Rumble: No fish today: Italian fishermen on strike.
Often, in weekends, I stroll along the port of Fiumicino near Rome, a base for the local fishermen. Today, there was something different: there was no activity by the fishing trawlers, they were on strike.Banners on the boat said in English (and strangely enough, also in Arabic): "High Fuel Prices Kill the Fishery", "High Fuel, On Strike" and "Fuel Prices Kill Us. Only Imported Fish Today."More po

      Polarized Sunglasses for avid fishermen
No one noticed it at the time, but when Kelly Jordon caught the 7-pound, 13-ounce bass at noon on the first day of the 2002 CITGO Bassmaster Tour at Lake Guntersville, the fish that ultimately would provide him with the victory, he was wearing bright yellow-tinted sunglasses. It was raining, and as Jordon looked across the pocket he was fishing, he spotted a lone stump just under the surface

Dougie MacDougall - Islay's Fishermen in the Old Days
In the stories of Dougie MacDougall are two characters mentioned being his friends. Their names are Donald MacPhee and John Wilson who were both fishermen at the time. The following story was written down by Dougie MacDougall and gives a nice view of the, sometimes hard lives, these people had years ago.Dougie MacDougall telling: Donald MacPhee and John Wilson were getting ready to set off on the 1st of may, there was great activity on the shore at Rhua Phort Beag. The boat was being loaded with lobster pots, including all the fishing gear and other articles required for their comfort. May I point out that they would have to make a few trips to the west coast before all their lobster pots were over. When the boat was loaded, both of them went over to the Port Askaig shop to get all their provisions required for a week. There were no luxuries for them; the basic items would be, tea, sugar, ham, cheese, bread, corned beef, tinned milk, syrup, treacle, salt, margarine, pipe tobacco and ma

      Fishermen Boat
Fishermen boat on the seashore. Once Latvians were great fishermen, we have many books about fihermen life. No wonder - we live near the Baltic Sea which forms about one third of our border. But now we have destroyed fishing industry. And also many regulations of European Union isn't much help for Latvian fishermen. Let's see what will be left after 10 years...

The Hipwaders - Not just for fishermen anymore.
It’s another T.O.P. CD review and this time it’s The Hipwaders newest release called “Educated Kid.” The band consists of two paramedics, guitarist/lead vocalist Tito Uquillas and bass player/vocalist Chris Blubaugh, and a high school art teacher, drummer/vocalist Nick Baca. The style of the CD is tough to describe. There’s funk, there’s techno and there’s three part harmony. Sounds like a strange mix, but it definitely works! The Hipwaders made adult tunes before entering the wonderful world of children’s music in 2003, so their songs, while obviously written for kids, are witty enough to be enjoyed by adults too. Check out their playlist on YouTube and see them in action. Find out where to buy it here or just order it from Amazon!

      Fishermen and White Islands
Paradise Philippines Photo 3 of 100 Here’s a typical scene when you are going around beaches or water spots in the Philippines - the motorized bangka. The good ol’ Fisherman’s boat, which can also be converted into a transportation vehi that can take tourists to that mysterious ‘white-island’ which seems to be present near every body of water in this country. The so-called white island is a man (or nature) made islet formed from hundreds and thousands of white pebbles or styrofoam which fishermen turn into something profitable - a pay per visit site. Paradise Philippines Taken at Jasaan, Misamis Oriental. And yes, there was a white island there too…not very surprising.

Cell Phone Service To Help Fishermen Catch Fish
Another application for mobile phones was revealed yesterday by SK Telecom.  South Koreans who love to fish will now be able to use their cell phones to help locate the catch of the day.  SK Telecom has introduced the service which uses a float-shaped ultrasonic transmitter connected to a cell phone on one end and a fishing line on the other.  The transmitter sends out ultrasonic pulses to gauge the density of fish in the surrounding water and communicates this back to a receiver plugged into a cell phone.   The service needs a transmitter / receiver device which cost approximately 120,000 won ($129).  The software can be downloaded to the cell phone cost approximately $5.  The device shows the location of the fish and the dept and temperature of the water.

Empty Nets as Tide Turns on Asia's Fishermen
May 14, 2007 — By Jalil Hamid, ReutersKUALA MUDA, Malaysia -- The old adage 'there are plenty more fish in the sea' no longer rings true for Malaysian fisherman Shafie Said. "These days, we have to go farther offshore and into deeper waters to fish," said Shafie, aged 39, his face weather beaten after 16 years sailing tropical waters in the Andaman Sea, off the coast of northwest Malaysia. "Sometimes we return empty handed," Shafie said sadly. It is a story told across Asia by millions of fishermen who ply the region's seas to bring home their main, and often only, source of income. A staple in Asia with its extensive coastlines and poor populations, seafood provides up to 70 percent of the animal protein intake of most Asians. But the tide is turning as fish stocks in Asia have declined by 70 percent in the past 25 years, says Stephen Hall, head of WorldFish, a non-profit research body based in northern Malaysia. "We are taking far too many fishes out of the sea and not leaving

Giant Squid Caught By New Zealand Fishermen
A giant squid was caught by fishermen in New Zealand, measuring nearly 40 feet long (about the size of a school bus), just a few feet short of a Colossal Squid. It is believed to be the first time a squid of this size has ever been captured. Here is the video from MSNBC. In September, a team of Japanese oceanographers filmed a live 42.6 foot (13 m) giant squid for the first time ever. The researchers lured the squid with a long line fitted with squid bait and dangling hooks that were designed to snag the creature when it went for the bait. The device had worked once before with the giant Architeuthisa and researchers had taken many still photographs. This is the first time the enormous squid has been filmed on video in its natural habitat. Once the squid was hooked, it took the creature more than four hours to detach itself, losing a 15-foot portion of one of its tentacle in the process. (The PETA folks are going to love that!)"It was exciting to get a live Architeuthis tentacle. It was

      Lessons From The Fishermen
"The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. To dig for treasures shows not only impatience and greed, but lack of faith. Patience, patience, patience, is what the sea teaches. Patience and faith."Anne Morrow LindberghI've been working on being more patient for the past seven years. This change in attitude started when I chose to leave my last job and start my current business. As a serial entrepreneur, this wasn't my first time around the block as a business owner. Though I began with an idea of what I'd do this time around, time and a desire to follow my passion, morphed that idea into something else. However, getting there was a process. It was, and continues to be, an exercise in patience. We can learn a lot from fishermen. They take a line with bait
