Greenhouse gardening is a great choice for those who desires to garden in all four seasons.
A greenhouse is an enclosed construction with transparent walls that provides controlled environmental conditions required for a healthy plant growth.
Greenhouse gardening is much similar to outdoor gardening.
The only difference is that the gardener of the greenhouse needs to [...]
Choice of greenhouse is considerable. The standard is the barn shaped wooden framed span roof kind with half walls of brick and swing doors. Nowadays there are also metal framed houses, glazed to ground level with sliding doors, 3/4 span lean-tos and ordinary lean-tos for house or other walls, usually with brick half walls. Here [...]
Yesterday I started reading Isaac Asimov's Foundation. In the first chapters I sensed that the author had an ecological perspective on things so I googled around a bit on Asimov and found this 1977 audio clip from CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks in which Isaac Asimov tells us about the greenhouse effect and how it could be warming up the Earth. He also explains why we should care. "This greenhouse e
WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration, dismissing the recommendations of its top experts, rejected regulating the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming Friday, saying it would cripple the U.S. economy.
In a 588-page federal notice, the Environmental Protection Agency made no finding on whether global warming poses a threat to people's health or welfare, reversing an earlier conclusion at

The fart mostly consists of a gas called Methane, which happens to be 23 times easier to trap heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. One of the most fart producing living beings on this planet is the cow, which produces 800-1,000 litres of gas every day! Considering that Argentina alone has 55 million [...]
Q. To what extent the sea level would rise if all the icecaps in the world melt due to the global warming?A. No one knows for sure, but some estimates have been made and they are largely focused on Antarctica. The Arctic on the other end is not a major cause of worry, because there is no icecap as such and its ice floats on the Arctic Ocean. If it is melted, the sea levels would not be affected. I

Scientists in New Zealand claim to have developed a livestock inoculation that can stop the methane gas from emanating from burps and flatulence, according to the article. Livestock is responsible for almost half of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. So humans with all their cars and power-hungry lifestyles can’t compete with sheep? Amazing.

I'm just about to go to work, so this will be a bit of a combined quick hit post. Not so long ago I posted my annoyance with somewhat backwards, in my view, behaviour regarding environment and health. As I was doing my news rounds today, I came across this piece on ways beyond the old changing light bulbs in order to reduce GHG emissions:Using a spring-driven clock instead of an electric prevents 4
Methane gas produced by ungulates such as cattle, goats, and sheep may be controlled through vaccination. The vaccine was developed by New Zealand scientists that claim it can control flatulent emissions, which act as greenhouse gas emissions. It is either the development of technologies like the vaccine to control the problem or a possible flatulence tax for New Zealand farmers. Read more here

Winning the war on global warming requires slaughtering some of environmentalism's sacred cows. We can afford to ignore neither the carbon-free electricity supplied by nuclear energy nor the transformational potential of genetic engineering. We need to take advantage of the energy efficiencies offered by urban density. We must accept that the world's fastest-growing economies won't forgo a higher

Greenhouse supplies come in handy if you have a greenhouse. Some of these supplies are helpful and others are crucial. Water is a greenhouse supply that falls into the second category. If you have a greenhouse you will need to have a way to water the plants and flowers. Here are some options you can consider and ones to avoid when watering your greenhouse plants. The best way to water the plants in your greenhouse is the old-fashioned way - with a garden hose. By hand watering, you can give each plant the individual attention it needs. This way plants that dry out faster than others will get watered as they need it without overwatering the other plants. Watering each plant individually does take a fair amount of time each day. Some of us have the time and experience great pleasure in nurtur
For people who would like to do more gardening but live in a short growing season area, a hobby greenhouse is the answer. A hobby greenhouse is not large enough to produce vegetables or flowers on a commercial basis. It will, however, give you a place for a tomato plant or two and some fresh greens even if you live in the northern regions. Greenhouse enthusiasts even have their own association, called the Hobby Greenhouse Association, which publishes a quarterly magazine. The organization also sponsers events and helps individuals connect to get help with the aspect of gardening that they are interested in, whether it's growing cacti or saving seeds. If you are in the market for a hobby greenhouse, there are several types on the market. The smallest type is not large enough to walk into

