Why Sleeping is (Almost) More Important Than Breathing I used to pull all-nighters back in college, forcing myself to stay awake to cram for an exam or finish a paper on art history, my major. I did it because I thought it would help me get ahead, but in the end it always set me back—I wound up tired, cranky and unproductive the next day.Even though I've grown up (and wisened up) since then, I still have trouble convincing myself to crawl into bed at night: I keep a running tally of all the things I haven't crossed off my to-do list—reading manuscripts, prepping for a TV appearance, even laundry! And I'm always tempted to stay up just a bit longer to get everything done before morning. So what stops me from burning the midnight oil? Not only has personal experience proved that I'll be m

Believers Happier Than Atheists, Study Claims
In a rather asinine study that somehow claims to measure true happiness, the conclusion reached by Professor Andrew Clark and Dr. Orsolya Leikes in Britain was that people who believe in God are happier than agnostics or atheists.According to them, religious people were better able to cope with disappointments such as unemployment or divorce. Nothing in this study suggests that these people may be using religion as a crutch as a means to avoid dealing with reality that atheists and agnostics choose to deal with on a daily basis. There is also nothing in this study that, perhaps, agnostics or atheists would be a little happier if they didn't have to put up with the inanities of organized religion being forced down their throat day after day.The authors of the study are quoted as saying "Reli

Less is More: 10 Methods to Be More Productive, More Profitable, and Happier
One of the most frustrating paradigms in the modern workplace is that "staying busy" is often substituted for "staying efficient." You can stay busy for eight hours and get very little work done (we all have known coworkers like this) while others can stay efficient and get 2-3 times as much done in half the time. So what makes an efficient person? Well, I would venture to say that being efficient is more about what you "cut out" than what you "add in," although most productivity tips include more of the latter. That said, here are 10 ways that I've found to be helpful in trimming excess waste in my typical freelancing work week. Being More ProductiveCut Out Multitasking. "Multitasking" has become a sacred word in today's workplace. And although it can be a great quality for certain roles

A Happier Teenager Is Worth Any Price
Today was my 15th day in a row going to my job.  I hate my job.  It’s boring and tedious and stressful as hell.  I never knew how many truly hateful people there were in the world until I entered the world of doing customer service or telemarketing.  People will say things to you through the anonyminity provided by the phone that they would never dare to say to another human being in person.  Anyway, today wound up being a short day at work.  On Sundays we do nothing but confirm appointments that our various Doctors have in their Monday schedules.  Today our 7-8 hour day turned into a 5.25 hour day because of too few appointments and overstaffing.  I was more ticked off than pleased as my hours today were overtime and so I lost $40-50.  But, it did have some advantages. After dinner Miss Angst and I played We Love Katamari. It is a favorite game in our house primarily because it is pure silliness and makes us laugh.  And tonight was no exception. If you’ve neve

      Learning How to Be Happier
Happiness seems like such a simple concept, yet so many folks walk around unhappy. We often lose sight of what it actually is. When I was a DoorMat, happiness meant having a good day, not getting hurt, getting attention from someone I thought I needed, or being with a guy I liked and feeling complete for the moment. But that wasn’t real happiness! It was moments of not being unhappy. Who’d have thunk that there would be a need for a whole course on happiness? Many of us need to be taught how to achieve it! How Halloween Can Help You Face Your Fears And Have a Happier Life
“The Halloween Method For Change”Here it is again, that scary and gruesome holiday we call “Halloween”. Yeah, here comes the ghosts, the vampires, the monsters, and all the negative vibes that come along with this last day in October. This being the case, I propose a plan of action - my “Halloween Method For Change” - a method that uses the negative theme and frightfulness of this holiday as a helpful tool in our day-to-day lives. It will turn Halloween into a positve force for personal development, instead of just an entertaining event. Turning A Negative Holiday Into A Positive EventAs we know and love, Halloween is about dressing up in scary costumes and faces and receiving gifts(candy for kids and gifts for adults). I propose that we can utilize the negative faces, dress and horrific nature of this occassion as a catalyst for creating a more positive and less intimidating and fearful existence. How can this be done? Read On. The Method: Using

      He’s Happier, She’s Less So…Why?
A friend of mine sent me an article recently and wanted me to share my thoughts on the subject. “He’s Happier, She’s Less So” is simply about a research study to show who is happy and not happy, and why. In essence the study says that women 30 years ago were generally happier than they are now, and men are happier now than 30 years ago. The reason: with women being so much more prevalent in the work force, the responsibilities of home still sit on her shoulders. The following is a piece of the article… These trends are reminiscent of the idea of “the second shift,” the name of a 1989 book by the sociologist Arlie Hochschild, arguing that modern women effectively had to hold down two jobs. The first shift was at the office, and the second at home… What has changed — and what seems to be the most likely explanation for the happiness trends — is that women now have a much longer to-do list than they once did (including helping their aging pa

