While brake bleeding is a crucial part of auto maintenance, it’s not really something that people like to do. Nearly all tennis players wore all-white, cotton outfits. Today, tennis players wear all sort
Today's performance hungy applications have pushed the computer hardware to newer limits. Performance parts generate a lot of heat that has some serious ill effects on the pc's overall performance. Water or fluid based cooling is still the most cost efficient and aggressive form of cooling that can help take care of the heating problem. Using Masking Fluid for watercolors is more simple than I thought it would be, I think it’s a replacement for negative painting. All you have to do is to have an old brush you don’t use anymore, wet your brush, rub it in soap for maximum impact and ease of use, dip it in the masking fluid then finally of course you begin painting and using it in the places where you want to apply the masking f

The master cylinder is a type of hydraulic pump operated by the driver through the pedal and push rod. The master cylinder push rod is connected to a piston inside the cylinder. There is hydraulic fluid in front of the piston. When the pedal is depressed, the master cylinder piston is pushed forward. The fluid in the master cylinder and the entire system, being incompressible, transmits the force

It’s December, which means two things: if you live down under in Australia, it’s the heat of summer (especially the more north you go). Elsewhere, it’s also the holiday season, holiday parties, and of course plenty of alcohol.
In both cases, dehydration can be a factor. I recall a theory where if you are hung over, drinking a sports drink such as Gatorade would help absorption.
But does it really work?

Last week saw our series on Fluid intake during exercise, where we described the development of our perceptions around drinking during exercise. We looked at how there has been a radical shift in perceptions since the 1970's and how the current scientific evidence is beginning to swing that perception around again. Where it was once recommended that you drink, drink, and drink because thirst was not good enough, there are now studies showing that excessive drinking can be deadly, and that the body is perfectly content to lose up to 3 or 4% of its body weight without any risk or detriment to performance. And when we set up The Science of Sport, our intention was always to stimulate debate, to encourage discerning readers to comment, submit questions and discuss the topics we focused on. And in that line, today we thought we would share the comments of a Dr S. James Shafer, which he kindly sent via one of our readers. So below, highlighted in blue, are the comments of Dr Shafer, word for
Why waiting until you are thirsty is NOT too lateWe really hope everyone is enjoying this series so far. It is proving fun and challenging to write, and we hope that is coming across in the posts. So far we investigated the history of fluid ingestion in Part I, demonstrated why it is the metabolic rate that predicts temperature in Part II, and weighed up the strengths and weaknesses of the lab-based and field studies in Part III. For Part IV we will look at the thirst mechanism and why waiting until you are thirsty is not "too late."Myth busting: If you wait until you are thirsty, it is too lateHow often have you heard this? This is an oft stated mantra of athletes, coaches, and arm-chair quarterbacks everywhere. But where did this concept originate? In 1965 John Greenleaf did a study on four well-trained men to examine how much water they would ingest during exercise in the heat. The title was "Voluntary dehydration in man," and is the first reference to the finding that when given
In terms of adjustability, there are actually two basic types of web layouts. The first type is the fixed layout. Most blogsites have this type of layout. While the second type of layout is the fluid layout. In both types of layouts, there are corresponding advantages and disadvantages. The specific type of layout can be determined or identified by the behavior of the texts and elements of a particular web page. If you horizontally adjust the size of the web browser, the texts and page elements may or may not shift their respective positions. If the texts and elements do not change their respective positions, the layout of that particular page you are viewing is fixed. Conversely, if the texts and elements of the page shift positions to fit the size of the window browser, the particular page that you are viewing has a fluid layout. (Example: Philippine Affairs. This site has a fluid layout.)First, we will change the standard two-column layout of your Blogger blogsite template. It is