If you haven't already, now is the time to get the garden greenhouse in order and start the season off right. The greenhouse may need a little sprucing up. This is one of those times when you need to make sure the greenhouse has a thorough cleaning. You should also check everything in the greenhouse to make sure it is in working order. You may have unexpected maintenance but if you go over the entire greenhouse now, t

Set in the year 2022, Soylent Green depicts a dystopian future in which the population has grown to forty million in New York City alone. We receive light and heat from the sun. It should be noted that one third of the rays of the sun are reflected back to the universe and only two third of the rays are actually absorbed by the Earth which warms the land. Much of this heat is radiated out into space and some of it is stored in the atmosphere. This is called the Greenhouse effect. This effect makes life on Earth possible. Without it, the Earth's temperature would've been too chilling for us to survive. "Global warming" refers to the rise in the Earth's temperature resulting from an increase in heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere. Two major sources which contribute to Global Warming:- Use of fossil fuels and Deforestation.
Large areas of the world already suffer from drought while deserts and populations increase in size. Demand for fresh water has doubled in the last 20 years and as demand outstrips renewable supply, the depletion of ground water is accelerated.
Agriculture accounts for 70% of fresh water used globally. This percentage is often higher in regions that suffer from chronic water shortages. In the Middle East and North Africa, for example, up to 90% of available water is used in agriculture.

Here are some tips to help you grow amazingly healthy plants in your greenhouse for profit or pleasure:Fertilizers:If you use cloth, it can be placed outside as well as inside for cooling and shading. In fact any type of shading used outside, but with an air space between the shading and the glass, will help you operate your greenhouse more economically. Most growing plants need fertilizing at least twice a month. Liquid fertilizing is very popular. Some growers dilute fertilizer )i or % recommended strength and then give it at weekly intervals. Apply fertilizer to moist soil, for if the soil is dry, the chemical may burn feeder roots and cause a setback.Types of Plant FoodThere are many brands of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the market. If you prefer an organic type, I suggest fish emulsion, Ovene (a stick form of concentrated sheep manure), or liquid manure. You can prepare liquid manure by placing a half bushel of cow manure in a burlap bag and steeping it in a half tub of wa

Different Types Of Greenhouse. After you decide that you want to build a greenhouse, you have to decide next what type to build. This should not be a difficult one to address, provided you know what kinds of plants you want to grow. You will need to answer questions such as:What will my greenhouse be principally used for?Do I want a large or small greenhouse? Will the greenhouse be the main attraction of my garden? Is my garden exposed to strong winds? Are there young children or wild animals in the area?Polyvinyl chloride (PVC or Vinyl) - like polyethylene, PVCs are soft and flexible. You can have transparent ones. Vinyl costs two to five times more than polyethylene. When properly installed, they can last as long as five years. Because it attracts dust and dirt from the air, it has to be washed from time to time.So as not to mislead you, while there may be different types of greenhouse designs, we're talking about the same greenhouse. You get to decide which type you want it to be.For e
Another week gone! Here is the latest painting I have finished for The House of Puzzles. It's 28" x 20" and as with all of the jigsaws, it is a very busy scene with lots of little details to keep puzzlers happy. (Hopefully). As yet untitled, but thankfully that isn't my job!As an aside, one thing I have learnt from this painting is that I really don't like Fabriano paper at all. Since I already knew this, quite why I decided to buy 10 sheets of it a while back is anyone's guess. But I thought I'd give it a go since its here; sadly it just made a tricky painting harder and I won't be using it again. Ever! If there are any fans of it out there (and someone must like it) you can have the remaining sheets for the cost of postage if you get in touch...I will be sticking with Arches, Saunders and Two Rivers. Rant over, and back to the pigeons.
Nobody does greenhouse gas better than Greenpeace, or so they say. So imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth in Berlin, figuratively speaking of course, when a study of theirs has indicated that Germany will “miss by miles” its ambitious plans to reduce its share of these gases by 40 percent.
The study indicates that the current government plan can reduce emissions by 30 percent at the very most, and this primarily due to Germany’s equally ambitious plans to simultaneously increase its already large and dirty coal-burning power plant network.
The German Ministry for the Environment rejected the results of the study as being “nicht nachvollziehbar” (incomprehensible). Incomprehensible? Building more coal-burning power plants means producing more greenhouse gas? I don’t see what’s so incomprehensible about that. But, then again, I’m not an expert.
No one at the ministry was available for comment at the moment because half the building is on emergency leave in orde
I saw on an episode of the "Colbert Report" that a few years ago, 2005 or 2006, greenhouse gas emissions were down from the previous year. Colbert attributed this to higher oil prices lowering demand for gas, and our government's hesitation to correct the aftermath of wild weather like Katrina. To me, the fact that we got a "good" result while taking little action as a nation means that when we finally do get into full-swing with the "War on Global Warming," we'll be able to make some major progress.Good news, I think.
It is always best to see some form of response to all efforts poured in the climate change issue. Greenhouse gas emissions are among the things for consideration and control and with the latest report coming from Canada with regards to the decline in gas emissions should be a big sigh of relief.
Now some people consider this as too soon and not a cause to celebrate. Remember, Canada is just one country. What about the others? It is by far no means to stop the joint efforts of controlling gas emissions. There is still a long road ahead to cover and wise people from the green movement groups know this very well.

