Lawmakers are calling the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, "the first major civil rights act of the 21st century" yet, a US Armed Forces policy denies benefits to servicepeople suffering from genetic disease.
In news that surprises no one but is nonetheless significant, the House has passed the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) by a vote of 414-1. It passed the Senate last week by a 95-0 margin. President Bush is expected to sign GINA into law shortly. Among other provisions related to health insurance coverage, the bill will make it illegal for employers to use genetic information in hiring, firing, or promotion decisions.
For information on GINA, take a look at today's AP wire story as reported by the New York Times. The full text of the bill, as passed by the House, is also available.

Washington: More than 10 years after it was first introduced by New York Rep. Louise Slaughter, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act has passed the US Senate 95-0.The bill outlaws using genetic information gathered by medical research to discriminate against donors by denying them insurance coverage or jobs. President Bush will not oppose the law."It's the first civil rights bill of the new century of life sciences... We made sure today that our laws reflect the advances we are making," Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy told the LA Times. Source: www.allheadlinenews.com
People learning through genetic testing that they might be susceptible to devastating diseases wouldn't also have to worry about losing their jobs or their health insurance under anti-discrimination legislation the Senate passed Thursday.
The bill, described by Sen. Edward Kennedy as ''the first major new civil rights bill of the new century,'' would bar health insurance companies from using genetic information to set premiums or determine enrollment eligibility. Similarly, employers could not use genetic information in hiring, firing or promotion decisions.
''For the first time we act to prevent discrimination before it has taken firm hold and that's why this legislation is unique and groundbreaking,'' said Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Genetic factors that are associated with fears appear to change as children and adolescents age, with some familial factors declining in importance over time while other genetic risk factors arise in adolescence and adulthood, according to a report in the April issue of Archives of General Psychiatry. The nature of common fears changes during childhood and adolescent development, according to background information in the article. Two hypotheses have been proposed regarding genetic risk factors for these fears. "The 'developmentally stable' hypothesis predicts that a single set of genetic risk factors impacts the level of fears at age 8 years and these same genes constitute the only genetic influences on fear-proneness throughout development," the authors write. "By contrast, the 'developm

Here’s a piece that ran on CNN about the genetics research angle of autism. Pretty good, I should say. When we were first ‘finding out’ about autism with regards to Super D, we were living in Southern California and the condition was just ‘mainstreaming’….Time ran a piece on it (front cover) and it mentioned at the time that the largest number of autistic boys being diagnosed were in Southern California. The piece I highlighted above mentions the above average numbers in New Jersey. It can only lead one to speculate that there is something environmental in all of this. I wonder if you see way above average numbers in most urban/suburban areas….and if it can be measured in a way that discounts the percentage due to more people living there.

A new genetic test can reveal the source of some mysterious cancers and lead to quicker treatment, Israeli researchers reported Sunday. Israel-based Rosetta Genomics said its test, still not perfected, uses microRNAs, a type of genetic material that regulates genes and known to be involved in cancer. Corporate researchers used the microRNAs to identify tumors that had spread in the body from unknown sources — a type of cancer known as "cancer of unknown primary" or CUP. Most cancers are named according to where they first develop — such as breast cancer or lung cancer or colon cancer. Even if these cancers spread, or metastasize, to the liver or brain or bones they are still identified by their primary origin. "But there is a group of patients who have tumors
Individual genes do not cause depression, but they are thought to increase the probability of an individual having a depression in the face of other accumulating risk factors, such as other genes and environmental stressors. One gene known to increase the risk for depression in the context of multiple stressful life events is that for the serotonin transporter protein which is targeted by all current drug treatments for depression. In a number of studies it has been shown that people who inherit one form of this gene, called SLC6A4, are at up to four times the risk of depression if they experience unusual stresses in their lives. Basic science experiments and imaging studies in normal people suggest that the gene affects risk for depression by affecting the system that mediates how negati

Further studies are needed to confirm that particular antibodies do indeed cross the placenta and cause damage to the fetal brain.Autism's Origins: Mother's Antibody Production May Affect Fetal Brain B
Prometheus Therapeutics and Diagnostics has modified their celiac genetics testing and reporting. They are now including the number of copies of DQ2 and DQ8. Along with the DQ results they also include a table that summarizes the risk of celiac disease over the general population. Previously Prometheus only reported the presence or absence of DQ2 or DQ8. If you happened to be positive for both DQ2 and DQ8 then we knew your entire DQ pattern. However, if you only had one copy of either or two copies of one the results had less value for determining your risk of celiac disease, its severity and the possible risk of your parents and children for having at least one copy of the at risk genes predisposing to celiac disease. Now Prometheus provides a very detailed report of the DQ2 and DQ8 gene
The next generation of parents is set to embrace genetic testing of kids for diseases that may occur later in life, according to a study published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics. This is big news given that many medical professionals oppose the practice, and there is a movement in Congress to secure genetic privacy. This raises a key question: What is the nature of genetic data? The study's author, Angela Bradbury, M.D., mentioned a generational component to understanding how society interacts with genetic data.
Colorectal cancer, or bowel cancer(-Cancer.html), affects the large bowel and the rectum, which are the lower parts of our digestive system. Bowel cancer is a genetic disease and affects both men and women equally. The exact cause of colorectal cancer is unknown but people who have a family history of the disease come under the high risk category of developing bowel cancer.A family history of bowel cancer means a person has at least one close relative, such as a brother, sister, mother, or father (i.e.: first-degree relative) who is diagnosed with the disease before the age of 45. When two or more of a person’s first-degree relatives are affected by bowel cancer, regardless of age, then he/she is also thought to be at high-risk. Bowel cancer prevention must start by keeping a record of y

