Hej och kväll på er. =)

Today’s toy review was requested by Jim and is a really neat toy recommended for children aged 4yrs+. Crazy Forts are unlike the forts and playhouses I have featured on Kidazy.com before because they allow children to create their very own forts in their own design! Instead of your kids tearing apart your living room [...]
That times weren't always as peaceful as nowadays can be determined by the large numbers of forts (Gaelic: Duns) on Islay, the silent witnesses of days gone by. Islay had around 80 forts and fortified sites, from which most of them are ruined and hardly visible in the landscape. These forts were built in the Bronze and Iron age from 1000BC to 400AD although it is believed that some forts date back to Neolithic times, but that doesn't seem to be the case on Islay. Islay's forts were scattered all over the island, and most of these forts were hill forts. "A hill fort is a fortified refuge or defended settlement, located to exploit a rise in elevation for military advantage. The fortification usually follows the contours of the hill, consisting of one or more lines of earthworks, with stockades or defensive walls, and external ditches". Other types of forts on Islay are sea promontory forts and sea cliff forts. Some of their names, often derived from Norse and Gaelic, are Rhinns Point,
Military camps and training grounds are often referred to as forts. These forms are areas where many military personnel live, work, and train. Many modern forts are set up like traditional communities. These forts make it possible for a member of the military and their family to live like normal everyday citizens. Throughout the world there are thousands of military forts where military personal are trained and lived. There are a large number of forts located throughout the United States. Below is a list and a quick summary of some of the most well known forts in the United States. A number of these forts are acting military bases and others have been retired and listed as a historical landmark. Many of the popular forts that are no longer working and active military bases are regularly open for tourism and visiting from the general public or schools. The Alamo is located in Texas and used to be known as Mission San Antonia de Valero. The Alamo was where a history battle took place aro

Mayor Bloomberg säger så här i sitt pressmeddelande:"This agreement makes clear that delay was
unacceptable and the need to protect our environment and fight
congestion simply could not wait. We will begin immediately to prepare
for the installation of needed equipment to make our traffic plan a
reality.[...]This agreement is a victory for the broad
coalition of environmental and environmental justice groups, transit
and public health advocates, organized labor and civic leaders who
worked tirelessly for years to make real and important progress for our
In addition to its more famous Barzan Towers Umm Slal Mohammed has two older forts – though given their size fortified houses might be a better name for them. They are located closer to the centre of town then the Barzan Towers, one by the mosque and the other opposite within a larger complex of houses.Neither of them allow visitors to enter; the first is falling apart while the second appears, from the satellite dishes that sprout from it, to appear to be still in use. The area around these forts is fascinating. On one side there is a plantation of dead palm trees, which looks like something out of a war-zone. Climb down into them, and you’ll still see the way the earth has been built up around them to trap any available water. And water was (and is) available – a massive well (be careful if you are with children – it's not fenced off) is present, with murky water at the bottom and an ancient Hudderfield pump still present at the top.Directly behind one of the forts is one
Lots of great new releases in stores today. There are new albums out from Bjork, Maximo Park and The Clientele just to name a few. But one that may have flown under your radar that deserves some attention is Forts from The Boggs. This was certainly a case of a band with some previous releases of which I had no history. Actually, I had not heard of The Boggs previous to spinning this album a few weeks ago for the first time.
The Boggs is a collaborative project led by Jason Friedman. Jason records a new album every few years or so, this being the third, not unlike most musicians. One thing that does set The Boggs apart however, is its rotating cast members. The current band includes Matt Schultz of Enon, Heather D’Angelo of Au Revior Simone and Sam Jayne from Love as Laughter among others. The collaborative work that began three years ago and is the first album from The Boggs since 2003s Stitches.
I am really enjoying this album so far and expect to be digging into it for
Firefox + anonymous proxy - in Firefox, open
Tools - Options - Advanced - Network - Settings. There you have the
proxy options. Go to one of these sites:
http://tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/
http://www.publicproxyservers.com/
http://www.proxz.com/
http://www.stayinvisible.com/
Find some proxies there, enter their details into the proxy options
in Firefox. Don’t worry if the first couple of proxies don’t work; it’s
a trial and error process.
2. Public CGI Proxies
- the easiest method. Randomly chooses a public proxy server; all you
have to do is enter the Pandora.com address and enjoy the melodies.