If you are looking to get the best results of your gardening year round, you may be considering a greenhouse. They are a great way to control the climate the plants are kept in. You may be happy to learn the practice is not that hard to learn and use successfully. The first thing you need to begin greenhouse gardening, is the green house of course. Many home improvement or gardening stores have simple structures that can be purchased. These units are fairly simple but perfect for the beginner. The structure itself will protect the plants and shrubs from outside elements and allow you to care for them as they require. The main feature of a greenhouse is the ability to control the temperature. This prevents the plants from having any ill effects from the fall in temperatures in your area. Your greenhouse should be outfitted with the proper heating elements to make this possible and easy to control. Many common solutions are space heaters or heat lamps.Depending upon the size of your greenh
For those of you looking to expand your gardening hobby, or those of you that wish to grow fruits, vegetables, or flowers in a climate that typically makes growing difficult, greenhouse gardening may be the hobby for you. Greenhouse vegetable gardening is becoming growing in popularity as greenhouses are now very economical, available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and can allow you to enjoy gardening in even the smallest of locations all year long. What Is a Greenhouse?A greenhouse is simply a structure with a glass, or perhaps a plastic roof, and also generally has glass or plastic walls as well. When located in a sunlit location the solar radiation heats the structure and the air warmed in this manner is retained in the building. The glass used works as a selective transmission medium for different spectral frequencies, which has the effect of trapping the energy within, which in effect heats both the plants and the ground inside. Greenhouses thus work by trapping electromagn

Forget about what you are seeing and the various comments, reports and articles going around about green gas emissions. It is a well-known fact that this is a world issue that should not be taken lightly. As each year passes, the greenhouse gas issue becomes more serious and even if we do hear about individual efforts to help fight off this impending global disaster, the fact remains, the effort is simply not enough.
It has indeed reached dangerous levels and unless something drastic would be undertaken, chances are it will go beyond dangerous and perhaps catastrophic. Now that is not a good sign for all of us inhabitants.
“We thought we’d be at that threshold within about a decade,” Flannery told Australian television late on Monday.
“We thought we had that much time. But the new data indicates that in about mid-2005 we crossed that threshold,” he said.
“What the report establishes is that the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is already
We in the United States — and we as global citizens — live in what is, in many respects, a golden moment. Economic growth is globally strong, and, if security threats can be contained, this expansion, with some ups and downs, can be sustained.Strong growth means increased use of energy at a pace that can strain the capacity to supply what is needed at a reasonable price. This highlights two urgent questions: how to use energy without producing excess greenhouse gases that create disruptive conditions on a global scale; and how to reduce the threat to national security from excess dependence on oil.
Are you looking for greenhouse plans so that you can give your seedlings a head start in the spring? Would you like to create a warm environment where you can keep your pot plants and hanging baskets during the winter? And how about growing your own organic vegetables? All of this can be achieved in a greenhouse.Just as if you were building a house, if you want to build a controlled environment for your plants you'll need to start with greenhouse plans. There is more to a greenhouse than piping and polypropylene and this needs to be taken into account in your greenhouse plans. As you start to plan your greenhouse you'll start with the size. This may well be determined by the available space and the amount of sunlight in your garden. Once you know the external measurements for your greenhouse, you can decide on the height of the walls and the shape of the roof. Now that you have an idea of the design you can fill in the details of your greenhouse plan. The majority of greenhouses are er

