Armed with a power trimmer I'm taking on the hill, cutting the grass, preparing for some civilized landscaping. I've started on top of the hill and will be working my way down. Vigorous raking will keep me fit this summer. Also, need to find more spots to hide the mounts of cut grass. This was obviously a mistake, tall rye grass is not appealing and looks like a bad hair due after rain.

WHAT TO DO WITH GRASS CLIPPINGS
When the days are at their longest, some of us with large expanses of grass tend to start sinking under the vast quantities of clippings produced. The simplest way to deal with them is to just leave them on the lawn. There is even a phrase known as "grass cycling" to make us feel less lazy when it comes to dealing with the problem. The grass clippings soon rot down and are a natural feed. This sav

      Green Grass
So far this spring our grass seems to be doing VERY well. Last year (first growing season for the new lawn) the lawn just never really grew very well. It wasn't very green, didn't grow very fast and overall seemed to be struggling to stay alive. So last fall we had our soil tested and found out that our soil was very acidic and lacking in some important nutrients that grass needs to grow well. The biggest thing our soil needed was lime in order to "sweeten" the soil and increase the pH. We also had to choose the correct fertilizer based on the soil report.I think the combination of the lime and fertilizer that we applied has worked wonders for the grass. As you can see it's very green and it appears to be growing in much thicker. I'm hoping that the lawn will establish itself much better th

If you do have to seed in the spring, you should do so as soon as the ground thaws. The roots need time to gain strength before the weather gets too hot. In the summer, grass has do deal with dry conditions, hot weather, and competition with weeds. It is tough for it to try to begin growing in these conditions. If you don’t seed in the fall, and miss the early spring window, you should make a temporary lawn out of rye grass until you can make your permanent lawn in the fall.
