Grapes – Good Things Come in Bunches
Photo courtesy of Flauto How many times have you sat down to watch TV and wanted a snack? Or the late night munchies? What’s the first thing you grab? If you didn’t answer grapes, you’re missing out. They’re easy to prepare and eat. Plus, they taste great, too. The grape is one of the oldest fruits to be cultivated, going back as far as biblical times. Spanish explorers introduced the fruit to America over 300 years ago. Grapes are eaten fresh, made into preserves or canned in jellies, dried into raisins, or crushed for juice or wine. Look for firm, plump, well-colored clusters of grapes that are securely attached to their green stems. Fully ripe grapes are soft and tender. Grapes showing signs of decay, shriveling, stickiness, brown spots or dry brittle stems should be avoided. I

'The Grapes of Wrath' - A Study in Detail (Part II)
(Part I – see previous post) Steinbeck in this epoch-making novel ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ has also described the concept of ‘oversoul’. Many philosophers and men of religion, not only in America but also in other parts of the world, have expressed their belief that there is an ‘oversoul’ of which all human beings are parts. In ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ this idea has been given a practical shape when the Joad family, after many deaths and separations, realizes that the only way of being happy in this world is to love others like oneself and help them as far as possible. Steinbeck has Casy rephrase Emerson’s concepts of the Oversoul and self-reliance. He helps unite the prisoners in California jail when they effectively protest against the sour food there and his death during

The Grapes of Wrath is a strongly sustained social and political narrative that provides and accurate and faithful description of a critical period in American history. The novel is a post-depression novel and the writer John Steinbeck’s epic masterpiece of social consciousness in its picture of helpless people crushed by drought and depression. The novel is usually described as a novel of social protest, for it exposes the desperate conditions under which one group of American workers, the migratory farm families, was forced to live during 1930s.In the depths of the greatest economic depression these people had to abandon their homes and their livelihoods. They were uprooted and set adrift because tractors were rapidly industrializing the Southern cotton fields and because erosion and d

      'The Grapes of Wrath'
‘The Grapes of Wrath’, one of the landmarks in not only American fiction but also in world literature. It was written by John Steinbeck in 1939. It was one of the post-depression novels of Steinbeck. The economic depression of 1930, had taken heavy toll by the means of mass unemployment and migration, of people from eastern to south-western parts, in large numbers. The author has, in this novel, narrated the impact of that depression on socio-economic life of poor people. ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ is thus, chiefly a long panorama of suffering and misery of Joad family, who, like thousands of others, migrated to California in the south-west. Steinbeck has used a number of symbolic allusions including the title – ‘The Grapes of Wrath’.The title has been borrowed from the song ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’ written by Julia Ward Howe. The ‘grapes’ here are symbolic – they may be sour as well as sweet. While the sour grapes are unpalatable, the sweet ones are liked b

The Grapes Are Here! The Grapes Are Here!
Well, readers and drinkers, harvest has officially begun. We received Syrah grapes from the Rominger Vineyard in Yolo County and the England-Shaw Vineyard in Solano County. They are now crushed and nestled in open-top tanks awaiting punch down’s. I tired to get some action shots, but the cellar guys are too quick for me. Although Associate Winemaker John Kane promised (threatened?) to put on his speedo the next time I bring my camera over… What you see there are stems and what was passed over from the Rominger. harvest, Rosenblum Cellars harvest

      Snails with Grapes.....Uh?
The longer I live in France, the more I realize that all Pains aux raisins are NOT created equal here. Take for example, the Pains aux raisins in Burgundy. Oftentimes in France, you’ll come across many examples where a French region has adulterated changed a staple food of France, even naming it something different to suit its own tastes (and specialities) and to fight for their own regional culinary culture.Burgundy is known for a few things: its wine, its food, usually consisting of lots of wine: Coq au vin, which is chicken in wine, Boeuf Bourgignon, which is beef cooked in wine, Pochouse, a dish with 4 kinds of fish cooked in wine, Andouillette au chablis, which are sausages cooked in wine, Oeufs en meurettes, an interesting spin on eggs that are poached in wine, Les Tripes au Rosé de Marsannay, which is tripe cooked in wine. Are we seeing a pattern here? I think I now know why the people here are so friendly and happy.Anyway - probably most famous of all foods from Burgundy is

