Analysts find GIC's views on recession too gloomy
April 23, 2008 Analysts find GIC's views on recession too gloomy By Bryan Lee THESE are turbulent times, but the world economy has seen worse in the past 30 years, according to economists who feel the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation's (GIC's) gloomy outlook is too bearish. GIC deputy chairman Tony Tan said on Monday that the world could be facing its worst recession in three decades, if policymakers do not act soon to stem a global credit crisis. He called for swift action to stabilise the United States housing market, which is at the heart of the problem. If left just to market forces, the recovery would be 'considerably more painful and long- drawn', he added. Asian Development Bank managing director- general Rajat Nag disagrees with this prognosis. 'It's too pessimistic.

Food Riots Loom Amidst Gloomy Global Economic Forecast
There is a lyric by Rage Against the Machine from a song called New Millennium Homes that rings true in our current political climate. Zach de la Rocha sings, "Hungry people don't stay hungry for long." The people of Haiti, Bangladesh and countries across Africa unknowingly echoed this sentiment in the past few weeks. Violence broke out as starving people went in search of food. World Bank President Robert Zoellick noted on cnn.com that:"In just two months," Zoellick said in his speech, "rice prices have skyrocketed to near historical levels, rising by around 75 percent globally and more in some markets, with more likely to come. In Bangladesh, a 2-kilogram bag of rice ... now consumes about half of the daily income of a poor family."The increase worldwide has

Go Figure: Gloomy Market Numbers Need Scrutiny
by Ben SteinMy old dad, may he rest in peace, taught me many things. One of the best lessons came in 1956 (yes, in 1956, when I was in the sixth grade) when I brought home some data a teacher had given me. It said that according to a crank named Stuart Chase, the world would run out of oil by 1966. "Figures don't lie" was the final phrase of the article.I showed it to my father, who scoffed and said we would be using oil for all of my life and my children's lives. "But Pop," said I, "figures don't lie.""Yes," quoth he, "but liars figure."The Browning VersionThis came back to me like a thunderclap when I read a front-page piece in last Wednesday's Wall Street Journal about how poorly the S&P 500 has done if you count the period from exactly 10 years ago until now. Gloomy Monday
What a way to start the week. It's foggy out and seem like the sun is not going to shine at all today. I really wouldn't mind, if not for the fact that I'm heading out to do my supermarket run and several other errands. It's 38 degrees outside, so the temperature is not really that bad as I don't hear any howling wind.Oh well, the day must go on. I will get through it like any other bad day. There's a kitchen to run and mouth to feed. Sunshine or not, I have to head out. This is it for today...in My World.

I will be two years here and since then,I haven't got any experienced of a wonderful and hot sunshine. There was during summer time but it's different with what I used to.In Philippines you will enjoy the sunshine to the extent that you will hate it because it's too hot and you will end up using an electric fan or an aircon.Hoho, this time here it's so cold(-1 deg celsius). The heaters have to be turned off because I got no money to pay for the bills...they have been on for several hours but it doesn't work really. The cold outside easily penetrates here because we are at the ground floor and the building we're living is not even all that armed. How can I ?ohhhh(singing)...this cold really makes me crazy.Have to join my family under the sheets since I got no job here.Maybe i'll catch you later!GOOD NIGHT...

But then she said they'll be sending an email to clarify, and she'll forward the email to me. Well... I really couldn't care less. :P Insurance nia ma, right? If cash then it's a different matter lo. :DTalking about insurance, I'm still at lost of understanding why people even bother about it. It's a waste of money, no matter how I look at it. Gloomy
The weather is just drab and gloomy.  It’s not easy to keep spirits up when in physical joint pain and having it so crappy out.  Being in pain is one thing, but at least hwen it’s sunny.. it just isn’t nearly as bad for some reason.  Had planned to ride our bike up and down the street in front of the house, even with pain.. but the roads are puddled and we’re still not confident of our biking skills as a whole yet. Father in law called today, we like him.  As far as I know, he doesn’t know about the village.  We love my husband’s parents.  They’re awesome people.  The guilt I feel only makes the anxiety worse when I hear that they might want to come for a visit.  The anxiety flares up at the thought of anyone being in our house, and then I feel guilty because I shouldn’t worry when they visit.  It’s safe when they do, nothing goes wrong.  It’s always nice.  Just… I can’t handle people being in my house.

Those AP exit polls gloomy for Hagel and Gingrich, too
I've mentioned how votes in Massachusetts aren't keen on Kerry or Romney for President, and how Tennesseans could do without a Frist bid for the White House. These stories are obviously a good earner for Associated Press - from whose exit polls they originate - because there are plenty more out there. Two that I haven't yet mentioned: in the Sioux City Journal, an AP story reporting that Nebraska Republican Senator Chuck Hagel has the support of just 37% of Nebraskans for his presidential dream; and from AP in MSNBC, news that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, from Georgia, excites only 30% of Georgians for his 2008 run (thanks to LKLIII for flagging up this story in the Oval Office 2008 Forum). The story in the Sioux City Journal notes that a majority of New Yorkers now favour a Hillary Clinton presidential bid, and nearly two-thirds of Illinois voters think an Obama run would be swell.Sioux City Journal: Poll not high on Hagel for president
