a welcome sign, big or small, where I could take a photo of myself and the Compass in front of it. Sadly, no such sign existed. I even asked a police officer and surely he would know. Supposedly there are no t-shirts are anything. Somebody could be sitting on a gold mine, th

What an amazing thing it is to return to your hometown after many years. If you can embrace the good and the bad memories, you can learn a lot about yourself. I have always thought a place is like a person. It has a personality. It has a sense..a sound...a feel...a smell..It grows and changes. You can feel comforted by it or repelled. You can get along famously or not. I was blessed this weekend with having the opportunity to catch up with my old friend Cleveland. Her streets were arms which wrapped around me in a knowing embrace. I learned of the successes I had missed, her growth. I also learned that many aspects of her are the same....so many of my favorite old haunts are still there. She is a reflection of me. I have grown and changed so much since I left her...but my heart remains. We reminisced over a few glasses of wine. She's quit smoking. She's put on some weight. But I think she looks great..... And now I know that she will always be there for me.....even if we go a long ti
This from the Herald-Leader.Hey, you know what would be sweeter than a plateful of doughnuts (Mmmm ... doughnuts!) to the folks in Springfield, Ky.? More intoxicating than a truckload of Duff beer? More smooth-jazz cool than a Lisa Simpson saxophone solo?To be named the site of the world premiere of the The Simpsons Movie, due July 27. It's the big-screen version of the Fox TV animated series. And Springfield, Ky., pop. 2,800, is among 14 Springfields across the country vying to host the premiere."There's really a buzz around town," said Jeff Moreland, editor of The Springfield Sun weekly newspaper. "We've had a lot of excitement about it."Each town submitted a 3- to 5-minute video to make its case as the premiere site. The Kentucky Springfield asked Washington County native and Lexington resident Michael Breeding to direct its video."I have never had more fun," said Breeding, who has made documentaries on Keeneland and other Kentucky subjects. "It's a sweet little community. We ha
On Monday, June 18, Charleston firefighters were called to the scene of a major blaze. A fire apparently started in the trash bin of a furniture store. The blaze quickly advanced inside the store. Firefighters went into the store to rescue four people. Unfortunately, nine firefighters were lost that night when the roof collapsed on them.
This tragedy has touched all of us here in the US, especially in my city which has not lost a firefighter in the line of duty since 1965. These men gave their lives for the most noble profession- saving the lives of others. No other lives were lost in the tragedy other than those of the nine brave men.
Please keep the families of these men in your prayers, as well as all firefighters since they are all brothers.

One of the regrets I have about living all over the country is that we missed so many opportunities to 'play tourist' in our own hometowns and missed so many great things those area's offered. We did a few things, at my insistance, but my husband has never been one to want to go anywhere or do anything... so we missed out on so many great opportunities! Museums, buildings, events, parks, etc.
This is one part of the show I look forward to every season cause it shows how a typical person can suddenly become a super star. These most watchable videos are contributed by their very own fan and I must say after watching them all, we have 3 very diverse singers here with their own unique style.First up is BlakeNext is JordinLast but not least... Melinda but unfortunately the owner disabled the embed feature so just visit this link directly for the best fan made video amongst the 3.Melinda Doolittle Honored in HometownOverall... Jordin was totally amazing! Melinda a little too preachy for my taste but I still adore her and the video of Blake shows just how much stranglehold he's got over his teenage fans. So whoever leaves later this week should be proud of themselves cause they are already winners in their own right.Just look at Elliot Yamin who was eliminated at this stage last season, he still managed to get a recording deal and he sure deserves it too.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The three remaining 'American Idol' contestants took to the streets Friday -- of their rapturous hometowns. Local loyalists showed all day just who they thought should win the wildly popular singing contest, which will feature some of the scenes next week. Back before she was an "American Idol" finalist, Melinda Doolittle was a Belmont University mascot. She wore a hot, sweaty bear costume and jumped around in the name of school spirit. The tables were turned on Doolittle in a big way when she returned Friday to her alma mater. Hundreds waved signs and shouted encouragement to her: "We love you, Melinda." "You're going to win, Melinda." "Doolittle's Da Bomb." "Melinda for President." The school even named a street after her, unveiling a black iron post with a blue sign that read: "Melinda Doolittle Way." Doolittle, who arrived waving from the back of a white convertible Mustang, looked -- all too characteristically, as "Idol" judge Simon Cowell has scolded her -