Don't buy "bargain" pacts of gift wrap and ribbon without reading the label to see how many feet you are paying for.4. Make some of your own gifts. The thought that goes into something knitted, sewn, cooked or baked is always appreciated.5. Give a gift of service. How about baby sitting for a young mother or doing the marketing for an older friend or relative? A home made "gift certificate" will explain your offer.6. Get together with other members of the family and give a group gift. For example, by going together with your brothers and sisters, you can get your parents something special.7. Instead of individual gifts, consider one present for an entire family maybe a magazine subscription or a selection of fruits and cheeses.8. Conserve energy, even if your house is aglow with lights. How to exend power and data to the desktop and make your users happier
Some time ago I wrote about searching for devices to extend power and data to the desktop - at the time I knew very little about them and said:They are devices a little like trailing sockets but they are designed in a wedgeform factor to sit on a desk surface and contain a socket, lan socket (andsometimes a retractable lan cable), and sometimes a phone socket.I have since found the devices in question, and they are from Powerlogic - the Optima Series. They have a modular nature and components can be clipped into place.Having these devices in place means that users don't have to scrabble about on the floor trying to find power and data sockets to connect to - and also means that none of your important kit gets plugged out when a field based employee needs power or data.

Could This Thought Make You Happier?
I didn't realize I had missed writing an update yesterday...penance for me.Clearly it's been busy around here. I've got a few projects I've been working on for my local copywriter friend, a few emails and quotes to put together for potential new clients on top of my full-time job search ... not to mention taking care of my friend's house and her two mischevious cats...one of which escaped into the backyard the other day. They are NOT outdoor kittens. For the most part though I've been handling the stress fairly well. I have faith that everything will unfold perfectly and fall into place. I am simply and completely committed to my quest for a full-time copywriting job with an ad agency (or something even better!!).Tomorrow I am following up with a friend's contact and meeting for drinks with another local agency contact. It has occurred to me that I have picked a tough market in Denver.Be that as it may I will persevere. If I end up moving somewhere for a kick ass agency and an ev

F has started climbing in and out of her bumpo seat. J has started clapping. I think J has another tooth, but he won’t let me stick my finger in his mouth to see if it has actually broken through the gum yet. The landscape company is out front with a jackhammer removing our old porch as part of our “stop water from running into the house” project and the babies are napping anyway. I can’t nap with the noise, even as tired as I am, but they aren’t bothered by it.

Paul Eaton 04 May 2007Steven Gerrard speaks exclusively to Liverpoolfc.tv about our brilliant victory over Chelsea, the Athens showdown with AC Milan and about the glorious prospect of lifting European football's most glittering trophy for the second time in three seasons.Liverpoolfc.tv: So, Steven, it's AC Milan yet again in a European final.....Obviously I'm really looking forward to it and I'm confident we can go there and bring the Cup back home. They're a fantastic team and we know it's going to be really difficult so we need to be right at the top of our game. What did you make of Milan's display against Manchester United?I was really surprised actually because I had confidence that United would go there and get the result they required. You May Be Happier Than You Think
According to a study by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, and as reported in the Chicago Tribune today, money really can't buy happiness - when it comes to work. The top occupations in job satisfaction?clergyphysical therapistsfirefighterseducation administratorspainters/sculptorsThe bottom occupations in job satisfaction?rooferswaiters/serverslaborers (not construction)bartendershand packers/packagersBut the bigger part of the story, I think, is this: 47% of all workers surveyed said they were "very satisfied" with their work and 33% of all workers reported being "very happy." What that means is this: If the person next to you isn't "very satisfied," or the two people on either side of you aren't "very happy," chances are that you are!And isn't that a nice thing to realize?!

Using Vastu Shastra to Make Your Pets Healthier and Happier
Pets are family members and should be treated as such. The design of your home has a dramatic affect on their health and well-being. When your environment is in harmony with nature, it will have a positive influence. If not, behavioral and health problems will show up in your animals in subtle and not so subtle ways. By applying the environmental science of Vastu Shastra, you can create harmony and balance in your home that will support your pets. Vastu Shastra was written some 7,000-10,000 years ago in India by rishis, or men of great wisdom. Over a period of thousands of years, these wise scholars studied and chronicled the strong influence that the physical environment has on all living things. Through these observations, an exact science was formulated, which established the principles behind some of the world's most enduring structures. My wife and I have experienced firsthand the benefits that some simple corrections using Vastu can have on pets. Our dog had a variety of skin
