Years ago I had a dentist who was also a scifi/fantasy fan. Every time I went to the dentist I took a bag of books and if I had remembered to remind him, he would bring a bag of books and we would swap. Sheer Ecstasy (I know, get a life) would ensue and I felt like I had scored. Well finding kindred souls is always tough, my dentist moved and my current dentist isn’t a scifi fan. The web allows easier access to kindred souls so I thought perhaps I would start a book swap. After having a survey on my blog that no one responded to, I thought I’d do it myself. So at the top of the column on the right I offer to swap books for stuff. I have lots of computer related stuff that I will happily swap. So far no one has wanted to swap. Then to my delight I found Paperback Swap.
A reader kindly gave notice that Tor Books is launching a new website and promoting it by offering free books to download, one a week, to anyone who signs up. The website is here. Also offered is a sweepstakes and free fantasy artwork for your computer desktop. This week's free novel is Sun of Suns by Karl Schroeder. This week's free desktop art is by Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo. Both artworks, I notice, feature females of unusual physical proportions wearing little or no clothing. Normally, that's not the kind of image that graces my computer desktop, but Julie Bell's art appears to be a painting of Lilith and Taniniver, which I simply can't resist.Speaking of which, I notice Lilith in this painting is blonde. Though I realize Lilith is blonde in, for example, the poems of Dante Gabriel R
I know this may be common sense to some, but for me it was a paradigm shift in my way of living. I grew up with the mentality that if you wanted a book or wanted anything like a movie or CD you just went to the local store and bought it (barnes and noble wasn't around yet). My wife is of the opposite mentality, raised to go to the library for everything. A couple years ago she finished her Masters in Library Science Degree and has worked in libraries ever since. Slowly she has managed to de-brainwash me from the consumer mentality. Now whenever I want something to read, I get it from a library, it's free. But what about all the newest and latest books you say... Well, they have those too. What are you telling me that I don't already know you say... here is something most people don't k

Free BooksOnce upon a time an employee of mine was showing some emotional distress. She told me that her live in boyfriend had left her because she couldn’t deal with her having a child. (Kid was 3 so it wasn’t like he was a surprise) She felt she could deal with the problem but she just didn’t know what to tell her child who wanted to know what happen to the boyfriend. I wrote “Mommy’s
Who wants free books? You look like you do. That girl over in the corner looks like she does. That guy in the back who's chewing gum and talking on his cell phone isn't paying attention, but he probably wants free books, too. I know I want free books. You may notice on our sidebar a link to science fiction texts at Project Gutenberg, which collects public domain and Creative Commons-licensed texts on the Internet. In particular, I notice they have a link to Nick Mamatas's Move Under Ground. I strongly suggest you stop reading this post and start reading that novel, seeing as how it is much better written and has the potential capability of, like, totally blowing your mind.Cory Doctorow makes his books available on the Internet and writes in Forbes that he believes it paradoxically causes th

Have you ever dreamt of possessing thousands of full-text free books? I have. And FullBooks has made this possible. They contain literally thousands of books, mostly classics ones such as Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. Being a great fan of mystery books and Sherlock Holmes, I checked out the collection of books on Sherlock Holmes and clearly, Fullbooks live up to its name. The site contains all the books on Sherlock Holmes and many more.
One downside the site has is that there is no system of searching. The books are arranged in alphabetical order and you must know the name of the book to look for it. Or else you can just browse a book at random to read for your own pleasure.
You do not need any special reader like Microsoft Reader or adobe acrobat reader to read the book. It is displayed on your browser directly. Each book is divided in 7 parts and the format of the book facilitates easy reading. There is no method of bookmarking a section though. You have to
Harper Collins Canada is giving away 50 copies of The Line Painter (to Canadian residents only) to kick start a MySpace reading group. I'm not sure how many are left, so hurry! More information here: http://www.myspace.com/harpercollinscanada.The Line PainterBy Claire CameronIt's 1:08 a.m. when Carrie's car breaks down on the highway somewhere north of Lake Superior. It's dark, the road is quiet, her cell phone is down, and she is alone. She took off from Toronto that morning, running from grief over the death of her boyfriend, and unable to cope with the truth about the events that led to it. The relief Carrie feels as a truck pulls up soon turns to fear after its driver offers her a lift. Frank, her would-be rescuer, is a line painter, putting lines on the road "to stop people from being killed" But after Carrie gets in the truck, she starts to realize that this will be the road trip of her life—a trip of terror, transformation and forgiveness. Claire Cameron has cre