Genetic material is the core factor that determine the character of an organism. So to prove that DNA is the genetic material, it should be proved that DNA is responsible for the changes in an organism. In 1928 Griffith did a simple experiment with pneumococci bacteria to prove the above. He selected a smooth strain (virulent) and a rough strain (non-virulent).First He injected smooth strain to mice and all the mice died. Then he injected rough strain to mice and all the mice tolerated it well. Then he heat killed smooth strain and injected it to mice. Mice lived fine. When treated with heat, proteins get denatured and they loose their three dimensional shape and function. This step proves that the factor immediately responsible for virulency of the smooth strain is proteins. Then he mixed heat killed smooth strain and live rough strain and cultured it in a new medium. Then he extracted a sample from the culture and injected it to the mice. mice died. This Step shows that the core factor th

Biotechnology is technology based on biology, especially when used in agriculture, food science, and medicine. The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity has come up with one of many definitions of biotechnology.Biotechnology is often used to refer to genetic engineering technology of the 21st century, however the term encompasses a wider range and history of procedures for modifying biological organisms according to the needs of humanity, going back to the initial modifications of native plants into improved food crops through artificial selection and hybridization. Bioengineering is the science upon which all Biotechnological applications are based. With the development of new approaches and modern techniques, traditional biotechnology industries are also acquiring new horizons enabling them to improve the quality of their products and increase the productivity of their systems. Before 1971, the term, biotechnology, was primarily used in the food processing and agriculture
The compound sulforaphane whose natural precursors are found at high levels in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables has been hailed for its chemopreventive powers against cancer. Now sulforaphane has demonstrated new skills in treating a genetic skin blistering disorder called epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS), Pierre Coulombe and colleagues at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore report at the American Society for Cell Biology 47th Annual Meeting.
EBS is a rare but devastating inherited condition in which fluid-filled lesions called bullae appear at sites of frictional trauma to the skin. Unfortunately, treatment options for EBS are limited and palliative in nature. Much work remains to be done before sulforaphane can be tested clinically with EBS patients, but Coulombe notes that extracts from broccoli sprouts rich in sulforaphane have already been shown to be safe for use in human skin.
In EBS patients, the bottom layer of the epidermis, which is made

There are essentially two sides to the argument. There are the pro-GM (genetic modification) groups including many companies that have invested in the technology, and there are the anti-GM groups including

Brief Description [...]
Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease in which acidic fatty acids
called Gm2 gangliosides accumulate in neuronal cells, resulting in progressive destruction of the central
nervous system. The enzyme hexosaminidase (HEX) normally catalyzes the biogradation of these lipids
and occurs in two principal forms, HEX A and HEX B. HEX A is composed of one alpha (a) and one beta
(B) subunit, while HEX B is composed of two B subunits. TSD occurs when mutations of the HEX A gene
encoding the a subunit result in a deficiency of the HEX A enzyme. Mutations in the gene coding for the B
subunit lead to a deficiency of both the HEX A and HEX B form of the enzyme producing a variant type of
lysosomal storage disease known as Sandhoff disease. Sandhoff disease usually leads to death at about
age three. The enzyme deficiency in Sandhoff disease arises from mutations in a B subunit gene on
chromosome 5, instead of the a subunit gene on chromosome 13 as in TSD.
Whether we like it or not genetic engineering is now a part of our lives. In fact it is a huge part of the agriculture world. Have you ever wondered how genetic engineering is affecting the agriculture industry? Those corporations that are introducing genetically altered crops into the global food chain want you to believe that genetic engineering is a thorough science that is well understood and good for the human race. Actually nothing could be further from the truth. The term genetic engineering would make you think that moving genes from one organism to another is a straightforward procedure, however the reality is that genetic engineering is far from being a perfected science. In reality all of the plants genes are really a big black hole that’s genetic makeup is truly not understood. The genes of a plant are called its genome. What genetic engineering does is force this genome from its original black hole into another black hole which is the other plant in a hope that the new ge

