Great News for Chess Grades? -- Or -- Putting the Grrrrrr into Grading?
You know how your grade is calculated, right? If you beat a player, then into your average for the next year goes their grade plus fifty; if you draw, just their grade; if you lose, their grade minus fifty: and then all your results are averaged. Of course there's also the forty-point rule - this deals with results between players separated by more than forty points in order to make illogicalities

Thanks to a deal with the Minnesota Vikings the Chiefs traded away pro-bowl defensive end Jared Allen and received the Vikings 1st round, 17th pick overall and they got both of the Vikings 3rd round picks, plus the teams swapped their draft positions in the 6th round. Allen was statistically the best defensive end in the NFL last year with 15 1/2 sacks while playing in only 14 games. Allen was one of the bright spots on a team that was reportedly "rebuilding" last season. Allen made rumblings about being unhappy un Kansas City and had issues with the team's ma

Draft Winners and Losers (A Second Opinion)By Patrick LuoWinners:Kansas City Chiefs: (A+) Glenn Dorsey, Branden Albert, Brandon Flowers, Jamaal Charles, Brad Cottam, DaJuan Morgan, William Franklin, Brandon Carry, Barry Richardson, Kevin Robinson, Brian Johnston, Mike MerrittIn terms of just the draft, they easily had the best one. If you consider the fact that they had to give up Jared Allen for a lot of the picks, not so much. But they still had the best draft. Getting the 2nd best defensive prospect (in my opinion), Glenn Dorsey, with the 5th pick is huge. They still addressed their offensive line issues with Branden Albert, easily the top guard in this draft class. They also drafted Barry Richardson from Clemson, great value for a 6th round pick. Cottam was a good pick in the 3rd, mayb

      NFL Draft 2008 Grades
I linked y'all to Mel Kiper's Draft Grades. I do not believe in grading a draft anything before two full season after its conclusion. You cannot project exactly how a player is going to fit and perform in your system. So evaluations of this kinda are pointless. Yet millions of NFL obsessed fans will pour over these draft grades for the next couple of weeks. With such a high demand the sports outlets feel obligated to put out something. In my opinion, evaluating the draft picks 24 hours after the draft is more difficult than projecting next years first round 364 days before it occurs. But in the name of content I feel that there are several ways in which a draft can be evaluated in the immediate aftermath.-Filling needs. In this case we will not penalize any team for "reaching" to fill a ne

Here's how they stacked up.Lunardi was the only one of the three to guess the field perfectly, going 65/65. The other two each missed one. Parrish had Illinois St. in, and Oregon out; Mandel had Virginia Tech in, and Villanova out.For me, the longer you looked at Illinois St.'s resume, the more obvious it became that they were not deserving. Their RPI is 33, which is quite good for a bubble team. They went 13-5 in MVC, a conference that has made a name for itself over the last few years, and reached the conference tournament final. In 2007, the bullpen was supposed to be strength as the Orioles spent $42 million on securing veteran talent in the critical group of pitchers.Sadly, the more things have changed, the more they have stayed the same except with different faces.Baltimore looked for veteran help, instead it had to go back to the minors for relief late in the season.A broken record isn't? Excessive focus on college grades
This wish from UK's Richard Labunski in The Courier-Journal:College freshmen will soon be heading to campuses all over the country. It is a time of excitement and anticipation for them and their parents. Unfortunately, many students will focus so much on grades that it will interfere with how much they learn. As a professor for 25 years at four major universities, I know this from experience: Too many students forget that grades are supposed to reflect what they learn and are not the goal of a college education. Here are some things to keep in mind:Grades have no impact on what is learned in the class. Whether a professor puts an "A" or a "B" on the grade form at the end of the semester has no effect on how much a student got out of the course.Almost everybody gets high grades. Because of grade inflation and other factors, students rarely get "C's." You can't tell how much was learned based on the grade.Focusing on grades means students will study only what will be on exams. This is e

There is no question about the man is in Seattle with the departure of Ray Allen to Boston. Grade: A3. Atlanta -Al Horford. I still have the opinion that the Hawks should have taken Mike Conley here. Horford will be a nice player and they did get Acie Law later, but he won’t be the leader that Conley will. Grade: B-minus4. Memphis - Mike Conley Jr. The Grizzlies quickly snatched up Conley after Atlanta passed. Memphis obviously has plenty of needs, but there is talent with Pau Gasol and Rudy Gay on board. Conley has some developing to do, but he should be a great point in the league for a long time. Grade: A5. Boston - Jeff Green. School grades drop
School grades in Florida took a dip this year, with slightly fewer A and B schools and more than double the number of D and F schools, according to data released this morning by the Department of Education. Educators saw it coming, given changes in the school grading formula. But that's not likely to make the news go down any easier. The number of D schools rose from 122 to 220, while the number of F schools nearly quadrupled, to a record-high 82. Meanwhile, the number of A's actually increased slightly, to 1,472, while the number of B's dropped from 608 to 469. The drop-off, though projected for more than a year, is likely to be viewed by teachers and parents as another strike against the school accountability system built by former Gov. Jeb Bush. The system, based on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test and already unpopular, took a huge hit last month when the Department of Education disclosed 200,000 third-grade reading scores in 2006 may have been inflated due to human e