Are you just sitting there imagining all the lush flowers or delicious fruits and vegetables that will soon be grown by none other than you? Some lumber and gardening stores may have them or you may have a contractor in the area who could build a greenhouse exactly to your specifications. Sound good? These options may be fine but there are advantages to buying greenhouse kits online. For one, you can take your time and read all about the features and benefits of each greenhouse. With the internet, companies have lots of room to post testimonials, frequently asked questions, and pictures. If the company has a catalog, request a copy of their greenhouse catalog. A catalog has a different format then a web page and sometimes seeing the product presented in a different w
When you own a greenhouse and work with greenhouse accessories on a regular basis you will want to make sure you keep the greenhouse and the greenhouse accessories clean as part of your regular greenhouse upkeep. If you want to keep your greenhouses and greenhouse accessories in good shape you will want to clean everything periodically. This will help keep your plants and flowers healthy and strong. When greenhouse gardeners neglect this area of gardening they are courting disaster. You need a healthy environment to prevent pests and diseases from taking over the greenhouse. Start by planning a major cleaning effort of the greenhouse and all greenhouse supplies at least once a year. Get rid of all greenhouse accessories that are not in good shape. One of the best times to schedule this cleaning is right before spring sowing. This will get your growing efforts off to a good start. Another time to clean the greenhouse and the greenhouse accessories is in early autumn. You will be returni

Like in business, the drive towards an aggressive realization of facts that greenhouse gases have been rampantly affecting both human and natural habitats should be given emphasis and focus. The whole problem right now is educating people on what greenhouse gas issues are all about. Some have been doing their share but it is simply not enough.
The real problem thus lies on how to make people all over the world aware of the green dilemma. Many hear about greenhouse gas issues but have no idea on how to control or avoid contributing to the mess.
Media elements may be good and possibly focusing more on it in the way that the war on terrorism has been done may be a good move. Thus the whole awareness building is left towards the proper duties of the people themselves; with the regional leaders showing the way.

Greenhouses are buildings made to grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers. They store heat that the sun produces and creates a warm setting for your plants. The buildings have glass or plastic walls and roof. The frame can be made of metal, wood, or plastic. Greenhouses come in a variety of sizes. They can also be built in many different locations. The first greenhouses were built in Italy in the sixteenth century. The purpose of the greenhouse was to store exotic plants from around the world and keep them alive. An environment needed to be created in Italy that the plants were used to. Thanks to many of the trial and errors they experienced in the sixteenth century we are now able to have greenhouses. This idea soon spread around the world. When choosing the size of your greenhouse, consider what your needs are. If it is for a hobby a smaller greenhouse close to the home would do fine. The more plants that you want to grow in the greenhouse the bigger the greenhouse you will need. Make s

