Graphics card, chipset release dates rounded up - The INQUIRER: "SO THE RELEASE DATES are flying around, moving backwards and forwards, but this is how we stand currently, as of this morning. We think: RV670 aka the Radeon HD 2950: November 19 (formerly 15). RD790 aka the Radeon Express 790FX: November 20 (formerly 5) RX780 aka the AMD 770: November 20 (formerly 5) G92 aka the GeForce 8800 GT: October 29 (formerly November 12) C72 aka the nForce 780i: November 12 C73 aka the nForce 790i: January (formerly December) C72P aka the nForce 750i: November 12 Also watch out for AMD variants (MCP72 and MCP72P) of the 780 chipset on November 12. C73 is notable as it includes support for DDR3. As it stands, the launches are mostly a week apart, with the 8800 GT coming in a little sooner. However, these are all subject to change, as embargos (and journalists) get pushed around at the whim of their PR masters. Look out for the glut of NDA-signers come launch day."
Graphics cards are usually a fairly simple upgrade to your personal computer, only requiring a small screwdriver to open the case and replace or add the card. The hard part is determining which one, though, as there are many different types available, many of which can be found on eBay Australia, both new and secondhand. In order of oldest to newest, they are split into PCI, AGP and PCI Express connections. This guide is written to help you find which card is suitable for your computer, and what features are available so that you know what to look for.
Why upgrade?
Graphic cards help take the load off the main processor and take care of what is displayed to you. The most common uses are for gaming and video display, but they are also used in specialised areas like engineering and computer aided design. Because of their different purposes and that they are effectively another computer on a card, they vary in their connection type, the type of connectors available, processing power, mem

If you are going to be gaming then yes, definitely. Games make heavy use of the graphics processing unit, so if you have a lot of money to spend on a good graphics card (or a new computer), get the best one you can get your hands on. Even better, get at least a dual core computer since many good games these days make use of both processing cores. The same is true for 3d graphics applications as well, they also make heavy use of the graphics card and processor. If you are a regular home user who checks their e-mail and surfs the 'net then there isn't any reason to really worry about getting a better graphics card, as it will go fairly unused anyways. Some last minute notes:Gamers - Get best card you can get. Period. Better yet, get the best computer you can get.3d graphics artists - Same as above.2d graphics artists (Photoshop and such) - Generally 2d graphics optimizations are done on the operating system side of things, so the graphics card will have little effect on this. Well, I was in the middle of a game of World of Warcraft (as usual) the other day, when my screen went blank and displayed, "RGB No Input Signal", I just thought that the cable had been disconnected or that I had hit the off switch, but that was all snug. I then restarted the computer and the screen regained conciousness, so I thought nothing more of it, until I started World of Warcraft again, and as soon as the game opened into full screen (after pressing Play) the screen did exactly the same.I again, checked the cables, restarted and this time did not load anything, I waited around 1 minute and the screen went dead.