Student stages robbery to eliminate bad grades
BERLIN (Reuters) - A 16-year-old Berlin student was so worried he would have to repeat a year at school because of poor marks he convinced two friends to storm his class and steal the report cards with his bad grades."The student probably honestly believed that he could avoid repeating the school year if he made the report cards disappear," said a spokesman for local police Monday. The youth sat quietly at the back of the classroom as the two masked robbers, aged 14 and 15, burst in and threatened his teacher with a steel bar if she did not hand over the reports. After grabbing them, the two tried to flee but dropped the reports as other students leapt to defend the teacher. The two were arrested close to the school, and told police their friend had devised the raid because he was afraid of flunking a year. This from Retuers.

      About those school grades
To get school grades out on time, the FCAT advisory panel has agreed upon a handful of recommendations to hold schools harmless for the 2006 third-grade reading scoring errors. First, the state will not count third graders when calculating whether a school made learning gains - unless the inclusion of those students would benefit the school. Fewer than 100 schools would be helped by counting the third graders, said Juan Copa, Director of AYP, School Grades, Research, and Reporting. In the few instances where eliminating the third graders would push the numbers of children beneath the statistically valid cell size of 30, they will still count as being tested. Second, the state will not penalize schools if they do not have at least half of the students in the lowest quartile of students making gains. In the past, a school would drop a letter grade if they didn't meet that mark. No longer. And not just elementary schools. All schools. Commissioner Jeanine Blomberg explained that althoug

Bad Grades Linked To Sleeping Disorders
A new study by Alyssa Bachmann, of Chappaqua Public Schools in New York finds a direct link between sleep disorder and bad grades. This holds true particularly in subjects like English and Maths (now they tell me). “This study, which identified the relationship between the prevalence of symptoms of sleep disorders and academic performance in second and third graders, found that screening students at school with a validated school-based instrument may identify students to be referred for appropriate medical and/or behavioral treatment,” said Bachmann. Grades!
I had to wait forever to get my grades because the school doesn't post them online. Instead, they go through the hassle of sending a letter with your grades. Basically, all it really means is that it takes longer to get your grades. But, after all that waiting, I finally learned today that I kicked law school's butt this semester! Take that! Finally... This past semester was my best by a wide margin. According to the averages the school posts, my grades put me somewhere around the top 15%. I'm very satisfied with that.Happily, my grades have been increasing just about every semester, with an especially large jump between my first and second year. Hopefully this tradition continues and I am perfect all 3L year. Yea, right.Honestly, though, I can't quite figure out the reason for my increase in grades. I haven't been doing anything drastically differently than I did last year. In fact, I might care a bit less about my grades this year than I did last year. So maybe that

      Grades of Hydrogen Peroxide
Some grades of hydrogen peroxide are available in market। The most common classification is technical and food grades. Grades are made based on the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Its concentration is usually expressed in weight percentage. For example 50wt% hydrogen peroxide contains 50% of hydrogen peroxide and 50% of purified water (or de-mineralized water). Browns FA Grades, Part 2--New Arrivals
Eric Steinbach--G--One of the best lineman available in this free agency and the Browns biggest area of need. Not a superstar, but solid and young. Grade: A.Antwan Peek--LB--Quiet career so far. Just starting to blossom in Texans 3-4 when they switched to 4-3. Great upside. Grade: B+.Robaire Smith--DT/DE--Another casualty of the Texans switch to a 4-3. Should provide an upgrade over Alvin McKinley on the line. Grade: B+.Seth McKinney--C/G--After missing a year due to injury, not sure what level he be playing at, but may challenge for a starting spot, or at the least will serve as a versatile backup capable of playing any of the interior line positions. Grade: B.Shaun Smith--DT/NT--A career backup for the Bengals, Smith has good size & youth. Browns hoping that after a year learning from Ted Washington, he will be ready to start. Browns taking a gamble, but there is good upside and very little risk. Grade: B.Jamal Lewis--RB--I've had a hard time with this one. I've disliked Lewis for