I just read a New York Times article about the emerging food scene in the Twin Cities. Several notable chefs, like Wolfgang Puck and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, have recently opened their doors in the burgeoning downtown restaurant scene. I'm definitely looking forward to checking things out the next time I'm back home.
A while back I wrote how I think most folks are bad tourists in their own hometown. I plead guilty. There’s so much to see and do here in New England - in Providence and Rhode Island included. Yet I gloss over most of it with the dismissive thought that it’ll always be there. What’s the hurry? I can see it tomorrow, right? But why should my hometown be any less interesting or exotic simply because it’s geographically closer to me than the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat or the Pyramids? So, starting today I’m making a concerted effort to rediscover my hometown.
For the past two years, I’ve pared down all of my daily expenses - Starbucks coffee, my Martha Stewart Living subscription, etc. Sure, I could find a $200 per month room to rent in one of the many student accommodations (read: closets) near RISD or Brown. But I decided that I want to spend my last eighteen months really loving where I live. So last October, K and I moved into an incredible con
Apparently, there has been a lot of discussion as of late about why Google switched all the New Orleans imagery back to pre-Katrina imagery. This is a quote off Slashdot:"CNN reports that images of lands devastated by Hurricane Katrina have been replaced on Google's map service with pre-Hurricane Katrina imagery. Now a subcommittee from The House Committee on Science and Technology has asked CEO Eric Schmidt for Google's motivation behind the imagery switch. '[Congressional subcommittee chair Brad] Miller asked Google to brief his staff by April 6 on who made the decision to replace the imagery with pre-Katrina images, and to disclose if Google was contacted by the city, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Geological Survey or any other government entity about changing the imagery. "To use older, pre-Katrina imagery when more recent images are available without some explanation as to why appears to be fundamentally dishonest," Miller said.' It is worth pointing out th

This morning, Barbara Nordby of the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune published a marvelous article about the new book -- especially the crime's enduring effects for a handful of local people. Nordby grasped the consequences of the crime, understood its impacts ... and actually read the book.My first-ever real newspaper job was at the Star-Tribune. When I wasn't playing sports in high school, I worked as a clerk in the sports section under the locally legendary sports editor Chuck Harkins (who once told me, "Always come back with something, dammit," and I always have, mostly because he was a tough son-of-a-bitch whom I still think of as one of the great newspapermen I've ever met.)I worked at the Star-Tribune again as a young reporter after college, rising eventually to being the assistant city editor before moving off to become the Features Editor of the Santa Fe (N.M.) New Mexican at the tender age of 26.It's good to be home, but it's also nice to see my name -- if not my byline -- bac
I want to start this first post of the year 2007 with the photo above. It is the city hall in my hometown of Waltham Ma just before they took the decorations down and put them away till next year. For anyone who may be interested in a bit of history. Waltham was Founded in 1636, incorporated into a town in 1738 and then into a city in 1884. Historically Waltham is probably best known as the home of the Waltham Watch Factory, a pioneer company of the Industrial Revolution. Today the city is the home to two major institutions of higher learning, Bentley College and Brandeis University. Also if you happen to be a basketball fan the Boston Celtics have their practice sessions at Brandeis University. For much more information about Waltham just click on the Title Hometown at the top of the page posting. This is a really good photo I got from a friend in a email It is a sunset from the north pole.
Thought this photo was a good enough to show.