      Champagne Grapes Shaved Ice
Few years ago, there was this craze about shaved ice drinks in Singapore. If I remember correctly, it was bought in from Taiwan. Although, the shaved ice drinks 'trend' had died down, we are still able to see these stalls in some shopping centers but selling at a much cheaper price. They used essences and syrup for the drinks but if we do it at home we can use the real fruit or fruit juice.Few days ago I happened to see these really tiny grapes in the supermarket and I bet the kids would love it and so I bought home a box. They are called Champagne Grapes. And just how tiny are they? The size of a pea! Too cute!I wanted to used some for baking but just couldn't find the time. So before they turned bad, I used them to make shaved ice for dessert. Eat it or drink it. You decide.Ingredients:250g Champagne Grapes300ml Water sweeten with sugar to tasteHow to do it:Blend the grapes with water.Filter juice.Pour juice into a flat shallow pan/dish.Refrigerate in the freeze.Bring the pan out

Concord Grapes May Protect Against Breast Cancer
Every three minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer . While factors like age and heredity contribute significantly to a woman’s likelihood of contracting this disease, lifestyle and nutrition choices may also play a role. One dietary choice that may help provide protection against breast cancer is a glass of 100 percent grape juice made from deep purple Concord grapes. Eurekalert August 9, 2007

      The Grapes of Math
I’ve written about Enologix here before. Their service purports to help you make wine that will score better with influential gatekeepers like Parker and the Wine Spectator. It is veiled in secrecy (very few producers own up to using it, though reports indicate that Enologix has approx. 50-60 clients) and it costs around 20K a year to use their service. Recently Leo McCloskey was interviewed over at Appellation America by Alan Goldfarb. One of the more humorous moments from the interview, from my perspective at least, is when McCloskey tells Appellation America that appellations, AA’s reason for existing, are pretty much worthless to consumers as indicators of quality. The AVA smackdown follows. “When you hear AVA, you just think — vanilla. It doesn’t have any color to it and depth. … The AVA won’t tell you where the highest-priced wines come from within the AVA because the producer of the lowest quality product in the AVA wants to cover up (that) fact. The tr

U.K. Bureaucrats Stomp on Stores Selling Great Grapes by the Sip
Most of us could never afford to buy a bottle of Petrus 1996 for $1,925, but we might be willing to fork over $65 for a sip to be able to say we have tried the wine. That was the idea behind a program at a number of retail shops in the United Kingdom that allowed consumers the chance to try some of the world's great vintages a 25 milliliter sip at a time. That at least was the case before Trading Standards Officers from the Westminster City Council stepped in.Selfridges and The Sampler had been running the program. The bureaucrats, however, declared that the stores were "selling wine in illegal amounts" and ordered the retailers to halt the programs. "Illegal amounts" sounds like they were selling huge quantities at low prices to underage drinkers, not offering consumers a chance to sample upscale wines.Trading standards officers point to a law that says licensed premises must sell wine in either 125 milliliter or 175 milliliter glasses. Obvious, this law was created to help protect co

Did You Know That Champagne Comes From Three Different Grapes? - By Gregg Hall
By Gregg Hall Champagne has always been a way to celebrate or toast the bride and groom in marriage. Seen to be a flexible drink, Champagne can be with a meal or dessert. Champagne hails from the vineyards of the French regions. If you buy a bottle and it says champagne on the bottle it’s most likely that it was made from France’s vineyards. If you didn’t get the champagne that is so legendary to the regions of France, you pretty much just wasted your money on sparkling wine. You should also make sure when you buy a bottle of champagne that it is spelled with a capital C. French manufacturers are very protective of this name and are the only ones that are allowed to use the name Champagne on bottles. Champagne is made from three different types of grapes - Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. Noir and Meunier are a type of black grape, while the well known Chardonnay is a type of white grape. The label on the bottle on which it is placed is where you will see

BSA: Azerbaijan Tops in Piracy, Cotton, Rice, Grapes
The Business Software Alliance — the Ladies Against Women of the IT set — found out that the average Azerbaijani has over $250 worth of pirated software on his or her computer. Second in the list is Iceland with about $225 and America and China eat it big time because we steal $7.2 billion and $5.4 billion from Bill Gates’ mewling mouth every time we hit the Pirate Bay. Cry us a river, BSA.With the rise of open source software and inexpensive laptops and PCs, the standard software modus operandi is outdated. There is good software out there, but it is increasingly being pushed out by free and open source alternatives. And the people who need to buy software will buy software, even at amazingly high prices. It’s another example of a shill group blaming the consumer for it’s clients own failure to adapt. Sound familiar? Those who can pay, pay. Those who can’t — usually high school and college kids — don’t. When you hit the corporate league, you buy the licenses and every