There are some greenhouse accessories that you can live without. Some of these items could even be considered luxuries and are used mostly to enhance the greenhouse. Shelving and greenhouse benches are greenhouse accessories that are necessary for gardeners to make the best use of their greenhouse space. Shelving is generally something that you attach to the interior of your greenhouse walls or they lay on top of built in framing. These are not the same things as greenhouse benches, which are free standing and can be moved throughout the greenhouse. Benches and shelving do have some things in common. Both can help you organize the greenhouse. Making good decisions concerning the use of these greenhouse accessories will allow you to function efficiently while you are gardening. Shelving and benches are used in combination to give the gardener choices as far as working, storing things and providing areas for the flowers and plants. You can use benches and shelving for growing plants, flo
There are many reasons to buy a greenhouse. You may want to extend the growing season or be able to start the growing season a bit earlier than your zone will allow. With an insulated greenhouse, you can start seedlings much earlier outdoors. If you heat your greenhouse, you can have well established plants to put in your garden by the last frost. This means you can get an earlier harvest in the summer. Container plants that are kept in the greenhouse or moved into the greenhouse in the fall, can keep producing fruit and greens longer into the fall. Maybe you have always wanted to experiment with propagating or growing specialty plants and flowers, like tropicals, that will need extra care and can't be grown properly where you live. With a greenhouse, you can control the environment to allow you to grow just about anything your heart desires. You also might be interested in starting a business venture with a greenhouse. You can grow growing bedding plants, cut flowers, herbs or vegeta
Yesterday the Electric Power Research Institute and the National Resources Defense Council released a comprehensive assessment which found that widespread use of plug-in electric vehicles (PHEV) could be expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve ambient air quality.
The 3 key findings:
By 2050, 450 million tons less greenhouse gas would be produced.
The power grid can handle it: assuming a 60% market share of these vehicles, they will only use 7 - 8% of the grid’s power
By 2050, 3-4 million barrels per day less oil will be consumed
Here is the official press release.

The event in Washington, was attended by Tony Pozawatz, GM Volt Vehicle Line Chief. He confirmed GM’s commitment to building the Volt, but was still vague on release date and cost.
It is this author’s opinion that this study is extremely important, because of concerns that using cars like the Volt would simply shift CO2 generation from the c
The best way to understand where greenhouse gas comes from is through symbols such as balloons. Greenhouse gases are emitted in droves of millions each day and a lot of them originate from our excessive use of energy.
We can cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. We just have to start by doing our part and conserve energy today wherever we may be.

Two of Spain’s regional governments and its capital city plan to plant millions of trees to help offset the impact of the country’s spiralling greenhouse gas emissions, environment officials said on Thursday.
Spain is allowed an increase of 15 percent in its carbon dioxide emissions but the government estimates that it will be facing one of 37 percent in the 2008-12 period. It aims to offset 20 percentage points of that via United Nations-approved clean energy projects in developing countries, and a further 2 points by planting trees.
Some of the country’s regional and local governments are leading the way.
Castilla-La Mancha, an extensive, rural region on Spain’s central plain, has already increased its forested area by 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) to 5 million hectares, its Environment Councillor told in a conference.
It now plans to plant 20 million trees in the next four yea
Mahalo Greenhouse is a new human search engine where people contribute so it can be one the best Internet search engines. As you can see, its a new project and needs a little bit of tweaking, because of the low content in some topics…
What if this search engine pays you for doing his work? It sounds like that, and it is like that ;). If your search is accepted by Mahalo team, the search will move to Mahalo. Everyone can work for them, there are no restrictions and they will pay you 10$-15$ per accepted search.

The kids were desperate to get their hands into some gardening yesterday, and I was only too happy to oblige. Our youngest boy had obtained some directions for making a mini-greenhouse from a milk bottle and had been bugging me all week to help him with it.
I finally had some free time yesterday and the recycling bin hadn't been emptied so we had a few spare bottles on hand.
Step 1
We started by cutting the bottom third of a 2L plastic milk bottle (you could use any plastic bottle) and added some potting mix to a knuckle length below the rim.
Step 2
Once the soil was in, it was time to sow the seeds. The boys decided to plant some chive seeds and the girls opted for coriander. Both seeds had been collected from our herb garden at the end of last season.
They scattered a few seeds on top of the soil and then lightly pressed them. Another layer of soil was then used to cover the seeds and then a final moisture add.
Step 3
The final step in the project is to fit the top po