All these posts about forts is almost coming to an end. After this post there will be one more and then it will be finished for a while. But don't get me wrong, I wasn't getting bored with all these forts. Visiting all these places was an interesting experience and it broadened my horizon about a part of Hollands national history where I knew just a little bit about. In this post some pics from Fort 't Hemeltje (Little Heaven), not a logical name for a fort, but this fort got it's name from a nearby farm that has the same name. Till 1993 the fort was used by the Ministry of Defense as an ammunitiondepot. Nowadays it's still in use as a fireworksdepot. Because not many people come here it's a good place for birds. The long eared owl is brooding here and you also find woodpeckers here and a lot of singingbirds. The first pic comes from Google Earth and gives you a view from above.Because of the high humidity you'll find a lot of fungi on the walls. This is what's left of the kitchen
Things have been busy the past two weeks. The National Forts Month is finished for almost two weeks, but I still didn't post all the selected pics from our last three visits to the different forts. After this post there will be two more posts and then the forts will be done for some time till next year Springtime (I assume). Now some pics that I shot in and around Fort Blauwkapel, Fort Blue Chapel. The fort got it's name from the little church which had originally a blue painted ceiling and blue walls on the inside. The church is almost 500 years old and is the smallest gothic church of the Netherlands. The fort was built around an existing town. We had a 75-minutes guided tour around the fort. Because the guide walked a bit fast we felt a bit rushed while we were taking pictures, so after the tour we walked around parts of the fort by ourselves to take some more pictures. It's a nice fort and because of the town inside the fort it's different from all the other forts. Later we also w
And now my second post for today with pics from the fortified city of Naarden, also part of the Dutch Waterline (Hollandse Waterlinie). It's a well preserved fortified town, one of the best in Europe and mostly intact. We went to the Netherlands Fortress Museum (Het Nederlands Vestingmuseum), located on a huge part of the city walls. You could wander through the tunnels, some exhibitions and around the walls. From the walls you had some nice views. There were also some demonstrations of an old cannon that was shot by some soldiers dressed in historical costumes. We also joined a trip on a small boat around the double moats around the town, which was very nice. We shot quite some pictures as you can see.The first one is again a copied image from Google Earth. From above you can see the typical shape of the town with it's double moats and arrowshaped defensepoints. The second pic is a detail from the so called Spanish House in the town of Naarden. The image on the front of the house ref
I'm still almost two weeks behind with my postings of the fortresses that we have visited the past few weeks. But I will catching up, finally. The Fortresses Month is coming to an end, so tomorrow is the last day that we can visit the fortresses that opened up for the public during this month. After tomorrow it will be all quiet on the fortresses front.I'm planning two posts today. The first one will be with some pics from Fort "De Gagel" and the second post will be with pics from "Vesting Naarden", one of the best preserved fortified towns in Europe. The first pic is a copied image from Google Earth. On this image you can see how the fortress looks from above with the moat and some of the bunkers. Google Earth is great. When I started to use it about 11 months ago there were still a lot of blur parts of Holland, but Holland is pretty much covered now. There is not so much to tell about this fort. For some more information I refer to the URL. Nowadays part of the fort is used by a pige
I'm still catching up with posting pics from the forts we visited the past weeks. Today pics from the last two forts we visited two weeks ago when our brother in law took us on a ride around the area of Leerdam where they live. In my former two posts you saw pics from around Fort Everdingen and Fort "Nieuwe Steeg".The last two forts we visited that day with our brother in law were Fort Asperen and Fort Vuren. We didn't spent so much time on these two forts, so I didn't took so many pictures. At Fort Asperen we took a short walk around the fort, but didn't went inside. We went on top of the fort where you had a nice view over the area and over the village of Asperen. Fort Asperen also has an official website.Nowadays Fort Asperen is used as an artcentre and through the years it has built up a certain reputation with that. Till yesterday the fort had an interesting exhibition made by the famous British filmmaker Peter Greenaway. The exhibition was called Fort Asperen Ark, A Peter Gre
Just pick up were I left a few day ago. Here are some pics shot on the same day as the pictures from fort Everdingen, which you can see in my former post. In this post I'll show some pics that I made at Fort "Nieuwe Steeg", near the village of Asperen and the city of Leerdam. Steeg is de Dutch word for (small) alley. It was the first time ever that this fort was open to the public. We had a half hour guided tour and after that we wandered around parts of the fort ourselves. The interesting thing about this fort was that in case of inundation (flooding) the fort would be completely surrounded by water, just like an island. Here are some of the pics.BTW, Wikipedia also provides some backgroundinformation about the "Hollandse Waterlinie" (Dutch Waterline).Part of a hand driven ammunition elevatorThe key cabinet with all the keys of the different buildings.
Now some pictures from 11 days ago when our brother in law took us by car to some forts of the "Hollandse Waterlinie" near where he and my sister and my parents live. Our first goal was Fort Everdingen. There was a guided tour around the fort of one and a half hour. We couldn't have a look inside the fort, because the fort is still in use by the Ministry of Defense. The Explosives Ordnance Disposal Command of the Royal Netherlands Air Force is using the complex until 2007, so probably after 2007 the fort might be open to the public. The guided tour was done by the author of a book about the "Hollandse Waterlinie", that was published 4 years ago. Coincidentally I gave Noriko that book two weeks earlier for her birthday. It was an interesting tour, especially because the author of the book told a lot of interesting details. The fort is located at the river Lek. The tour went through the river forelands which contains some nice typical Dutch landscapes.Along the dyke towards the fort you
I'm still behind with posting pics from our visits of the forts of the "Hollandse Waterlinie". Blogger wasn't helpful because the server was slow for some unknown reason, which caused very long uploadtimes for the pics I wanted to post. Sometimes more than 4 to 5 minutes per picture. When you are running a photoblog it doesn't require much math to figure out how much time it cost to post 12 pictures, so I decided to wait until the server was a bit quicker.Anyway the pictures from my former post about Fort Hinderdam (only Dutch) were taken on September 2nd in the morning. The pictures I'm about to post now were taken on the same day in the afternoon at Fort Lunetten which contains four defenseworks. Lunetten is also the name of the district or neighbourhood of my hometown Utrecht. We visited Lunet I and III. The English word for this type of defense work is lunette, a half moon shaped fortification. Number II and IV are in use by Dutch Scouting and numbers I and III were open for pu
Here are some more pics of the fortresses that we've been visiting the past few weekends. I'm a little behind with posting, so for some more backgroundinformation about the specific fortress I'll refer to the general website of the "Hollandse Waterlinie", The Dutch Water(defense)line. In this post some pics from our visit of Fort Vechten near Utrecht. We visited here two and a half weeks ago. This is the second largest fort after Fort Rijnauwen. This is the back of a machine gun casemate. This is one of the few that still has it's original cast iron gun turret on it. Most of the cast iron gun turrets were taken by the Germans in World War 2 to be used in their warindustry. This is the front of the casemate, here you can see the iron cast gun turret on top of the casemate. On the right side of the wall you can see part of the surrounding moat but it's all covered by duckweed. You often find bunkers nearby the forts in the surrounding meadows. Tomorrow some more pictures from other fort
