Once upon a time there lived three Billy goat brothers. They were considered forward-thinking marketers and each had developed extensive opt-in email lists.
One sunny day the smallest of the three Billy goats set out to market his wares and started crossing a small wooden bridge. When the small goat was half was across, an ugly [...]

We keep hearing stories of how, shall we say, 'interesting' it is owning a goat. The bravest, and stupidest act I've ever seen involved goats. A near disaster, indeed.
During the summers while I was in high school I worked on a construction crew. We were building a goat barn for a young couple who had a small herd of milk goats. Things were not progressing well, to say the least. The building site was difficult for vehicles to access, being across a small creek and soggy pasture. The ground at the site itself, however, was anything but soft, and we had to pick-ax our way into the earth for the foundation.
The goats were a constant problem, they were quite curious, and good at getting in the way. Ever have a goat climb on top of the pile of dirt in your wheelbarrow? It's not g
Wisconsin’s Justin Vernon, who records under the name Bon Iver, is on the verge of blowing up. He was named as one of 4 to Watch in the March issue of Paste and his album received a brief mention in last week’s Entertainment Weekly. Stereogum also caught up with him at SXSW. What’s next, SNL?I was fortunate enough to first hear his album For Emma, Forever Ago shortly after he first self-released it last fall; it was re-released by indie label Jagjaguwar on February 19th. The album was recorded over three winter months spent in solitude in the woods of northern Wisconsin, and it is full of heartbreak and longing that is palpable in Vernon’s haunting falsetto. What I find most remarkable about this album is that it was not only recorded without the intent of being released, but

Here are my goat friends that mom saw in the mountains of Andalucia in Spain, in the Malaga province. You can't tell from the picture, but they live on a VERY steep mountain. They stopped here to rest because they were really tired from having to climb so far. Mom had to zoom in a lot since they were so far away, so I am sorry this picture is not so good. I will post some pictures of some local Texas goats soon, which will be much better!I think I like goats, but I heard they might smell bad. I know they don't take as many baths as I do.....I take at least a few cat baths every day!
What a wonderful world...Wis. man upset over beer shoots goats WAUPACA, Wis. - A man who was upset with his wife for not buying beer took vengeance by shooting the family's two pet goats, prosecutors say. Peter W. Mischler, 48, was charged this week in Circuit Court with mistreatment of animals, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and disorderly conduct with a dangerous weapon. The complaint said Mischler came home Monday from hunting and became angry with his 22-year-old daughter for letting the goats out and making a mess. While she was talking on the phone to her mother, authorities said, he told her to tell his wife to bring home some beer, but his wife refused because she was already on her way home.He then threatened to shoot the goats, according to the complaint. After his wife arrived home, she and the daughter heard four gunshots."He shot both of them. He killed Flash, and the officer had to kill Chloe," the daughter, Megan Mischler, said in a phone interview Wednesday.
I mentioned before that it has been a dry season for live music around here of late so it felt good to hit up the Madhatter in Covington last night for the Bowerbirds and The Mountain Goats. As strange as this may sound to some of you, The Mountain Goats were on a shortlist of bands that I have yet to see that I really wanted to catch live, so getting to this one was pretty important.
First up, the Bowerbirds have a really humble quality about them, both in their stage presence and their music. I expect that the trio from Raleigh, North Carolina will continue to add new fans as a result and I know there were a handful or more that turned up last night just to see them. If you have not checked out their debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse, do so asap.
John Darnielle and the two other Mountain Goats took the stage next and the 100 or so that made their way to the show got what they bargained for I think. John and his band started softly enough with a tune from Get Lonely in Wild Sa
John Darnielle is a compulsive writer forever clutching his stomach as songs pour out uncontrollably into whatever recording device is in front of him. What sets him apart from other prolific artists in the indie rock world (Conor Oberst, Ryan Adams, Stephin Merritt) whose records and side projects can't keep up with the flow of their pens is his almost alarming gift for pairing quantity with quality. After dropping the devastating Tallahassee -- a record that followed in gory detail the imagined demise of a Florida couple's marriage -- in 2002, he turned his focus inward, taking an almost autobiographical stance on the follow-up, We Shall All Be Healed, a framework that is applied tenfold on the riveting The Sunset Tree. This is John Cougar Mellencamp's Scarecrow if it were set in southern California and narrated by Charles Bukowski. At the center is Darnielle's abusive stepfather, who slyly receives the album's dedication. He's a drunk, a misguided disciplinarian, and a lousy r
So, two Sunday’s ago a reporter from the San Diego Reader showed up at church to review it for a column he writes called Sheep & Goats. The article comes out tomorrow, so we’ll see what ends up coming out. I figure it can’t be that bad, but we’ll see.
The phrase “sheep and goats” actually comes from the Bible, and it is a pretty interesting title for a column, considering it’s intended meaning Jesus.