California has said today that they will sue the United States Government if they blocked efforts to cut greenhouse gas-causing emissions from their vehicles. California Attorney General Jerry Brown said at an Environmental Protection Agency hearing the President Bush’s administration is working with oil industries to confuse the state’s plans.
Brown also said that the federal law gives California the right to set their vehicle emission standards, as long as they are more strict than national law, and that other states were allowed to adopt California’s emissions standards.
In 2002 California passed a legislation that requires automakers to reduce emissions 30 percent by 2016. However, for this legislation to take effect, California is going to have to get a waiver from the EPA, which as of now has not been forthcoming. Brown said, “Our waiver request has been pending for a year and a half, which is an unreasonable delay.”
Brown also said, “Our
If you really want to spite your gardening friends, install a greenhouse in your backyard. Even if your intention isn't to upset them, it inevitably will be the resulting outcome. Why? Because every gardener wants one.
Don't they?
I know I do. In fact, if I had just a little more room there would be a greenhouse featuring prominently in my backyard. Alas, as with all things there is an economic cost to consider. Do I forego the backyard aquaponics and vegetable garden? Should I resist adding a chicken coop? And, can I really do without a potting shed? Nuh!
Therefore, the reason I don't have (or will have - in the short term anyhow!) a greenhouse is the limited space in which to house one. And while this might also be the reason for others not having one some may claim that they can't afford one.
Well, I'm here to inform you that cost is no longer a barrier. Building your own greenhouse is accessible for less than a few hundred bucks.

Feeling Hot Hot Hot ...
Down at the allotment it’s all go at this time of year ... throughout March we’re had a mega planting time with early bedding plants and root crops being sown in seed trays and plug trays.
Without the luxury of electric at the allotment ... and being your typical ‘mean’ gardener when it comes to spending money we’ve created a hot greenhouse for giving our seeds a quick and healthy start to life and then transfer them off into our polytunnel ...
We keep one of our 6’ x 6’ glass greenhouses hot by heating it with a single burner paraffin heater.
It’s costing us about £12 a week in paraffin to keep this area hot enough to germinate our seeds as well as give some of our larger plants a spurt of growth ...
Although this may sound quite a lot for such a small area, we know we won’t need to keep the greenhouse to such high temperatures for much longer (hopefully the weather will start to improve) plus ...
we’ve absolutely jammed this
Good News: The US Supreme Court ruled Monday that the Environmental Protection Agency must consider greenhouse gases as pollutants, in a blow to the White House. "Because greenhouse gases fit well within the Clean Air Act's capacious definition of 'air pollutant' we hold that EPA has the statutory authority to regulate the emission of such gases from new motor vehicles," the court ruled. Led by Massachusetts, a dozen states along with several US cities and environmental groups went to the courts to determine whether the agency had the authority to regulate greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide emissions. "The harms associated with climate change are serious and well recognized," said judge John Paul Stevens as the ruling was carried by five votes in favor to four against. The Republican administration of US President George W. Bush has fiercely opposed any imposition of binding greenhouse limits on the nation's industry.
Deforestation, which releases a significant number of carbon dioxide, has put Indonesia as the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the United States and China, a report released Friday said.According to the report, titled "Indonesia and Climate Change" and published by the World Bank and the British government, yearly emissions in Indonesia from energy, agriculture and waste all together are around 451 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e). "Yet, land-use change and forestry alone is estimated to release about 2,563 MtCO2e," the report said.
What is greenhouse effect? The rise in the atmospheric temperature caused by greenhouse gases allowing incoming solar radiation to pass through the earth atmosphere and preventing outgoing radiation from surface or lower atmosphere to escape in the space. It contributes to around 60 degrees Fahrenheit more than the normal for sustainability on earths life and counterbalancing energy.
You can find lots of definition in the internet for greenhouse effect and all of them are pointing into the same principle with some broader explanation on the subject. As an excerpt like the effect of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere or warming of the atmosphere by trapping the long wave radiation being radiated to space.
Gov. Schwarzenegger Signs Executive Order Establishing World's First Low Carbon Standard for Transportation Fuels, FULL STREAMING VIDEOWorld's first Greenhouse Gas Standard for transportation fuels will reduce dependence on oil, boost clean technology industry in California and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Continuing his historic leadership to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and lower California's reliance on foreign oil, Governor Schwarzenegger signed an Executive Orderestablishing a groundbreaking Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) for transportation fuels sold in California. By 2020 the standard will reduce the carbon intensity of California's passenger vehicle fuels by at least 10 percent. This first-of-its kind standard will support AB 32 emissions targets as part of California's overall strategy to fight global warming."Like the rest of the nation, California relies excessively on oil to meet its transportation needs. In fact, 96 percent of our transportation fuel is