Sweet Digs, Sour Grapes and Compost.
It’s all over the blogs, but if you missed the news, Redfins real estate porn property review blog Sweet Digs finally gets the hammer blow for “advertising other brokerages listings”. It was always going to happen. Greg, Kevin  and Inman have covered it well enough, so I’ll skip the rehash.   Anyway… here’s my thought on a new potential danger area for agents reviewing homes on their blogs… Unlike print advertising which turns into landfill within a couple of weeks of printing, your search engine optimized blog post is FOREVER. Simple dating of the blog post may not be regarded as enough of disclaimer for errors that will occur over time. Your blog is not to be confused with an archive at Town Hall, or the records room at a newspaper where by definition everyone understands “I’m looking at very old stuff”. Blog posts stay indexed in the search engines forever. So what happens when a house sells and your p

      The Grapes Are Growing.
I love to garden, but living on the second floor with limited space doesn’t make that easy. Therefore, I can only do so much with what I have. The windowsills are filled with parsley, mint, basil, chives, etc, along with a jade plant and something I only know as angel’s wings, a clipping of which I somehow managed to bring on the plane coming back from my Christmas trip home and which has returned to life rather impressively. Thyme and daisies are starting to bud, but I have to worry that those dang bugs from last year will show themselves again. With that fear in mind, I take great joy in watching the grapes come along at the winery. When I enter the gate, make the curve around the pond, and the vineyards come into view, it’s always with a sense of happiness and awe that I mark their progress. From brittle, empty vines to small green leaves uncurling…I get to watch them grow. Some days I might forget to really look, but when I do, the changes are even more

My son asked for grapes but alas, you know what grapes can do to his coughing. So he had the rice version instead. I mixed rice with Plum Furikake, hence the purplish hue.His sides are:Pan Fried Cod in Miso Paste - I used Snakehead (生鱼) here instead.Buttered Baby Corn - I added some fresh button and shitake mushroom in here too.

      Just sour grapes
I have a serious attack of sour grapes this morning. I feel a bit like the poor kid with my face pressed up against the window of the rich man’s house looking at all the sumptuous food on their table. I’m beginning to realise what it’s been like being a Spuds supporter these past 10 years. Watching Liverpool thump PSV in Holland 3-0 in their first leg when we could only manage an own goal over two. Watching ManUre annihilate a good Roma side last night scoring more in one game than we have managed in eleven, and watching Chelski have the luck to score in injury time yet again, just adds injury to an already very injured pride in my team. Last night we saw something that I doubt we will ever see under Arsene. It’s something Jose the Special One has done a few times before and is never afraid to do if things are not going according to plan. That ‘something’ is making a tactical substitution at half time. And it worked! Joe Cole came on

      Graveyard Grapes
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland had a dilemma at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Weeds were overrunning part of the cemetery grounds and it needed some sprucing up. One estimate would have the church spend $50,000 to chop the weeds and clear the debris. Then the diocese decided it was better to spend $25,000 to plant a vineyard. Grape vines in the graveyard might sound a little odd, but cemetery officials see the vineyard as not only a cost savings measure, but also a link to the Cana water-to-wine miracle and today's modern the Mass. They are quick to point out Franciscan friars introduced grapes to California in the 1700s. The nearest graves are about 60 feet from the vines. The Diocese of Oakland has hired a vineyard consultant to monitor the zinfandel, chardonnay and pinot noir grapes. The church plans to see how the vines develop and then decide if the wine can be used in church ceremonies or sold at fundraisers. Talks are underway about possible plantings at two other cemeteries

I have tried some new techniques with this scratchboard. I removed almost all the black and did quite a bit of painting on the panel. I think I have painted more on this panel and scratched less of the black away than I've ever done in the past. The window in the background is a really important element. I'm looking forward to working with red wine next and maybe some camenbert cheese too.

I did the highlights but sanding the paper back to white and the texture of the paper worked well I think in giving the grapes a good feel.Well... What do you think?

      The Wonders of Grapes!
When I feel hungry or need a bit of a boost I have found a small bunch of grapes to be an ideal pick me up - particularly the lovely sweet black ones. They are quite high in calories but they are as good as a bar of chocolate in the "sugar rush" stakes and so much better for you. Try it - keep them washed in the fridge in small bunches - ready for when you have a snack attack. They are also one of the best detox fruits available!