Welcome back for Part III in this series on fluid intake and dehydration during exercise! Thus far we have examined a brief history of fluid replacement during endurance exercise in Post I, and in Post II we tried to explain how some of the lab research has perhaps been over-interpreted, and how that has lead to a false belief that ingesting fluid during exercise will keep you cool. In that post we reported the findings of earlier researchers who concluded the following:The core temperature is maintained at a higher level during exerciseIt is the metabolic rate (or in other words, how hard you are exercising) that predicts the core temperature Now, in Part III, we will compare the research that has been done in the field versus that from the lab, and show you the evidence of what really happens when people exercise in a variety of conditions. The field study - Is it really science? Many scientists will downplay the importance of field studies as they are largely uncontrolled studies f
Today sees the second post in our series on fluid intake, dehydration and exercise. Yesterday we looked at the history of fluid intake and how radically our beliefs on the subject had changed. Today we turn our attention to the evidence that has accompanied this shift, beginning with the contention that runners who become dehydrated are likely to develop heat stroke. It is the metabolic rate, not dehydration, that predicts core temperatureIf you examine the scientific literature before the 1960's, you will not find much research on how fluid ingestion affects temperature regulation. The earliest thermoregulation study we know of is from 1938 and was performed by Marius Nielsen in Copenhagen. The title was, "Die Regulation der Korpertemperatur bei Muskelarbiet," which in English translates as "The regulation of the body temperature during muscular work." Nielsen performed an exhaustive series of experiments on several men, in which he demonstrated 1) the core temperature goes up as
Today we begin our five part series on fluid intake during exercise. As discussed, we will look at this complex and somewhat controversial issue over the next two weeks, covering the following topics: The story begins, as most do, at the beginning…a look at the history of fluid intake and drinking during endurance exercise, which serves to illustrate an important point, one which will be covered again and again in this series…For this post, we acknowledge Professor Tim Noakes of UCT, the fluid pioneer whose lifelong pursuit of the truth in this area (and a lone battle for much of it) has thrown up the excellent quotes and anecdotes we use as we delve into the issue. Don’t drink – it’s harmful? Had you been around to run in the 1908 Olympic Games in Rome, you would be reading this with a sense of bewilderment at how things have changed. Today, runners are told to drink, drink, drink. Drink to replace ALL weight loss. Don’t get dehydrated, and so on. But your
First let us say a big "Thank You" to everyone who has asked questions, posted comments, and contributed to the debates here at the Science of Sport. We have had an incredibly positive reaction to our posts on the Chicago Marathon, and many relevant and good questions were asked in the wake of those posts. Therefore we are excited to bring you a new five-part series of posts on fluid replacement during exercise. In this series we will examine the following concepts and ideas:The history of fluid replacement in the marathon and endurance sportsDoes dehydration really cause you to have a higher core temperature?Evaluation of laboratory-based studies vs. field exercise: Is there a difference?Hyponatremia: a disorder of fluid, not sodium, balanceThe physiology of thirst: Why waiting until you are thirsty is NOT too lateWe sincerely hope that this series generates as much interest as our previous two series on running technique and men vs. women in running. This debate is controversial, a

A fluorocarbon-based ferrofluid, with about 400-G saturation magnetization and low field magnetic susceptibility of 3, is placed within a glass Hele-Shaw cell of 1.1-mm gap. Magnetic fields are applied that have in-plane clockwise rotating and dc axial magnetic fields. The ferrofluid is surrounded by a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and deionized water, which prevents ferrofluid wetting of the glass plates. In all cases, the rotational field strength is 20 G rms, and the frequency is 25 Hz. The dc magnetic field will be increased from 0 to 100 to 200 G.
The first experiment uses a 50-µl drop of ferrofluid. The dc axial field is first increased to 100 G, and then the clockwise rotating field is turned on. The ferrofluid drop is circular before the magnetic field is applied. When the dc magnetic field is applied, the ferrofluid drop forms a spiking labyrinth pattern. Then the clockwise rotating field is applie
I’d reviewed the L’oreal UV Perfect Fluid Protector sunscreen before in a separate review. Anyone who knows me would know how paranoid I am about using sunscreen. Sunscreen truly is the best anti-aging cream out there simply because it blocks UV rays from damaging your skin thereby preventing aging at its root.
All that aside though, I had been curious about the anti-dullness formula for a while and I also noticed that the L’oreal UV Perfect sunscreen had been repackaged. So, I was wondering if they had also reformulated it.
So when my current tube was on its last legs, I took a gamble on this anti-dullness formula. It comes in the usual box and tube except there is little purple square at the bottom with the words “anti-dullness”.
The texture of the sunscreen is the same, creamy but there is a purplish tint to the cream. This purple tint, although looking impossibly ghastly, actually serves to counteract yellowness and dullness. The minute I apply it o