The prevalence of genetic disease in dogs today can only be described as alarmingly common which is bad news for dog owners and dog lovers alike. The following is a list to illustrate the magnitude of the problem:1. On average all dogs carry at least 4-5 defective genes.2. Over 500 genetic diseases have been identified in dogs.3. Hip Dysplasia (HD) (an inherited orthopedic disease that may result in the dog becoming lame) commonly occurs in 60 dog breeds and occurs less frequently in another 110 breeds; thus this disease is seen in over 170 breeds of dog.4. 119 dog breeds are commonly afflicted with progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), a disease that quite often leads to blindness in the affected animal.5. Of all the dog breeds the Poodle suffers from the most number of genetic diseases...145! The reason why the Poodle is predisposed to so many genetic diseases is because not only are there 3 distinct sizes of Poodle in this breed, the large count of disease is a reflection of the popula
The International Serious Adverse Events Consortium (SAEC) officially announced its formation this morning. The new global, non-profit partnership between leading pharmaceutical companies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and academic institutions plans to identify and validate genetic markers that may help predict which individuals are at risk for serious adverse drug events. The goal of the consortium is to publish a set of predictive SNPs for all drug-related serious adverse events (SAEs), reducing significant patient and economic costs as well as improving the flow of safe and effective medical advances by addressing safety issues of new drugs before they reach the market.
Dr. Janet Woodcock, deputy commissioner for operations at the FDA, which has been under pressure to ensure drug safety, especially following Merck’s withdrawal of Vioxx from the market three years ago, said today [1]:
This is what personalized medicine is really about, finding out for the indi
TV commercials exploit fear of breast cancer in the guise of educationMyriad Genetics, a Salt Lake City biotechnology company, has seen its stock price rise in the past few days. My hunch is investors are responding to the company’s unprecedented direct-to-consumer television advertising campaign aimed at women concerned about breast and ovarian cancer. It would be fair to say that this encompasses just about every woman in the world old enough to have heard of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. Those investing in Myriad stock know that is a pretty big market for a company offering a test that can detect genes which dispose women to getting these cancers. In fact, it's too big a market. Myriad is getting awfully close to overselling its testing technology in the guise of trying to educate women about breast cancer. While Wall Street may be happy, the Myriad campaign is exploiting fear of cancer to sell its test.Link to complete story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20761643/~Sandy G.
A genetic variation has been identified that increases the risk of two chronic, autoimmune inflammatory diseases: rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). These research findings result from a long-time collaboration between the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and other organizations. NIAMS is part of the National Institutes of Health. These results appear in the New England Journal of Medicine."Although both diseases are believed to have a strong genetic component, identifying the relevant genes has been extremely difficult," says study coauthor Elaine Remmers, Ph.D., of the Genetics and Genomics Branch of the Intramural Research Program at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Dr. Remmers and her colleagues tested variants within 13 candidate genes located in a region of chromosome 2, which they had previously linked with RA, for associ

Dr. Karl J. Neeser, Ph.D., self-declared immortality-guru, promises a normal life expectancy of over 100 years within a few decades. Thanks to Genetic Analysis.
Fact is: We all age, Neeser knows. “Aging is the decline over years of our body’s organ systems. Our brain starts shrinking, our hearing and sight worsen, our joints stiffen, we lose muscle mass and bone density, and our hearts and lungs become less efficient.”
Neeser though proclaims a new “right anti-aging strategy” - with 150 years being considered a long life. And nothing easier than ruling out Alzheimer’s, cancer, strokes.
The same old dream of immortality differently wrapped. At a clearance price though, if you add up all the years you will live longer. To see more and more ageing people until the world becomes one big huge home for the aged.
Where all, with faces like road maps, have the same dream: To be you

Scientists have identified a genetic flaw which increases the risk of heart disease and heart attacks. Researchers from the US and Canada found that that up to one in four white people carries the section of DNA which increases the risk of heart disease by around 40%. Whilst in Iceland researchers found the same genetic variant was linked to a fifth of heart attacks. Both teams of researchers scanned the genomes of patients who had coronary heart disease or who had suffered a heart attack to see if there were any differences between them and healthy people. The US/Canadian scientists found a section of DNA, called an allele, n a specific chromosome which was associated with heart disease. They studied 23,000 people and found that those with one copy of this allele had a moderately increased risk of heart disease, whilst those with two copies, which accounts for about 20-25 % of white people, have a 30 to 40% higher risk of heart disease than individuals who carry no copies.Professor Ru
Wow, that's a headline grabber. What could that be? They make people with the wrong chromosomes go to the back of the chow line?
No. The incredibly biased headline explains:
For more than 20 years, the armed forces have held a policy that specifically denies disability benefits to servicemen and women with congenital or hereditary conditions. The practice would be illegal in almost any other workplace.
There is one exception, instituted in 1999, that grants benefits to personnel who have served eight years.
God bless the soldiers who suffer this way and maybe the Army (or us?) should take care of them just as a way of honoring them, but the article misses one important point. Should an somebody be answerable for something which isn't their fault? If I hire somebody to fix my roof and he falls because heights make him dizzy, am I responsible? It seems a way of shifting the blame for natural defects (and I don't mean that in a pejorative- just being descriptive) from nobody (you