Progs Says To Hell With the Cardinals Series and Instead Grades the Season So Far
At this point my friends, if the way this team has played so far is any indication of how the rest of the season will unfold, we can say with confidence that the alleged "spending spree" Hendry embarked upon for the Trib's last hurrah will amount to little more than the above photograph. Folks, this is not a very good baseball team. Compared to last season of course, the 2007 version of Losers Inc. is markedly better, quite possibly to the tune of 75-80 wins. But when your stated goal is to win and win often, and when your roster is built for short-term dividends at the cost of long-term gain, making a couple of strides forward over the previous year's disaster simply doesn't cut the mustard. For Hendry's plan to work, this team has to take a giant leap. And assuming what we currently see is what we will continue to get (with some room for the inevitible reversion to the mean for both hitting and pitching), then this grand illusion, that of this team trying to buy their way out o

ABC Grades the Democrat’s First 100 days as a Failure
You can read about it here. The Democrats made much adeau about their first 100 hours in congress when they were going to pass an aggressive domestic agenda. Which they did. The problem is none of this legislation has gone anywhere. None of it has even made it to the presidents desk. So now the first 100 days are up and it’s time for a grade, only one network even managed to mention it. ABC gave the Democrats an F. You have to give them credit for that, no other network decided to cover it. What good does it do to pass legislation that looks good and caring if it just sits in limbo? The only good is that the Democrats think it makes them look good, like they care about us. If they truly cared wouldn’t they at least get this agenda pushed to the president’s desk for a vote? It’s time to call out the new do nothing congress.

Progs Grades Cubs vs. Reds Series...
Little to say other than the above, and yet, here I go anyway. Today was decided in the 6th. 1st and 3rd, nobody out. Even with the middle of our order up (Jones, Lee, Barrett), the Cubs failed to push one measly run ninety feet to home plate to tie the game. And anyone with any kind of feel for the history of this team knew the game was over right there.  Kyle Lohse, he of the career 54-62 mark with a lifetime ERA of 4.85 and 1.44 WHIP, once again baffled Cub hitters, continuing a mystifying trend that goes back a long way, that being of this team's skill at turning even the most laughable of mediocrities into something approaching Pedro circa 2000. Simply said, it troubles the soul. And despite a solid offensive showing yesterday (7 runs, helped considerably by Jeff Conine's error), and 5 runs on Friday, it seems at least in the early going that this team is doing much of what it has done the previous two seasons: finding ways to lose close games. However--and yes I am go

      Progs Grades the Milwaukee Series....
Very niiice kids. Anytime you can go into a division rival's house and take two of three, you have to consider it a success, even if, at second look, there is still much to be concerned about. I'll start with today first. Despite some flashes of league average ability from Man Law during Spring Training, the fact is he is the worst choice we have for the 5th starter spot. And while the preferred is still somewhere lost in the wilderness of Extended Spring Training, one can't help but think after watching Milwaukee tear Wade Miller limb from limb that Angel Guzman would, like he proved in Spring Training, ultimately be the better choice every fifth day. Man Law it seems, would be better served as the proverbial lightning in the bottle risk taken by another team.  But then it's tough to trade the guy if he's giving up 6 runs every start. And yes, you can chirp at me and say "but it's only one start Progs!" but let's be honest here: most of us were shocked beyond shocked

      Progs Grades the First Series...
Blech. Not all blech of course, but certainly not the good start we were all looking for. As far as today's game goes, well...the 7th inning said it all. The Cubs, up 2-1 still, started off in promising fashion with Soriano skipping one past a lunging Edwin Encarnacion into LF for a single. For myself, I felt that the 7th would be where we would finally break through and put up three or four runs but alas, it was not meant to be as Fonzi, apparently flush with pride at the extension of his two game hitting streak, rendered it all meaningless by getting himself picked off of first base. Inconceivable. Shades of Pierre and 2006 with that one. Then, more shades if not a goddamned time warp as Theriot was tagged out at third while inexplicably running on a grounder TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE INFIELD. Add 'em up and those two miscues completely ruined what should have netted at least one run and some desperately needed breathing room.  The bottom of the seventh then featured the fi

Browns FA Grades, Part 1--Who's gone
Since most of the big free agency action is likely over, I thought I'd give my own grades on how the Browns have done. First up, who Cleveland didn't resign.**Free agents lost: S Brian Russell (Seattle), WR Dennis Northcutt (Jacksonville), DE Alvin McKinley (Denver). While Jones and Pool bring more athleticism to the safety positions than Russell, the Browns will miss his leadership in the secondary. Plus, he is responsible for one of the best hits of the reborn Browns, when he nearly knocked Chad Johnson's head off. Dennis Northcutt is still one of the most dangerous punt returners in the league, but as a WR he drops too many passes, and overall is not worth nearly what the Jaguars are paying him. McKinley is better suited as a situational backup than a full-time starter. He likely won't be missed. GRADE: B. Would be an A if they had kept Russell.**Status unresolved: CB Ralph Brown, G Cosey Coleman, DE Nick Eason, T Nat Dorsey, DT Ethan Kelley, LB Mason Unck. Brown and Do

