For those hoping to create a greener world, our country’s millions of miles of asphalt roads may seem like an odd place to seek solutions. Yet, it’s precisely because asphalt is so common...
Create And Construct Environment With Harmony
James Rowen, at The Political Environment, has written elegantly about the inappropriate policies that we are pursuing for our regional transporation systems in Wisconsin:"Politicians, Planners And Lobbyists Choose Highways Over Rail""Thinking Globally, Forgetting Locally"In his second post, Rowen says:"Southeastern Wisconsin needs more transit, and it needs cleaner air, too - - twin goals, both w

These were taken while driving up the A10 / E22 motorway from Amsterdam en route to Bolsward, Freisland. The drive is only 120 kilometers.
After the Amsterdam suburbs in North Holland the motorway passes through farmlands while bypassing small towns. The Afsluitdijk (dike,) connects Noord Holland to Friesland.

Miles L. Rubin leads a group of car dealers and employees to the parking lot alongside Miles Electric Vehicles’ office in Santa Monica, Calif. He admires the curves of a sedan under a snug-fitting sheet before a marketing executive dramatically whisks off the cover. For all the parking lot hoopla, the much anticipated car is rather nondescript. What’s sexy is inside: Under the hood is
The Low-Tech Times earlier reported on the fuel advantages of railroads vs trucks. Now, work is underway to upgrade rail capacity in Virginia between Front Royal and Manassas. Charlottesville Channel 19 posts the following Associated Press report:
Norfolk Southern spokesman Robin Chapman says that when the work is done later this year, it will [...]
Here in the Midwest, we had one of the worst winters on record. Usually, when it comes to dealing with snowfall and clearing the roads, we’re second to none. We don’t really take pride in that, but we really should. After living in Virginia for two and a half years, I saw [...]
Israeli intelligence has warned that in the interim Hamas and Jihad Islami would make every effort to ignite the Gaza front in order to unite the Arab rulers behind a dramatic Arab resolution in support of the Palestinian Islamists. This tactic would transfer the Gaza issue’s center of gravity from Cairo, which is brokering a Hamas-Israel ceasefire deal, to radical Damascus.Egged on by Syria and Iran, Hamas keeps on stalling this track and raising its demands.the coming Arab League summit will for the first time host an Iranian head of state. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be seated beside Syrian president Bashar Assad as guest of honor to parade the Tehran-Damascus axis’ pre-eminent role in Arab Middle East affairs, with Iran setting the pace. Brandon over on OlympiaFJ60.net has a piece on driving what he calls “Blue Highways” (the secondary highways on the maps), and specifically a loop he recently completed beginning and ending in Yakima and taking him along the Columbia River to Vantage, Ellensburg, and through the Yakima River canyon.
Read the entire trip report at Driving the Blue Highways - Yakima to Vantage to Ellensburg.
Enjoy.
This is the number of tickets given by troopers in Alabama August 13-17, 2007, during their first "Take Back Our Highways" campaign. It was an effort by law enforcement to set the tone for driver safety. They weren't just pulling over speeders either. Troopers were pulling over anyone whose driving could have been reckless or dangerous for other drivers on the road. Lee Hamilton, who has been a pilot for some time now said, "There are those who hate us for what we do. But right now, I think we are making a positive influence for the department. Look at the big picture. We are public servants, and our job is to protect the public. If someone is driving 90 mph down the interstate, other drivers need protection from him, and he needs protection from himself." I guess the big lesson here is that when we are driving we just don't need protection from others; we may also need protection for ourselves.
Comment: A laudable plan but not really the solution for Malaysia. Picture on top is the plan whilst the other picture depicts reality. First and foremost, Malaysian motorists (the four-wheeled kind) have to contend with errant motorcyclists, who think of nothing about weaving in and out of traffic at breakneck speeds. Believe me, I have seen this as I also ride. I have seen motorcyclists, especially those riding under-boned bikes (which is very popular in Malaysia) speeding in excess of 40mph in between cars during traffic jams. Whereas on highways with designated motorcycle lanes, the bikers insist on mixing it with normal traffic. Crazy as it may sound but it is happening. So what is the real solution? To provide the facility is one but the other factor that must be taken into consideration is the fact that the bikers themselves knowingly endanger themselves. Another matter which should be seriously looked is the enforcement factor. Errant bikers get away with it because the police a
By Lexi JewlgiaHave you ever heard the song "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochran? You know, it's the one with the chorus that goes: "Life is a highway / I wanna ride it all night long / If you're going my way / I wanna drive it all night long." I heard that the other day while driving, and it occurred to me that the song suggests a lot about romance.Life's like a road that you travel on,When there's one day here and the next day goneSometimes you bend and sometimes you standSometimes you turn your head to the windIn this song, obviously life is a highway. What then is love? Is it the car you drive, the signs you see, the passenger next to you, or something else? Love affects the quality of your journey down the road of life. People of interest could be the cars going the same way and same speed as you. Love could be the people you "let in" to your vehicle. There's a world outside ev'ry darkened doorWhere blues won't haunt you anymoreWhere brave are free and lovers soarCome ride wit

Here’s a great concept for re-using the wind generated from cars racing on the highways. Great idea! Save earth and peace!
Average vehicle speeds on the valley highways are approximately 70 mph. Using average annual wind speeds of 10 mph as a baseline, each single wind turbine will produce 9,600KwH of energy, annually (enough to fully power my 700 s.f. apartment). This power production estimate will increase exponentially with an increase in wind turbulence speed. I believe that the wind stream created over the freeways by our primary mode of transportation will create an average annual wind speed well beyond the baseline of 10 mph.
