Why: Heathrow Airport Terminal 5’s High Tech Failings [Airport]
London Heathrow airport's latest building, Terminal 5, launched last month after almost two decades of planning, $8.5 billion dollars in cost, and 100 million hours in manpower. It is a glass and concrete and steel marvel, the largest free standing building in the UK, with over 10 miles in suitcase moving belts, and was supposed to be a cure for the Airport's famous congestion by way of massive automation. But on its opening day it just did not work right. This week, British Airways' plans to move its long haul operations from the crowded main terminal to the new terminal were pushed back til June. Much of the press was quick to say that tech was the source of the failings in parking, luggage handling and check in, but here are the details I can find on what exactly caused endless lines an

      Baby Furniture, High Tech?
Being that this is a 'tech blog' why would I talk about baby furniture? Well, I am a new dad now and so when it came time to look for baby cribs I wanted to make sure that I found something functional yet fairly techie as well. What we ended up with was a crib that can convert from a baby to a toddler crib and then to a bed. Not really super high tech as far as the tech world goes but it is a pretty great advancement in baby furniture technology.Of course I am going from the stance that when I was a baby we had the kind of crib that the sides dropped down and the slats were wide apart so any advancements are good one, however I survived and am here today so it didn't hurt me either.

Article : High Tech Talking with VoIP Microphones
By: Frank HarrisThe evolution of communication technology created great attention for a pc peripheral that was once not thought to be a necessary part of computers – the microphone. With the emergence of Voice over Internet Protocol telephones, microphones have become a commodity that is now a necessary component of information technology. Several microphones became available to the general market in the recent years for the main purpose of using them in IP telephony. There are many kinds of microphones that can be used with VoIP phones, here are the popular ones:Desktop Microphones – Also known as omni directional microphones, these ones are situated on a positional boom and are usually installed on top of the desk or the monitor. A great feature they provide is that they can be used hands free because of their great sensitivity. Being omni directional such microphones allow several people to speak at the same time, which can be handy for conferences among groups of people in diff

CaliforniaWaterscapes.com: Backyard Ponds - High Tech or Mother Nature?
In the last article I talked about some of the reasons for the boom in ponds and water features as home improvements, and I promised to give some insights into the technology that has made backyard water features so much less expensive and much easier to look after than in years past. The revolution in pond systems started about a decade ago. This new approach has drastically lowered the maintenance needed for ponds, made them more affordable and owner-friendly while at the same time much more natural looking than any ponds before. To help you understand how these systems work and to help you choose what type of pond would be best for your backyard let's go over some of the basics about ponds and filtering systems. What's Being Filtered in a Pond?A filter is a device for straining substances in suspension from a liquid or gas by passing the liquid or gas slowly through cloth, paper, sand, ceramic tile, charcoal or other porous media. Fuwapica Furniture, in Japan even furniture is "high tech"
An interactive table and chairs that can change colour has been developed by Japanese researchers. On display at the Siggraph show, the Fuwapica furniture uses sensors embedded in the table-top to work out the colour of items placed upon it. The colour of the stools then change to match the colour of whatever has been placed on the sensitive table-top. Sensors in the stools also work out the weight of anyone sat on them - heavier people are treated to darker shades...Read more What do I think of them? Let me see, they look very uncomfortable, they cost between $1500 and $3500...I'm a geek but sorry this time I'll pass, I very much rather this Gundam prototype.

High Tech Training Soccer Ball – Are You the Next Beckham?
Apparently this high tech football (LCD displays are very high tech, don’t you know) will assist you in becoming a superstar player. Frankly we doubt that but, if you are wishing to follow in Beckham’s footsteps this Virtual Soccer Ball has at least one positive side – namely that it doesn’t come with an irritating, self-obsessed wife and, in anyone’s book, that has to be a considerable bonus. As far as improving your skills are concerned, however, the scope of this Virtual Soccer Ball (quite what’s virtual about it is beyond us, but hey) is somewhat limited as it is merely capable of counting how long you can successfully juggle the ball, with the LCD display providing the count. It’s not going to teach you how to dribble, how to successfully tackle your mark, how to take a corner, or anything else for that matter. Then again, it’s not going to spend every hour of every day pouting in front of cameras and calling itself ‘fabulous’ either. The Virtual Soccer Ball r

Google Apps Helps Colleges Go High Tech
Aside from the Library Search Project, one of Google’s “do no evil” educational endeavor is widely gaining popularity - its FREE assistance in modernizing the email systems of schools in the form of Google’s Apps for Education. Google’s Apps for Education allows colleges to dump their often-antiquated e-mail systems and replace them with Gmail, Google’s popular e-mail service. But unlike standard Gmail accounts, schools can maintain their “.edu” addresses, have students log in from school Web sites, brand the system with their own logos and block advertisements that typically appear in standard Gmail accounts. Among the first few schools to benefit from Google Apps include Hope College in Holland, Aquinas College in Grand Rapids. This education program also includes access to Google docs and spreadsheet, Google calendar, and iGoogle. Full report here.   Tags: iGoogle, Google Docs and Spreadsheet, Gmail, Google Apps

High Tech Computer Corp. announces the HTC Touch, the iPhone Rival
High Tech Computer Corp. announced the HTC Touch, a device based on the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 Professional operating system that's designed with one-touch screen features giving users instant access to e-mails, contacts and appointments. The HTC Touch Taiwan's HTC is the largest maker of mobile devices based on Microsoft Windows operating systems, and its use of a 2.8-in. touch screen in the HTC Touch is similar to the emphasis Apple Inc. has put on touch-screen features in its iPhone, which is due on June 29. Come the end of June, come the day of smartphone reckoning, come the dawn of the Apple iPhone media and consumer backlash? Indeed, despite the obvious trend-defined lure of the iPod-compatible iPhone, there is certainly no cast-iron guarantee that critic and consumer alike will embrace Apple’s latest technological offering. So, bearing that in mind, why not consider the sudden left-field appearance of HTC’s tactile alternative, the HTC Touch? Given this week’s

She has released about 2 - 3000 books through the program. And that is the low tech part, you leave books in place so that people can find the free book. the high Tech aspect of this is that you register the book at BookCrossing.com before you release it into the wild and you label it as a free book with the BCID the Book Crossing ID. That way when someone finds your book they can go online and add information about where they found it, where the book is now, if they re released it.