      Free Agency Grades
So how have the Browns done in free agency relative to everyone else? The Huddle Report grades each team and rates Cleveland's efforts at an A-. This report was prepared before Smith & Smith were signed however, so it's probably more like a solid A now. Also, if you are keeping score at home, the Browns are tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for most players signed during free agency, with 7. In the AFC North, the Steelers and Bengals have each signed 1 player, while the Ravens have zero (although they did make a big trade for Bills' RB Willie McGahee).

Misadventures in eduction: Parents beat up principal over grades
Wow, I know from talking to my wife that irate parents can get in your face over a student's grades, but I've seldom heard of those parents attempting to rearrange a teacher's face because of it...An irate Italian family beat up a principal because they were unhappy with the grades a young relative had received and a ban on cell phones at school.Three male relatives, including the father and grandfather of the student, punched and pushed principal Ugo Castorina at the Lombardi middle school in Bari on Saturday, police said. They were angered by grades on the latest report card and by a recent ban by Castorina on cell phones at the school he has run for the past 22 years.Source: Reuters

Gallaudet Accused of Changing Grades, Lowering Academic Standards, May Lose Accreditation
Gallaudet University, touted as the nation’s only liberal arts school designed to accommodate the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students is in hot water once again. After a protracted, divisive protest over the incoming president that shut down the school for several days, issues brought up during that time have subjected the school to increased scrutiny. As reported by CNN.com, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education has decided to delay its decision on whether to renew Gallaudet’s accreditation. Lack of accreditation will signal that the school has not met basic standards of education, nor will students be eligible for federal financial aid. Faculty sources have said that professors felt coerced into changing grades of several failing students after they received a letter from the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences and Technologies asking them to do so. The faculty sources have declined to be identified because of fear of reprisals from the a

Oh how original. The NDP grades Harper's Cabinet.
So what do you do when your party is falling in the polls for no apparent fault of your own, but you're being squeezed in by two parties that have been increasing in popularity lately? Apparently instead of lashing out at the "right-wing" Conservatives as the Liberals love to do, the NDP is trying a more softer, albeit more corny approach: giving them grades. Of course none of them deserve anything higher than a C-, in their opinion. (I didn't know F-'s even existed.)Welcome to Harper High. Unlike most high schools in Canada, students here are more interested in making the scene than making the grade - and their teacher doesn't seem to care.As a result, Harper High has among the worst grades of any government in Canada. On things that matter to working families - education, taxes, a clean environment, and the war in Afghanistan - these students just don't get it.Canadians have already decided these kids peaked too soon. Fresno State Offensive Recruiting Grades
Fresno State Recruit Ryan MathewsRivals gave Fresno State's recruiting class an A. The Fresno Bee thought the Bulldogs recruiting class warranted a B+. However, the Fresno State Football Blog is the only source that takes into account what you as readers think of our recruiting class. Although Rivals is a reputable source for recruiting information, they do not consider what we as a city think of the recruits that we have brought into the program for the next four years. I realize that our opinions do not mean much when it comes to how these players perform on the field for Fresno State but we as true fans know what this team needed coming into 2007. We as true Fresno State fans know exactly what can help this team reach that level that we had become used to between the years of 2001-2005. Instead of grading the recruiting as a whole I am going to look at each position and give a grade with respect to what I know Fresno State needed to improve their team for the future.Quarterback: T

      Fresno State Defensive Recruiting Grades
Fresno State Recruit Ken Borg If anything became apparent during the 2006 season at Fresno State it was the Bulldogs did not possess the speed on defense to compete in games against teams such as Hawaii, Boise State, or LSU. More often than not the Bulldogs defensive secondary could be seen chasing a RB, WR, or TE down the field due to the lack of speed on defense. Although Marcus McCauley came into the season as one of the more highly touted CB's at Fresno State he would deal with so much pressure that it eventually took its toll on the young man. McCauley was counted on to do far too much during the 2006 season and in the end could not compensate for all of the inexperience in the secondary. While Josh Shirley could hit he always seemed to arrive one second too late. We all know the story of Vincent Mays and how he did not pan out. Elgin Simmons never seemed to grasp the corner position like the Dogs had hoped. The only bright spot in the secondary came with Damon Jenkins, but even
