      Reliever Gagne Signs With Brewers
By Stephen Rhodes Just a little over a week after the Milwaukee Brewers lost their closer Francisco Cordero to the Cincinnati Reds, the team, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, on Saturday is near a contract agreement with reliever Eric Gagne; this has been verified by an "industry source". Terms of the contract have not been divulged; however, because of Gagne's recent track record, it will probably be one year in length. The Brewers, assuming that they sign Gagne, will have an interesting competition for the closer's role on the team. Milwaukee very recently signed ex-Cleveland Indians reliever David Riske and traded for ex-Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Salomon Torres. In addition, they already have reliever Derrick Turnbow, who had lost the closer's role to Cordero in 2006. Signing Gagne does have some risk involved; expect the Brewers to put Riske, Torres and Turnbow into set-up roles, which leaves Gagne as the closer of record. I will assume that Milwaukee was mindful

Eric Gagne: I'd Hate to Be You Right Now; Reds Get Dusty Baker, The Family Steinbrenner; Other Random Thoughts...
While I was up in Beantown, I saw you rip the heart out of Sox fans hoping for a 2-0 lead in the ALCS, but I saw you stink it up.If it were not for you, the Baltimore Orioles would have two less wins than they should have gotten otherwise. However, since you joined the Red Sox, you have sucked and it's just sad how far you have fallen from your days with the Dodgers.Son, would I not like to be you this week.***It looks like Dusty Baker is coming back!According to various media sources, Dusty has signed a three-year deal to become manager of the Reds.By hiring Dusty Baker as their next manager, the Cincinnati Reds have made a pronounced change in philosophy, turning to an outsider to run the team for the first time in 18 years. The last time they did it, they won a championship. The Reds confirmed on Sunday that Baker will become their next manager. Baker, who has a three-year deal, will be introduced at a news conference Monday in Cincinnati."Dusty is extremely excited to join the Cinci

Boston Gets Kevin Garnett! Boston Gets Eric Gagne!
Only my friends and family know that I am a sports nut as much as I am a music fanatic. Yesterday's news here in Boston made me very happy. In case you didn't hear the Red Sox traded for 2003 Cy Young Award Winner Eric Gagne - the best relief pitcher on the open market just before the trade deadline closed. He's a great pitcher and will help us win another world championship this year. Pitching wins championships and it's hard to believe we didn't give ourselves a strong chance with this move! It could be 2004 all over again. Man, I hope so.Boston's own Tons of Chill:Tons of Chill - Stars The Celtics did the absolutely unthinkable (forgo their future with a youth movement) and I am so glad they did. The team has been mired in stink the last four years but has stunk (really) since 1988. I still go to the games and buy the expensive seats from time to time when I can afford to do so. Between crappy Bruins hockey and worse Celtics basketball.... the sporting world in New England pr

      Red Sox get Eric Gagne
Today the Boston Red Sox made a big trade in acquiring reliever/closer Eric Gagne from the Texas Rangers. In order to get him though, the Red Sox gave up good promising pitcher Kason Gabbard, prospect outfielder David Murphy, and outfielder Engel Beltre. This is a big move to improve the bullpen but they also gave up a lot I think. I think it's a good move but giving up both Gabbard and Murphy was something I didn't want to do. We'll see if Gagne can stay healthy and improve the Red Sox bullpen. What do you think of this trade?

Red Sox Pick Up Gagne In Deadline Deal
The Boston Red Sox traded for Texas Rangers' reliever Eric Gagne in exchange for starter Kason Gabbard and minor league outfielders David Murphy and Engel Beltre. Gagne who just a few seasons back was one of MLB's elite closers, seems to have his health back after undergoing two operations on his elbow as well as back surgery. Gagne will only add depth to the back end of the Boston bullpen which already has two All-Stars in closer Jonathan Paplebon, and setup man Hideki Okajima who were on the American League squad earlier this month. © Copyright thesackattack.com 2007

Who Needs Eric Gagne, Anyway? Phillies At Cubs 7:05 CDT
Not us. Oh sure, he might speak French and strike lots of people out and save lots of games, but where's the fun in that? What about the heart palpitations and adrenaline-induced cold sweat that we all get when OUR closer loads up the bases in the bottom of EVERY SINGLE NINTH? What fun is baseball when you KNOW your closer is going to slam the door on the other team? How much fun is wondering whether Eyre or Wuertz or Ohman is going to blow it if we have someone like Gagne in the pen? Besides, Gagne probably doesn't even have a superhero identity. Give me our sucky, instable bullpen any day of the week. At least I'll be entertained down the stretch, unlike Boston fans, who will have both Paperbon AND Gagne closing for them. Pffft. Try not to die of boredom. . . losers. Speaking of losers, we looked like a bunch of them last night. But then, who wants to make up a measly half game, anyway? A real team makes up a whole game or nothing at all! Besides, I hear that Fonzie really ha

Gagne: Not injured, but will start season on DL
Rangers closer Eric Gagne will start the season on the disabled list. Gagne isn’t injured, but he needs more time to build up arm strength after throwing just three innings in Cactus League action. "He's feeling great," pitching coach Mark Connor said. "He just needs to pitch more innings." The Rangers are hoping Gagne can be activated on April 13. In the meantime, Akinori Otsuka, who saved 32 games for the Rangers last year, will serve as the team’s closer. Source: MLB.com

Gagne: Roughed up against Padres, still Rangers closer
Eric Gagne was roughed up in Tuesday's game against the Padres, surrendering four earned runs in one inning of work. Rangers manager Ron Washington said he's confident Gagne will be ready to be his closer on Opening Day. "Yes, without a doubt," Washington said. "He's healthy. I've seen better stuff than he's shown today, but he's healthy. He's the closer. I'm not going to take the ball away from him." The one thing the Rangers do know is Gagne is unlikely to be ready to pitch back-to-back games once the regular season starts. Source: MLB.com

Gagne: Rangers hope he will be ready for Opening Day
Appearing in his first A game in spring, Eric Gagne allowed a solo homer and struck out one in an inning of work on Tuesday. Despite the long ball, this was another positive step for the Rangers closer, who the team hopes will be ready in time for Opening Day. Even so, considering Gagne's shaky health record over the past two seasons, not to mention multiple surgical procedures, owners gambling on him are almost obliged to select teammate Akinori Otuska, last year's fireman, as a precaution.