Good news I can now run out and buy a pygmy goat. Fuck yeah! Thanks to the crusading efforts of the Goat Justice League pygmy goats have been reclassified by the Seattle City Council as small animals making them legal to own in the city.
“One small step for man, one giant step for goatkind,” council member Richard Conlin, who sponsored the measure, said after Monday’s vote.
The little goats - up to 2 feet tall and weighing 50 to 100 pounds - must have pet licenses, just like cats, dogs and potbelly pigs. However, these pets must be dehorned and males must be neutered to reduce musky odors.
They’re not allowed outside the owner’s yard - but other people can borrow them for grazing.
Don’t goats like chewing on metal? I wonder how many beer cans one of these little bastards could graze up?
Really I could give a shit about the goats. I want to know about this Goat Justice League. Apparently this group of superheros fighting for goat rights is about 100
Wanna help needy families in Ethiopia buy a goat for milk? You can when you buy a bottle of Shea Terra Organic Body Cremess, all-natural body lotions, because .50 cents from the sale of each bottle will go towards the purchase of a goat.
Celebrity mom Angelina Jolie is behind this initiative and supports it all the way, as it helps third world families with much needed income and work.
The body cremes are great too, as all Shea Terra cremes are natural and organic and the ingredients do not contain parabens, sulfates, artificial fragrances or colors.

At a famous Swedish restaurant in Door County, Wisconsin goats are lounging around and grazing on a green roof. The eatery is Al Johnson’s and this is a long standing tradition with the restaurant, not to mention a nice tourist attraction.
The goats according to the owner, are placed up on the roof in the morning via a ramp and then brought down around 5pm or so. The roof has a full grass lawn and it even gets mowed and manicured like a regular lawn.
I would imagine the goats love the room, sun, attention, and outdoor air. The tourists can’t get enough of them, as they take photos and stare at the animals before and after their Swedish meals.
I just hope the sweet goats aren’t part of the “menu”.

OK… so maybe it isn’t an invasion, maybe they were invited. And maybe they’re not all over San Francisco, but confined to a hillside that’s part of the Laguna Honda Hospital Campus in San Francisco’s Forest Hill neighborhood.
But when I drove down Laguna Honda Boulevard today, I nearly broke my neck when I caught a glimpse of the goats grazing on the hillside! The goats didn’t run away from home to party in the City, but were brought in from Sycamore Farms of Monterey County to gobble up some the hazardous grass on the hillside that might, under the right circumstances, end up as fire hazard.
Apparently, this is the third year in row that the goats have visited Laguna Honda, but just the first year that I wasn’t too oblivious to notice that they were there. They’ll be staying through the end of the month, so if you want to catch a glimpse for yourself, here’s how to get there:View Larger Map

We Shall All Be Healed is a 2004 album from John Darnielle's main project, The Mountain Goats. The album focuses on semi-fictional accounts of Darnielle's years as a teenager, particularly his friends' and acquaintances' experiences in California and in Portland, Oregon, as methamphetamine addicts. As The Mountain Goats' official website puts it: "All of the songs on We Shall All Be Healed are based on people John used to know. Most of them are probably dead or in jail by now." Like Tallahassee, but unlike the rest of Darnielle's repertoire up to its release, "We Shall All Be Healed" was recorded with a full band in a recording studio, and produced by John Vanderslice, as opposed to The Mountain Goats' previous practice of recording at home on a boom box with, at most, one or two backup vocalists or a bassist. "Palmcorder Yajna" (the primary single), when played in concert, is often played with the backing of members of one or more of the opening acts on tour with The Mountain G

Taboo VI: The Homecoming is the first release by The Mountain Goats. John Darnielle had this to say of the album: "When I wrote and recorded Taboo VI, I had no idea that anyone outside of a few friends would ever hear it; neither did I hope that anyone outside of those friends would ever express any interest in it. A couple of the things on it (Going to Alaska, Eleven Bands, Solomon Revisited, the Hank Williams song) are things I'd stand by if pressed, though I wish I'd've known how to sing better back when they were recorded. While I completely understand the collector's urge, I would offer the following caveat to anyone trying to hunt down Taboo VI: it's not what you think it is. Its successor, the Hound Chronicles, represented an abrupt and total change in direction, and is the stylistic starting point for all that followed. While I can't and wouldn't disown Taboo VI, I'd like to offer this note of caution to those who like the later stuff and are trying to get their hands o

More than 200 goats needlessly suffocated to death in an overturned livestock trailer near San Francisco because police would not let their herder free them, their owner said on Saturday."They were screaming, screaming, screaming to get out,' said Terri Oyarzun, owner of Goats R Us, an Orinda, California, company that rents goats for grazing brush that poses fire hazards. "They died because the police wouldn't let them out of the trailer."In all 243 goats died on Friday after the four-tier truck trailer transporting them flipped when the truck's driver made a sharp turn on a street in San Rafael, California, a town in Marin County north of San Francisco.Police at the scene were so concerned with controlling traffic and preventing another accident that they disregarded pleas by the goat's herder to free the trapped animals, which could have been corralled away from traffic, Oyarzun said."Those goats didn't have die," she said. "It wasn't necessary. We had herding dogs."About 150 g