It rained today, and I finally had a chance to try out my homemade windshield washer fluid. It works! I know, I know windshield washer fluid is dirt cheap, but a few days ago I decided to do something about a three month old nagging indicator light.I realized that my mind needed a rest. I had endured exactly three months of sitting in the store wondering what I had forgotten and then remembering as I'm pulling out of the parking lot. Adding a few drops of blue food coloring to a gallon of water and calling it a day was starting to sound really good. However, I did a quick search online, and guess what, the recipe is all over the place. Here's the general idea.. mix some rubbing alcohol with a lot of water and add a tiny bit of dishsoap. I'm sorry, but I am really not going to measure this stuff out, it's windshield washer fluid. But, it works, and now I walk out of the store feeling free. By the way, go easy on the soap a little bit goes a long way. Want a few links? Goo

The word doctrine refers to the beliefs that are laid down as true by an instructor or master. These are the fundamental beliefs of a subject. Most doctrines evolve through an interaction of viewpoints. One viewpoint says this is the way it is, and another viewpoint says that isn’t the way it is, and a third viewpoint extrapolates or synthesizes how it is and how it isn’t from the first two viewpoints. Of course, now a fourth viewpoint can come along and contradict the third viewpoint, and then a fifth viewpoint can extrapolate from the third and fourth viewpoints.
Eventually, in a slow but natural Thoughtstorm® process, a doctrine is arrived at that everyone can pretty much agree on. You could call this kind of doctrine a corecept doctrine, because it has been beaten out of the best ideas that any viewpoint could come up with.

A lot of intermediate and professional website designers squabble over their preferred method of laying out websites. Should you go fluid to maximize space, or stay fixed to keep control over appearance? In this post I’ll break down the pros and cons for each option, and let you decide for yourselves.
Fixed width websites
Designing a website with a predetermined width in mind — often around 770-780px wide for people still running 800×600 resolutions, but sometimes up to ~980px — certainly makes designing the page a lot easier. You know exactly how it will appear to visitors regardless of screen resolution, your images will be aligned perfectly, you have complete control over the layout.
Some of the largest websites use fixed width including MSN, MySpace and the New York Times online, showing that fixed width websites are far from being used purely by amateur web designers. Fixed width is generally favoured when control over presentation is important, and thats vital for
I read this story below in one of Chris' articles on his "webzine" which you can check out at chrisrice.com:"...the coolest thing that has ever happened with one of my songs:On November 1, 1998, the fourth morning of the Space Shuttle Discovery Mission STS-95, after the allotted hours of radio silence to allow the astronauts to sleep, NASA’s Mission Control Center chose to fill the Space Shuttle Discovery with my voice, singing “Hallelujahs” as their wake-up call for the astronauts.I, space cadet Rice, yet tethered to planet earth, was singing in outer space!NASA’s official STS-95 Mission Control Center Status Report #07 (7 a.m. CST) for that morning reads: "Chris Rice's 'Hallelujahs' awakened Discovery's seven astronauts at 6:35 a.m. Central time today to begin their fourth day of science activities. The song was requested by pilot Steve Lindsey's wife, Diane."So, Steve Lindsey, the pilot of the Space Shuttle Discovery, was waking up to these words: “Oh cratered moon,
